A Bet Delivered...
A big thank you today to Hilary, a.k.a... Hmlee over at The Rivalry, Esq. for delivering on her Outback Bowl bet with me. You'll remember, she put up Chicago style hot dogs from Portillo's and I offered up ribs from Dreamland. The hot dogs arrived just in time for dinner on Friday night.
Hilary made me promise to eat the first hot dog exactly the way a Chicagoan would with relish, mustard, pickle spear, jalapenos, tomato, onion and Portillo's seasoning salt. For a guy who's used to pouring about a pound of chili on top of his dog, I was skeptical.
Let me tell you, it was awesome. How awesome was it? I may never eat another hot dog with chili again. I'm not kidding. Don't doubt me. Just try it when you get a chance. In the words of that cereal commercial it was, "Like a mouth full of joy." We finally polished the last of them off on Saturday night.
Thank you again Hilary for being such a sport and we enjoyed having you during the live blog of the game. On at least three occasions during New Year's Day I had my credit card ready to pull the trigger on shipping ribs to the Windy City. Northwestern gained respect from all Auburn fans in how they played and conducted themselves during game week. It was simply, college football at its finest.

I've never been one...
…..for Jalapenos, but otherwise, the Chicago dog CAN’T be beat! Celery salt is the secret ingredient. I brought a case of the little shakers home from my last visit to the Windy City. I make turkey roll-ups and use celery salt on the tomatoes.
…..The Northwestern Crowd was surprisingly well-behaved, and I don’t think our crowd embarrassed ourselves too badly. It was a fun bowl game. I had no expectations, going in. The win looks nice on the resume, but the real win for Auburn was the extra practice time a winning record gives you. On to recruiting, I suppose!
I'm glad that you
liked them so much! :)
Technically, though, the peppers are called “sport peppers”…. they may, however, be hard to get outside of Chicago. I’m not sure that I’ve ever actually seen them in the grocery store, except sometimes in the jarred form. If you’re trying to recreate the Chicago hot dog and can’t find them, I think jalapenos would do, but I wouldn’t use more than 1/3-1/2 of a nice sized one, sliced lengthwise, for the same amount of heat.
I've had
Chicago style dogs with the sport peppers and they are good, and I’m not the biggest dog fan.

All's well that ends well -
I made my feelings known earlier about the hot dog deal, but I’m glad they were good. If this every happens again though, hold out for the pizza.
I was just about to reply...
If Auburn catches Northwestern or Wisconsin (the other team I write about) in a bowl next year, expect another bet with deep dish pizza from Gino’s East or Italian Beef from Portillo’s on the line…
You're not kidding
My wife and I were lucky enough to try Portillo’s Italian Beef sandwich on our trip to Chicago. That was our second day in Chicago…for the next 3 days that’s all we had to eat

Glad you enjoyed the hot dogs!
And, yes, the Northwestern fans are a classy bunch. Numerous interaction in Tampa before and after the game and, as you state, college football at its best.
DWWD -- WDE!
We attended the game
And I especially liked hearing the Nortwestern band play our War Eagle fight song at half time. To me that showed alot of class. Interaction with Northwestern fans in the parking area before and after the game was also good.
We have visited Chicago several times and we recommend both the Pizza and the dogs. My husband is especially a fan of the dogs.
