Who Says the Best Action Is On The Field?
In a world where Brittany Spears constitutes good music, Nancy Pelosi can be chosen Speaker of the House and Oprah Winfrey can be anointed America's moral compass, it should really come as no surprise that Southern Cal headed to East Tennessee to find its new coach. Still, it comes as something of a mild shock to see USC officials pick former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin as its new coach. Has anyone in the history of college football gotten more for doing less than the boy wonder from Fresno State?
If I wear the orange and white, I feel like I've escaped an assassin's bullet. Rarely in college coaching do programs get a free do over so quickly. Not only did Tennessee get rid of a boy hired to do a man's job, they also pocketed a little buyout money - not bad for a Wednesday night in January.
Go ahead and fess up now Vol fans. Admit it. After Kiffin's introductory press conference 14 months ago, you knew right away that Rocky Top had a made a huge mistake. Doogie Howser was in the house.
Let Kiffin crow to the Los Angeles media about how much better the program is now than when he inherited it. SEC fans know better. Alabama just thought Auburn people were bad about claiming moral victories. Kiffin cited two of them - Alabama and Florida - during his USC introduction. There was however, no mention of the Volunteers 19-15 home loss to new rival, UCLA.
As this college football drama continues, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp becomes a more interesting character by the day. In what has become standard fare, Muschamp quickly told Tennessee officials where it could stick its lucrative offer. Promises being promises, Muschamp is leaving a lot of money on the table this off-season while he sits as "coach in waiting" in Austin.
Making a little more than a $1 million annually, it's fair to say that he's leaving at least $2 million a year on the table while he waits for Mack Brown to quit singing Texas Fight. Either he's crazy like a fox or just simply a Georgia graduate.
Being from Atlanta, you would think the Tennessee job would be more appealing to Muschamp than Texas. While the Longhorns unquestionably have the better program now, Tennessee offers Muschamp an opportunity to return to the SEC and coach close to home. It's hard to understand his rationale for remaining in Texas.
Meanwhile back on the Plains, Gene Chizik, perceived to be the worst hire in college football last year, continues to quietly march along toward a top five recruiting class. Oh yeah, he also won a New Year's Day bowl game and he's yet to publicly insult Nick Saban or Urban Meyer, but he did scare the hell out of the latter in late November.
It's funny how perception vs. reality plays out in life. Who would have thought back in December of 2008 that Gene Chizik and Miss State's Dan Mullen would end up being better hires than the misunderstood and mistreated Kiffin?
A year into his tenure, Chizik is the rock of stability in the SEC. Who would have thought it?

Recruiting is easier in Texas than in Tennessee. The Longhorns are the big fish in a little pond. The Vols are small fish in a big pond. But leaving two mil on the table does make one wonder. Each year those zeroes add up. He’ll have to be HC a long time to catch up such lost financial ground. Like Social Security, take it as soon as you can because those first five years represent a lot of dough that actually equal more than you lose in a normal life span. Plus there’s the fact that you might die and not get your money’s worth. Or in Muschamp’s case, he might not be a great HC and get fired after three years. Then what.
The saddest thing is that about eight coaches have turned down the offer. That is a surprise. I feel sorry for the players, though. What that team needs to do is rally behind the interim coach and soldier on. Get the position coaches you need and slug it out. Heck, the defensive coordinator at Texas Tech did okay, and is now available. Leach and Leavitt are homeless. Guys are floating all over the CFB universe waiting to be saved.
While we may question the money left on the table
the state of Texas is probably the most fertile recruiting ground out there and as I heard stated on WNSP in Mobile yesterday, “Texas only plays 2 big games per season.” Muschamp has it made as an assistant coach and will also have it made as a head coach. The man is knocking down a cool $1 Mil per year and has a written guarantee that he will make more down the road. I only wish I could be so lucky…
Re: The U.T. situation, you make a good point on the “do over”. In my opinion, Mike Leach and Jim Leavitt are damaged goods for the forseeable future so I’d stay the hell away form them. They could get David Cutcliffe in a hurry and he knows the lay of the land at U.T.
I like the phrase...
…“crazy…or just simply a Georgia graduate”. But he knows he is at a great place and I personally know mama’s happy where she’s at.

Cutt has turned Tennessee down!
Sad but true.
WTF is Muschump waiting on? I can understand not wanting to coach at Auburn, especially since he knew the dysfunction we have at the trustee level, but why not Tennessee? Maybe the only SEC job he might want is his alma mater.

i really don't get it. i think muschamp is ready for HC for sure.
would be great to see him out there. i thought today was UT’s selfimposed deadline to get somebody, anybody. are they just not having ANY luck? i thought they had a bunch of recruits scheduled to visit today and wanted to have a HC in place… thought i had gotten that somehwere.
by now, folk are just flying with the rumor… who the hell is there out there?

Part of the reason...
…is that he feels that in the long term he is at a better situation. See Kevin Scarbinsky’s article at http://blog.al.com/kevin-scarbinsky/2010/01/will_muschamp_is_staying_atte.html
The second and probably most important reason is mama’s happy in Texas.

Class Act
You know, I get caught up in this crap as much as anybody else, but it is nice to hear of somebody standing on some principals and not just dollars every now and then….the following quote was attributed to Cutcliff by ESPN after he turned down Tennessee…
“You feel like the job’s not done, and in this era, it bothers me, what we do as coaches, moving here and there. This is mid-January. Nothing about that felt right to me as a person.”
My sentiments exactly....
Cutcliffe has more class in his little finger than Kiffin has in his entire body. Don’t be surprised if UT doesn’t throw a Saban like contract at Muschamp now. You know an ass load of guaranteed money and no buy out on their end.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
wow... thanks for sharing that.
my dad and i were talking about this too… how much has changed in the world of sport since my twin bro and i used to fight over who meant more to their team… Magic or Bird. it used to be funny to me growing up in an age of relative player and coach loyalty and pride… (you got to be proud to wear those shorts and socks), then to see so many jump ship year after year,…
this is not to say there isn’t any player coach loyalty or pride left at all… just… well..
it wasn’t so funny when i had so many baseball and basketball cards that seemed to never match up with their current teams. i couldn’t organize my teams anymore… that was the first time as a kid that i started to realize the loyalty was being lost.
i am not sure what new coaching paradigm or paradox (whatever you want to call it), is going on, or leading into…but the idea that you can have a story like kiffin (claiming he’s actually done anything at TN), and bobby bowden getting pushed out …boggles.

Looks like it
I’m terrified that LT or ECU will hire Malzahn for HC
You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in France?

graham watson is rumoring on espn.com's twitter gimmick.
i don’t think gus will give up the chance to work with a top 5 recruit class…for those 2 options.

Both Louisiana Tech and ECU would need a complete retooling......
to run Malzahn’s offense. Both run a pro style offense……I don’t think gus would leave for either but thats just my gut feeling. If Malzahn has the patience and can help take AU to the next level he will be capable of getting a BCS job at a good school……if he goes to La Tech and doesn’t succeed he will most likely never be a HC at a BCS school. Having said all of that I will feel better when the dominoes have quit falling.
As far as Dooley goes I think UT made an excellent hire and I feel a little stupid for not thinking of him sooner. Dooley will do very well at UT.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
who knows... the carousel turns round and round
just seems that all this dancing came so late this year with meyer and now kiffin… creates stress on everything and everybody around… the recruits have got to be going nuts.
i actually like dooley. he’s a good example of one of those good coaches out there doing good stuff with only a few decent talent pieces here and there.
