Monday Morning Musings
Just when Auburn thought it had escaped one of the craziest, most contengious post-season coaching grabs in recent memory, Gene Chizik now has reason to worry. While there has been no official word of Lousiana Tech officials asking for permission to interview offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, the odds of that happening are extremely high.
In the wake of Derek Dooley's hire at Tennessee, Malzahn's name has been mentioned prominately as a successor at the Rustin, Louisiana school. Outside of Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Malzahn is arguably the hottest assistant coach south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
The question today is whether it's a good move for Malzahn both professionally and finanacially. Considering Dooley just landed one of the most coveted jobs in college football, you'd have to say professionally, it's not a bad move. Financially, you would figure Malzahn would break even. His $350,000 Auburn salary is comparable to what Dooley was pulling down at Tech.
Don't be shocked to hear Malzahn at least listen should Tech call. If nothing else, he could use it for leverage to get a raise at Auburn.
Speaking of Dooley, something tells me he's going to work out at Tennessee. He was a candidate at Auburn last year, but was deemed to be too inexperienced. Many will argue that a 4-8 season this year hardly shows progress. Watching Louisiana Tech play in Jordan-Hare Stadium last September, you had to be impressed with their coaching.
Why did Dooley get the job? One of the primary reasons was the recommendation he received from former Georgia Bulldog Will Muschamp. When Muschamp turned the Vols down, he pointed them in Dooley's direction. Just like in business, it's all about networking.
There's something amazingly cool about seeing Dooley asscend to the top job in Tennessee. After all, it started with his father, Vince leaving Mobile after high school in 1951 to begin his adult life in Auburn. Playing under legendary coach Shug Jordan, the senior Dooley will forever be associated with the Georgia football program. But he will also always be an Auburn graduate and Auburn man and that legacy continues today in Knoxville.
Walking into Beard-Eaves Coliseum on Saturday afternoon, I thought I'd entered the Twilight Zone. The building was sold out, and Auburn was playing like it was relevant again in the SEC. Did the players and fans not get the memo that The Sporting News just this week called Auburn the handsdown worst team in the conference?
Despite appearing a foot shorter at every position and having no inside game, Jeff Lebo's Tigers somehow had a chance to win in the final minute. Sitting next to the sizable, raucous pregame Kentucky crowd, you could hear a pin drop for most of the second half as Auburn outscored the Wildcats 41-33.
Even though Auburn came up short in a 72-67 loss, it got the attention of Kentucky coach John Calipari. "I always respected Jeff Lebo and the job he does, but what he did today to keep his team right there to win the game was incredible."
Lebo still faces an uphill battle in trying to save his job. The days of moral victories are over. But if he continues to get the effort he got Saturday, you have to believe he'll have a fighting chance.

Lebo...
…..has more lives than a cat! This time last year, he was dead in the water with embarrassing losses non-con. What followed was inspired SEC play with an undermanned squad, and a near-miss on the NCAA tourney.
…..After Saturday’s shocker, I wonder if this season will be any different? My god. How do you go from being a brick-throwing cadre of clowns, to shooting 70+ percent against KY in the second half? I’d love to see Lebo do this BEFORE the chips are down, please!
how has he gone this long
and not done anything? I know our facilitys suck but thats going to change but will lebo be there or are we scouting a new coach
AUBURN is back!
So what is new with Malzahn?
Jay,
So what is new with Malzahn that makes you think we should have reason to worry? Because everything I was reading yesterday (al.com and War Eagle Reader) said otherwise. What has developed between now and then that makes CGM going to LA tech more than a possibility?
On a side note I think he should get a raise. I think I read yesterday that he is making less than Roof. That’s an injustice.
I'd like for AU
to be proactive with the raises and not wait until another school comes calling. Jay Jacobs stated after Tubs departure that hiring a new coach wouldn’t be a money problem. Well, let’s spend some now and keep the staff intact. Just my two cents.
DWWD -- WDE!
Don't want to lose Malzahn buuutttt.....
I wouldn’t cry too much if he took off. I like CGM’s off the wall approach and willingness to try risky plays to catch the defense off guard….HOOOWWWEEEVVVAAA…..CGM made some really questionable play calls at the end of several games last year (Kentucky comes immediately to mind) and I absolutely hate the hurry up/Meercat offense when we have a lead or our defense just got off the field against a long drive. He needs to use his head when running the hurry up. We have to give our defense time to catch their breath and burn clock sometimes and the Meercat does us no favors in that regard. I would like to see CGM change things up and run the hurry up off a pass completion, a long run, or when going from 2nd to 3rd down, not EVERY play. I would like to see us get a 1st down at least before they start pushing up tempo so that we don’t go three and out and use up 1:07 on the clock.
If we DO lose Malzhan, I am sure that with the weapons we have on the ground at Auburn we will get a talented OC….. and to be quite honest I think with the talent we have and talent coming to Auburn that it might be better served in a more traditional offense. I know that recruits like the run’n gun of the spread offense and that you can stack up some gaudy stats, but if you have the talent you CAN NOT BEAT A TRADITIONAL offense. For evidence, see our hated rivals to the north and the 2004 Tigers. Cameron Newton, with our stable of running backs and maturing wide receivers has a chance to be better than Jason Campbell was in ’04. Lord knows he has the arm strength.
Whoever our OC in in 2010, he is going to have a good time on game day I suspect.
Oh, and Lebo needs to go. I like him, he’s a good guy but if we want to be anything more than average we’re going to have to take a chance on a new hire. You know what you are getting with Lebo, spurts of exiciting inspired play surrounded by lengthy periods or uninspired mediocrity. I don’t think anybody at Auburn thinks that is worth wasting another season on. But if the administration kept him I wouldn’t blame them. I do think he might be able to build a stable program EVENTUALLY. But the problem is how much longer do we have to wait.
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
Umm...
Whoever has the best athletes in the end is who comes out on top. I take it you forget UF’s two recent national championships?? Sometimes the spread wins, sometimes the pro-style wins. I wouldn’t say it’s always a given thing. Wow man, you’re the king of over stating something I think this week.
Would be a good hire for La Tech and a good stepping stone for Bowden to get a better job.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I know that Lebo has not gotten AU to where we would like it, but.....
I still say we don’t lose anything by giving him one more year to coach his first good recruiting class. Let’s see what he can do with recruits and the new arena.

Todd...
Your defense of Lebo is “getting a little stale.” Haha, just kidding with you man. I too find it hard to oust him this year, though the more games we lose the more difficult it becomes to defend his job performance. If we win 4 or fewer SEC games this year, I think Auburn will be hard pressed to keep him on board no matter what the circumstances are right now.
Like you said,
the days of moral victories are over for Lebo. He has had 6 seasons to get Auburn into a respectable position, and our only postseason run in all 6 seasons ended with a loss to Baylor in the NIT quarterfinals — and that was in arguably the most down season in recent memory for the SEC. And I’m sorry, but he cannot use the excuse of poor facilities. Nell Fortner has been able to recruit just fine to Beard-Eaves. I say new arena, new coach. Our men’s team needs someone who has a drive to win, much like Fortner.
"We're at AUBURN. I think that says it all. We're going after the best in the country -- no matter when, what, where, how. That's how we're going to do it. We're going to work really hard to try to get that done every year -- including this one." -- Auburn University Head Football Coach Gene Chizik
I agree.
I really think that we need to establish a new attitude for Auburn basketball. Lebo represents losing being okay. If we want to put our money where are mouth is, then moral victories in any sports are unacceptable. There are NO moral victories. When you lose, you lose. That taste of bitterness is what pushes you forward. Losing in a great way is not possible when you lose. Why? Because you lost damnit. It’s that simple. I don’t see how Lebo can have any support left. I’m trying to argue for him, I really am. However, what has he done that denotes more than mediocrity during his tenure at Auburn? I think you’d be hard pressed to answer that question.
If we can give Tommy Joe Eagles (RIP) 6 seasons.....
we can give Lebo one more with the only recruiting class that has any resemblence to an improvement to the program. And let’s not forget that Tommy Joe Eagles was successful everywhere but AU and was on probation for his first 3 seasons at AU due to the mess that Sonny Smith left us with (not that it was all Smith’s fault but he shouldered the blame). And also don’t forget that if we change coaches that the recruiting class that Lebo has already signed dissolves on the spot. Lebo’s excuse has been recruiting due to facilities all I am saying is give him one year to see if he’s right. And there is no way you can compare the success of the womens team to the men’s…….the womens teams are not competing for NBA talent and the University has more to do with their choice. The NBA has made it tougher on Universities to recruit……most want to go to University to be seen and evaluated for the NBA draft as soon as possible and an education is the last worry (sad but true). Give Lebo one more year with his good recruiting class.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
There is one main reason I don't like Lebo.
He consistently makes excuses. Get out there and do your job and take responsibility when you fail. He hasn’t done that. That’s why I don’t want him. I want someone who is willing to take the blame and keep working. He whines and says it’s not his fault. We need someone who doesn’t whine and takes responsibility.
Not that I disagree with about not wanting to hear excuses......
but in this case I think his argument is justified. The Beave is an embarrassment for a University like AU……we should have facilities that are second to none in the SEC and for the most part we do with the exception of the Beave. Like I said next year their will be no room for excuses because he has signed a very good class and the facilities are supposed to be part of the reason that he has. Give him one year with his first good class and see what happens that’s all I’m saying.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I see you what you mean.
I’m wondering what will happen with him regardless. I mean I don’t think Jacobs makes decisions based on the fan base or competency for that matter. My guess is Jacobs is going to keep him on for a couple more years.
I hope you're right......
about Jacobs keeping him for one more season (don’t know about two if we don’t see significant improvement next season). But I think I could predict the weather tossing chicken bones better than I could predict what Jacobs will do……..I have little faith that his decision will involve sound logic regardless.
