Senior Bowl
Going a bit out of character for me. Please don’t think that I have gone soft, or whatever. It is the week before National Signing Day and everyone else has that info covered. This piece has nothing to do with
With the Senior Bowl approaching I have to wonder what the hell is Tim Tebow doing there? What good can possibly come out of him playing in this game? I am normally all for "stars" playing in exhibition games. Examples being Peyton Manning playing in pre season games, and the rest of the starters doing the same. Baseball stars playing in the All Star Game unless injured. It should be an honor to play for the fans that shell out big bucks to see you play.
The issue here for me is that the Senior Bowl is nothing but an NFL scouting game. The rules on offense and defense are ridiculous and it is not real football. Now back to my point and Tebow… what good can he gain by playing? We all (as well as the NFL scouts) have seen him play for the last 3.5 to 4 years. He has been on ESPN non stop, and any highlight he could possibly have has been shown a couple of hundred times. Is he going to make a throw in the Senior Bowl that is going to change a NFL scouts mind about whether he can play quarterback or not? Not a chance. Whether he can play QB or not will be determined in camp for XYZ team that either drafts him or picks him up as a Free Agent.
Now if he was going to play tight end or line up in the slot as a wide receiver it would be a great decision to play. Personally, I think that is where he could ultimately end up if he is going to have a productive pro career. Not saying that he cannot play QB, because I think he could. But he will have to win a spot on a roster as a QB, or come in due to injury. I do not see Tebow being a clip board guy. He has too much going for him.
Please Tim, for all of us who have hated on you, and were ready for you to leave college football; don’t get hurt playing in this game it is not worth it. The Senior Bowl is stupid and I would imagine that most College Football Fans do not watch it. It is nothing but a numbers game… height, weight, speed, vertical, etc. They do not have a number for heart or leadership, and everyone knows that you have that. You will get drafted, some team will "take a chance" on you. Why put yourself in danger? It is just not worth it.

He's playing
to improve his draft status…just like everyone else. A lot of teams not sold on him
Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

My point is that there is no way
that he is going to do that. Unless he is going to play another position. To quote Charles Barkley, "Maybe I am wrong, but I doubt it. "
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
Perhaps...
He just wants to prove himself against top-end talent in every position. For most athletes that attend it is all about the practices and how well they perform during practice time that wows the scouts. For Tebow it is going to be all about the game performance. That realtime situational game play that gives the scouts the ability to look at his on-the-field actions rather than his mechanics.

I went to the 2004 Senior Bowl to watch him, Cadillac (one freakin carry thanks to Gruden), Junior Rosegreen, and Carlos Rogers play. During the draft, Mel Kyper stated that it was JC’s performance During Senior Bowl week that propelled him ino the 1st round (despite his great season) You can always improve your draft status. If he can be productive outside the Florida system, it will help him.

I think Jacksonville will pick this kid up, regardless of how he performs in Mobile
They are really struggling with fan support, and this is exactly the kind of draft pick they need to energize the fan base.

i've always...
Disagreed with the notion that Tim Tebow can’t play QB in the NFL. Yes his wind up is long but so is Brett Favre’s and Phillip Rivers’. Hell Rivers throws the ball side arm most of the time. It takes skill, brains, and a strong arm to play QB in the NFL. All of which Tebow possesses. All this prototypical crap is just that, Crap. People have been proving that old saying wrong for years. From Barry Sanders and Drew Brees to Jerrad Powers (all considered too small for their positions). The heart of a winner beats in that man’s chest and if he wants it bad enough he will be it. I’d love to have 22 Tim Tebows on Auburn’s team every year, and i think he’ll do just fine. Only time will tell.
Ugh...Phillip Rivers
Every time I see his name I think of what might have been.

Tebow strikes me...
…..as one of those guys who will suit up any time, any place. Loves the game, has no fear. The boy does not play scared!
I think he needed to play
I really don’t think Pro scouts draft based on college highlights anymore. If they did Graham Harrell would have been a first rounder. They draft with a tape measure and a stopwatch. At the Senior Bowl he can atleast show off his potential. They all know he ran an offense that doesn’t get run in the NFL so his college years mean nothing to them.
Its his perogative.
I don’t think he’ll help or damage himself. And the OP is correct, Tebow will be on a pro football team no matter the outcome of the Senior Bowl.

Here is the dilemma
Each and every year the NFL moves further away from the college game. The NFL gets more sophisticated while the college game does not have the luxury because more and more Juniors leave early so they have to get more simple . College coaches don’t care about the pro game anymore (why would they?) they want to tell high school recruits “we run the same system you already know”.
Right now the difference between the pro game and the college game is larger than it has ever been. College fans, even SEC fans don’t want to admit that. First round busts are at an all time high because they are simply not ready for what it takes and can cost a scout and a coach his job. .
You take the college tapes and wad them up and throw them in the trash.
Here is the deal……If you are an NFL scout you study YOUR 53 man roster, you find the holes in it… You determine that a guy that weighs “x” amount and is “x” tall and runs “x” in the 40 and bench presses “x” will be better than John Doe who is already drawing a paycheck. from your team. You could not care less what he did in college (that’s not your concern) you only care how much he will help your team. It’s about job security for these guys just like it is for you.
If the guy you targeted is a bust atleast you had the tape measure and stopwatch to back you up, it’s the coaches fault that he didn’t pan out.. But the fact is how good they were in college means nothing to the NFL now.
My opinion...
is that he is playing in this game because he wants to play quarterback at the next level and nothing else. He has stated as much this week in post practice interviews. With this being his first NFL interview, it is also his last opportunity to run drills in the position of his choice. Once you get up to the combine or do individual workouts for any given team, you run the drills THEY want you to at the position THEY want you to play.
Maisel’s initial mock drafts had Tebow as a 3rd round QB, OR as a late 1st to early 2nd round pick as a utility player. Therefore, in my opinion, if he wants to get drafted as a QB, he has a LONG way to go to boost his draft status for that position. What better way to do that than to display your abilities in front of 50+ coaches/scouts/GMs that are standing no further than 20 feet away from you.
Bottom line: if he DIDN’T play in this game, he’d likely not throw a single pass during the combine or team workouts, and ultimately miss out on proving himself as a QB at a high level.
As of right now (pre Senior Bowl), I can name 5 quarterbacks that I think are better, NFL caliber QBs, than Tebow. He has nowhere to go but up, IMO.
