RUNNING BACK U
I posted this over at philsteele.com on the Auburn team page blog. I thought you might like it.
Auburn has been known as RUNNING BACK U for some time now. Some still try and compare USC, Ohio State, and a few others with the Tigers from the Loveliest Village, and that debate goes on.
With names like Bo Jackson, Rudi Johnson, Stephen Davis, Ronnie Brown, Carnell Williams, just to name a few, and now Ben Tate, you see why the Tigers claim, has some merit.
As for the claim it’s self, let’s look at the past some other time. Today we focus on the Ausome year Ben Tate had.
Ben Tate led all Auburn rushers with 1,362 yards on 263 attempts. He scored 10 touchdowns, and averaged 5.2 yards per carry, and 104.8 per game. Good enough for third* in the conference.
Before the season ever started, Coach Luper, the Auburn running backs coach, predicted Tate would rush at least 1,000 yards this season. I wonder if the coach has this weeks’ lottery numbers?
The overwhelming edge a good running back has is the offensive line’s ability to run block. The gentlemen in charge of clearing the road for Ben were recruited at Auburn for just that reason. Experienced, talented, and eager to put 2008 behind them, this group of offensive linemen, deserve a lot of credit for Ben’s success this year.
The tight ends, and receivers did an excellent job of down field blocking this season as well.
But the true measure of a great running back is how many yards he gains after initial contact. Big Ben did an excellent job this year of staying on his feet, driving his legs, and leaning forward when he was going to the ground.
By all measures Ben Tate will be playing in the NFL next year. It seems that the league covets Auburn running backs, and they will really be eager to get Mr. Tate in the fold of professional football.
Now for Auburn the task is, who will replace Ben Tate?
Can you replace a Ben Tate?
Since this is RUNNING BACK U, my gut instinct is, that Auburn has a back up, waiting. Knowing full well, that the road to the NFL running back stardom goes through Auburn.

I believe that AU has replaced Ben Tate.
With MIcheal Dyer coming in, it looks like he can step right in and be the next great back from
Auburn. If Lattimore comes too, that would be an AUsome punch in the Gus Bus.
WAR EAGLE!
Not counting out mario fumblehands yet,
But Dyer is a stud, and eric smith has done nothing to establish himself as a back capable of being our go to guy. Maybe this will be his year, but I think it depends on Dyer. But who knows, it could be anybody at this point
Don't count out Eric Smith and Mario Fannin just yet.....
and Dontae Aycock is supposed to be the real deal as well.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I completely forgot about Aycock.
I don’t know about Fannin. He can’t seem to hold on to the ball out of the back field. Eric Smith does a great job blocking and has really good hands catching the ball. He might be the guy, but I still think it will be Dyer.
WAR EAGLE
Thanks y'all for the comments...
The RB position has been a stepping stone for many players from Auburn to the pros. I contend that will not change in this offensive scheme that Malzahn has brought to Auburn.
Truly I believe it can compliment more than just one or two backs. I can see three or four backs with multiple carries, and receptions, enhancing not only the allure of more top athletes choosing Auburn out of high school, but help them in their future goals as pros.

With Dyer...
…..some see the next coming of Bo Jackson. Might turn out to be Alan Evans. For those who don’t recall, Alan Evans was one of those 5-star tops in the nation running backs who signed with Auburn in the mid-1980s. Never played a snap.
…..You never know how they’ll turn out. Fannin’s had some unfortunate ball-security woes in his career. This past season, they were mostly on his short stint as the punt returner. I like our current crop of coaches’ chance of turning that around. Fannin can be a weapon, I think. Aycock and Dyer are unknowns at this point, to me. We won’t see Dyer till the fall. I’ll be watching Aycock with great interest on A-Day!
Dyer will not be an Alan Evans
Dyer is the Real Deal, people! They call him a human pinball! He is 200 pounds of muscle and very difficult to bring down when he has a head of steam coming through the line. I’ve seen the kid play a couple of times and he can flat run over people. I’m not referring to this Under Armour game where the coaches – old as Methuselah – seemed to be bent on passing 9 out of 10 plays. I have seen Dyer flat run over people and some of them were pretty good linebackers. Dyer has breakaway speed, agility, strength and he is very elusive. Chizik and his staff have recruited some pretty good lineman this year and if they will do their job, we all will see Dyer do his. He is so good, we may not get another running back recruit because they are unsure about whether or not they will get enough carries to make a name for themselves with Dyer in the picture. One thing is for sure, Auburn needs one more downhill runner. Now that Pete Carroll has his eyes on the Seattle job, Lache Seastrunk may come back into the picture. Why in the world he would want to go to USC and be one of several 5 star running backs is beyond my comprehension. As for LSU, there offense has been non-existent the last two years. Should Seastrunk decide for the Bengal Tigers of LSU, he would jeopardize his NFL career. It is hard to tell what these 18 year old young men are thinking. As for Marcus Lattimore, he would hurt, and I mean hurt badly, his career should he decide to go to South Carolina or Penn State. Neither of those schools has put many running backs in the NFL. Spurrier has a pass-happy offense that was ranked 91st in rushing in 2009. Penn State ended up a lot better with a rushing offense that ranked 41st; however, neither school came close to Auburn’s rank of 13th in rushing offense for 2009. Alas, Marcus Lattimore is also considering Oregon and the Ducks would up 6th in total offense, which is somewhat better than Auburn. There is always good news, however. Oregon is on the other side of the nation and it would be difficult for family to see him play. This side of the country rarely gets PAC-10 games on a major network so I guess his family could purchase ESPN Game Plan. Similar to USC, the Ducks have a stable of running backs and Lattimore’s playing time would suffer early in his career should he decide to go to Oregon. If he went to Oregon, I would say he had “Quacked Up!” With Dyer already being committed to Auburn, it is very doubtful that both Seastrunk and Lattimore will vow to be a Tiger. We may get one of them. I personally think we have a better shot at Lattimore but then again, you never know what is going on in the heads of those high school seniors. If we don’t get Seastrunk or Lattimore, Dontae Aycock will get the shot that he most likely deserves. Don’t forget! He threw away a chance to play in the triple option at Georgia Tech to come to Auburn. Aycock has now been on the weights for a year and he is now up to 221 pounds. I believe he is a couple of inches shorter than Lattimore but in the long run, he may end up being just as good. No matter what, Chizik and his excellent staff have put together one of the best, if not the best, recruiting classes in the history of Auburn football. Congrats to the coaches and congrats to Michael Dyer for making a wise decision. Nothing left to do now but sit back and hope that others will make an equally wise decision. War Eagle!
I want Seastrunk
I’m telling you guys, Seastrunk is the best in the bunch, I have no doubt in my mind about it. I really hope we haven’t stopped pursuing him. That would really be a bad idea. I think he has speed that no one else has this year. Lattimore is close behind as well. I say we go hard after all three. By the way, as good as this year is treating us recruiting wise, if we have Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper in 2011 we will have an even better year with Pete Carroll and Urban Meyer most likely out of the picture by then. I think we can really take home an even better class than this year’s. If we do that, we’re going to be knocking on the crystal’s door in a couple of years.
Pete Carroll has taken the Seattle job.....
and Meyer isn’t going anywhere. Not sure about which back is better and would take either Seastrunk or Lattimore with open arms. Lattimore is the more powerful runner (compared to Ronnie Brown on several recruiting sites)….Seastrunk is more of the shifty type back and is more likely to run around a defender than over him. Again I think either would be a great addition to our program.
