Arkansas Prediction Thread

War Eagle!

After a near collapse against Kentucky, our Tigers are gearing up for their toughest test to date against the 12th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. This will be Auburn's first CBS game with Verne 'n' Gary as the announcers since the 2008 Iron Bowl (vomit). Ryan Mallett and the Hogs will be an extremely difficult matchup for our subpar (to put it kindly) secondary. I believe the only way we can stop their offense is to bring the house early and often and hope to rattle Mallett. Of coures, this will likely lead to some big plays in the passing game, but we already know Arkansas will put up some points on Saturday. I also hope Tracy Rocker gets after his defensive line after their disappearing act against Kentucky, and that they come out fired up and really disrupt things along the line of scrimmage.

The season is halfway over (booooooo), and we have yet to have any repeat winners. Congratulations go out to commenter AU04Natlchamps for having the foresight to envision a close game in the bluegrass state. His prediction was only six points off the actual final score, so AU04Natlchamps is the newest addition to the weekly winners' list! Nice work!

Game 1 (Arkansas State): Sparkey
Game 2 (Mississippi State): Col.Angus
Game 3 (Clemson): Jumpn_JackFlash (PERFECT)
Game 4 (South Carolina): Todd92
Game 5 (Louisiana-Monroe): SandMountainTiger
Game 6 (Kentucky): AU04Natlchamps

I've had a hard time coming up with a score prediction of my own for this game, as I believe Mallett provides a tremendous challenge for our defense. I said in the preseason that Arkansas would be a game we would drop, but I also didn't envision Cam Newton being this good. Newton seems to have the ability to put the whole team on his back and simply will the team to a victory. It's hard to predict against that. Auburn gets a late defensive touchdown in an otherwise close game.

Arkansas 24
Auburn 34

P.S. - Entries are accepted until one hour before kickoff (1:30 PM CT) and if a user enters two scores, only the first counts. Also, if you only give a score and don't designate which score belongs to which team, I will assume that you are picking Auburn to win by that score.

I see this one being Auburn’s first lost. For whatever reason, Auburn just cannot seem to play Arkansas that well in the last few years. Until I see that streak end, I have no major reason to think it will not keep going that way. As always, I’d love to be wrong and I have been in the past.

Auburn’s offense isn’t as great as advertised. Their defense is even worse than advertised. The game against South Carolina was a gift, with so many South Carolina turnovers in the 4th Quarter. Cam Newton behind all 24 points.

We have your number the past few years and have won the last two at Jordan-Hare. For some reason, Auburn just doesn’t scare us like the Floridas and Alabamas of the SEC.

I thought it was JordAn-Hare.

But, of course, I’m not an Barner so I might have that wrong…..or might it be that because I’m not a Barner, I got it right?

Anyways, I highly doubt that you will put up 37 on us. We held Bama to 24 points, with their highly potent rushing attack. I’m max betting this game with my bookie. Arkansas plus 4 is a steal.

This argument...

Is quite stupid. Predicting a winner by who’s quarterback is in the Heisman talk in Week 7(?) is outlandish. Y’all’s defense is very, very bad.

Wooo Pig

by generalrazor on Oct 13, 2010 12:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Our defense isn't great, but it's not "very, very bad"

In terms of yards per play (a better metric than yards per game, especially for a defense that plays opposite Gus Malzahn’s offense):

Rushing: 2.8 ypr (12th nationally, 2nd in the SEC)
Passing: 6.6 ypa (49th nationally, 6th in the SEC)
Total: 4.8 ypp (26th nationally, 3rd in the SEC)

Arkansas is worse at rush defense (3.5) and is equal in pass defense, but slightly better at total (4.7), probably because teams throw the ball against us more than they do against Arkansas.

Auburn’s best win is an eight-point victory over South Carolina. Arkansas’ best win is almost beating Alabama.

UA 34 - AU 24

The real good guys go up early against an overmatched secondary and finally put together a complete game. Newton is a beast and will get his yards but Razorback D is on par with Hog’s 2006 squad – I’m sure you remember how that turned out.

Verne Lundquist channels Harry Carey in a spirited round of “Hey Gary, Hogs Win!! Hogs Win!!!” and the undefeated War Eagles Tigers get de-railed again…

WOO PIG SOOIE – RAZORBACKS!

by RazorBack76 on Oct 13, 2010 4:04 AM CDT reply actions

Bully for you and your 2006 defense.

That’s great. But there is a huge difference in defending the 2006 Tigers with Brandon Cox at the helm, vs the 2010 Tigers with Cam Newton at the helm. Coming into the Arkansas game in 2006, Auburn was averaging 182 yds passing and 173 yards rushing. Coming into the Arkansas game in 2010, Auburn IS averaging 207 yds/game passing (218, when the game is played at home), and 276 yds/game rushing (288 when the game is played at home).

I do remember the 2006 game; I was there. My husband and I got married on a Friday night so that we could go to the game the next day. Trust me when I say, there will be nothing on Saturday that resembles the 2006 game.

I will say this: I don’t see how we will stop them.

BREAKING NEWS: ESPN has several sources reporting that the University of Alabama's 1st string waterboy will be declaring himself eligible in the 2011 NFL draft. He projects as WR with 4.29 speed and a vertical of 12....feet.

by WarEagle86 on Oct 13, 2010 5:35 AM CDT reply actions

If they can't run....

They have to pass the ball. As good as they are at throwing the ball around, if Auburn can make the pass play a predictable 10-12 yard play, then we will win. It all starts with stopping the run.

Auburn's Problem Is Morning & Early Afternoon Games

if you’ve noticed. They can’t wake their butts up. This game, I think, is at 2:30. So, I hope Auburn will be awake enough by then. Turn the water hose on them, make them do jumping jacks and give them plenty of caffeine. Then, Auburn may win. This coming from behind crap didn’t work last year and won’t work this year either with Arkansas. But hopefully they learned from last year’s mistakes. This game is truly a defining moment for the season. Auburn 31 Ark 24!

AU 30 - Arky 28

After watching the Bama Arkansas game and seeing that Arkansas had no answer for the Wildcat Bama was running, I doubt we will have any problem moving the ball on them. With Cam at QB, we basically run a form of the wildcat all the time with a good passer on top of it. As long as we don’t give the ball away in our own RZ we should be able to hold them down enough to win. Mallet lacks the patients to throw underneath the whole game, and for that matter so does Petrino. Mallett has never played in a big game that he did not make mistakes, but we will have to gte the lead on them to clamp that pressure down that normally causes those mental miscues. I think we will play well enough defensively to put him in that position.

For all of the talk about how we looked defensively vs Kentucky, our defense has stepped up when it has been needed and made plays. The one caveat is that we absolutely can not give them a short field. Arkansas played their best game of the year at home vs. Alabama and lost. They will have to play better than that in our house on Saturday to win. I don’t think it happens.

WDE!!!!!

I believe the “D” gets pressure on Mallet and when its time to do or die he starts to makes critical errors. Just as he did in the Alabama game.

by drscott11 on Oct 14, 2010 11:41 AM CDT reply actions

This will be a close one...

I don’t see either team scoring more than 30 in this one. The Arkansas D is pretty solid sideline to sideline and lead the conference in sacks. I think the Hogs will play Cam like they did Tebow at FL last season.
If the Hogs play the second half like they did the last couple of games…we will be in trouble. Look for Leon to spy Cam all game and the rest of the front 7 to stay home and not over commit trying to reach the backfield. I think the winner of this game makes a couple key defensive stops, controls field position and wins the special teams battle. I’m not very good with predicting scores, but I think it will come down to a field goal. My guess is 27-24 Hogs. WPS!!!

Auburn’s game against Kentucky was at night when they should have been wide awake. They may have been in the first half but they surely went to sleep in the second half.
