Another Battle of Unbeatens!
Auburn will need some opportunistic play out of the defense.
War Eagle, everybody! It's really time to buckle up the chin straps this week, as Auburn will face one of its most physical games when undefeated LSU comes to town for a big CBS nationally televised matchup. A quick perusal of SEC stats reveals that LSU leads the SEC in both rushing and passing defense. The irresistible force meets the immovable object in this one. Auburn leads the league in rushing offense, averaging 283 yards per game. The LSU defense is only giving up 83 yards per game on the ground. Something will have to give! Head-hunting LSU linebacker Kelvin Sheppard is second in the league in tackles, with 66 on the season.
This is an awfully tough matchup for Auburn. It will easily be the best defense that we've seen on the field to this point. The LSU defense was expected to have some holes with 7 new starters, but aside from the opening game against North Carolina, those have been few and far between. LSU has held Vandy to 3, Mississippi State to 7, and West Virginia and Tennessee to 14 points each. The lone game on the slate where an opponent scored more than two touchdowns was against Florida in in Gaineville, where Florida managed 29.
One would think you'd look to that game for a blueprint on how to break down the LSU defense, but a closer examination gives few answers. Florida was held to 89 rushing yards and 154 in the air. How did they score 4 touchdowns? An LSU interception started them on the LSU 17 for one, and a fumble recovered on the LSU 16 started another. Florida ran a kickoff back for a score. Florida drove the field only once in the game for a touchdown, a drive aided by a 51 yard reception by Carl Moore.
The key for Auburn against the LSU defense will be offensive line play. Auburn MUST do better than it did a year ago in Baton Rouge, where LSU linemen camped out in the Auburn backfield. Auburn must open some running lanes, and create seams between the tackles. There won't be too many break away plays on the edge against this defense. Auburn must force LSU to commit more defenders to stopping the inside plays, which should open up some one on one play-action coverage. Above all else, Auburn must avoid putting the football on the ground. The only thing that has stopped the Auburn offense consistently this year is turnovers. Expect LSU to try to rip the ball out.
Auburn's taken some leaps in special teams play this season, but there are still some holes in the punting game, both kicking away and on returns. LSU was expected to have some transition troubles this year adding return detail to starting corner Patrick Peterson's duties, but Peterson has been brilliant. He's run two punts back for scores, and has been on the brink of breaking a number of kicks. Peterson's averaging 21 yards per punt return, and 28 yards per kick return. Considering that Auburn only manages about 37 yards per punt, I'd expect Auburn to go for it on many 4th downs, especially in LSU territory. LSU's usually stellar kick coverage numbers took a bit of a hit with the Florida return for a touchdown a couple of weeks ago, but LSU's still only giving up 19.9 yards per return. Auburn's most dramatic improvement this year on special teams has been kick coverage. Opponents are managing 20.3 yards per return this season. That's down about 3 and a half yards from a year ago. Auburn kick returner Demond Washington is averaging 25.2 yards per return.
Much has been made over LSU's imagined offensive woes. With a defense that holds everyone to two offensive touchdowns or less, there's no reason for LSU to risk the ball on throws down the field. The purple and gold clad Tigers focus on knocking out some first downs, and maintaining good field position. They've rung up a record of 7-0 with this strategy. The Auburn defense has actually been pretty decent at stopping running plays between the tackles, thanks to the presence of tackle Nick Fairley and middle linebacker Josh Bynes. Opponents are being held to 3.0 yards per rush, which doesn't look too bad next to the LSU defense, which gives up 2.4. Where Auburn has been vulnerable is on the edge, both on screens and running plays. LSU has the players to hurt Auburn on the edge. Stevan Ridley is averaging 98 yards per game at 4.9 yards per carry, and leads a committee of about 4 backs.
Russell Sheppard is a threat as both a slot receiver and a wildcat quarterback. Auburn hasn't matched up on receivers well all year, and LSU features two good ones on the outside, Reuben Randle and Terrence Tolliver. Tolliver proved that he can win the big game, two weeks ago with a big catch in the Florida end zone. You won't find the knowledgeable Auburn fan bashing LSU quarterbacks. We've got painful memories of Jordan Jefferson's scrambles and big throws last season against us, and who can forget Jarrett Lee taking apart the Auburn secondary in the second half in 2008? With Auburn's situation in the secondary, Those two quarterbacks are a big worry. Auburn lost starting free safety Aaron Savage for the season last week. Replacement options are junior Mike McNeil, and sophomore Ikeem Means. McNeil's got a good bit of experience, but has played banged up all year. He also is not a fast as Savage was. In limited action, Means has looked good. He's got good closing speed, and will hit. The former walk-on has never been tested in the heat of a big SEC battle, though. Starting nickel back T'Sharvan Bell is questionable for this one, too. 3rd and 4th cornerbacks may be true freshman Chris Davis and sophomore Anthony Morgan. All eyes are on the Auburn secondary in this one!
I fully believe this game will require the winning team to score at least 35 points. Auburn's likely to give up 30. The key will be line play. Neither team can afford to let the other run the ball well. We've seen what happens to LSU when they don't win up front on the offensive line. We get the Tennessee game late "heroics." When Auburn doesn't win on the offensive line, we get the second half of the Mississippi State game, or the first half against Clemson. It's important for Auburn players to remember that we HAVE been stopped this year, and it happened when Cameron Newton and co. had no room to operate on the line. This game will be an old-fashioned war in the trenches, and may the nastiest team win!

As always, this stat reflect the yards gained per pass attempt, with a 50 yard penalty taken out for each interception. It's interesting to note that two quarterbacks from the state of Alabama are tied at the top! Yes, for all the gnashing of teeth over Greg McElroy taking sacks, he's pretty darned efficient when he lets the ball go. That's why Alabama is 6-1, and the road to the SEC West title goes through Tuscaloosa. Raise your hand, if you thought there would be 8 SEC quarterbacks ahead of Florida's John Brantley at this stage of the game!
As usual, we'll have an open thread up here at TrackEmTigers.com. As always, stop by and sound off! I'll be in Jordan Hare Stadium for this one, so there won't be my usual histrionics on the thread. I'll be there in section 32 screaming my head off! War Eagle, and beat LSU!

totally agree
like all of us I was wary about Cam (especially after miss state game) if he could carry the team when the time came. Well after that Arkansas game (and Scar, and clemson, etc etc) I am completely sold. I don’t think he will let the team lose and no one can stop him on the field. Im normally very critical of the team but this kid is a wonder to behold.
I WAS feeling good about this game until I read that preview Acid!!
Now I’m not so sure. We have a real hard time with “Wilcat” Athletes and every QB seems to turn into Johnny Unitas against us. Surely we are do a break but I just worried their D will keep Cam in check.
Col.Angus may be rough, Col.Angus may not smell like a bed of roses, but deep down Col.Angus is very sweet. If I overstay my welcome, just tap me on the head!!
No kidding
Come on Acid… I was thinking that this game would be revenge for last season, now I am not so sure. Thanks for bringing me down :)

Mighty fine read...
There is no getting around this, if you want to win a championship.
LSU is tough, confident, and eager to show the world that have more than just luck.
I’m looking for a good old fashioned slugfest.
WAR EAGLE!
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
absolutely. great summary acid. spot on.
there really aren’t many unknowns here. even with new guys filling in within the AU secondary… the weakness is still an area you would think the LSU team would look to exploit. Russell Sheperd was one of the VERY FEW bright spots on this team in their spring game. he is clearly a guy who can really hurt a D in the open field. (proved that in last year’s game)
with him at the slot, this is the most dangerous guy on the field in the LSU offense. AU will really have to gang tackle in this game. to borrow a basketball term… they are going to have to play ‘help defense’ all game long.
in the end, as you say, this will be a slugfest…and all about who can control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
i would not be surprised if LSU leans on their run game that has started to look a bit more dynamic with ridley and ford back getting carries. both these guys don’t fall down on their own…they have to be wrapped up.
watching the replay of mcneese st. last night…. i did notice that the LSU Dline did get caught flying into the backfield without letting the play happen in front of them. they seemed over anxious at times. speed RBs for mcneese st. were able to bump runs to the outside, and even run in btwn tackles on this LSU D.
LSU looked lightning fast on D… as they did in the spring… but did look like they could be out muscled at the point of attack. i don’t think they’ll be able to stop cam newton, but they will close on him much quicker than other Ds so far. i don’t expect cam to have the long runs he’s had, but will still be effective on short yardage.
as much as i leaned early toward a run game vs. run game feel to this one… it could easily turn into quite the opposite. 6’-5" LSU WR tolliver and russell shepard in the slot will have mismatches all day long against the AU secondary. i just can’t find any significant mismatches for Auburn on the offensive side of the ball… other than possibly our Oline’s muscle against the lighter LSU Dline.
i would go 4 and 5 wide all game long if i were Malzahn. I would send guys long and open up the 2nd layer of the LSU D. My game plan would assume that the AU Oline is going to be able to push the LSU Dline all day. I would throw to fannin, lutz, and burns… and go heavy on decoys running down the field and gassing the LSU secondary. i think that O-mac should be given another chance to return the ball, because he might be taken out of the run game this week.- against the speed of LSU. i wouldn’t throw one wide screen pass to blake or T-zac. the risk of that play isn’t worth the reward. too much speed on LSU’s D(even at LB)
this is a game where i really wish we had ladarious phillips for 3 and 4 yards/ carry.
as has always been the case… Auburn has got to establish a dynamic run game to slow the pass rush from the outside. (LSU’s DE are very quick off the ball)
AU WRs have got to work off of play action to help them get separation if we are going to have a decent time passing the ball.
i don’t buy the hype of this game as being summarized down to AU’s Oline vs. LSU’s Dline. the difference in this one comes down to turnovers (just like last game), and special teams.

Great preview Acid. As usual.
Can’t wait for this one!

BTW, I think this game comes down to turnovers.
I don’t think LSU has played a game yet this year where we didn’t turn it over. I’m not going to look it up, but out of our 7 games this year, I bet we’ve turned it over at least 2 times in 6 of those games.

I think that we all knew this one was going to be a tough one.
As much as we talk about the ‘Lesticle Luck Factor’, the truth is that LSU is also stacked with talent. It is mute point to mention that this game will be won by ‘who wants it more’—both teams WANT it! Both teams can win it too!
I think that it will come down to turnovers AND clock management at the end. Cam might be momentarily stopped, but I do not think that LSU can contain him for very long, not with our O-line. Something that is good about our defense is that Ted Roof knows how to make adjustments, he never sugar coats deficiencies—he is great at building a D with what he has. Remember when the invites to Atlanta in December were decided by this game?? Well get ready to go retro and get ready to Rumble! Strike fear into the hearts of the Bayou Bengals!
War Eagle! Beat the Hell out of LSU!!!
PS-hope that you have a blast at the game, Acid!

All good points TOTM.
… I agree with each.
Also another good prereview Acid. Its got to where I don’t bother reading much of anyone else’s previews. I’m sure nervous about this one, especially after last week’s wild and wooly shootout.

Thanks
I have been meaning to comment on your piece about the D. I thought it was really well done. I am sooooo tired of all the whining about the defense…not saying that I don’t yell at the TV about the missed tackles etc., but the D tends to close ranks and get the job done at crucial moments.
I look forward to your posts. Thanks a bunch and War Eagle! Hope that you have fun at the game on Saturday too!

I think LSU will make a strong effort to contain or outright stop Newton.
AU must prove that they can beat people this way. Its how we will have to win another big game down the road most likely, so Auburn will have to prove that Newton can get the ball into the hands of the open man. I think we will see LSU sit back a little and challenge Newton to see how much he can get, this may allow them to bring more tacklers to him more quickly. We’ll have to see how it plays out. The LSU DC Chavis will bring blitzes, but blitzing may not be the answer. Malzahn will have to call a great game, and I think he will.
BREAKING NEWS: ESPN has several sources reporting that the University of Alabama's 1st string waterboy will be declaring himself eligible in the 2011 NFL draft. He projects as WR with 4.29 speed and a vertical of 12....feet.
GREAT POINTS.
great challenge for both sides in this game. there’s a big surprise in for one of these teams.
i think those who anticipate a run away game for Auburn are completely off their rocker.
it isn’t as much about out smarting the opponent (that will be accomplished in pregame warm-ups)… it might be more about turning the challenge on its head and offering up a game plan that wasn’t prepared for by the other team. proving that your team is the more flexible and dynamic. that might have to happen going into the game… or during adjustments at halftime.
win or lose, coaches will have earned their paycheck after this one.

30 points??
If Auburn gives up 30 points to LSU, regardless of why they don’t score much, I cannot see Auburn scoring 31 points against this defense. This is the best defense Auburn will face this year. I don’t see the team putting up that many scores against LSU. Roof and the defense will have to play better. There is no way around it. If they don’t, I have a hard time seeing Auburn winning this game. By the way, to the others coming in just talking about Cam Newton, we have many athletes. He is the best we have, but there are other players who are really good. Whether they play like that against LSU is another story, but they are a solid bunch of players.

It can be frustrating with only Cam being mentioned.
We know that Cam could not be as effective as he is without a solid O-line, good receivers, good blockers, corp of running backs, etc. Even though it seems like the Newton show, even Cam knows that it is all about team effort, not just what one person can do on the field. War Eagle, Sparkey!

Good analysis, I was curious if Auburn has a good place kicker--Jasper has been...
very good although he was not himself against McNeese missing an extra point and close field goal, but did recover to kick a field goal towards the end.
"It felt like a whole new beginning for us, bad memories left behind and a new horizon to build on. I got so worked up, I had a tattoo done on my arm that said FAMOUS TIMES, and Edna bought a Bailey hat with an Indian feather band and a little turquoise-and-silver bracelet for Cheryl, and we made love on the seat of the car in the Quality Court parking lot just as the sun was burning up on the Snake River, and everything seemed then like the end of the rainbow."
--Richard Ford from the short story, "Rock Springs"
Okay, I don't see it...
watched the replay of the LSU / McNeese game last night…maybe they were looking ahead, whatever. You know you suck when your own fans are booing you…LSU. They remind me of Bama, not really great / not really bad. The corndogs will play lights out, so we’ll just have to see what happens..
"For the love of everything holy...NOT Ohio State again!!!
Looking ahead!
LSU players and coaches were definitely using this game to establish a second running back.. The play calling was more vanilla than the spring game. I think the coaches were just trying to get younger guys some experience and to give players a little rest, while AU fought hard against Arkansas. Glorified bye week

I'm glad everyone enjoyed this preview!
…..It’s going to be a very tough game. In a lot of ways, this will be the biggest test of the regular season for both teams.
LSU has a good defense but.....
I’m not sold that they are world beaters at this point. The highest offensive ranking in offense in the FBS so far this season is by one of their opponents is 46 (West Virginia). The average is in the 60’s. Florida is in the 90’s and still scored 29 on them. They have not played anything close to as talented of an offense as we have. I think we score 30 easy. Can we keep them to fewer points? I think so if, as has been pointed out numerous times here, we don’t cough the ball up and give them a gift or two. AU wins 38-24
correction on the O ranks for their opponents:
The previous numbers where rushing yards. This is where they currently rank in total offensive yardage.
West Virginia 77th
North Carolina 73rd
Vandy 109th
Miss St’ 36
Tennessee 104th
Florida 67th
Mceese St. N/A
Auburn ranks 7th nationally and 4th in rushing yardage.
Florida
A kick off return for a TD. a terrible interception returned to the 1 yard line, ran the ball in for a TD. A muffed put inside the 15 yard line for a TD. 21 points form turn overs and special teams. Florida had one drive and that was on a attempted pass break up that the Cb missed that went for 51 yards. If you watched the game LSU just shot themselves in the foot.

They have the fastest Defense...
there have been times when a D’s speed has been used AGAINST them…
with all the misdirection, it will be interesting to see what GM has designed to turn that to our advantage. What sort of Ace’s are up the offensive guru’s sleeve?
I don’t know what to think of this game really. On paper LSU is scary, on the field even their own people say “LSU just shot themselves in the foot.” ????
It’s the classic match-up! SEC Smash mouth football!! Can’t wait!!!
