Defense Wins Championships! Or So I'm Told
Auburn's Special Teams looking to play a big role in Saturdays game vs. LSU
Two factors were evidently better about this Auburn team than at any point last year. Offense and Special Forces, the term Coach Boulware uses for his hardest playing special teams players every week. While we can all see the huge importance special teams play in putting the defense in good field position, we can also see our defense has a difficult time keeping opponents on their side of the field, much less with three and outs.
In 2004 Auburn's defense allowed an impressive 104 yards per game rushing, in 2009 it gave an exact 50 yards per game more. So far, through the 2010 campaign our defense has only allowed 101.7 yards per. A dramatic improvement, considering the talent we have faced. This will be a key factor in the upcoming battles with the three teams we have losing streaks with, LSU, Georgia, and Alabama. All like to run to set up the pass.
Zac Etheridge is a force in run stops, as is Josh Bynes, but give credit where it's due. Ted Roof's goal for 2010 was to stop the run, and try to limit the amount of big plays teams can have against our secondary. Coach Chizik mentioned this several times in press conferences before the season, and since it got started. Thus far this year it's worked to perfection. Arkansas aside, nobody else has consistently been successful going deep on Auburn.
More after the jump..
The most significant aspect of any college football program is the recruiting. Auburn has done exceptionally well with the class and a half it has signed under Coach Chizik's watchful eye. The two years leading up to the Chizik hire saw Auburn fall woefully short on the recruiting trail. Nowhere is that more evident than at the defensive back positions.
The old style of recruiting was to get whomever they wanted and coach 'em up. That has left Chizik and his defensive staff in a situation to do none other than that, at least until they can find the type of personnel they deem as fit.
Only 2 of the 4 star DB recruits that Auburn has signed, over the last four classes**, are still with Auburn. They are Mike McNeil, and T'Sharvan Bell. No less than 3 DB's rated 4 stars have left the team. That makes our secondary look like a puzzle with a couple of pieces missing.
We have a converted 3 star running back now playing corner, and a 3 star DB playing linebacker. For all the pieces to fit in the right place , they must be cut correctly, or our aforementioned puzzle looks a little wacky.
Coach Lolley said earlier this week that Auburn tried multiple variations, and looks to try and confuse the Arkansas QB's, but you could tell they were really well coached. They kept making the right reads and making the play, until right at the end, when the defense shut them down.
I am extremely proud of this Auburn team. They never give up, and they have not quit in a game yet this season. Part of that has to be coaching. For one thing, we are we are being mentioned in the National Championship talk, somebody is doing something right.

Great article.
Excellent points that we all need to keep in mind. This staff has done a job in a year and a half that no one thought could br done. Who would have thought that we would be # 5 in the nation and undefeated at this point in the second season. Not me and probably not many other Auburn fans either.

Well said. The Defense is part of the reason why we are 7-0.
This is along the lines of aubertigerman’s post a couple of days ago. Many fans are so hard on the defense—like we are 4-3 and losing all of the big games. And I don’t mean to bash those fans—missed tackles, blown coverages, the long balls that get away are all very frustrating to watch. BUT This team has met challenges, faced them, and most importantly, defeated them. It didn’t matter how many times Arky burned our secondary. They marched right back out there and kept on making plays. This Saturday is a tough test. I think that we are all holding our breathes a little bit. But I believe that this team is special, and when things get rough on Saturday (and we know that they will), this Auburn team will rally! As fans, our job is simple: believe and scream your happy little head off! These Tigers need to hear our voices!!

I've never questioned the defense's efforts.
But the play has been down in my opinion. Down from an acceptable level. I know we do not have a shut down defense, not even close actually. But we’ve given more than a couple of opponents little trouble in moving the ball. That’s discouraging. But I don’t think that the approach is lazy, maybe just misguided.
BREAKING NEWS: ESPN has several sources reporting that the University of Alabama's 1st string waterboy will be declaring himself eligible in the 2011 NFL draft. He projects as WR with 4.29 speed and a vertical of 12....feet.
Food for thought!
The D may not be a shut down type but it sure has mangled up some QB’s. I think all but two games has seen the strarting QB’s slammed , hog tied , and benched heading into the clutches of the game.

Dude has some serious issues...
I don’t hate LSU, their fans, their colors, or their damn pathetic mascot. I do however want to beat them now even more so, than I did prior to reading that!

Really? Are we talking trash about our mascots now?
Page 2 would disagree with your opinion…

Mascot Fact of the Week
This is Auburn’s official tiger mascot. This is LSU’s official tiger mascot. No matter who wins this Saturday’s game, I think we all know the real winner.

Wow Jono,
Didn’t know you felt so strongly. You spend a heck of lot of time on this board for someone who hates us so much!
By the way – Good read KoolBell.
Jonno..
I was trash talking, yes I was. I was doing it in jest, and in particular in the vien of the Posuer post. Just having fun, honest.

Huh?
Is Aubie signing “The Shocker” in that 2nd picture? Maybe that’s why she’s smiling, or conversely, why she’s sitting down…
One more reason why Aubie is so AUsome!
It's a good hate
As poseur posted on here earlier this week, most of our fanbase enjoys that this rivalry came about naturally because we are frequently the best teams in the west and play meaningful, close games. It’s tough to bring the hate when our game is meaningless. That is not the case this time, so we have two relatively hateless seasons to make up for.

I came up with a few more reasons for them to hate us :
I hate Auburn because when they got hosed in 2004, BCS guilt enabled us to go to the NCG in 2007 with two losses, including the last regular season game.
I hate Auburn because we barely have a winning record against them instead of getting stomped like we do against Alabama.
Speaking of which, I hate Auburn because we never went through 31 years of losing on our home field against them.
I hate Auburn because they should be the east and we should get to play Vandy every single year instead.
I hate Auburn because they chose to play Georgia from the east every year, leaving us with Florida, which is scary.
I hate Auburn because our game is always the 3:30 feature CBS game of the week.
I hate Auburn because all our games get nicknamed, like the Earthquake Game and the Interception game.
I hate Auburn because two of our three biggest rivals come from the state of Alabama, having no other worthy teams in the state.
I hate Auburn because they defy our 4.3 year average coaching tenure on the Bayou.
I hate Auburn because we stole our Tiger nickname from them.

OK, ...
…..I’m so stoke for this game I can’t count. From the home office in Atlanta, GA, the top ten reasons LSU fans hate Auburn! /rimshot.
Auburn D
When we were recruiting Trovon Reed last year, I thought he could be a really awesome cornerback. Auburn will have a good offense with or without him but he could be really good at a need position. I’ll be interested to see if you guys look at him on that side of the ball. Any chance he gets a medical redshirt?
On the run D. I look for LSU to try and get really physical running the ball early, especially on the perimeter. We need to make your linebackers respect the perimeter running game to open up the middle and exploit the secondary very effectively at opportune times. Don’t throw more, just get as much as possible when you do. A depleted secondary means our passes should be more effective, but it doesn’t mean we should make our weakness a focus of our offense. Unless, of course, we get down early. Then all bets are off.
