Just What The Doctor Ordered
On a day that started before the local Waffle House thinned out, Auburn got exactly what it wanted from its 52-3 victory over Louisiana-Monroe: lots of rest for its starters. Who cares that half the students didn't bother showing up. After all, The Supper Club had only been closed a few hours. Give them a pass.
On the flip side, give this Auburn team an A+ for effort. After a month of emotionally charged football, a victory in the neighborhood of 30 points would have been acceptable. Instead, Cam Newton and company fired up the buzz saw early and often, giving fans in the stands a chance to relax and bask in the early morning East Alabama sun.
As funny as it sounds, when the book is closed on the 2010 season, Auburn may point to Saturday's win as one of its biggest. With seven weeks to go before the first open date, Auburn coaches got the starters on the bench quickly and a lot of young players grew up in the second half. Pundits can criticize all they want, but scheduling these kinds of games at strategic points in the season can go a long ways determining the success of your season...
How do you explain what's happening at Georgia? Raise your hand if you thought this was the year the Dawgs could break away from the pack and challenge in the SEC East. What kind of odds could you have gotten in August if you'd bet that Colorado would start off 3-1, while Georgia would stumble to 1-4?
All of the sudden, the next two games with Tennessee and Vanderbilt don't look so winnable anymore. Can Mark Richt survive? With Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech still ahead, I don't like his chances...
Do you think Florida coach Urban Meyer ever allows himself to wonder what his team would be like with Cam Newton? On Saturday, Joe Montana would have struggled guiding this pathetic Florida team. It's amazing that with all that talent, they could look so lost and slow against Alabama. Give Bama credit, they are improving on defense each week. They looked nothing like the unit that played in Fayetteville last Saturday...
Here are my top five for the week: (1) Alabama; (2) Oregon; (3) Ohio State; (4) TCU; (5) Oklahoma...
Back in the days when former Georgia coach Vince Dooley roamed the sidelines, he was considered one of the luckiest coaches in America - see Lindsey Scott! Lindsey Scott! It was fitting that his son would be on the receiving end of one the most bizarre finishes in college football history.
I still haven't sorted it all out in my head, but I do know that when you put 13 players on the field, good things never happen. On the flip side, has there ever been a more maligned coach who's 5-0 than Les Miles. His offense is dreadful, yet they continue to win and will be dangerous when the visit Jordan-Hare on October 23rd...
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I was quite surprised Clemson lost at home to Miami coming off a bye week...
Oregon is playing as good a football as anyone in America including Alabama...
I'll go out on a limb and say that South Carolina will be Alabama's toughest test yet this Saturday in Columbia. An Alabama victory means that only Auburn stands in the way of another run to the BCS Championship...
Don't forget to visit The O'Brien Quarterback Award site and vote for Cam Newton as the nation's top quarterback. The fan vote counts for 5 percent. You can vote once a day after registering. Currently, Newton sits in ninth place with 4 percent of the vote...
Speaking of Newton, despite not having to carry the ball on Saturday, he still ranks first nationally in points per game and second in passing efficiency behind Utah quarterback Terrance Cain. Newton is averaging 20.4 points a game through the air and on the ground. He's 72 passing yards shy of the 1,000 yard mark. After leading the SEC in rushing through last week, Newton dropped to fourth this week after carrying only once for -11 yards against ULM.

Jay, you hit the nail on the head about the LA-Monroe game.
It was very nice to see Auburn handle a team they were supposed to. Got some very important players some very important rest. Now, the guys have got to shift their focus and get ready for Kentucky. Good read Jay.
I think we will have your answer on the Richt question, sooner rather than later. If he can’t get his first SEC win against Tennessee next week there may not be any salvaging going on. He may be let go immediately.

BREAKING NEWS: ESPN has several sources reporting that the University of Alabama's 1st string waterboy will be declaring himself eligible in the 2011 NFL draft. He projects as WR with 4.29 speed and a vertical of 12....feet.
After this week's 'loss' to LSU, I think that Tenn is going to come out guns blazing.....
or completely demoralized and lost. Anyway, I think that the Tenn/Georgia game is really hard to predict, because both teams are in such disarray. It may be a game that is decided by who screws up less.

Kentucky is in trouble...
You can bet your sweet A** that these coaches will not let this team off the hook this week. Even Yoxall used the
“KY Jelly” game as a motivator this past year.
Cam needs more improvement on his passing game, and it’s still one of the better in the country, wow!
Malzahn is a GENIUS!
Jay Coulter is the MAN!
Thanks Jay

Cam threw some VERY VERY dangerous balls Saturday.
I hope it was because he was trying to ‘practice’ mid game. I mean obviously we weren’t being threatened by Monroe. But he’s got to be a lot more carefuler? in the red zone throwing the football. Looking off defenders and making smart decisions there will lead this team to some big time successes down the line in 2010.
The big big issue I have with this team right now is pass defense. Its been just enough thus far, but if it continues to lack Arkansas may very well have a field day with us. At this point we have faced a good group of receivers (South Carolina) and a pretty good QB (Clemson). Both of those teams moved the ball pretty well on us through the air. Arkansas will have both a great QB and a great group of receivers to throw to so that will be the challenge of the year IMO.

I Voted Yes On RIcht Not Being ;)
But only because of what I’ve been told is a 8 to 9 million dollar buy out.
Of course I was also one of the guys raising their hand thinking UGa might make life interesting for UF in the East.
U.Ga, plays UT, Vandy, Idaho State, Kentucky, UF, Auburn and Ga,Tech.
Hmmm.
Can I take my vote back. :)
Georgia has always...
…..been a team that makes mistakes and gets stupid penalties, at least under their last three coaches (Goff, Donnan, Richt). They were also so talented that they could get by with it. I think a lot of teams in their division (SC, UK, even Vandy) have closed the talent gap significantly while UGA’s been doin’ that soulja boy.
……This year, the mistakes remain, but they’ve installed a defensive scheme that they don’t have the personnel to run on top of other problems. Still, if they get a game where they stop the drive killing penalties, and their players hold onto the ball, they’ll beat someone good and shock us. I tuned away from the Bama Florida game a lot late, and watched UGA. They’ve got MUCH better players than Colorado, but found ways to foul drives up. I think Richt will knock off a good team or two, and be spared one more year. Could be mistaken on that, though, given the volatility of the Georgia administration lately. Richt and co will have to make a desperation grab for a big, ready-to-play JUCO nose tackle. With Aaron Murray a little more seasoned, and a defense that actually has a chance to stop people, Georgia could rebound a little next year.
I remember that damn dance
I still have not forgotten that and they tried to show us up best they could which they did. I want this year to put the dogs back in the dog pound. We’ve been beaten for too long and we owe them for that “Black Out.” I’d like to see us win with a “Blue Out” again of our own and I hope we keep the hammer down. I don’t want to let off the pedal when we get them in our stadium this year. I want to see us destroy them and hurt Mark Richt and Georgia in a really rough way. They’re hurting, and I want to make them feel worse. I just don’t think we should dance, we’ll do that on the scoreboard.
I was at that game....
And to hear those morons go crazy over friggin uniforms was ridicuolous. Of course we just stank up the joint and watching those hoodlums dance and disrespect us was almost more than I could bear. I just sat there and FUMED, saying wait till next year. Well that was three years ago and I’m still waiting for payback!!
While I would LOVE to return the favor, I would never want our players to look so unprofessional. I hope we just curb stomp them into oblivion and smash their soulja boy gold teeth all over Jordan Hare and send Richt into exile with a Hobnail boot sticking out of his ass!!
Everbody thinks of Richt as being this good guy… and he does a lot of good Christian things….but he has really done some crass, bush stuff over the years that makes me rethink my position on that. I’m sure he was just letting his kids have fun….but his kids are thugs and thats what happens when you let thugs have fun. You get embarrassed by them. Well as the Rev. Wright would say " THE CHICKENS!!! ARE COMING HOME!! TO ROOOOOST!!"
I would love for us to run up the score and go politely give Richt the ball after the last touchdown. Something for him to remember us by.
Col.Angus may be rough, Col.Angus may not smell like a bed of roses, but deep down Col.Angus is very sweet. If I overstay my welcome, just tap me on the head!!
I agree.
I want us to run up the score as well. I hope we score again when the game clock is running out and if we are on the 30-15 yard line, I hope we get a field goal. However we can, I hope we score and score often. I think this Auburn team is different than last year’s and I also think that Georgia’s team is not as good as it was last year. I want this one really, really bad.
Tru Dat
We needed a laugher in the worst way and got one. The ULM QB, Browing, was very impressive early. He would have done well even against Bama for a while. He was getting rid of the ball quickly and hitting his receivers on quick salnts and outs before defenders made adjustments. Their receiver, Ambrose, is one of the fastest athletes in college football so I think the plan Rood had was to not let anybody get behind the DB’s and make Browning matriculate his way down the field, hoping they would bog down. And they did.
That won’t work against Akansas, but I am pleased with the development of the defense so far this year. I really think, if we can throw some confusing blitz packages at Mallet we can force him into some mistakes. He is an excellent QB but he gets a little jumpy under pressure. The key in that game will be to keep attacking. If we let him sit in the pocket, he will find the empty zone.
But first we have to beat Kentucky. This game still scares me because they have good athletes and can play as physical as any other SEC out there. Last years game was a lot more physical than I think we were ready for and they wore us out in the second half. Hopefully the staff will have them properly prepared…..that means no dumb penalties and no turnovers. If we are going to be a threat to Alabama, we need to get serious about that aspect of our game….to steel the mind…and MAKE our opponents beat us. Only Alabama can hang with us if we play mistake free football. If we can do that we WILL challenge for the SEC and the National title.
Speaking of Alabama, they are just scary good. If it weren’t for Saban and Bama fans, I would really find it hard not to like them. They play empassioned defense with lots of different looks and gritty smash mouth offensive football. I love to see a team line it up and dare you to stop them and work play action off that. Its still the best way to win football games and Alabama does it better than anybody. Greg McElroy doesn’t scare anybody behind center but all he does is win….it helps to have two unmitigated beasts behind you running the ball….but he makes all the plays and hasn’t ever lost. Thats just amazing. Oregon, Oklahoma, Nebraska, BSU, TCU????
Nobody holds a candle to the Tide. As good as we played last year, we will have to play twice as good to beat them on their own field. I hope we do the deed the rest of the way and show them our bloody fangs as we challenge them for football supremacy.
Col.Angus may be rough, Col.Angus may not smell like a bed of roses, but deep down Col.Angus is very sweet. If I overstay my welcome, just tap me on the head!!
Outstanding post Colonel. Well thought out and well put.

Not sayin' that we shouldn't worry about Kentucky,
because we wouldn’t be hardened Auburn fans if we didn’t wring our hands a little. Lest the scourge of overconfidence defeat us. BUT, the Arkansas game makes me way more nervous. That game is so hard to predict. It’s good that we get these teams later in the season, because it allows the Tigers to get down and steady. At the same time, teams like Arkansas get beaten down a little bit and then they come out harder and faster. It’s freakin’ me out, man!

SEC confusion
so i have a question hopefully someone can clarify for me.
lets say that south carolina loses to bama… and then florida loses to south carolina… how is an east sec victor chosen ???
i fully see the west coming down to an iron bowl showdown … and that would be an epic iron bowl !!! rtr and keep playing strong tigers i cant wait for the showdown.
Assuming those are the only 2 losses for USCe and UF, then USCe would win the division based on the head to head win over UF.

okay umm butttt
so how about if… bama loses to say USC and Aub stays undefeated but then bama wins the iron bowl….who would get the west in that scenario.
Oregon has a very potent offense...
but, they don’t have squat for a defense….Alabama would beat them like red headed step children. Just sayin.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Good read
I agree the ULM type games are needed to sandwich in some games to get the starters some rest and the reserves experience. This could well be an important game when all is said and done.
