A Week We'll Not Soon Forget
I don't believe it's a stretch to say that today has been unlike any other in Auburn football history. Cam Newton is THE story in all of sports this November 10th. What to make of all the allegations are difficult. There's no question today's ESPN story takes this situation to an entirely different level.
Auburn has been implicated - by someone. And that's what makes this entire saga confusing. Stories have been broken by The New York Times, ESPN.com and Fox Sports and not once has there been a shred of proof.
Pardon the Interruption host Mike Wilbon was asked on the radio a little while ago to compare Newton's allegations with those of Reggie Bush. His answer was right on target. Talking with Scott Van Pelt, Wilbon said the primary difference is there's no smoking gun in the Newton case.
He pointed out that Auburn officials have been steadfast in defending Newton and appear to be inviting anyone to prove them wrong. Wilbon went on to say that his gut tells him nothing will come of it.
That may be the case. But my gut tells me Newton's Heisman Trophy chances are in jeopardy. Right or wrong, the Bush incident is not helping Newton. As for Auburn's national title hopes, this drama has no effect on their chances of playing for a title. At least not yet.
There was one unsettling comment made by Newton's father, Cecil to Fox Sports.com. Commenting on the recent allegations, the elder Newton said, "I'm not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place," he said.
That worries me.
If I'm innocent of something, I'm screaming it as loud as I can. It's something Newton Sr. has done continuously since the first story broke. Why now has he changed his response?
This I do believe: Auburn officials are 100 percent confident in what they've been told by both Cam and his father. The SEC office has had this information since January and didn't act on it. Auburn officials have had the same information for nearly a year. Both the institution and the conference saw nothing that would prohibit Newton from enrolling and playing.
My bigger concern is what exactly does Cecil Newton know and is he holding anything back? I would hate for Auburn officials to be blindsided. That stated, everything Newton Sr. has said so far has checked out, including personal and business checking and savings accounts. Outwardly, it appears he's a good man. As an Auburn person, I choose to take him at his word.
Unfortunately, this story is not likely to be resolved anytime soon. How the Auburn team responds to this whirlwind week will not be known until Saturday afternoon. These allegations are something the team will likely live with through the Iron Bowl, SEC Championship and perhaps the national championship game.
Regardless of the outcome, you have to give kudos to athletic director Jay Jacobs and Gene Chizik. They have been credible and believable through this entire nightmare. Let's hope the team takes something from them when they tee it up with Georgia Saturday afternoon.

There comes a time

I agree with you WEA.
I think that he is just sick speaking on the situation period. I would be really sick of it myself too.
I am not worried about Cecil's comments.
Partly because of what WEA has stated above and partly because look at what he has said and how it has been taken out of context, misconstrued or just plain ignored—and for what? ESPN is still flinging accusations like pancakes at the IHOP. For all we know, Cecil is acting at the behest of his lawyers, because he does want to do what is best for Cam. In that we can believe.
I hope that the Team can rally and take all aggression out on Georgia! War Eagle! Beat Georgia!!

I wish he and cam
would just stick with “no comment; next question”. People will read into whatever they want. Jay, if he had said no comment would it have worried you?
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Personally, no...
but in today’s world, some people would see it as, I have something to hide. You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. That comment just stuck out to me. It may be that he’s just sick and tired of the questions. If I was advising him, I’d say don’t answer the phone. No news is good news at this point. Let the University handle the defense. They are doing a great job.
When you can't face your accuser there is no use in responding to the allegations.
I would say I am innocent but then again Cecil knows who he is dealing with and probably knows that ANYTHING he has done or said, could be twisted around and used against him.
The best example would be that how the media itself is handling this. Headlines scream: NEWTON ADMITS TO PAY-FOR-PLAY IN TELEPHONE CONVERSATION…..that is an allegation that is being reported as fact.
Also take into account the amount of time and energy being spent on this by the media putting Cam and Cecil under the microscope and utterly NO energy whatsoever into investigating who the sources are and what evidence they have.
I don’t blame them at all, besides they could scream I’m innocent from the top of the mountain until their lungs bled and the only ones who would still believe them would be the Auburn family. The media isn’t concerned with the truth, just the controversy. And they are LOVING this.

weatherman syndrome
The media has had an itchy trigger finger on this one, in this day of texting, blogging and tweeting the media is in a frenzy over being the first one to break the next big story. Not enough time to check facts, validate sources, etc. It’s like everyone is a weatherman these days, make your prediction (hurricanes, twisters and locusts)….if you turn out to be wrong, no big deal, by next week everyone is on to the next big story, if you’re right you just made a name for yourself. I choose to believe Cam, although my gut tells me the truth is somewhere between “he’s never done anything wrong”, and “everyone in the SEC but Vandy participated in a silent auction to get him to commit”.
Let’s hope this is another case of “Congratulations President Gore” , oops, my bad, we broke that story a little too soon, didn’t have the facts or the count completed.
I hope Auburn comes out clean, the greatest travesty would be for this to cost Cam Heisman votes, and surely it will, only to have him vindicated in the end….
Good luck to Cam, now is the time to activate tunnel vision…

I think...
one of the the saddest parts is that, regardless what happened, in the court of public opinion he is already held guilty and his name will forever be linked to this. He is black, an athlete, and has been in trouble with the law before. If this was John Brantley the media narrative would be completely different.
I absolutely cannot believe how things have escalated today.
I’m afraid to fall asleep tonight because I don’t know what I’ll wake up to. The last few mornings have been rough on Auburn.
What worries me most:
-We’ve heard nothing from Slive or the NCAA commissioner.
-Thayer Evans and a couple of other journalists seem to have pretty solid sources and a steady stream of new info.
-We (Auburn and Newton) seem to be getting slow played intentionally to damage us more. I am almost 100 percent certain we’ll have something waiting for tomorrow morning. Probably footage of Cam Newton shooting the last Tasmanian Tiger or something.

Really?? Am I missing something—and maybe I am, but since when are ‘unnamed sources’ from who knows where become ‘solid sources’. I don’t get it.

Sorry TOTM, haha. Just some wild speculation on my part. :)
But seriously, it seems there is a “honey hole” of info these journalists like Thayer Evans and Fuitak keep getting their info from. I can see all of the smear campaign stuff has being plausible, but I do not think for one minute that all of this shit is just being made up by writers. Evans, Fuitak, and others are talking to somebody. So that’s what I mean by “solid sources”.
War Eagle! Beat Georgia!

I get what you are saying.
I, too, do not believe that these journalists are not pulling stuff out of thin air. BUT, I do emphatically believe that they are not checking their sources and they will spin whatever info they may have into the most inflammatory characterization/explanation possible. Additionally, they are using half sentences as their most damning bits of evidence. This is supposed to be news, not fill in the blank for your own flippin’ scandal.
Remember when we were talked about football, and you would be all, boohooing the defense, and i would be all, ‘hey man it’s gonna be okay’??…Yeah, I miss it too.

True-- they are about as solid as you get.

Admit, I am late to this thread, but ...
… when the very first " solid source " is John Bond, who originally told ESPN that he was contacted by an agent; and then a few days later goes on an Atlanta radio station, changes his story to say there were two people between him and the agent – I’m sorry I can’t believe any of their so called " solid sources. "
Four people (from the agent to Bond’s reporting) is not a solid source. That’s gossip on Bond’s part and slander on the part of the news organization that reports it. And this hold mess of a firestorm is based on John Bond’s interview on ESPN.

So now...
Mississippi State is coming out and saying that they officially gave all of the information they had by July. If that is the case, then the idea that they are slowly presenting things is right on the money. You can bet that tomorrow something else will be all over the news again. Yet, these guys can always just go back and say, “That’s just the investigation we were publishing.” In that way, they are okay yet they can report what they want and that just isn’t right Damnit. Wow, I would love to say one of these guys one on one and ask them what exactly do they know and why are they presenting everything in the manner they are.
If the SEC office requests information about an investigation, can you really wait six months before you give it to them?
What kind of shit did MSU have to do from January to July that was more important?

Why do I feel like all this is to ensure that Cam goes to the NFL after this season?
I really am not willing to say he is innocent, but it seems like when he became very successful all this hit. And then to know he has one more year of eligibility….it seems like a possibility!
AU Athletic Compliance Department
Jay-
What do you hear about Auburn’s Athletic Compliance Department and their investigative work concerning all of these allegations? Should we be confident that they’ve done their due diligence and Auburn is in the clear? I’m hearing they are some tough hombres! Thanks.
I know that I am not Jay,
but in the article linked to above, it said that, in part, the compliance department poured over 1,000’s of phone records. Seems like if there was booster, agent, booster-Cam, what-have you types of conversations, they would have become evident there.
My understanding is that the compliance office has a seriously low tolerance for BS.

Rich McGlynn is as tough as they get...
He’s worked for the NCAA and also the FBI. I’ve heard some coaches say that at times they feel like he works against them, meaning he’s very strict in what’s tolerated. My worry is more about what the University may not know. That’s what keeps me up at night.
Thamel and Co
This isn’t the first time Pete Thamel and Company have gone after a college player. He recently went after the eligibility of Eric Bledsoe at Kentucky and right before Cam, he wrote an article about Enes Kanter at Kentucky. Both articles were dead wrong, he took quotes out of context, made up facts and plan out lied like a dog. He is an absolute joke and if his track record stays true and I know it will Cam and Auburn, will be just fine and hopefully the New York times can this piece of trash.

MSU Statement
I love how, just like the cheating allegation at Florida, it makes them look worse than it does anyone else.
Might be a lot of self preservation going on here
Perhaps some things turned up on their end after their initial report. More than they realized. Maybe MSU feels a compelling need to shape a story before it turns against them. Maybe. Who knows, but seems as plausible as what most are assuming.
The academic stuff was just bizarre. In the last 2 days, it’s become really clear that MSU is either highly PO’d or highly scared. The thing that scares me a bit is how willing the media seems to be to run with what they are getting from MSU right now. The thing that makes me feel better is that this was all supposedly turned over before Cam played a down and he’s still out there.
by Merry CRasmus on Nov 10, 2010 6:36 PM CST up reply actions
I still say I have to see some FACTS before I believe any of it.
There may be some evidence out there, but where is it? Where are these tapes? Who is accusing? Name the person. Define “Recruiter”? Coach or other and if it is other then that is an NCAA violation in and of itself but not against Auburn. Where are the phone records substantiating that any of these conversations took place? Where is the paper trail of money from Auburn to Cam/Cecil? Where is the money trail from Auburn that was used to repair the church? Where was the evidence from MSU for six months before it arrived at NCAA in July? Is it already at the NCAA office and if so why if it is so damning would the NCAA not go ahead and bench Cam? If it isnt at the NCAA office, who has it and why have they not turned it over?
I know a lot of people are nervous that the FBI is involved but frankly that makes me feel better. I will feel more comfortable if the FBI final report says this or that. I would feel that at least there was evidence behind accusations rather than these mysterious no name people who SAY this and that and supposedly have tapes, records etc etc that have not materialized. And if they materialize then we can take a look at them and see if they are legitamate.
Quit Defending and
let it go. This stuff came out of Tuscaloosa or bama boosters, no where else.
I wouldn’t put it past Saban himself, Auburn rising is not a good thing for any bama coach wanting to do good. The Bear didn’t like it, and Saban won’t like it now.
Take care of business, and let bama fan do their sleazy thing. It’s poison in their veins, not anyone else’s.
hard not to think about this
The whole thing is so bizarre. If I’m to assume that this story is not true, where did it come from? My mind immediately wanders to who might benefit from this sort of character assassination? I can’t come up with anything reasonable. My wildest thought was that ESPN had an agenda to get one of the non AQ schools in to the BCS game but that doesn’t really add up, does it? Someone has an agenda with this story and mainly ESPN is being used as their vehicle, that much is clear.
Since nothing adds up, its hard for me not to wonder what really was going on during Cam’s recruiting. Was this story just pulled out of the ether? Regardless, the NCAA will probably take years to complete any investigation. The whole Reggie Bush scandal wasn’t cleared up until just recently and they actually had evidence on that.
Jay, can we play the what if game?
What if Cam and/or Cecil are guilty of attempting to get money from MSU?
What if the claims are false on MSU behalf or they have no hard proof only verbal testimony? Instead of going into all the what if’s, give us a break down on the things that could happen. Give it to us from the worse case down.
Mind you, I want Chizik and Auburn cleared of all wrong doing. I’ll even accept a rogue alumni and the punishment that that entails. I just want to keep faith in Chizik and his staff and Jacobs to be doing the right things and for them standing up for one of their own (which we all need to do until otherwise notified by the burden of proof).
This is a smear campaign, plain and simple....
If you look at the time line, what has come out, and where it is coming from it all adds up to a 21st Century ploy to do several things.
- is to get Cam out of the SEC and into the NFL. There is no doubt in my mind at this point that he will forgo his senior season and move on to the next level after this season. What SEC team wouldn’t want to see him go?
- Auburn has ceased proactive recruiting and is in ‘stand our ground’ mode. We are currently trying to convince and comfort instead of moving forward on the rest of our class. Imagine what would happen in the battle grounds of SEC recruiting with a Nick Saban flagshipped Bama team recruiting harder than ever, and a National Championship Auburn led Gene Chizik squad picking who they choose with a Heisman winner and Crystal Trophy in hand. No one else in the SEC wants to see that.
- This has got to be some what of a distraction for every member of this year’s Auburn Tiger’s football team. From Head coach to walk on practice squad members, these guys are being berated with comments, questions, and accusations on a monumental level. This could turn out to back fire (and personnel I think it will with the team ‘all in’ attitude and overall togetherness that I have witnessed to this point). If it doesn’t it helps every other team in the SEC, including Miss St. and Florida (see above).
These 3 reasons alone are enough to launch a slanderous campaign on an individual with no prior indiscretions. If you attach it to an individual who happens to be the leading Heisman candidate on the only undefeated SEC team who has a previously admitted case of impropriety, you have all the ammunition that you need to get started.
If you want to start a smear campaign, there is no point in turning over your full hand of dirt at one time either. Especially if you have a plan, from multiple sources, that will convict the target in the easily swayed court of public opinion using a timed release of smut over the course of several days. Couple that with the use of multiple media outlets who are always hungry for a biting story, regardless of credibility. As a new age journalist, you have to love the sanctity of using an unnamed source and being able to allay suspicion using the auspice of the guarantee of a bigger story to follow. Obvously they have eaten it up.
Add to all of this that each story has fallen apart almost as fast as they have come out. Unfortunately, the disputing stories have not carried nearly as much weight as the ‘breaking news’ ones have.
So, I guess I am a homer. I’m an Auburn fan who is only looking at things from my side of the fence, right?
Well does someone have a NAMED source to answer a few of my editorial questions?
1) What happened to John Bond and his story change form talking directly to Kenny Rogers (reportedly) to multiple’ in-between’ guys?? Who are the two intermediaries that spoke with him about the initial offer of pay for play?
2) Speaking of Kenny Rogers, who is investigating his involvement in this? It has come to light that he, and his so called business, are defunct and facing bankruptcy. Has anyone looked into the possibility of him acting alone?
3) I realize that discussing an ongoing NCAA violation is a big no, no as far as they are concerned, so if there is a current investigation going which Mississippi State coaches leaked these allegations to the press? And why? What kind of penalty are they facing for doing so? I would also like to know if they have audio tapes of the ENTIRE conversations that these condemning stories take partial comments from. I can make an infinite amount of full sentences with the excerpts that were used to make what was allegedly said by the Newton’s totally innocent!
4) If the first story was true about Bond and Rogers, why on earth would the Newton’s have any contact with the coaching/recruiting staff of MSU about a pay for play? If they had a paid intermediary, it would make absolutely 0 (ZERO) sense to have any discussions regarding this with MSU coaches. If the first story wasn’t true, isn’t MSU in sever violation of slanderous, if not illegal, activity?
5) All of this has led to innuendos and allegations that Auburn MUST have paid Cam to attend our school. After all of this ‘information’ I have yet to hear that Auburn has ever been reported to have received an official letter of inquiry from the NCAA. Why is that? I get that the Newton’s were asked for banking information month’s ago, but Auburn has been slowly dragged into this by a media staircase of empty accusations in the past week.
6) Mississippi State’s coaches are the ones to have ‘leaked’ the latest info. Mullen was quoted as saying that only coaches are involved in recruiting for MSU, and individuals involved in recruiting for the school have reported the latest BS, yet when asked if Newton had his hand out, Mullen’s response is that ‘they have reported what they have had, to who they needed too.’ He doesn’t seem to want to be involved. Was he the one who leaked? If not, did he direct his staff to do so? If he didn’t who did? One day a leak comes from MSU, the next day it is from UF, yet both head coaches speak highly of Cameron Newton on a daily basis. Talk about lack of institutional control. It is one or the other, guys. Either you are behind him, or you are behind it all. It seems pretty simple now, doesn’t it?
I read this before I went to bed last night....
and woke up this morning thinking about it. You have many good points. I don’t know if I buy in to ‘the pushing Cam into the NFL’ point, but as of right now, who knows you could be right on the money.
It was just nice to come onto TET this morning and find Acid’s post and not some new horrible ‘revelation’ steeped in conjecture and shallow in facts.

Total outsider, here (Texas Tech guy). But from what I know about recruiting and compliance, Cam/Cecil, whomever, can ask for money all day long from MSU, Auburn, Clemson, et al. But unless money actually changes hands, no foul.
I actually have very little doubt SOMETHING happened along the way at MSU with his recruitment. These stories don’t just come out of thin air and we all know there is almost always some snippet of truth to the crazy recruiting stories that come out..That said, I do have a large doubt Auburn played along. The Newton’s can be accused of saying that AU offered more than MSU so he had to sign there, but if AU didn’t pay them off then no worries.
I honestly don’t think any money actually ever changed hands in this whole thing. But I also can’t totally discount that those conversations, or a version of them, took place at some point between Newton’s dad and MSU. I think it’s fairly common at every D-I school to varying degrees.
The timing of this is truly bizarre and I’m not sure what to make of MSU’s staff at this point. Sour grapes smell bad at any time of the year.
I think
you’re right on there, red raider. there’s something fishy somewhere, but there’s just no way Auburn was dumb enough to spend 200k+ on a guy who had never played a full SEC game, and furthermore could have broken his leg on the first day of practice…just crazy.

The matter is simple to prove
1- If the alleged money was paid using a check, then the matter is easy to track by checking his personal books as well as those of his church or any of the officers associated with the church. If the allegations are true, then we all know that no good deed ever goes unpunished.
2- If the alleged money was paid in cash, it would be more difficult to prove unless someone can prove that the contractors who renovated the church were paid in cash or if the Newtons went on a wild shopping spree or paid off debts, etc. This one may take a lot longer to investigate.
This is truly an upsetting situation, considering that Auburn is a favorite in my opinion to win the NC with Newton being a favorite to win the Heisman. What is more upsetting is that schools like Miss ST and Florida may have started or contributed to this fire that could burn a fellow team within the same conference.
A cash payment of $200k, if true, could probably trigger major penalties including the death penalty.
