Bulldogs Are Fighting for a Bowl Trip.

Bad_moon_rising_medium

There's a bad moon rising over Jordan Hare Stadium.

War Eagle, everybody. It's another day in November, so I suppose there will be another debunking of the previous day's Cam Newton rumor, and a fresh new one for today. I'm tired of it. If the ESPN Radio guys ever wanted to figure out how to drive listeners back to their CD and MP3 players, this is it. "Recruiters?" "Two or three guys?" "Cheating Scandal that wasn't?" "Witch Hunt" is an appropriate term. The usual media faves Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and Alabama are out of the BCS title chase, so let's print every message board rumor we hear, and attribute it to vague sources. It's disgusting.

Hopefully the Auburn football team can take their frustrations out on the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday. I'm fully expecting to see a ragged game, as it will be the 11th in a row with no off-weeks for both teams. Last season in Athens, fatigue got to the Tigers as they committed 9 penalties in a sloppy game, and were beaten back at the point of attack as the contest went on. The thing that most concerns me is that many of the principal players from last season on the lines return for both teams. After the first quarter in Athens last year, the Bulldogs dominated the line of scrimmage. The much-maligned Georgia D was able to hold the Auburn offense to just one field goal drive in three quarters, although much of that had to do with Tiger mistakes on the offensive side. The Georgia offense cranked out first downs on the ground and kept the ball away from Auburn. When the Tigers made mistakes, the UGA offense turned those into points.

Defensively, I'm hoping for a better result up front this year. By game 11 last season, Jake Ricks and Mike Blanc were playing nearly every snap at tackle. Ricks is gone this year, and Blanc has some considerable help. We're fielding a solid two-deep at both tackle spots, and this year's Nick Fairley and Zack Clayton are a big upgrade over anything we had on the line last season. Linebacker depth also played a role last season. Eltoro Freeman was hurt early against Georgia, and Auburn really didn't have an SEC-level replacement ready. Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens had played nearly every meaningful snap of the season, and were dog-tired. This year, there has been a rotation at every linebacker position, and Auburn is as healthy has they've been all year going into the game. Starter Darren Bates will be back, and we've got Freeman, Evans and Holland all ready to give quality rests to the starters.

Special teams will be a huge challenge for the Tigers in this one. Georgia has probably the best kicking tandem in the league, with Blair Walsh kicking, and Drew Butler punting. Walsh has hit 17 of 20 field goal attempts, and he's belting high kickoffs deep to the four yard line on average. Butler is averaging 45.2 yards per punt, and Georgia's only giving up 4.4 yards per return. Opponents have only managed to return 11 of Butler's 41 punts. Georgia is comparable to Auburn in kick coverage, giving up 20.1 yards per return. Kick returner Brandon Boykin sports a good 28.6 yard average. Punt returner Brandon Smith is averaging 16.1 yards per return. These return numbers are particularly impressive, because neither returner has a touchdown to skew the average.

As with every opponent Auburn has faced this season, the Tigers should move the ball. Georgia is pretty quick on defense, but I don't think they have any linemen who are going to force a double team block. The glory usually goes to the ball-carrier, but if anything has defined this Tiger offense, it's an ability to get hats on defenders. Auburn's schemes often end up with a pulling guard matched up on a linebacker or safety, and the defender ends up on the ground. It's incumbent on the Tigers to avoid turnovers and penalties. Last season, Georgia stopped the inside running game, and dared Auburn to be patient with the short outside game. Auburn could not sustain scoring drives that way, and lost by a touchdown.

This year's Auburn offense is significantly different from last year's. Obviously, Cameron Newton is an upgrade at quarterback with his arm and powerful running style. While the loss of Ben Tate could have been huge, Auburn has been able to replace him by committee. The Auburn offensive line had some shaky times early in the season, particularly against Mississippi State and Clemson. However, those problems have been fixed. Brandon Moseley has really come along this season, and he's now playing at the same level that Auburn's four other senior starters are. Support blocking has been there too, from Eric Smith, Kodi Burns and Phillip Lutzenkirchen. Don't forget the Auburn wide receivers. Retired defensive wizard Bill Oliver called them "the blockingest receivers I've ever seen!" There's really no weakness up front. Last year, when Auburn ran, you just had to worry about Ben Tate. This year, you've often got two dangerous backs and the quarterback all moving in different directions at the snap. Newton, Dyer and McCalebb are all breaking long runs consistently. In the passing game, last year's key was to stop Darvin Adams. This year, Auburn's got three receivers on the field that can break it: Adams, Terrell Zachary, and Emory Blake. My hope is that this unit keeps doing what they do, and doesn't play distracted ball.

Comparing the two teams' schedules, a few things have become apparent. Obviously, both teams have improved by leaps and bounds over the course of the year. It could be argued that Auburn got two or three lucky wins in the first half of the season (MSU, Clemson, South Carolina) and Georgia was a few breaks away in early losses. As to non-conference games, both played a BCS opponent, then Auburn had three cupcakes, and Georgia two. Is Clemson at Auburn a more difficult matchup than Colorado on the road? I'm going to call that a push. The Buffs weren't as bad early in the season, and that's a long trip. Where things get interesting is looking at opponents that both teams have played. The only common SEC opponent Georgia has won against was Kentucky, whom Georgia beat by 11 in Lexington, compared to Auburn's 3 point win. Georgia lost to South Carolina in Columbia, Arkansas in Athens, and Mississippi State in Starkville, all teams Auburn beat. Aside from those 4 games in common, Auburn has beaten LSU and Ole Miss, while Georgia has beaten Tennessee and Vanderbilt, and lost to Florida. Conventional wisdom says that Auburn should win this game, but this series is notorious for upsets, ESPECIALLY on the loser's home field. I take nothing for granted in this one!

War Eagle! Let's beat the Bulldogs and win the SEC West! We'll have the usual open thread up Saturday morning, and we'll be here celebrating our Tigers!

This is going to be weird/funny analogy to some but here goes:

I see this game against UGA and this team as Dog in a bathtub.

By that I mean, that if we do all of the right things we will be fine. Much anyone can give a dog a bath. BUT (because there always is one) if you turn your back on the dog or get distracted, the dog is out of the bathtub and in your house making a mess of everything you planned. Stay on task! Stay Focused! Don’t let the dog out of the bathtub until YOU are ready for it to be out! I always knew I should be a philosophy major.

just not in regards to a football game.

The difference makers...

we have playing on offense this year that weren’t starting for us last year are as follows: Cam Newton, Mike Dyer, Emory Blake, and Phillip Lutzenkirchen. I think that these guys give us a much more potent and balanced offense than we had last year. My concern is going up against a 3-4 defense. Lots of confusing blitzing packages you can run out of the 3-4. Have we faced a 3-4 defense at all this year?

Also…have to agree with you that a big difference on defense this year as opposed to last year (aside from Fairley’s dominance) is the fact that our guys are more rested because of the rotation that Ted Roof has had going, Bynes, Stevens, Bates, Freeman, Evans, and Holland have all played significant time at Linebacker, while Eguae, Fairley, Clayton, A. Carter, Blanc, Lemmonnier, Ford, and K. Carter have all played a significant amount of time on the D-line. Even though they haven’t played great our secondary is much deeper with Thorpe, Washington, Etheridge, McNeil, Bell, and Davis (not going to count R. White, D. McNeal, or I. Means since they aren’t significant contributors).

To finish my point…last year as we can all remember we got off to a great start in the first quarter (ready to roll Toomers Corner) and then we pooped out for the final 3 quarters. This year our depth and chemistry should enable us to come away with the victory. Oh yeah…and don’t forget that there are numerous seniors who want to remember their last game in Jordan-Hare as a win! All we can do is hope that the team is not distracted by the Cam Newton “Witch Hunt” and they come out looking to clinch the SEC West. We shall see on Saturday! WAR EAGLE!!!

by aubiebattle on Nov 11, 2010 5:38 AM CST reply actions

I don't really worry about the 3-4 because they don't have the personnel to be really effective with it

They lack the massive nose tackle in the middle of the line like Terrence Cody. We should be able to get to the next level on almost all of our running plays on Saturday.

all this bs with Cam and the media results in a ticked off team ready to take their frustrations out. I would really like to see 50+ plus points in this game.

Ah, reading this is like a warm cup of chicken noodle soup after walking home in a cold rain!

I am so excited for the game on Saturday!! I am excited to see how these Tigers handle a talented Georgia ball club. While I am a little concerned that Murray is going to light up our secondary, I think that the pressure from Fairley and Co. will dampen this threat a bit. Because of the fatigue from this week’s sordid revelations and leaping conjectures, I am expecting a slow start. I do expect everyone to Cam down by the 2nd quarter and get down to business. It’s Georgia week—let’s start to enjoy it!

As always, much respect Acid, thanks for an awesome read!

The good news is that we got through the SLOW part of the news cycle week

Now they have plenty of stories to run for the remainder of the week. This is all about generating viewership and readership. Sure there is a story there but they really want to run with it when there isn’t a slate of games to cover.
Trust me, there won’t be any NEW allegation until next monday or Tuesday. They will continue to beat the allegations to death though.

This is their problem

They can’t really go all in without incriminating themselves. You can’t get to a dollar figure in a conversation unless you are talking cash in the 1st place…..I’m in sales and if you want the sale, at some point you have to ask for the order. Recruiting is sales….capece?

So MSU, are you willing to go down on the off chance their can be ties found to Auburn?? I personally think they got played. Cecil wanted Cam to go to Auburn and MSU got desperate when he de-committed and started talking about things they shouln’t have been talking about. What happened after that is anybody’s guess but I don’t think they took kindly to getting romanced and tossed aside like a one night stand. Lust makes you do stupid things and I think MSU had it for Cam….hard. Its natural for them to be spiteful after getting left for a rival. I’d be pissed too.

Funny how nobody else recruiting Cam had a problem with Cecil or the recruiting process.

"Funny how nobody else recruiting Cam had a problem with Cecil or the recruiting process."

Unless they all offered money to the Newtons and now they’re covering their asses.

One thing I don’t get, is if Cam Newton came to Auburn because we paid more than Miss. St. was willing to pay, why would Cam call them after committing to Auburn and tell them that he took more money and went to Auburn? That doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Do you remember that spelling bee you won in the first grade? Rock? "R-O-K"?

by jd is legend on Nov 11, 2010 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

That was kind of my point....

either everybody was in or nobody was in….except for MSU.
I kind of have a hard time believing that the only folks involved were MSU people and are the only one torqued about it. If there was ANYBODY involved that wasn’t connected to MSU, I would be a more concerned but it looks to me like they are throwing this out there to get the NCAA sniffing around Auburn in hopes that they can gig them on something. I don’t believe for a second that they have any evidence that will stick….that would also not incriminate them or lead an investigation back to MSU. For that reason alone I think this will ultimately may cost Cam the Heisman but will come to nothing for Auburn.

How do you

know no one else had that problem. Maybe they just arent saying anything….besides there werent that many schools that wanted him.

by Jasands50 on Nov 12, 2010 6:33 PM CST up reply actions

Kiffin came out today, saying that while they did not pursue Cam seriously enough,

that there was nothing unusual in his recruitment.

Everyone should be asking what could have happened to the ‘evidence’ in the 6 or 7 months it took MSU to turn it over….and they never turned over the conversations, right? I think this stinks more of MSU not cleaning up their own garbage vs Cam or Auburn doing anything untoward.

by Tiger on the mountain on Nov 11, 2010 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

We should be able to run ALL day long on them.

What makes the running attack work so well is that they are keying on Cam and its the split second they take to make sure he doesn’t have the ball that opens things up for Run OMC and Dyer. Georgia also doesn’t have a run stopper in the middle and in the 3-4 you have to have that to occuppy the guards. Mike Berry should have a field day blowing up LB’S and safeties.
If they key on Cam, like Ole Miss, as I suspect they will, Cam should have Blake, TZac and Adams open all day. If they thrown some to Lutz a little more, we shouldn’t even have to punt. We haven’t really done anything fancy in a while….we’re just executing at a high level. If we keep that up, all we should have to worry about is turning the ball over.

On defense the key will be stopping the run and putting Murray in long yardage throwing situations. Murray is very good and he will get his, but if we keep the pressure on them to score, he will make mistakes and turn the ball over. Ealey and King can be very effective runners and will make this game interesting if they get going early and can take the pressure of Murray. But we have done a good job of shutting down the running game this year and people overlook that because of our porous pass defense. I suspect we bottle up those guys and force Murray to carry the load. Fairley will be trying to make a late season impression to lock up the Lombardi so look for us to try some delayed blitzes to get the double team off him and get him loose. Unless Georgia’s line play have improved measurabley, Murray will find Ol’ St Nick in his jersey most of the afternoon.

Special Teams shouldn’t come much into play…. I think we really role this week. 56-17. Really.

Col. I think you are right on with the offense.

Malzahn will, as always, have to call a great game. I am confident he will, with UGA (or any team for that matter) compensating for Cam there will opportunities ripe for the plucking on almost every down of every drive. We just have to be focused enough to get the right play in and execute it and the offense will be just fine.

The defense is a different story. They will be challenged again this week with one of, if not the best, SEC receivers. They will have to rise up.

I tell you what....

I haven’t been worried about losing a game since the Clemson game. Once Gus took the reigns off Cam, I realized as long as we had the ball last we were going to win.
The events of this week cause me to worry about us not being focused on the playbook and game preparation but the kids are only human, so we have to hope for the best.

I do know this…I have played on lousy teams and championship teams and the teams that won championships would have rather walked through fire in Kerosene jumpsuits than let anyone beat them. The lousy teams were just looking for the first sign of defeat to pack up and go through the motions. If we can get up on Georgia by a couple of scores early, they’ll know they are beat and quit…..guaranteed.

I think AU will vent a lot of frustrations in this game. AU will take the field and execute. The crowd will be louder than usual. This game isn’t about just the UGA rivalry this week. It’s going to be about the AU football team asserting itself that it will not be distracted or intimidated about the off-field B.S accusations. The fans are going to respond in kind and be very very loud. It’s not going to be a football game, it’s going to be a reconing.

by AuburnMisfit on Nov 11, 2010 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

UGA plays a 1-gap 3-4

Ratliffe, a well-loved guy around here, was Grantham’s NT at Dallas, and his job was to take one gap, not two like most NTs in 3-4 systems. The NT does lots of stunts with the ends in zone blitz backages.

The system isn’t built on having a Cody in the middle and is more based on reaction – kinda like Auburn’s offense. It’s designed to stop the spread and the option by making the offense show the play before the LBs get blocked. There’s a reason Justin Houston leads the league in sacks.

I don’t expect a spy on Newton. We’ll see.

Any Veterans out there today?

If so, thank you for your service. Oh, and the paid holiday!!

It’s great to be talking about Auburn football. This smear campaign has gotten way too much press. Pretty soon, they’ll be saying Cam is the love child of Magic Johnson (check out that grin!) It’s ridiculous. I predict a lot of yards for this one.

In Cam’s interview the other day, he was aked about the 3-4 and his response could have been purposefully vague, but it didn’t sound like he had studied it much. I’m not reading into that (if you want to see the interview it was on Auburn Athletics webpage) but the whole thing seemed to be mentally taxing on him. I hope he finds a haven on the football field and we clear all doubt about our place in the SEC.

Just to update everyone:

Kenny Rogers just spoke with ESPN Dallas radio and outlined the entire incident of Cecil Newton asking for money from the MSU coaches. Claimed it happened the night before the Ole Miss game last year (November) and that the number discussed was between 100k-180k. The radio hosts were also trying to get Rogers to imply Auburn must have paid Cam but he repeadetly denied any contact or knowledge that Auburn did anything wrong.

Now I know that this isn’t proof 100% of anything yet. But I am seriously second guessing myself at this point. How serious does it have to get before we all have to take a step back and think, wow AU may have really messed up.

Kenny Rogers?--the same guy that last week stated that there was never a conversation about $$ for Cam's allegiance?

That Kenny Rogers? Also the same ESPN Dallas that was reporting yesterday that Cam was not going to be eligible to play this Saturday? Even if this alleged conversation happened, unless there is a tape, it is hearsay. Of course at this point, MSU is going to pull out boosters and whomever else the get the attention off of them and back on Auburn.

What are we supposed to believe? And why suddenly believe a guy who has an allegiance to MSU, not Auburn, who is going bankrupt, and oh yeah, definitely does not have a solid reputation??

Just playing devil’s advocate, but I will do some searching and report back……

Don't get caught up it in!

The SEC and the NCAA have had all of the Newton’s financial records since January. If there was something to find it would have already been found. These reactions are why the media takes hear say and publishes it. Hell Kenny Rodgers could have been paid to make these claims.

Whatever happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty?

Here's a link....

to the Newest Big Story

I guess it boils down to who you put more stock into, a flip flopping Kenny Rogers or into the Newtons and Auburn. At this point, I can tell you 100% that I am with Cam and Auburn being OK.

by Tiger on the mountain on Nov 11, 2010 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

Two minor quibbles:

Brandon Boykin actually does have a return for a touchdown this year…he had a 100 yarder against Kentucky. I’ll be interested to see how Auburn approaches him. Most teams have avoided kicking to him, as he’s a threat to take it to the house anytime he touches the ball.

As for the line not having anyone that warrants a double-team, I think you’re half-right. Justin Houston, probably our best defensive player, is definitely going to demand a double-team atleast a portion of the time. Technically, he’s an outside linebacker and isn’t on the line, however, he spend atleast half the time with his hand in the dirt coming off the end, so it’s a tricky situation. He leads the SEC in sacks, so I’m hoping he can get to Cam a time or two, but that’s a tall order for anyone.

I think Georgia will do a good job stopping the run, but I’m not so sure about stopping Cam. Georgia’s run defense (if my memory serves me correctly) is a top 15 defense in the country and second in the conference behind South Carolina. They do, however, struggle with running quarterbacks, so that’s a big thing to watch. Personally, I would like to spy our surest tackler (Christian Robinson) on Newton, but we’ll see if that happens.

Last, I would like to see Georgia go out to an early lead, as we’re 5-0 when we score first and 0-5 when we don’t, but if that doesn’t happen, I don’t think the Dawgs will just lay down and die if they go down early. They’ve been down early in more than one game this year and have come back to tie the game up twice, only to fall short in the closing minute or in overtime. While Auburn’s offense is better than both of those teams (Arkansas and Florida), the point is that this team doesn’t quit or give up. They know they can score points, and Auburn’s defense isn’t exactly the best.

On paper, Auburn should win the game, but this series is so crazy that anything could happen. The intangibles, and how the teams react to them, will end up making the difference. If Auburn’s #1 intangible (Cam) has a big day, then Auburn probably wins. If Georgia’s intangibles (winning four in a row in the series, six of the last nine at Jordan-Hare, the Camgate controversy) are too much for Auburn, then Georgia could squeak out a win. Either way, I’m looking forward to what should be a good game and here’s to all the players remaining healthy. Go Dawgs!
