The Dirtiest Play in the History of College Football

You've all heard it by now.  Bama fans are taking up the mantra from UGA fans.  Your co-workers are saying it.  Your friends are saying it.  If you're very unlucky, your family is saying it.  Heck, even random strangers who see your Auburn shirt are stopping you to tell you that Auburn is dirty.

Earlier today a Facebook "friend", who happens to be a bama fan, posted a photo from Auburn's 1972 season.  The photo, with the superimposed caption, "Auburn Tigers - Redefining the phrase 'unsportsmanlike conduct' since 1972 - WAR DROPKICK!", shows David Langner leaping in the air with the apparent intent to deliver a drop kick to an opposing player.

I'm not here to debate whether or not Langner actually turned ninja in an attempt to injure another player (actually it looks to me like he's trying to block a punt).  I'm here to remind bama fans that the dirtiest play in the history of college football occurred when Tommy Lewis decided to take matters into his own hands during the 1954 Cotton Bowl.

The next time a bama fan tries to tell you that Nick Fairley is the dirtiest player ever, or that Auburn is the dirtiest program ever, please refer him/her to this.

one of the more bizarre clips of Alabama football

Thanks for reminding me of this!!

I’d actually forgotten about that!!! Definitely one of the best “WTF” moments I can remember in college football!! Priceless!!

I'm not sure about dirty, but it sure was dumb

The refs gave the guy a touchdown, but it appeared that there was an Alabama guy with an angle that could have stopped him.

Do you remember that spelling bee you won in the first grade? Rock? "R-O-K"?

good catch

I didn’t notice that the first time I saw it.

I love it....

I said in a post earlier this season that to be a winner, you have to be confident in your ability to do the job and not afraid to kick some ass. If you want to dominate and win, you have to embrace being the favorite and the good and bad that comes with the limelight.
If you’re winning some people will HATE you and everything you do, especially if you do it in dominating fashion.

You know what? We are shaking up college football and the establishment CAN"T STAND IT. The Auburn family stands for things that they don’t, like conservative family values. We have the best players in football on offense AND defense…and they can’t stand it. They can’t pin anything on Cam, because theres no evidence of wrongdoing, even though they keep talking and talking and talking and talking….and they can’t stand that their sanctimonious drivel can’t be proven….so now they are taking their fraustration out on Nick. Well good luck guys, Nick is tougher than any of you people in the media ever thought of being…..and I mean mentally tough. He knows what real hard times are, and facing some chop blockers from UGA aint nothing….just gives him more motivation to plant QB’s in the turf. And hes got a bumper crop growing.

I love it that we are driving them crazy…..and I can’t wait until Cam is exonerated and we win the National Title. What do you bet when that happens they will fall all over themselves telling Cam how great he is….. just gross.

I think you could have made your point without bringing conservative/liberal into it

It doesn't get more conservative than "The Creed"...

and we use it in every TV spot for the univiersity. And most people associated with Auburn cite the creed as what makes them proud of Auburn.

I call a spade a spade…..not trying to be political it just the truth….if that offends folks….sorry, you should be a little more confident in your belief system.

Oh, for crying out loud!

Col., sometimes I want to hug you; sometimes I want to smack you (in case you need a barometer, I feelin’ the latter, right now). I have been hearing the Creed in my very liberal household since the age of 2. I have never associated the Creed with conservatism or liberalism..it just stands for being a good person (to paraphrase and simplify the matter)—which should be everyone’s happy little goal, regardless of your politics!!!!!! Good gracious!

Can’t wait til Todd92 gets a hold of your ass…….

I believe that the Auburn Creed transcends political beliefs

People of all backgrounds — political or otherwise — can find value in its message.

We just had an election in Alabama.

…..And I think nearly every political spot I heard, regardless of party had the line “conservative family values in it,” when talking about the candidate. Either that, or it was a slam job on the other candidate…

It is a shame that liberal has been used like a dirty word and only "Conservative"...

is to be seen as American…..it reeks of McCarthyism to my nostrils.

Is cunnilingus....er....I mean Col. Angus....

a conservative family value? lol….that’s rich…and yes you should remember that not all auburn fans and alumni are conservative in nature….namely me.

The Auburn family stands for things that they don’t, like conservative family values.

Where, exactly, did you come up with the idea that the ‘college football establishment’ holds some sort on ‘non-conservative’ viewpoint? WTF are you even talking about?

We are shaking up college football and the establishment CAN"T STAND IT.

What, exactly, is Auburn doing to ‘shake up the college football establishment?’ They’re doing well, congrats. Is that supposed to turn the ‘establishment’ on its head? Because Auburn, a traditional SEC powerhouse is in national championship contention? Whoa…groundbreaking sh*t there….who would have thought.

Be an Auburn fan, great. Fine. But Quit with the ’it’s a conspiracy’ everyone’s against us crap. Cause that’s what it is. CRAP.

(Just an unbiased college football fan here, I check this blog occasionally to see what you guys are saying about the cam Newton issue and get your takes on it—-but this guy Col. Angus, apparently, is a bit of a douche so I had to say something) .

SB Nation PROTIPS:
1. The refs are always out to screw YOUR team. It's a conspiracy.
2. The play-by-play guys are CLEARLY rooting for the other team.
3.The other team is NEVER responsible for your team playing poorly.
4. YOUR players and fanbase clearly have more "class."

Something you may not understand about Auburn or Alabama....

and that is that a certain amount of justifiable paranoia exist with both schools…..in fact you can go ahead and apply that to most if not all Traditional SEC powerhouses……and it is justifiable because each schools fanbase would rat out, set up, entrap or otherwise disgrace the opponents program in a New York minute. It is unfortunate but true and has happened numerous times throughout the history of the SEC. And when he says the establishment he is referring to the few programs that think it is their birthright to contend for titles(cough cough bama cough) and it is eating Bama alive that AU is the dominant SEC team at the moment (that part I really like)………I personally don’t agree with the whole “conservative family values” statement either as you may have guessed. And I don’t think Cunnil…er Col. Angus is a douchebag but he is a little overzealous sometimes as we all are.

I know that you are just a visitor, but

I have to say that the Col. is not a douche. He can get a little wonky mixing ‘conservative family values’ with football talk. But for the most part, this is a Family at TET, so we still invite the crazy uncle (Col.) over for Thanksgiving—never knowing what he is really going to say, but honestly, happy that we are all here together. Dig?

Mehhh

Now i wont argue that that was a F*cked up thing to do… I think the main argument is though that Nick is hurting these people with some pretty bad hits… Im not arguing against Nick OR for Nick… I am just saying i dont think its so much of a sneaky play that costs a touchdown… but more of a this is hurting someone. Thats my thought on it at least

The video though cracked me up lol i mean seriously !! Its a shame to say he came from Bama.

Good Luck Auburn folk… RTR friends !

Let me ask you a question.....

is Nick Fairly’s late hit dirtier than the Eye Gouging done by the UF player last year? I mean it seems to me that there is the possibility that Fairly took his eyes off of Murray long enough to not see that he had released the ball but it doesn’t seem possible that the UF dude Brandon something or other couldn’t miss the fact that he was jamming his fingers into the other dudes facemask……just curious.

Also the pile driving is not dirty and is intended to hurt the opponent....

now mind you there is a difference between hurting and injuring a player……knocking the snot out of a player and sending him to the sideline for a few plays or even the rest of the game is not like trying to injure a player…..meaning do serious long term harm. I think you would have a hard time finding another hit by Fairly that you could seriously say he was trying to “injure” a player……I will say the same thing about Glenn Dorsey, he was the master of the pile drive and I don’t remember any of this hub bub about him other than he was a beast. One play does not make one dirty……..although I will admit it was a late hit and he should have kept his head up….but having been in that position many many moons ago when you are about to collide it is natural to put your head down.

That eye gouge

PISSED ME OFF !!!! That was horrible horrible sporstmanship ! I mean he was most definitely trying to actively hurt someone. You are right there completely.
As I said I’m not agreeing or disgareeing with the Fairly critics, I’m just offering some other point of view than the typical hes a horrible person blah blah blah crap that comes from someone who is talking out of their @ss. Those were the same folks saying crap last year about Dareus and Colt but whatever. Personally i think it was a crappy hit.. but again football is a high octane game and sometimes the pump is gonna cloud the thought process a bit and make it harder to distinguish when the play is over. The hit to Aarons knee was a huge exaggeration ( as far as people saying he did that on purpose…. not a chance ) and should never have gone further than it did with all the drama to follow.

Now with all that said ….. allow this compliment; As a Bama fan- Fairley scares the HELL out of me ! Can we please get Trent Richardson to block for him lol we need a beast to block a beast !

heres hoping this doesnt post 8 times again :)

by lastmilefire on Nov 17, 2010 11:09 PM CST reply actions

I agree pretty much with everything you just said....

it was a crappy his and was rightfully flagged as such but its not like Fairly is some sort of future Angola prison candidate because of it……the heat of battle can sometimes make us go one step too far and thats what that little yellow flag is for. But the villification that UGA and alot of Bama fans are trying to pump up on Fairly and the AU family is a bit absurd.
