The Biggest Iron Bowl of All
I've always thought Heaven is a lot like Iron Bowl week. When you think about it, life doesn't get much better than the next five days. In the course of 120 hours most of us will get an extended weekend, spend time with the people we love most (hopefully), eat enormous amounts of food and come together as a state to watch the greatest rivalry in college football.
How do you top that?
One thing is certain; every Iron Bowl week has its own feel. For Auburn players, coaches and fans, this year's edition is the biggest in 53 years. Never in Auburn's history has a national title and a Heisman Trophy hung in the balance over Thanksgiving weekend.
A year ago the same exact stakes were on the line for Alabama. That's enough to explain why this game is the greatest of all. Thinking about all that's up for grabs, well, it's enough to make you throw up your Thanksgiving leftovers.
So here we go. Who knows what stories will emerge in the coming days. Will the NCAA weigh in on Cam Newton? Will another unnamed source rear its ugly head? Rumors have always been part of the Iron Bowl. Expect the same this time around.
As predicted, many are jumping off the Auburn bandwagon ahead of Friday. ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit, who's been with Auburn since August, jumped ship Saturday and there will likely be more as the week progresses.
Lou Holtz made a fool of himself yesterday, throwing an Auburn helmet to the ground during a show taping, while he continued his character assassination on Newton. Like we've talked before, people love to build up their heroes and then tear them down.
Never underestimate the Alabama public relations machine. Few do it better. By early Friday morning, many of the state's media will have you wondering how Auburn can stay on the field with the twice beaten Crimson Tide.
In the end, all of this is nothing more than chatter to the players. Both teams will eat Thanksgiving together. Both will lockdown Thursday evening and turn their attention toward each other more than anything else. It's been a long grueling season for both programs. Unlike the fans, both coaches and players have an enormous amount of respect for the other.
Many like to paint the Iron Bowl as good ole fashion hate between two state programs. Noted college football writer Tony Barnhart said yesterday that the game is a "cultural war" where football is used to, "fight it out."
I couldn't disagree more. Neither side likes to admit it, but Auburn and Alabama fans are more alike than different. We work together, live next to each other and even marry into one another's families.
The whole state school vs. land grant institution talk may have meant something 40 years ago. Today, the two universities are much more alike than different.
Many will say this year's contest means more to Auburn. Don't believe it. Alabama is the defending national champions. The last thing they want is for Auburn to steal their thunder and take their pride.
Tuscaloosa will be crazy Friday afternoon. Don't forget the feeling you had when Auburn knocked off undefeated and second-ranked Alabama in 1989. Alabama fans won't have the emotions of "The First Time Ever;" but make no mistake, they want this one every bit as much as Auburn.
As an Auburn person, I hope you look forward to Friday. It's a day to celebrate, not dread. Auburn has the better team. It has Cam Newton. It has the world against them.
And Gene Chizik's team would have it no other way.

I don't dread it!
…..You saw how I was two years ago. I want to see the glory of it, even if it means a 36-0 beatdown of us! Don’t thing that’s going to happen, this year! We’re on a roll. We’re cool. We’ve got each others’ back. And we’ve got a MONSTER QB!
……Bama, beat us if you can. Me, I’m thinking Cotton-pickin’ for you. We’ll be in Glendale, LSU will get the Sugar, Arkansas will get the Cap One, and Sakerlina will get the Outback. Bama will have to go West.
ESPN Classic had an Iron Bowl marathon yesterday and I wathced about 12 hours of Auburn-Alabama games. It was a blast seeing Bo Jackson and the incredible 2003-2004 Tigers. That was my favorite team for a long time. But The current line up is also very dear to my heart. I really like these guys as people. I like the team chemistry.
I have great expectations for this year’s game after seeing what Auburn did last year with a paper thin defense and the offensive weapons at our disposal. The guys stayed ahead of an Alabama team that was stronger on both sides of the ball last year than they are this year .
We have more guys to carry the defensive load this year, plus we have Fairly, Clayton and AC on the line. Josh Bynes is a terrific defensive leader. The secondary starts out funky but gets stronger as the game progresses. There is much for which to be hopeful right there.
Our guys stopped Ingram last year. This year they stopped Lattimore. There is no reason to think Alabama will be able to run between the tackles this year against our stout run defense. Saban (aka Spanky, thanks to Boris1) isn’t going to like that.
And then we come to a much improved offense over last year’s edition. Accolades fail to do justice to this squad. But they have broken all the records. The combination of Dyer and McCalebb has replaced last year’s running back with a powerful team that confuses defenses and makes defending against our dual threat that much more difficult. There has been absolutely no drop off in production there.
Cam Newton is a very good passer and and excellent runner. Todd was inconsistent over the course of the season last year. But when he was on, they guy made throws and also had a good ability to manage the offense, as seen by his record numbers. But this year, Cam Newton has so far not had a bad game. And he is smashing the records.
We have so many available receivers from which to choose that defenses cannot key on any one guy. Defensive coordinators have yet to find an effective solution to their problem. If they try to stop the run, we pass and make touchdowns.
Well, I am rambling now. So let’s just say, we will win this game and the nation will be surprised at how strong these guys are. In the minds of many, as Jay mentioned, they cling to old notions about last year’s champs and have never given this year’s Tigers the respect they deserve. It will take winning the Iron Bowl to convince them what we already know. This team is special and for real.
In rebuttal....
I feel I was very consistant last year. :-)
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Certainly an event anticipated...
In my house. Friends, family, a good time is had by all.
This year we are the hunted, although we are not prey. Top of the line carnivore is what this team is.
WAR EAGLE!

Unfortunately,
due to family obligations (in-laws monumental wedding anniversary), I will have to find an establishment somewhere in the Detroit area from which I can watch the game.

The more the naysayers yammer on, the more this team comes together to kick some ass. It was disappointing to see Herbie jump ship on Sat, but also not surprising. Sideline reporter Holly Rowe accused Cam, himself, of seeking money from MSU, when there has been NOTHING to even suggest that was the case. ESPN is prideful and will keep lashing out at Auburn and Cam because it smacks the appearance of being right and justified in their reports. As fans we worry about this crap. Happily, the Tiger players, the ones that matter the most, are only seeing Crimson and boy are they hungry!!!

again just an observation.

And in developing news....Nazis are a-holes!!!
What?? Nobody on the Auburn bandwagon? To be quite honest….I’m shocked.
This has to be the first time this year that ESPN and the media in general has doubted our Tigers. Sure they weren’t totally sold going to Stakville, but remeber all the love we got going into the South Carolina game off the Clemson win Then there was the exuberant confindence when we went to Lexington. Then it was, how could we lose to Arkansas?? Then of course, it was the manic expectation of an LSU beatdown and a cakewalk against Ole Miss. Lastly, unbridled snickering at the prospect of a loss to UGA. So I guess I’m a little taken aback that the optimism isn’t really there for the Alabama tilt, especially since it was a forgone conclusion all year that we would win in Tuscaloosa.
I gotta say….I’m really disappointed. But hey, at least they are supportive of Cam Newton, right??

Seriously though....if you look at the statistics....we're toast.
But thats why you can’t break your bookie from the results of the simulation you got after you plugged all the stats into your Commodore 64….FORTRAN STYLE!!
Yes, I’m old.
Yeah, if you pour over the stats, we don’t measure up. If you look at our play on the road, you shudder a little bit. But thats why they play the games. Stats DO NOT tell the tale of this football team. 1st off, they have gotten better every week and the defense, while extremely porous at times, actually has improved a lot and goes trhough stretches of games where they are VERY stingy….especially late in games. Most of that has to do with opposing offenses pressing while trying to keep up with us, but the defense still has to be in position and they still have to perform.
I laugh when the analysts look back at the MSU, Clemson and South Carolina games as evidence of how to stop our offense. Those games might as well have been last year for as much bearing as they have on how we play now. Mario Fannin was the primary back……shudder…..and we BARELY used Cam’s running attack in the MSU and Clemson games. South Carolina was the coming out party and even then it was obvious that Malzahn wasn’t really sure how to use Cam at that point. Like any weapon, if you don’t know how to use it, you can be ineffective and clumsy when using it at first but eventually it can become very dangerous when utilized appropriately.
We are now utilizing Cam appropriately……on a team level. Cam has an impact on both offensive and defensive play because he puts pressure on the other team to score. The closer it gets to the end of the game….the tighter the vice is on the opposing offense.
Do I think we will shut Alabama down? No, they will get their points, but I don’t think their offense is as good as Georgia’s so I don’t think they will get 30+ either. What I think is funny is that, after what we did to LSU’s defense, the clarion call is that Alabama’s defense will shut us down. If you saw what Jordan Jefferson did to them….do you REALLY think that Cam isn’t going to slice and dice them? Cam has ten times the pockeet presence that Jefferson does, and is a much more disciplined runner. Unless something unusual happens….I just don’t see how they will stop us. Cam can revert to passing if the take the run away and we have too many weapons on the outside for them to go single coverage against us.
We might lose but it will be beacause of turnovers or something fluky, it won’t be because they have a better team….because they don’t. We will win.
Col.Angus may be rough, Col.Angus may not smell like a bed of roses, but deep down Col.Angus is very sweet. If I overstay my welcome, just tap me on the head!!
All excellent points.
The ‘experts’ keep using our close wins as barometers for how badly the Tide are going to manhandle us. Excuse me but, we have tape—SC and LSU games-on how to dismantle the Tide. Hell, if Stephen Garcia can outwit, outlast and outplay Bama, Cam most certainly can. Additionally, what about McElroy holding on to the ball FOREVER…he can’t do that with Fairley running at him all day (cue the pious indignation that Fairley is even allowed to play the game, as he is a defensive god amongst man-children). Ingram will get his numbers. Julio Jones might make it a long afternoon for our much maligned secondary. This is an excellent Bama team and this game will not be easy. But just as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow, the Defense will tighten and the Offense will start to run/throw wild. The only question left is Who is Nick Saban going to chew out this week??

I'm old too...
and my Commodore 64 used basic…..but I did take a Fortran class that still used punch cards…..is that old school or what?
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
my C-128 still works.
….as does the 1541 floppy drive. Sound is a little buggy on the Commodore monitor, but that’s an amazing shelf life for a 1985 computer I bought at Toys ’r Us!
…..I did one punch-card Fortran class in the “L” building at Auburn. I still use the “Do loop… continue” process in my planning 30 years later, so I suppose that was good training! Frankly, the punch cards were better than the paper tape junk you did in Basic! Much like Microsoft auto-save, your code was backed up from the get-go! Only the seniors or faculty got to use the high-tech floppy drives, when I was in school!
You had just better number those punch cards....
get them out of order without it and your in a world of hurt.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
great read
both teams are talked about in a way it should be… respect. im a bama faithful and would LOVE to win but i dont see it happening this year, especially after allowing LSU’s joke of an offense beat us ( and make no mistake their offense won them the game not the superior D.. still pissed by that game )… whatever, this is going to be a great game ..
RTR friends!
Welcome
Its going to be a heck of a game…..and I hope you’re right.
Thanks for being a respectful visitor…..they are so far and few between. I wish there could be good reasoned debate on all the boards without the childish name calling and inflamatory rhetoric. Come back any time….and if the Tide DOES roll, I will take my medicine.
Good Luck and have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

ive said it before
My fiancee and i are both for opposing teams, and we have a competition every year. The loser has to wear a shirt of the winning team for a day and have pictures taken. I’m a freckle covered bastard … i do NOT look good in Orange and Blue lol…. so if you all see a picture of a goofy looking gingerish looking dude … please try not to laugh too much haha

As a fellow semi-ginger...I sport freckles and have reddish hair, BUT, I look stunning in Auburn colors (if I do say so myself):
Embrace the burnt orange Auburn color…It won’t look as silly as you might think. Although a solid navy shirt with orange highlights is also a solid choice.:)
It’s fans like you that keep this rivalry, oh so great!!. Happy Thanksgiving and War Eagle!!!

that may work but got to say i just feel so much more comfortable in crimson ( oddly enough thats actually my favorite clothing color … and not because of bama either ) lol
either way RTR and happy thanksgiving guys !

Let's face it...
…NO one looks bad in burnt orange and navy blue!
….On the other hand, I’m REALLY partial to the light skinned, GORGEOUS red-hair look. This somewhat middle-aged swarthy-skinned, nearly bald-headed brunette dude is envious!
…..As far as clothes go… As blasphemous as it may sound, my favorite color combo is black and lime-ridiculous-as heck-electric-green is my favorite. Followed closely by blood-red and black. Yeah, that’s the 1980s metal-head in me talking! The fact is that I have more navy and burnt orange in my drawers, than anything. Can’t say I’m not loyal to Auburn!
Speak for yourself....
I am a dandy in the Orange and Blue….if you don’t believe me just ask my wife.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
