Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

A Weekend to Remember

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton faces his biggest test this weekend when the Tigers face South Carolina in the Georgia Dome.

Watching the Iron Bowl is like enduring three hours of surgery without anesthesia. The great philosopher and play-by-play man Verne Lundquist once said the thought of losing the Iron Bowl was worse for fans than the excitement of winning it. It's hard to disagree with that one, although I have to say I've felt mighty good for the last 72 hours.

In the days following the Auburn win, fans have tried to put into perspective the significance of Friday's victory over Alabama. While the 1972 and 1989 contests will always be special and rank near the top of anyone's Iron Bowl memories, what we witnessed in Tuscaloosa this year tops them all.

There's no way to put into words how horrible the first half was or how spectacularly beautiful the second half played out. There are so many memories that we'll keep with us forever.

For this writer, the enduring picture will be the faces of this senior class including, Lee Ziemba, Josh Bynes, Zac Etheridge, Kodi Burns and Wes Byrum. Watching them smile and celebrate with their teammates and fans in the end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium after the game is what makes this program so special.

Two years ago, these guys came into Tuscaloosa as wide-eyed sophomores lining up for an execution. They'd endured losing their beloved coach, suffered through the scrutiny of Gene Chizik's hiring and watched their cross state rival seize control of the state.

The turnaround at Auburn is unparalleled in SEC history. Despite all the success over the past two years at Bama, Auburn has withstood the test when most pundits wrote them off.

This program can now lay claim to seven of the past nine wins in the series. Auburn has gone from being picked fourth in the SEC West to ranked first in the BCS. Across the state, Alabama has gone from number one nationally to number four in the SEC West. See a trend?

Few would have believed Chizik would ever out-coach Nick Saban. On Saturday afternoon he ran circles around the state's anointed one. It wasn't supposed to be this way. Even with Cam Newton, this Auburn team had no business coming into the game undefeated and ranked second in the land. Year two is always suppose to be an improvement over the first one, but few have done it like Chizik.

He is playing with young talent and seniors who are performing way above their high school recruiting stars. What will this program look like with a few more stellar signing classes?

Two team goals are now complete. They've captured the division and whipped the defending national champions. Now comes the hard part. Saturday's game with South Carolina will be the toughest of the year.

The Gamecocks are arguably playing the best football in the SEC. Steve Spurrier has seen this Auburn offense in person. Whipping the ole ball coach twice in a year has never been done. Chizik's men will have to earn this championship. Bringing his guys down from an emotional win and ready for a conference championship game will be his toughest coaching job yet.

Did you ever believe you'd live long enough to see Auburn two wins from a national championship? Did you ever believe you'd witness a quarterback like Cam Newton in an Auburn uniform? Me either.

I'll see you in Atlanta on Saturday.  I'll be the guy with a huge smile on his face!

Gene Chizik has done more than Saban ever has...

Why do I say that? Because he came into a broken program with wholes everywhere and turned it completely around in 2 years. He sacrificed his welfare to get the best assistants possible. Leadership starts at the top and it started at the beginning with Chizik. He out recruited the best recruiter. He worked harder than the workaholic. He out-coached the “chosen one”. No one even had us on their radar! Even after we started getting noticed we have heard all year how the next team is the team to beat us…well let them talk because we will let our play on the field say what we need to say…and when this is all said and done…Jay Jacobs looks like a genius.

two completely different styles of coaching though

i think saban could fit in at a bunch of schools easily. As he has a very gritty but very comfortable defensive scheme. I love the man but its not the most innovative.

Chizik is not going to be a coach thats going to work out well at every school. I dont mean it in anyway as a slam against him either, because really its not. Count yourself as a very blessed group as his works extremely well with Auburn ( obviously )…

No need to compare coaches that arent even in the same sphere as each other. Again i mean that in a way that is not saying chizik is below saban or saban is god and such. I just mean its like saying that skydiving is better than scuba diving ( best random comparison i could come up with lol sorry )

Sorry, but I totally disagree with you

They may have different personalities and do things differently, but the job is the same regardless. They are not in different “spheres”. My original statement stands…
Of course you are entitled to your opinion and I respect it as such. :-)

same job ?

i mean its called the same thing, But i wouldnt call it the same thing.
Look at how both teams at their highlight moments ( for now ) are set up…. Auburn is HIGH octane Extremely strong offense made to be sporadic and surprising. Alabamas Offense is run the ball dont screw up… let the D win the game.

Those two teams are night and day i think

I agree with your argument as far as philosophy goes...

They have differing coaching styles yes, but wins are wins, and that’s what matters most at every single big time school.
Besides, we tried the the control offense with Tubberville. Nobody can honestly say Auburn didn’t continually produce top rate defenses under his guidance.
In two more years Auburn will be again producing top rated defensive teams, along with an explosive offense.
just sayin….

I think

in two years we will have another strong defense … and hopefully our Offense grows too. Right now we have a decent D that will be great next year and a decent O line ( when firing right) that should be stronger next year Especially if ingram stays ( but he wont )

next year isnt your offense going to be strapped though ??? i was under the impression your whole O line was seniors pretty much ( not wishful thinking… just curious)

Hey hey fellas

Congrats on the victory. Just wanted to chime in on a couple of things.

I wouldn’t exactly say that you “whipped” the defending national champs. South Carolina whipped the Tide. You guys won by 1 point. Still a great victory, but lets call apples and oranges what they are.

Also, “Whipping the ole ball coach twice in a year has never been done.” Might wanna check 1999. Bama didn’t whip him twice, but they did whip him once, and beat him by one point the other time. What you fellas did to them earlier this year wasn’t a “whipping.” It was a great comeback victory, just like you did in Tuscaloosa.

Like I said, congrats on a hard fought victory. Hope you fellas enjoy it because there’s only 361 days til we come to your house to try and get that trophy back. Lol. Enjoy Atlanta!

Right after Ricardson dropped a sure TD pass,

I thought Bama would regret it. The game was about to get way in Auburn’s favor until the PR fumbled the punt—Bama could not take advantage with a TD and for me, it had the feel that the game was over there with here comes Cam. Good luck against a tough SCar, this LSU fan will be rooting for you then and if you get a shot in the NCG—looks like the Ducks and what a game that would be.

(Real) Havey Pekar: I felt more alone that week than any. Sometimes I'd feel a body lying next to me like an amputee feels a phantom limb. All I did was think about Jennie Gerhardt and Alice Quinn and all the decades of people I had known. The more I thought, the more I felt like crying. Life seemed so sweet and so sad, and so hard to let go of in the end. But hey, man, every day is a brand new deal, right? Just keep on working and something's bound to turn up."

Thanks, Kong very gracious of you.

It’s good to read comments like this from a rival fan. Anyone can find fault especially after a disapointment. But when you can not only send congrats but find the good in our rivalry … That makes you one classy fan in my book. When it comes to this time of the year I am an SEC fan. I want us all to be in the most important bowls, kick but , and have as many of our schools finish high in the polls as possible. Looks like your the same. Good luck to y’all in the post season.

Glad

that you echo the same sentiments that I did last year for Alabama.

Tactically, it sucks rooting for your rival, but strategically, it’s the right thing to do. You have to be a big picture fan and know that it’s good for the conference and will pay dividends out directly or indirectly eventually.

An Auburn victory in Tuscaloosa, a SEC championship AND a national championship are defintely NOT part of 'The Process'.

Congrats on the win...

Wanted to make a few comments….You know how in grade school someone would copy whatever you were saying to get you annoyed? Get your own cheer. Auburn fans last year thought Bama fans were stupid for cheering Rammer Jammer when we only beat Auburn by 5 points…but this year it’s ok for AU fans to use it when they win by 1pt.
Perhaps Ingrams fumble rolls out of bounds on the 1yd instead of the back of the endzone.

Savor this victory…with the losses AU will have on offense (especially the line) and defense next year and the schedule…it looks to be a rough year a la Texas or Florida.

Recruiting??? Well, Auburn was down while Bama was in the top 3 in 2009. In 2010 Auburn was right ahead of Bama in the 2010 recruiting class. This year Bama is back in the top 3 and Auburn is (I think) #22 on Rivals.

Finally…think about this one. Two of Auburn’s greatest football players, maybe the greatest Auburn football players, (Bo and Cam) didn’t even want to go to Auburn. And with Cam, Auburn was forced on him by his dad.

  2. who cares, we have more talented backups than you realize, just wait, it gets better not worse from here
  3. who cares, Auburn wasnt #5 at this time last year either, we will finish stronger than you know
  4. who cares, like 28-27…only matters where you end up, not how you got there.

1. Obviously you care what happened, because you a. watched the game, b. responded to my post, c. would not be going to the BCS NCG if you lost.

2. Name me someone…

3. You have to do some more fundraising, right?

4. You care, Auburn fans cried and cried last year about winning 2/3 of the game.

1. you obviously don’t know what your are talking about.
2. Reed, you’ll get to know him really well next year, there’s a list of others but I’m getting tired of your bull crap
3. We don’t need to fundraise, we have recruits calling us, rather than get spanked on national television by an asshole maniac, they would rather get defended to the nth degree by someone with class Rather you want to admit it or not, Alabama’s stock went down Friday.
4. I never said anything last year except congratulations but I did think that we played a great game against ya’ll. We hung in with ya’ll and we really had very little to work with. It is a fact that we won 2/3 of the game, but it only matters what the score is in the end, just like 28-27.

Coming from someone

who knew of Julio’s family pre-college ball…Beach house?? The family lived in gov’t housing. This is a FACT. No shame in that…the woman (his mother) was doing her best…but in three years…no new job (that I know of) she sure is doing pretty good for herself. And the last time Julio was in Foley he was driving an Escalade (again a fact my nephew rode in it). I will not say it was his…but it is worth questioning.

HAHAHAHAHA

Wow, you have a little bit of anger there huh? You guys were supposed to kill us last year, everybody thought we were going to lose this year. So, yeah it’s a little bit different. Perhaps Auburn recovers that fumble and takes it back to the house. Perhaps you guys don’t get that ridiculous celebration call your way again and Auburn comes down the field and the comeback starts earlier than it did.

Yes, we will gladly savor this victory sir. The recruiting class will continue to improve this year, so no worries. It is not going to say at 22, and I know you really are proud of Auburn about for coming back at the end of the recruiting period. We appreciate it too. 2012 will feature one of the best recruiting classes Auburn has ever had.

I know you are really proud of Auburn overcoming that lack of talent and winning this last game. We appreciate that too and we thank you for your support. I am not sure what we would do without fans like you that are right there cheering with us the whole way. We can’t recruit, we don’t have a good coach, and nobody wants to come play here. We end your 20 game winning streak and go against the entire country each week. I know how thrilled you must be that little Auburn can do so much with so little. We know you are proud and that you cheer for us. But really, you aren’t needed and we aren’t little. Now, run along and play with your sisters and get some chocolate for that time of the month you seem to be having. You just let us worry about Auburn and you worry about Nick Saban and how the greatest coach ever to walk the face of the planet lost to someone like Chizik.

I'm not angry....

we had a Heisman trophy winner and National Championship last year. I’m not angry. A 9-3 year is a bit dissapointing, but we’ll recruit well and be back next year. I said congrats…I didn’t say anything about supporting your team Cam Newton.

Don’t you love it that Auburn wasn’t even where Newton wanted to go…AU came in a distant 3rd to UF and MSU….hope you had fun being his stepping stone to the NFL.

Nick Saban has two national championships…how many does Chizik have again???

Research...

When Cam was coming out of high school he WANTED to go to AU, but AU was recruiting Kodi Burns pretty hard, so he decided on UF. Now fast forward 2-3 years later, his desire to play @ MSU had everything to do with a relationship with Mullen. and nothing to do with the school. His father (more mature than his son) thought AU was a better fit…mature O-Line..all around BETTER program, and other reasons you will find out soon enough. So NO we were not a distant 3rd…we were ACTUALLY #1 all along. WDE!

I don’t like it, but if bama fans are going to dish it out, they should be prepared to take it as well.

Yep

i don't care if you dish it out...

but don’t you have enough brain cells to come up with your own cheer?? Or is that too hard?

Coming up with bush league bama style cheers like Rammer Jammer is not our style. And why bother when turning Rammer Jammer around on you guys works 10 times better at getting under your skin than anything else we could do.

On a side note, I find it hilarous that you are trolling here after bama pulled one of the epic choke jobs of all time. Please continue to embarrass yourself and your fanbase further.

No, I said earlier that I don’t like it, but I also think turn about is fair play. Again, reading comp. You should look into it.

Great read Jay.

It was definitely one of the all time great games for us and right now I’m on cloud nine. But only time will tell where it will rank. I expect it will remain at the top along with the ‘72 and ’89 games that have endured in the annals of Auburn Iron Bowl wins. Yet one of the greatest games ever is hardly mentioned anymore. The ’ 82 game which was the first win over Bama after going 0-9 against the pachyderms. A great win by another 2nd year Auburn coach, Pat Dye. But for me and for now, I’m with you, 2010 is “The One”!

Congratulations on the Iron Bowl win, aubies!

There, I took my medicine. You have an excellent shot to win the sec/national title. That hurt my fingers to type, but it’s true. Again, congrats and good luck. See you next year!

P.S. I still hate you!

Now that's the spirit.

Good luck to you guys in your bowl. By the way, I have not heard anything, but how is GMac? I hope he is ok.

by Jumpn_JackFlash on Nov 29, 2010 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks.

I really haven’t heard either. Last I have read, which was over the weekend, was that he should be fine to play in the bowl game, which indicates that maybe it wasn’t too bad. Looks like he just got his bell rung pretty good. Either way, it was tough to see him go out like that. Thanks for your concern.

How do you guys feel about the SECC? I know SC played you guys pretty close earlier on in the year, but honestly I think auburn was a different team at that point. I would probably put my money on a double-digit auburn win…but I guess you never know, it is the ole ball coach were talking about.

I can’t speak for everyone here, but I get nervous about every game we play. I feel like we should win the game, but I know that it will be tough beating USCe 2 times in one season.

by Jumpn_JackFlash on Nov 29, 2010 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

If I were you, I would feel pretty good about auburn’s chances. They seem to have that special “it” factor this season. What impressed me in the Iron Bowl with Auburn, was Bama effectively took Cam’s running threat away, and auburn was still able to respond. I felt sure that we had found a way to stop auburn, since it appeared Cam had been nuetralized. Not the case. So, I guess all the “auburn is nothing without Cam” speculation has been answered. Enjoy it guys, this type of team doesn’t come around very often!

I forgot about Mark Barron.

If he truely played the rest of the game with a detached pec muscle, I may have to revise my earlier list of most respected bama players of all time. I hope he can get it right before the combine.

by Jumpn_JackFlash on Nov 29, 2010 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks man, I hope so too!

As for Barron, from what I have read, he tore a pectoral muscle at some point during the first half of the game. Tough kid to stay out there playing like that, but I think it also testifies to our lack of quality depth in the defensive secondary.

I won't get all long-winded again...

Read my earlier post in this thread if you want to know my complete feelings about this thing as a ‘Bama fan… but there was one thing I didn’t point out…

The Iron Bowl was both the largest comeback ever successfully engineered against Alabama, and the largest comeback win in the history of Auburn. (Correct me if I’m wrong there.)

Again, congrats to our worthy rivals. That shows you the heart of this years’ Auburn team. Now, like I said before…go be champions.

I hope it's all going well for you at Birmingham man...

Well, if you are still there. I always like your posts and you are truly a class act. Have a great day.

by Sparkey on Nov 29, 2010 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

I'm still here...

I will finish my master’s at UAB in May…not sure where I’m heading after that…kind of depends on where my wife wants to go for her post-doctoral work- she’ll be finishing her doctorate here in the next 6-10 months(ish).

I appreciate your kind words…though as far as being a “class act”…there are plenty who know me who would probably disagree lol.

It’s all about having respect for a rival. If Auburn sucked year-in and year-out, it wouldn’t be much of a rivalry, yeah? Ditto if ’Bama were a weakling.

Besides, we ’Bama fans do a lot of talking about class and tradition. I was taught a long time ago that if you want to win with class, you must learn to lose with class as well. When a man, or a team, takes your best shot and comes out victorious over you, the only thing to do is look him in the eye, shake his hand, and genuinely congratulate him.

Then start working hard so you can beat him next time around :)

I just finished my post-doc, and started a faculty position. My specialty is Cellular Microbiology…if this is of ANY help you guys, we can easily get in touch….just shout :)

At UAB?

Haha that’s awesome. My wife is Molecular and Cellular Pathology, she’s over in the Zhang lab (9th floor of Sparks) working on Parkinson’s disease. She says she doesn’t know anyone in Cellular Microbiology…but I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d heard of her. She’s like…the one neuroscientist who runs round loudly cursing like a sailor with her cleavage popping out. It’s kind of difficult not to notice the woman :) Good thing for her she’s freaking brilliant or she’d never get away with being as eccentric as she is. A classmate of mine is a faculty member over in bone pathology, and he’s heard all about her despite never having met her. He tells me she’s notorious. I’m not even a little bit surprised.

Not at UAB,

but that doesn’t meant that I can’t help. I am from Birmingham, and have family there, and have a lot of colleagues all over the place. Anyway, after my doctorate, I got a killer post-doc and scored an awesome job with a great start-up package, right out of the gate. So, I know how to successfully navigate through the Process in this shitty economy……

by Tiger on the mountain on Nov 30, 2010 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

Sweet!

Sorry, I didn’t mean anything by assuming you meant UAB. I saw Birmingham on your profile…and when you see a scientist in B’ham, UAB is usually the assumption :) It’s just…so…frigging…BIG!

I appreciate you being willing to help. My wife is actually pretty concerned about the post-doc thing- she is really, really good at what she does, but the best positions are tough to come by (as I’m sure you know). I may have her get in touch with you about all of that. She’s really uncertain about it right this second, so some words of wisdom would do her a world of good right this second.

Oh gosh, no worries.

Half the battle is having a supportive spouse…really and truly. I am exceptionally lucky in this department and it sounds like your wife is lucky as well. I think that you can get to my e-mail in my profile, if not then we will find another way. I am sure that she has a ton of people giving her advice, but if I can be of help in any way, I am more than happy to do it. Oh-and i had a baby at the end of my post-doc and during my job search, so I can definitely give her (you guys) pointers on how to navigate that sort of trickeration.

by Tiger on the mountain on Nov 30, 2010 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Supportive Spouse? Hell yes!

She definitely has that. I am so proud of what she does I have a hard time not ranting and raving about it to total strangers.

The way I see it is this: I’m a marketer by nature. I think what I do is important, business makes the world go round and all…but at the end of the day, my job is to figure out what’s going to make people want to buy more things.

My wife, on the other hand, is doing research that may someday lead to breakthroughs in treatment of a disease that affects millions of people. That is so effing cool I can’t even begin to describe it. It’s far, far more important than anything I’ll ever do…so the most important thing I can do is to be there for her at the end of one of those 15 hour in the lab days.

Ok, I’ll shut up. You get the idea. I’m ridiculously proud of her.

I’m impressed that you were able to handle post-doc work and a new baby! That’s got to be tough. We’ve got a parrot and that’s more than enough to deal with, I can’t even imagine how it would be to have a kid too! We’ve already decided not to have kids, so at least that much is not complicated! I’ll get Donna in touch with you, I imagine she will really appreciate the help from someone who’s navigated these waters recently and come out of it in good shape.

Not gonna lie...

I might end up calling you up on that at some point. I’m in the first year of my doctoral program at the University of Kentucky. I graduated from Auburn with my bachelor’s in Microbiology, and spent most of time my senior year in a parasitology lab at the vet school. The first year is an integrated year here, but I’m going to most likely end up doing my dissertation work in either the Micro department or Biochem department (but only the one virologist in the biochem department).

ANY TIME!

Building your network is key. I love what I do, and I feel happy coming into work everyday. I found a rare position at a smaller University, where I get to do a lot of research, teach only minimally, and I get points for trying to get grants, and most people have families, so I don’t get the stink eye if I kick off a little early or don’t make it in on the weekends….which i don’t have to tell you, is extraordinarily rare in this stingy funding climate. Enjoy being a graduate student (I mean it will be painful); the best years are 3-5…you will be rolling in lab and you won’t have any ‘real’ responsibility. :)

Good luck to you!!!
