Is Urban Meyer Behind Newton Story?
Auburn Undercover.com senior editor Phillip Marshall is reporting this afternoon that Florida coach Urban Meyer is the person responsible for the Cam Newton pay-for-play story being leaked to the press over the past few days.
In the story, Marshall talks of a three-way phone conversation between Meyer, Miss State coach Dan Mullen and former Bulldog quarterback John Bond, who made news yesterday in a story for ESPN.com.
According to Marshall, Bond is quoted as saying that he and Mullen agreed that the Newton matter was closed after submitting all of their documentation to SEC Headquarters.
Meyer disagreed and told the two that he thought it needed to be reported to The New York Times and he was going to make the call. Pete Thamel, who wrote the Times piece is close friends with Meyer.
The story goes on to say that Bond agreed to be interviewed by ESPN.com only after it became apparent the story was going to break. Marshall writes that Bond "is distressed about the reaction, particularly the attacks on Newton's character."
Bond is quoted as saying, "(Meyer) is behind the whole thing."

If ya can't beat em, try as hard as you can to get them on probation
Do you remember that spelling bee you won in the first grade? Rock? "R-O-K"?
Meyer reportedly.....
came to this conclusion during a conjugal visit with Tebow.

Oh I can’t wait for Urban to come to Auburn next year. Revenge will be SWEET!
If this is true.
Then I think there is even less to this story than initially thought. Obviously the NCAA and the SEC haven’t been pursuing incredibly hard.
I think Rogers acted alone and the Newtons knew of nothing most likely.

You can put a lot of stock in it when ...
… it comes from both Phillip Marshal of Auburn Undercover.com and Mark Murphy of Inside The Auburn Tigers. Both of these men are long time distinguished journalist who are not in the habit of pointing fingers.
We’re not talking about low life muckraking character assasinating writers from the tabloid NY Times! We’re talking about real journalist.

i think
he is afraid to play us in atlanta. he is trying to get cam in trouble so he won’t look so bad when we run all over their asses. if they can make it past south carolina

so we can beat them so bad that Urban Meyer will have to take a real “leave of absense”.

ESPN sent a text reporting
“AP: AUB had no contact with man who allegedly sought money from MSST in recruitment of QB Cam Newton”
That’s word for word, and I’m starting to feel better.

are skewering Phillip Marshall on the Buck and Kincade Show here in Atlanta as being an irresponsible blogger. Anyone listening to Finebama today?

Against my better judgement...
…..I turned it on and am following the EDSBS live thread. Paul’s actually been pretty reasonable, and has nuked every caller that has connected dots not there. He also asked if the New York Times is “Urban Meyer’s bitch.” LOL!
…..I haven’t seen any retraction over at AUC from Marshall.
Why?
He can’t be any more irresponsible than anyone else who’s been running with this thing on nothing but some allegations. Unless he made up a source throw him right in there with Forde, Thayer Evans, and Pete Thamel as journalists writing what they hear. It’s a ridiculous double standard if they’re not killing those guys at ESPN and the NYT as well. But I’m not able to listen to it.

I have another maybe stupid question...
Why did these three have a phone conversation together? I like Marshall, but things don’t add up on the whole thing.
As stated above -
John Bond was on the Buck & Kincade show on 680 The Fan in ATL this afternoon and stated, in no uncertain terms, that there was no phone conversation between him, Mullen, and Meyer.
DWWD -- WDE!
I think...
…..and please note that I have no evidence! that Mullen brought it up to Urban and Meyer wanted to talk to Bond. For all the jabs at Meyer by us Tigers, I’d figure his motive in this is more the hatred of agents campaign he’s been on for a while.
Good question Sparkey....
Bond is in management at a heavy construction company and would be at most a booster to the MSU program. Schlabach (douchebag) has said that MSU didn’t notify the SEC until after Cam committed to AU meaning sometime in January. That sounds like they didn’t consider it a problem until Cam committed somewhere else. F*ck MSU, F*ck Meyer, And F*ck Thamel.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I cannot I disagree...
If we do survive this, damn this really put Auburn together. Even more than we were before, we have some sort of bond now that is something I cannot explain. We had it before, but it’s something even a little different.
A John Bond?

It's beyond that...Meyer is the mentor of Mullen.
As a young professional, I still call my former mentors or e-mail them on a regular basis. This was a sticky situation, why wouldn’t he (Mullen) trust his mentor and call him and talk to him about it. It might be just that simple.

I guess...
…..I’ll carry my earbud radio outside and keep listening, but there’s no real news on F-bomb thus far. I’ve got a grill to light and a roast to cook. The live thread on EDSBS has been pretty tame, by their standards.
I just have to keep cool I guess.
I do not understand all of this. It just does not make sense. I am confused and I probably will stay that way.

Does Urban
not have anything better to do? This whole mess is just confusing, it probably all amounts to some idiot impersonating an agent trying to get some money out of his old school. Urban….I can’t even fathom what the heck he’s up too….
Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL Offense!
John Bond...
….is now denying that any 3-way call happened. Either he’s a liar, or Phillip Marshall posted hearsay when he shouldn’t have.
I cannot think of a reason
for Bond to be lying about this. Regardless of the outcome, it certainly appears that he has done nothing wrong. I’ve always liked P. Marshall but, damn, I just think he posted something a bit too quickly and without the necessary proof. Or it sure seems that way.
DWWD -- WDE!
Contraire....
John Bond and MSU does have plenty to gain out of this even if it proves to be untrue it will be months before the smoke clears and any players that we are recruiting that MSU is recruiting could be swayed by this…..also note that MSU didn’t report this to the SEC until January after Cam had signed with AU which tells me that they were probably not concerned with the possible ethics violation until they were out of the running for Newton (sour grapes).
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

not to mention that all of this....
probably tripled the chances that Cam will move on to the next level after this season. Why stick around and deal with all of this BS next season? We play UF and MSU next season.
Why am I suddenly so glad that Bama misspelled MississiPPi on their tix this season? I really didn’t care before….
If he did that
I am certainly disappointed in Phillip Marshall if he really just threw something out there that quickly. I realize he is trying to defend Auburn, but more hearsay does not help all that much in my view.
I have read Phillip Marshall for decades....
I would be SHOCKED! I mean SHOCKED! if he just ‘threw something out there quickly’. Just sayin’. I don’t see that happening. I just don’t. I was not convinced of the Urban Meyer connection until this article.

if it's true
there are so many rumors. this is a chicken with its head cut off. who knows where it’s going next.
Not surprised by Meyer in this...but I smell Saban....or maybe an elephant in the room??????

The NY Times
now there’s a objective & fair/balanced journalistic masterpiece.
Been a lot of years, but my memory suggests the tuscaloosa bunch – considering the timing. Meyer I’d suggest would have been timed much earlier – or after the game in that ugly town where the men are men and the farm animals have a smile on their face & a cigarette on their lips (male or female farm animals).
rumor
i did hear from an alabama friend that there were rumors of money to cam this past summer. those people are alabama people and they may be passing second hand news about miss st. report and conjured up speculations
News continues to trickle out.
…..And… the story keeps changing. You know, I told a few tall tales as a kid, and now I’ve got kids of my own. When that story keeps changing, you’ve got ’em nailed.
….My two cents… I got a sick feeling when the news out of Atlanta was that John Bond said he’d never talked to Mullen and Meyer about it. Bang, someone’s lying. Surely Phillip wouldn’t spread a wild rumor like some message board troll?
…..Of course not. I have seen Mr. Marshall be wrong once or twice (aren’t we all, occasionally?), and he’s always immediately retracted it and apologized. And I’ve been reading Phillip ever since al.com went live back in the 1990s.
…..Meanwhile, Bond continues to squirm, and add elements to his story. NOW… there were “a couple of guys” between him and “presumably” Rogers. Meyer’s retired, no he’s not, yes he is…
…..My take is that this is a cluster-f of a situation where at the principle players didn’t exactly sit down and get their stories straight before talking to various press folk. What no one is saying is that this thing could be potentially damaging to Mississippi State. What we’re being told is by Mullen and Co. is that they kept on recruiting a kid who’s agent had his hand out. Based just on what we’ve heard in the past two days, there’s really little surprise that Cecil Newton decided it would be best for Cam to not sign with MSU.
I missed
the interview with John Bond on 680 The Fan, but caught the aftermath with John Kincaid criticizing Marshall. Bond is actually friends with Kincade’s cohost, former GA QB Buck Beleu.
I’ll see what shakes out after this weekend with Bond. If he does keep changing his story, then his credibility is suspect.
Regardless, all this would mean is that Meyer may have leaked the story. Who cares? If that turns out to be true, Meyer will become the next Phil Fulmer tattletale of the conference and won’t be long for this world in coaching in the SEC. Besides, we can seek our own retribution on him soon enough. Meyer’s involvement and meddling, if proved, still doesn’t change the douchery committed allegedly by Kenny Rogers.

i agree acid reign
you get that sinking feeling, which is possibly the doubt that bond or meyer or whomever is behind this wants. as long as auburn people have trust until our trust is betrayed, we will prevail. it’s the doubt from the detractors that can tear down success. i pray, more than anything that chizik and staff are what they appear to be- strong men with great intentions to build young men into successful auburn men and send them into the world to do great things. what would a national title run be without attacks. cams gone though troubles before, surely he’s focused on avoiding other such episodes.
forgive my rumor fear.
war eagle!
Chizik and Co.
Seem to be very strong men. The Chiz and Chet Williams(team chaplin) spoke together at the Auburn Arena the other night and from that I truly believe Chizik to be a great man. Just from listening to him you could tell he only wants what’s best from the players, the team, and Auburn. The more on this story I read the more I’m convinced of some fishy foul play and dare I say it conspiracy again Auburn!
anyone know where I can find a podcast or recording of the Bond part of the
show on 680?
I listened to Kenny Rogers earlier. Deny, deny, deny. What else could he do? I would have liked for them to ask him how he does make money, though. He acts like he works for free connecting kids and universities. I think he is dirty as hell and was trying to bail out his bankrupt company.
I really hope Phillip isn't wrong about this....
but it didn’t sound good to me. Who knows. This interview could have been totally rehearsed for all that we know. I wouldn’t put anything past anyone at this point………..
Thanks!

This Just In
According to ESPN, Kenny Rogers was on Dallas ESPN Radio 103.3. Among the more interesting notes:
1) He (Rogers) claims to not have talked to Bond in around 20 years
2) He claims to not
3) He claims neither a school nor an alumnus has ever paid for a kid
4) Claims no contact with Auburn
You can find the entire interview here (Kenny Rogers: 11/5 under “Archived Podcasts”):
This whole thing just gets less and less believable by the minute.
dzer13: He did mention that parents pay him to try to find better scholarships/situations for their kids.
I heard him say that too.....
about the parents. I just find it hard to believe that is his sole income. A parent who thinks his son is good enough to play for a certain level of school will send the tape directly there. They don’t need an intermediary’s opinion for that, imo. He mad ethe comment that he would request tape of the individual and tell the parents where he thinks he would fit in…..I’m not buying that as a career for someone who doesn’t even sound like they ever stepped foot on a college campus. :)
Scholarship finders
You can send your transcripts around to hundeds of universities yourself, too, but there are services that charge you a fee to do it with the assertion that they have the inside track on getting your kid a scholarship. Scams abound.
other rumors
i looked around (masochistic me) on line for rumors and what not. i found a site that talked of increased revenue for cecil’s trucking company and donations to his church. how does that stand if the ncaa finds that to be true. i mean, i don’t think chizik or the university would have anything directly to do with that, but the rogue alumni with much more money than me. if cam was already a part of auburn, is there a rule against this kind of “payment”?
as for bond and rogers, i guess one is wrong and luckily, neither one is associated with auburn.
Church still in disrepair
New NY Times article this morning states that, according a city of Newnan official, Cecil Newton’s church building is still not up to code and the congregation is meeting somewhere else. All the alleged circumstantial evidence gets weaker and weaker.
by averagefan on Nov 6, 2010 8:53 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I heard/read something to this effect as well.
The fact was, that the church was brought up to code, but only barely, and has come close (now apparently) has slipped back under code.

3 way conversation - Bond, Mullen, Meyer
FYI: Bham News 11/6/10 paper, article by Scarbinsky and Goldberg mention they have a source that confirms the 3 way phone conversation about Newton’s recruitment took place several months ago.
Looks like Mashall knows what he is reporting to be fact.
Now, it appears that Bond and Meyer [Meyer’s personal assistant/rep texted Finebaum Friday that the phone conversation with Mullen and Bond was inaccurate] are both liars.
So, who is to blame for the Newton story? Meyer or Bond…… maybe both!
Hope we find out soon and put this NON-story to bed!
