Thoughts on a Heisman Weekend

There's few things in our sporting life any better than watching one of our own receive the Heisman Trophy. It's the single greatest achievement in all of sports. When Cam Newton claimed the award for himself and Auburn Saturday night, he became the third orange and blue Tiger to step to the podium and accept the trophy. There are only four other schools who have more - Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Ohio State and Oklahoma.

The lasting memory of the night for me was watching close to a 1,000 Auburn fans gather in Times Square for what's unquestionably the most unique Tiger Walk in school history.  Kudos to the New York City Auburn Club for putting it together.

That single moment is what separates Auburn from every other school in America. If that didn't make the hair on your arms stand up then you may want to get to a doctor...

I thought it was classless for ESPN to bring up the Newton issues during the actual ceremony. Despite trying to clear the air and take questions during an extensive sit down with Chris Fowler earlier in the week, the network felt it necessary to make it a story during Newton's big moment.

In the end, Newton showed much more class than the national media...

The joke all week among media members was that Stanford's Andrew Luck would collect his Heisman Trophy in April, when he's likely to be the first quarterback chosen in the NFL draft. According to long time NFL executive and current draft consultant Gil Brandt, Newton's name will be called within minutes of Luck's.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Brandt called Newton, "the most exciting player I can ever remember watching" and said he had all the skills to be a star in the NFL.

"I am not an advocate of guys coming out of school early," Brandt said. "But I think that if he does come out of school, I don't think there's any question he'll be selected in the first half of the first round (of the draft) unless there is something physically wrong with him."

Listening to Brandt gush brings back recollections of another great Auburn player 25 years ago. The same kinds of accolades were thrown on Bo Jackson following his Heisman win. If memory serves me correct, he pretty much lived up to the hype. Newton has those same tools...

The hiring of Will Muschamp at Florida has many interesting angles and is sure to make the SEC even more of a soap opera. The first question that must be asked is what happened to Dan Mullen? Many believed it was only a formality before he fled Starkville and arrived back in central Florida.

Apparently, Muschamp's sub-par year at Texas had little effect on his reputation. It's interesting to watch how Georgia people react to the hiring. There were more than a few holding out hope he'd end up in Athens next season.

Should Muschamp grab a win in his first Georgia-Florida game next year, look for there to be a mutiny in North Georgia. I can hardly wait...

I'll always be grateful to Tommy Tuberville for what he did for Auburn, but his latest move is puzzling. Like his tenure at Auburn, he seems to thrive on being in the mix for other positions.

Tuberville has acknowledged interviewing for the Miami job (Al Golden was hired Sunday night). It was a classless move. Granted, Lubbock would not be high on my list of places to live, but the university made a commitment to him less than a year ago. More importantly, those players made a commitment.

Looking to bolt after only one year will likely make things more complicated for him at Texas Tech. After a 6-6 season that many saw as an underachievement, Tuberville may find himself in a familiar situation - at odds with the school administration...

If you are looking for tickets to Glendale, I'd recommend pulling the trigger soon. Watching the action on Stubhub.com, ticket prices are increasing slightly each day. Shortly after the SEC Championship, seats could be had for around $500 each. A check today shows the price of a single seat nearing $1,000.

This year's championship ticket is at more of a premium than last year's game. While the Rose Bowl seats more than 100,000, the Glendale facility holds slightly north of 70,000. The demand for tickets appears equally strong on the Oregon side. That's no surprise considering the school has never played for a championship.

Great read Jay.

Always interested in your perspecrtive. I agree, the on line video of the Tiger Walk was very special. Hearing the fans shouting " It’s great to be an Auburn Tiger" as the four finalist went along the line. Wow, what a special moment for Cam. That act alone made me proud to be an Auburn Tiger.

It was also great to see Bo and Pat there. And then to hear Cam end his speech with “War Eagle” it was truly a special moment.

Muschamp to Fla. is more than puzzling to me. I could see them hiring back Mullen or going after Malzahn, but Muschamp? The UGA defensive minded dawg ? The Fla. – Ga. game just got more interesting.

Happy Monday!

Great read, Jay!

I didn’t know what I was more disappointed in: ESPN dredging up scandal during the Heisman ceremony (did the same thing to Ingram) OR the fact that Florida couldn’t wait until Sunday to name their new head coach. Stay classy, SEC.

All that aside, it is GREAT to BE an Auburn Tiger! War Eagle, Cam!

I am wondering about Florida ...

Do you think Jeremy Foley has had enough of the Urban Meyer drama which led him to shy away from Meyer’s protege in Mullen? I think the childish behavior of Meyer and Mullen makes me think so. I believe that is why Foley wanted to clean house and wanted nothing to do with Mullen.

Also, Cam has shown nothing but CLASS through this whole episode. I wish I could say the same thing for ESPN. They have tried to sensationalize every moment of this story. I hope ESPN gets a lump of coal in their stocking this Christmas. Jeremy Schad can get a pile of poo in his stocking as well.

War Eagle.

Very Good Observations......

I think you hit the nail on the head with Mullen and Meyer. Foley had enough of the sophmoric attitudes from these two, especially the Mullen end of this. With all the “he said, she said” in the Newton uproar, and the “leaking” out of Newton’s possible grade problems from within his school, left Mr. Foley with no other choice.

I wish we could all be more calm and collected when faced with life’s storms as Cam has been.

Is to hear that Malzahn and Cam are coming back. Good read.

I'll settle for a BCSNC!!!

but your idea would be a nice topper! Although unlikely :( Kiper moved Cam up to #8 on his ‘Big Board.’

I think Gus will be back, if Vandy is the only offer he gets this season.

Muschamp to UGA and Golden to Miami...

Make me feel a lot better about out chances of keeping Gus Malzahn around for another season. Although Vandy is sold on Malzahn, I’m not completely sure Malzahn is sold on Vandy. Too many coaching careers have died in Nashville.

One possibilty that scares me, though: with Muschamp gone from Texas, it would not surprise me to see the Longhorns make a play for Malzahn by not only offering him big money, but also making him their next head coach in waiting. I haven’t seen anything to confirm this as a possibilty, so I hope I’m just being paranoid.

They say Cam shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy.

Actually, Twitter feeds are saying....

Randy(name?) Shannon to Texas. The former coach at Miami is being offered as soon as UT can get a package ready for his agents.

Oops.

I meant UF for Muschamp. I guess it would help to proof read.

Shannon would be the DC at Texas, and I’d be surprised to see him given the HCIW title judged on his time at Miami.

You are correct...

Shannon will be offered the DC, I think UT goes after a Big 12 assistant instead of Malzahn. Someone who is currently recruiting against them. At least I hope they do.

ESPN

was awkward at best, classless at worst.

Tuberville did just burn a lot of political capital.

It’s one of his special skills. He might even have it in a special section on his resume.

Oh yea

I love Lee Corso to death, but in something like the Heisman ceremony which is less scripted than Game Day, I don’t feel he is capable of carrying on an interview physically anymore, due to his stroke. I don’t want him to continue to be propped up like Dick Clark’s corpse is on New Year’s Eve.

Classless but telling

The ESPN classlessness of mentioning the issue of Cecil Newton is telling of how badly this scandal reflects on Auburn. The fact that Cecil is guilty will forever be a black eye on this great season and all of Cam’s accomplishments. I don’t believe that eligibility and innocence are the same, and I don’t really expect the media to let it slide by either. There is no doubt Cam Newton is the best player in college football this year and truly deserving of the Heisman. There is also no doubt in my mind he knows exactly what was going on during his recruiting. He will be gone this year no doubt he will be following the money. He will take a little bit of Auburn’s integrity with him.

by JRAUTiger on Dec 13, 2010 1:55 PM CST reply actions

Why am I a poser?

Is it because I am a little bit ashamed? I don’t think there is a school in the SEC that is not paying players in some form. I am excited by the stellar season this has been and the excitement Cam brought to our team. I just wish we could still pretend he was innocent.

by JRAUTiger on Dec 13, 2010 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

No it's because you just joined here recently for the purpose of-

Wrong

I may have just joined but I have been a loyal fan for 25 years and season ticket holder. I love the Auburn family and all that it stands for. It really bothers me to see such a great name drug down and the folks around it pretend nothing happened. If someone in the family takes a dump on the rug during Christmas dinner does your whole family walk by and smile like it never happened? I just joined because it amazes me everyone can pretend this did not happen. I am still a loyal fan and always will be but this is not going to just go away. Cecil Newton has smudged our reputation and made this an asterisk year.

by JRAUTiger on Dec 14, 2010 7:32 AM CST reply actions

No loyal Auburn person would be posting negative statements like that on the net.

If you truly are a "loyal’ Auburn person, you have a peculiar way of expressing your loyalty. You sound more like a bammer with comments like:

There is also no doubt in my mind he knows exactly what was going on during his recruiting. He will be gone this year no doubt he will be following the money. He will take a little bit of Auburn’s integrity with him.

With friends (family) like that, who needs enemies?

by PineMtTiger on Dec 14, 2010 8:04 AM CST up reply actions

Loyal but honest

I am loyal but I will pass on the Kool-Aid. There is no doubt we have the best player in college football on campus in Cam Newton. He has done nothing that is not going on on every other campus especially, I am sure, in Tuscaloosa, but his dad screwed us when he got caught. I would love to eat my words and have him return next year along with Fairley so we could see if we could repeat as NC. But I do not expect it, truth is the money is there and it has been demonstrated how the family functions. And honestly the sooner he is gone the sooner we can begin to clear the air and I have faith in Chizik and Malzahn to recruit and coach us and continue a new era for Auburn greatness.
