Tigers Should Bring Home a Title!
A close game, or not?
War Eagle, everybody! In just two days, the SEC Western Division Champion Auburn Tigers will play for the league title. Despite the incredible season and Auburn's 12-0 record, the Auburn Nation has been on pins and needles regarding rumors regarding the eligibility of star Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton. Yesterday, the NCAA ruled that Cam IS eligible, and that there was no evidence of wrong-doing by either Cam or Auburn. That is a HUGE relief to Tiger fans! We've stood accused, vilified, and burned at the stake in the national media, and the decision by the NCAA is an emphatic "not guilty" verdict! I do NOT want to hear the work "asterisk" again this season, writers!
In addition to the relief for Tiger fans, this news must be a boon to Cam, the Auburn players and coaches. There's little doubt that opposing schools' recruiters have used the uncertainty against Auburn. "You don't want to go there. They are going to be on probation for a long time!" After the SEC Title game, there will be a frenzy of recruiting visits. It's really great to have this onus off. Coach Chizik and his assistants come out of this controversy completely vindicated. It's also a triumph for Cam Newton and the players that a great season was not shot down by rumor-mongering.
There's a game Saturday, and we'll turn to that now. There's been a number of misconceptions about the previous Auburn vs. South Carolina matchup, and we'll clear those up today. Expect a certain level of frenzy from the Carolina contingent, and rightly so. They've never been in this position before. They have every right to be excited. Not only that, but Carolina looks like they'll be loaded again next year. For many Carolina fans, this is just the beginning.
Many folks blame the Carolina loss to Auburn back in September on 4 turnovers at the end of the game, two fumbles by Stephen Garcia, and two interceptions by Connor Shaw. They say that Auburn would have lost, except for the turnovers. Those pundits conveniently forget that Auburn coughed up the ball twice in their own end to set up two Carolina scores. The 20-7 deficit Auburn recovered from was set up by Auburn turnovers. Remove the turnovers by both teams, and Auburn still wins.
Much of the late game turnover bug for the Gamecocks was caused by the Auburn defensive line. Quarterback meltdowns in the final period are nothing unique to this game. Auburn's gotten to quarterbacks all season, and the wear and tear results in poor play late. That's a pattern, not an aberration. Auburn's defensive line looks a good bit different than what we've been used to the past decade. Most years, Auburn's tackles post up in the middle, and pressure comes from the ends. This year's edition collapses the pocket, largely due to the efforts of Nick Fairley. This requires extra attention to contain by the ends. Some say that the Auburn ends have had a down year, but the fact is that they can't beat Fairley to the quarterback. This unit fills gaps well in the running game, too. This year's D-line also has something that's been in shorter and shorter supply since 2004: quality depth. The Tigers rotate about 10 players, and Fairley and the starters are still fresh and strong in the 4th quarter. With tales of Stephen Garcia's arm in a sling, and hurt fingers on this throwing hand, I'd be worried if I were a Gamecock fan!
My guess would be that South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore will be selected as the freshman offensive player of the year, regardless of what he does in the SEC title game. Lattimore had rough sledding in Auburn, picking up only 33 rushing yards. It can't hurt that the Auburn linebackers are playing their best football of the season coming into this game. I opined in my preseason preview that Auburn's front seven was stronger than Carolina's blockers, and that played out in the first matchup as Carolina managed just 79 rushing yards. Carolina threw the ball to move it, and I suspect that will be the case again in the title game.
The greatest worry in the title game is the matchup of Carolina's wide receivers against the Auburn secondary. One can argue that the Tiger defenders get better as the game goes on, as evidenced by Julio Jones' plunge in production after the first quarter of the Iron Bowl. I think part of that plunge was Saban's insistence on playing Jones on return teams. Auburn has some head-hunting coverage guys like Demetruce McNeil and Craig Sander, as well as Eric Smith. Jones got hammered on returns. Some folks might say that double covering Alshon Jeffery is the answer, but Auburn did that quite a bit in September, and Jeffery still managed 192 receiving yards. In addition, there are threats elsewhere. Tori Gurley, Ace Sanders, D. L. Moore, tight end Patrick DeMarco and running back Marcus Lattimore are all good receivers. If there's an issue in the Gamecock corps, it's that the catches are heavily slanted Jefferey's way. He's got 75 catches on the season, Gurley has 39, and no other Gamecock has more than 23. Auburn rotated corners all day against the Gamecocks, so that no one man had to chase Jefferey all game long.
Special teams play should slightly favor Auburn. Spencer Lanning is a weapon for the Gamecocks, with a similar field goal percentage to Auburn's Wes Byrum. Lanning punts also, and he's near the top of the league with a 43.8 yard average. Carolina covers 'em, too, giving up only 8 yards per return. Auburn's punting game has problems, but it's not something the Tigers do much of. Auburn punted only twice in the first matchup against South Carolina. The Auburn return game nearly cost us the Iron Bowl, and Gene Chizik indicated in a recent press conference that the Tigers are considering making changes for this game. As far as kickoffs go, Auburn's Wes Byrum is doing a good job, and Auburn's coverage is among the best in the league at only 19.8 yards per return. Carolina has only averaged 20.6 yards per return, similar to their coverage numbers. Auburn's Demond Washington and Onterio McCalebb are averaging 25.8 yards per return.
The Auburn offense is the key to victory in the SEC Title game. Despite what folks may think, Auburn's offense never was really stopped in the first matchup with South Carolina. The Gamecocks managed four scoring drives, two off Auburn turnovers. Meanwhile, Auburn generated five, plus two missed field goal attempts. Auburn held a big yardage edge, rolling up 492 yards to Carolina's 384. Auburn overpowered the Gamecock line to rush for 334 yards. That equation has not changed, and the Auburn passing attack has become more developed since week four. Cameron Newton can sew up a Heisman Trophy with a solid performance in Atlanta.
Other intangibles favor the Tigers as well. They've had an extra day to prepare. Carolina faced a rivalry game like Auburn did. Clemson did not play well, especially on offense. On defense, however, Clemson's front four did some damage up front. A week after facing DeQuan Bowers and Co., the Gamecocks now have to face Nick Fairley and a ten-deep line. With quarterback Stephen Garcia ailing, it's not a good situation.
For Auburn, the Tigers must keep an even keel. An SEC Championship Game is uncharted territory for our players as well. We'd also prefer it if the Tigers broke their pattern of digging an early hole and getting behind by several scores. However, the bottom line is that Auburn's better on both lines of scrimmage, and should win this game if they take care of business. War Eagle! See you in Atlanta!

Well I just hope Im quick on the draw when the win is a lock
Im going to have my phone ready to make the flight and room reservation asap to glendale.
It's going to be a great game! We are in for a ride...but I think we will come out victorious.
This is our year..
Agree with you on the receivers and secondary. With Spurrier, It is the thing to watch for Saturday. Other than that it will come down to mistakes. I hope we can keep our heads, but so far so good this season! We have come too far to blow it now..the finish line is in view…the train to Glenndale is arriving at the station…we just have to knock SC out of the way to board it.
War Eagle!!
That 71 rushing is going to be hard to duplicate.
but hey Cam is much better passer now also.
Roll Tide.
Acid,
In your opinion, do you think the team will come out more relaxed, and free because of these troubles being behind them?
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
I think so.
……But not too relaxed! After all, possibly playing in two title games is plenty of pressure!
……Expect Spurrier and the Gamecocks to be loose, too. No one gives them much chance. I think we’re around a ten point favorite right now. I think you’ll see a few wild plays out of Darth Visor. Maybe he’ll even dust off his old Emory & Henry formation!
Do you think that we will trot out some more corner blitzes this week?

if SC has watched just a bit of film...
they’ll use a 3 step drop or shotgun throughout the game.
i’m pretty sure more often then not we’re going to count on our front 4 for the pressure…
we need all the bodies defending 10 yards as possible.

Actually, we're a 5-point favorite

really enjoyed this write -up... THANKS.
“Auburn’s gotten to quarterbacks all season, and the wear and tear results in poor play late. That’s a pattern, not an aberration.”
Defensively, this is the “detail” of improvement in 2010 that has made the most impact… in my opinion.
Offensively, the emergence of Newton as a wildly consistent short yardage 3rd down option has sustained drives and allowed the offense to move the chains where so many in ‘09 failed- throwing the D back on the field. Newton’s ability on 3rd and short has overcome this burden to a significant degree.
i’m not sure anyone could argue this Auburn team has really put a full game together yet… i’m hoping that with the iron bowl behind them… this saturday is the day …
IT ALL COMES TOGETHER.
i’m pretty sure that with the AU D holding bama to what… 69 yards rushing?… that Alshon Jefferey will be thrown to more times than Lattimore gets carries. I would not be surprised if he gets over 20 balls thrown his way.
with 2 good Defenses fielding the game, i suspect there will be a turnover / field position battle in the background on saturday.
war eagle!

Great write up!
I saw a commercial last night during Survivor for the Game—and it was all I could do, but contain my excitement. My husband, who does not enjoy football as much as I do, is soooo understanding!!!
I think yesterday’s news will serve to further galvanize this already solid team. For all of the players who worked their tails off this season, the possibility of an asterisk at the end of it would have been disheartening. At the same time, Chizik and his staff navigated this situation as artfully as we could hope. I am proud of Auburn! I am proud of Cam Newton! I am proud of all of the Auburn Tigers! I am also proud of us fans for not jumping ship when things looked a little shaky.
War Eagle! Beat South Carolina!!

Like he said before the season
At the very least, he can just go out there and fair catch the ball and not drop one. Carr (who went to my high school, btw) has not been impressive this year. His decision making on whether to catch or let it go, and whether to fair catch or try to return, has been poor at best. And when he has decided to return one, what kind of gain has he gotten? Minimal. I’d rather just fair catch or let the ball go every time.

some questions
Congratulations on a fine year, Auburn. I am looking forward to watching y’all play South Carolina this weekend, and potentially a great National Championship match between Auburn and Oregon. While the Cam Newton situation has been a distraction, ultimately the real college football fan in me wants to see him play.
A few questions:
1. If the investigation is truly over, as many commenters and the author of this blog suggests, when do y’all think Cam Newton will be allowed to speak? I am dying to know his side of the story. For someone who revels in the spotlight as much as Cam does after a victory, I would think he would enjoy the opportunity to clear his name, (if, indeed, he was unaware of any wrongdoings).
2. Does Pat Haden have a legitimate beef? The AD at So Cal has stated publicly that there are some parallels between Cam and Reggie Bush in how the NCAA has interpreted rules, and he feels that the NCAA is not acting in a consistant manner.
3. The NCAA has stated that their enforcement division does not have enough evidence to make a decision on this matter. Do y’all think the NCAA is still investigating? Do y’all care?
You might want to refer to another thread we have ongoing...
Hope some answers there will help.
Thanks for the kind words of support.

Thanks!
Even though I am a fan of a rival school, I am very interested how this whole thing plays out. I admit that while I think the whole process is flawed, I would be very bummed watching Oregon play TCU.
I think the NCAA and Auburn have, very intelligently, figured out how to give Auburn their shot at the Championship. I wish y’all luck. Even though part of me roots against my rival in the coming weeks before a big game, I always revert to pulling for the SEC before the opening kickoff. Funny how that works.
Answers
1. If we don’t allow Cam to speak after the game this weekend, we will be facing a pretty heavy fine from the league office. If he speaks, I doubt he “clears his name” or anything like that. He’ll probably just say he’s thankful it’s over, and not give any real answers unless the question is about the game.
2. I don’t think Pat Haden has legitimate beef, because there’s one key difference: Reggie bush actually received benefits while playing at Southern Cal. There has been no proof that Cam (or Cecil) have received any benefits, from MSU or Auburn. Tons of people are missing this difference.
3. I’m not sure the NCAA is still investigating, but I do think people are making a big deal out of their statement that there is insufficient evidence and that the eligibility people act before the investigation is over with. First of all, what investigation? Auburn University has never received a letter of inquiry and is not currently under investigation. Second of all, people are taking this to mean “if new information comes out, Auburn could be in trouble.” Well of course that’s true! Based on the evidence we currently have, Julio Jones is eligible immediately. If new information were to come out that hurt his eligibility, then Alabama could be in trouble. Same for AJ Green. Same for LaMichael James.

i think that none of the 3 questions you are asking are relevant to Auburn right now.
1. why? no connection between cam newton or Auburn and the Miss St. stuff found.
period.
2. these 2 stories aren’t even comparable. $ exchanged hands at USC. based on the investigation so far… no $ (or extra benefits) exchanged hands in the cecil newton situation.
3. it does appear that the enforcement folks are continuing an investigation, however, the investigation focus regarding whether Cam Newton is an eligible player is OVER. my impression is that the investigation continues focused on ironing out the story as it relates to Miss St., kenny rogers, and cecil newton.
wappa
An investigation may continue, but at this point Auburn is out of it.
I doubt if they have had phone, financial, church and school records since July they are going to find something new now. I think Auburn is cleared. If anything this should help us in recruiting because the arguement could be made that we are a clean program, having nothing found that implecated us in wrongdoing.
Miss State on the other hand….I would be nervous.
I always appreciate the good read, Acid.
I’m also glad to hear that changes are going to be made in the punt return game. If only Reed was healthy…
Enjoy Every Sandwich
Fot the love of all that is Holy!!
Can we talk about AU football?? Can we talk about possibly being SEC Champs…National Champs?? PLEASE!! WDE!!
"The spirit of the Auburn family is a magical, mystical thing. It defies explanation. It transcends wins and losses on a football field. It imprints itself on your character and can never be extinguished. Being an Auburn fan defines part of who and what you are..."

Great read Acid.....
you make several points that I have been hammering on with my bammer brother….the most obvious is that AU spotted the Yardbirds two TD’s with turnovers giving them a short field. And I don’t think doubling up Jeffrey is the answer……I think it’s stuffing Lattimore for less than 40 yards again and forcing the “Ole Ball Coach” to be one dimensional again so we can pound on Garcia some more. A steady diet of Fairly in Garcia’s face will be enough to rattle him into making some mistakes and as long as we don’t turn the ball over Cackalacky can’t keep up…..It’s roast chicken for supper folks.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
can't believe I won't be able to watch the game
My daughter turns 4 on saturday and its at the same time as her party. I hope Nick Fairley works his magic on Stephen Garcia and our linebackers contain Lattimore. My head tells me there’s no way they outscore us and I can’t believe anybody is picking the Gamecocks in this game. No way our team overlooks this one. I wonder if Dyer is going to get a lot of carries this time.
Congrats on 4 years!!!
Very exciting stuff.
You can always DVR it OR wait for the replay. You will have to put yourself in a bubble so that you won’t ruin the surprise for yourself.
Hope that you have a great day!

reschedule???
Had a friend get engaged at the beginning of the season and they threw out a couple of projected dates, including Dec 4th. I let them know that the SEC Championship Game was that day, and not that i was predicting an Auburn spot, I just wanted them to know that in the event that Auburn was playing, i would not be able to attend their wedding.
They’re getting married in February…
All I’m saying is, it’s a 4 year old birthday party, i’d call timeout and punt!
WAR EAGLE!!!
auconyers
Oh, I don't know...
……Have the party during Auburn football, and you might not have as many folks show up.
……I remember my son’s 4th. We had it on a Friday afternoon at the playground “fun-tube” place called “Jammin’ Gym.” Every relative, friend, preschool classmate, and basically everyone we KNEW showed up at that thing and crammed the building. All the adults were drinking beer, and I think we went though something like 20 large pizzas. That party ended up costing something like $700!
……I say have it during the game, and keep the cost down! DVR the game.
I live in washington state
so nobody here cares a thing about the game. We’re going to be in a restaurant for probably the first half, so there’s an off chance I might get to see some of it. Then we’re going to see “Tangled” the new animated Rapunzel movie. I might sneak out if there’s somewhere close to watch it.
12-0 is awesone
…13-0 is great…14-0… the best, and I thought we would only win eight games this year. Even if we pulled a Bama what a facinating year for the Tigers. War Eagle!!
