BCS Publicity is Worth Millions
Win or lose the BCS National Championship, Auburn can already claim victory on one front - publicity. It's impossible to turn on any of the ESPN channels for more than five minutes without hearing Auburn's name mentioned. The publicity Auburn is gaining from its appearance in the championship game has to be valued in the tens of millions of dollars.
It will be interesting to see what impact the success of the football program has on other parts of the university. I remember reading a story on Georgia Tech following its national title in 1990. The school saw student applications skyrocket in the year after it was crowned champion.
I can only imagine the impact Auburn will see in the age of wall-to-wall television coverage and the BCS. I wonder if this year's success will expedite Auburn's plans to add seats at Jordan-Hare Stadium...
For all the talk about position matchups between Auburn and Oregon, the game will likely come down to preparation. Auburn returned to practice Saturday for the first time in two weeks. Oregon started back a week earlier.
Quarterback Cam Newton said he could tell a difference. "I felt rusty," he said. "Everybody did. We looked like we didn't play football in two weeks, but that's normal. We need to have a better practice tomorrow."
How both teams handle the distractions of post-season award banquets, Christmas and travel logistics will go a long way in determining the winner on the second Monday in January.
Auburn is dealing with more outside distractions than Oregon. In addition to Cam Newton's appearances in Orlando and his three-day Heisman media run in New York, Auburn coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn have also been busy flying around the country accepting awards.
Throw in Malzahn's time consuming negotiations with Vanderbilt and Auburn officials about a contract extension, and you easily see why both players and coaches are glad to be back on the practice field.
The team is scheduled to leave Auburn on January 3rd and spend an entire week in Glendale. This will help in adjusting to the time change. You have to believe Chizik has the advantage in preparation over Oregon's Chip Kelly because he's been in this environment once before.
Chizik served as defensive coordinator on Mack Brown's staff in 2005 when the Longhorns defeated USC in Pasadena. You can bet he's taken a look back at what worked for them...
We knew it was coming, but it was still sad to hear that safety Aairon Savage's career is over. After breaking a bone in his ankle during the Arkansas contest, Savage underwent surgery and set the Iron Bowl as his target date to return. It was not meant to be. Chizik confirmed over the weekend that the sixth-year senior's playing days are done.
"It doesn't look like that's going to be a possibility right now," Chizik said. "Aairon's really doing a great job being around on our team as a leader and really almost taking on a coaching role for us."
He plans to pursue coaching after Auburn. We wish him the best...
Besides resuming practice over the weekend, Auburn hosted one of its most critical recruiting weekends. Coaches welcomed a total of 11 official and two unofficial visitors to campus Friday night.
The two unofficial visitors were four-star Auburn commitment Kiehl Frazier of Shiloh Christian in Springdale, Ark, and junior quarterback KeDarius Humphries from Sidney Lanier in Montgomery.
The highly regarded group included three running backs headlined by four-star back Savon Huggins from Jersey City, NJ. Also in attendance was four-star back Jeremy Hill from Baton Rouge, La, and Marlin Lane from Daytona Beach, Fla.
Another big Auburn target, five-star offensive tackle Christian Westerman traveled in from Chandler, Arizona. It was a good time to visit; the recruits were guests at Friday's awards banquet and then visited practice the following day...
Finally, I want to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas. I hope the season brings you all you have asked for and more. War Eagle and God Bless!

Got to love that Chizik and Auburn....
are supportive of all players, whether they make it through the season, or not.
I would really like to see a Marketing persons breakdown and ideas on the value, you bring up an excellent point. Money wise it’s a bonanza, recruiting wise, it’s the proverbial Gold Mine that we discovered right here on our own land!

Regardless of when we started practices
both teams are only allowed a certain number of them, so we will get the same amount of work in. Having a coach that has been there before and an OC that prepares so well with extra time is going to be huge! I really hope CGC gives as much tactical help to CTR as possible prepping for Oregon’s offense. They are going to be tough to stop consistently. As quickly as they can score, I’m not sure we can afford to wait for halftime adjustments against them. The upside is, in all honesty, I can’t see their defense holding Auburn under 35-38 points and I would not be shocked if we scored 50+ at all. We will likely get 12-16 possessions with their offensive pace. Scoring on 50-60% of those possessions would net around 50 points.
Can’t wait for the game!!!!!
WDE!!!!
I like your analysis Dzer13.

While we are all disapointed for Aairon ...
… and would like to see his talents available for the NCG, I am glad that his long Auburn journey (since Gene Chizik signed him out of high school 6 yrs ago) will end with him having been a part of this championship season. He palyed this year and he has earned the right to wear the rings.

Good Luck Aairon Savage and War Damn Eagle.....

Auburn is dealing with more outside distractions than Oregon?
Chip Kelly has been doing a bit of travelling, too. He was in both Orlando and NY, along with James. And recruiting in FLA, TX among other eastern-ish states.
Those are much longer trips than your boys had to take. Just sayin.

Much ado about nothing...
Award season is not a distraction…its a break from the grind of the season. You get to sit back and relish your accomplishments before getting back to work. Recharge your batteries as well as get some overdue respect and attention for the hard work you already have put in. That alone can give you the enerygy you need to get back into preparation. Once you hit Glendale, you most likely are running on adrenalin the rest of the way. Since Coach Chizik has been there before he will be able to handle it better but its going to be his team this time, which is always different.
Both teams still have three weeks to put together a game plan and find faults and weakeness on their own team as well as their opponent. When you are used to doing that every week, having an extra 2 weeks is almost TOO much time. All this time is the great equalizer and really showcases the abilities of the coaches to gameplan and scheme, to come up with something that the opponent isn’t expecting or hasn’t seen. This is why Boise St. is able to play with the big boys in the bowl season. Its also why a gimmick attack, like Ga Techs triple option playbook gets exposed. In the bowl season you have to be able to execute the things you do well and find some ways to offset the things you don’t do well.
I look for our defense to be vastly improved with the added time to prepare, especially with Coach Chiziks imput. Oregon, will get their points but they won’t be able to just run the ball, they will have to do it via the pass and I think we will have some surprises waiting for them. They will definitely have some surprises ready for us as well, but the challenge they have is stopping Cam with an smaller defense which will almost be impossible. They will most likely zone bliz from a lot of angles to keep Cam’s head on a swivel but since we always run from the gun, its impact will be lessened. They will try to make Cam make quick decisions and hope he makes a mistake….something that really hasn’t happened since early in the year. It will be a great chess match, but I like our chances.
Good Luck Aairon, you are an Auburn man through and through, you will have much success in your life because you know how to overcome adversity and succeed.
