I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas!
(AP Photo/Dave Martin)
War Eagle, everybody! It's Christmas Eve-Eve, but not even the season can take our minds off our number one-ranked Auburn Tigers! Thus far, this year's Tiger performance on the football field has made for a yule-time season like no other. There's always football talk at Christmas parties, but most of us have never experienced it while being ranked at the top! Just think about that. It's been 53 long years since Auburn fans spent Christmas ranked number one!
The amount of vitriol from the other half of the state (East Mississippi/UAT) continues to surprise me, although perhaps it shouldn't. The last two Christmas seasons I've shook hands with red-shirted folks, complimented them on fine seasons, and wished them luck against Utah and Texas. I must admit, I've gotten a very few similar sentiments from Bama friends. From the mouths of most Bama folks though, it's been, "Y'all are cheaters!" "Death Penalty," and the ever-popular "Y'all are gonna suck next year!" OK, maybe I've brought a little bit of this on myself, since I ditched my usual green and red Christmas attire for an orange and blue theme this year. But seriously, folks:
If a merchant out there had been selling orange and blue AU-emblazoned Texas gear last year, he'd have gone broke. Makes me want to play them and whip their tails again! Hey guys, you didn't hear "Jailhouse Rock" on the Auburn P.A. Last season when Ingram was winning the Heisman. Get a clue!
Auburn will finish the season with one of their highest rankings ever, win or lose in Glendale. The Tigers have finished the season ranked in the AP top 5 only 7 times prior to this season. Those were in 1957 (1st), 1958 (4th), 1963 (5th), 1972 (5th), 1983 (3rd), 1993 (4th), and 2004 (2nd). Auburn won the SEC title only 3 times in those seven seasons. Auburn has been ranked in the final AP poll a total of 34 times in 74 years. This year will mark Auburn's 35th finish in the AP poll.
If I were a Tide fan, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the Tigers to fail in 2011. Yes, Auburn loses a lot of seniors, and faces a more difficult schedule. However we'll get a lot of those champions back. These are guys who know how to win! Quite a few of our heralded freshmen this year spent the season on special teams or redshirted. Those who expect Auburn to be talent-poor next season are misinformed.
Make no mistake, the possible loss of the nation's best two players, Cameron Newton and Nick Fairley will be big. I think Nick Fairley has to think of his family and enter the NFL draft. I don't think another year will push his value any higher, and at defensive tackle, you're one chop-block away from ruin. Newton is a different story, however. I think he could use another year as a starting SEC quarterback. For much of the year, we used him as a Tebow-style battering ram with the occasional play-action pass. Had great success, but that's not really what NFL scouts look for. Only in the past few games has Cam really started developing as a passer. Those reads, releases and windows are what concern the pros. I think Cam could enormously help his draft stock with another year.
We'll lose Fairley, Antoine Carter, Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens out of the front seven, but the cupboard is hardly bare. There's a lot of young talent that should improve drastically with a year of Coach Yox's workouts. These guys include Jeffery Whitaker, Kenneth Carter, Corey Lemonier, Craig Sanders, Jessel Curry, Jake Holland and LaDarius Owens. Eltoro Freeman and Darren Bates return, too. The secondary has help on the way including rising star Demetruce McNeal, and incoming freshman Jonathan Rose. Rose is said to be a dominating DB in the mold of Carlos Rogers.
I think everyone wonders what the offensive line will look like without Ziemba, Issom, Pugh and Berry. That foursome has been the rock through good, bad and ugly the past four whirlwind seasons. Here again, though, the idea that Auburn will have a bad O-line in 2011 is garbage. At tackle, we'll have a competition including Brandon Moseley, A. J. Green and John Sullen. There's a good bit of starting experience there, and all will be talented upperclassmen with good size and strength. The loser in that competition will probably take a starting guard slot. Center Blake Burgess draws rave reviews in the practice notes. I think we'll be better than folks think on the line next season.
Most of our skill position guys return, and we've got lots of 'em. We lose Kodi Burns, Terrell Zachary and Mario Fannin. There's leadership and ability lost there, but we've got guys like Trovon Reed, Shaun Kitchens and Antonio Goodwin who haven't really been used, yet. Darvin Adams may go pro, but I'd have to think he'd face a free-agent deal. There are a LOT of really good receivers coming out of college this year.
Even without Cameron Newton, the Auburn offense under Gus Malzhan will be successful. I've been impressed with what I've seen of Barrett Trotter. He hasn't had a bad series all season. He's played in six games, has no turnovers, a 13.6 yards per rush average, and has a healthy 7.1 yards per pass on 67 percent completions. Trotter has a great release on the ball.
It's Christmas time, folks! The hay's in the barn, and we Auburn fans will be in party mode for the next three weeks! I'll have to say, being ranked number one in the nation is the best Christmas present EVER!

Good read Acid.
I have to keep telling myself there are good Bama fans out there, classy people that love their school but know how to behave. But every where I look and every one of them that I run in to says different. I would like to think they are out there and maybe they are just too imtimidated by the overwhelming majority of mullets to do the right thing. Or maybe they are just people that would not join in the typical Bama trashing of a rival, but secretly get pleasure out of the fact that others do.
I have seen the good and the bad fan...
Unfortunately, on both sides of the state. I saw a guy yesterday with bangs to his eye brows, and the length in the back was to his waist. He was wearing a Bama shirt, and when he saw my Auburn hat, he made a face that let me know he was disgusted.
But a good friend of mine had to apologize to a lady for what one supposed Auburn fan said to her and her daughter because they were wearing hounds tooth hats. He of course let them know most Auburn people do not act like that.
So, the bandwagon starts to fill, and sometimes we pick up the garbage when that happens.
My good friends that are Bama fans want Auburn to win it all. One even suggested that we swap the Heisman, and Crystal back and forth every other year, to keep it in the State. I can’t say that’s a bad idea. It keeps us ahead in the Heisman count, and them ahead in the MNC count.
Enjoyed the read Acid, and you are 100% correct, it’s a good feeling being ranked #1, and it’s great to be an Auburn Tiger!

Great article.
Thanks Acid for this Christmas present of an article this morning. I love the TP White Christmas picture. Can you imagine what Toomers might look like If Auburn wins January 10th?
I gave up a long time ago trying to understand the delusional (“that’s my toy & you can’t have it”) Bama fan base. They are jealous of everyone’s success and especially Auburn’s. They are for the most part like a little child who must have all the attention; or a teenage girl that must be the queen of her peer group and look out if another girl gets any type of recognition. I looked up the word delusional the other day and read the following. “See Alabama fan.” Enough said.
I agree with your analysis on Auburn’s position next year. While we may not repeat as SEC Champs (very few do and even fewer repeat playing for a NC) we should be in a good position to field a good team with or without Cam. If Malzahn could work magic with Chris Todd just think what he could do with Barrett Trotter.
I was particularly encouraged by your projection of next year’s offensive line and I think Grimes will do a good job coaching them up.
The main thing I will be looking for on defense is for a leader to step up and fill Josh Bynes shoes. The guy is a beast but he is also one heck of a leader.
Finally, I’ve heard recently that Ladarious Phllips may be moved or tried out on defense. Have you or anyone else picked up anything to that rumor?

In fact Rocker said "He's the kind of player that can play both ways"...
Coming from Coach Rock, that is some high praise. He also tempered that with, “He’s still got a long ways to go”.
I would love to see LP blow up next year(play on words there, you like?)

Great read Acid....
looking forward to the title game and the Crystal ball coming home to Auburn. That is the only Christmas present I want.
As for next year I believe good coaching, the talent returning and another good recruiting class will make us more competitive than most outsiders think. That said, I would be happy at a 9-3 follow-up to this year.

Bama Fan Support
Naturally we would rather see Bama in the Natty but there are many Bama fans who will be rooting for the Auburn team to keep up the SEC reputation, getting beat but the Ducks would be a shame.
I think you are whistling in the dark about Newton staying another year. He will go in the top 10 this year, which means a years delay could result in a $10 – 15 million loss in his career.
It's the time of year...
….where I first start really watching the NFL, and I’ve had a heavy dose of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, etc. the last couple of weekends. Earlier in the fall, I usually spent my Sunday afternoons on the tennis courts. But lately it’s been in the 20s on Sunday, and there’s pro ball on.
……I figured before the season started that Cam would be like other “athlete” quarterbacks. Capable of throwing long, breaking off big runs, but typically that sort of player is scattershot at best throwing the ball. Cam had his difficulties early on, but he’s shown dramatic improvement week after week. Where does he plateau? We’ve seen no sign of that yet!
…..As good as he is, Cam’s not at that All-Pro level. Not like what I’ve seen from the good ones, like Rothlisberger. If he takes his bonus and signs, he’s an instant millionaire. He’s also going to ride the pine, probably on a bad team. When he gets his chance, he’ll get thrown into the fire in the middle of the season with little preparation. You’ve got to consider whether he’ll continue to improve toting a clipboard for weeks, then being thrown to the wolves. Another year to tune up on the SEC will likely continue to elevate his game.
…..Is Cam looking to cash out? Or does he want to become one of the greatest ever? I’m starting to think he has that kind of potential. What’s his best road to that goal? I think staying in school another year is the answer, but that’s just my opinion.
I agree,
and thanks for the enjoyable read Acid.

How would Auburn losing to Oregon be a shame?
It’s 2 great teams playing for a title. It’s not like we’re UConn and Auburn is Oklahoma or something.
"(Kelly's) got a veteran team that is the favorite to win the Pac-10. His choice of Thomas reflects only one belief: He’s our best QB today."-Ted Miller....I'd say Chip made an alright decision.

A little sensitive there...
I think it’s would be a shame for them to see an SEC team lose. Just like it would be a shame for Pac – 10 fans to see Stanford lose to Vatech even though the former is a good team.

Because auburn would lose...
Which is always a shame. I have no hate for you duckers, but any au loss is a shame.
That being said good luck to us both.

Oh, I have to agree.
…..As far as I’m concerned, we’ve been “in the bonus” ever since the first quarter of the Iron Bowl! It’s all gravy, unless we get embarrassed in Arizona. I think we’ll play Auburn football, though!
Auburn Buttons
Here is a good last minute Christmas gift idea for Auburn Fans – gameday spirit buttons @ AuburnButtons.com. It’s the only site where Auburn fans can buy 2010 Auburn Gameday Spirit Buttons, a limited number of which are distributed on campus (Its a great holiday gift or keepsake for our undefeated season!)
I am not worried either
A season like this is probably out of the question but….I think Dyer puts up All American type stats, McCaleb gets around 700 yds, Trotter runs a very effecient offense, our receivers who are good now get better and our defense gets better overall. 10-2 or 11-1 would not surprise me at all. Dream on uat, we are BACK!!
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
One more item to mention on Cam...
It is my opinion, that Nike will create a package for Cameron on the range of Mchael Jordan, or Tiger Woods. He will be very rich whether or not there is a lockout in the NFL next season.
Fairley will not get that chance, just sayin….
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
Under Armour could make Fairley a helluva deal too
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
Sadly
Next year will be a rebuilding year of sorts, you don’t just wave the wand and have a game ready QB, no Trotter needs a little more time to develop, and next years schedule is TOUGH. 5 road trips, one is to the Gold and Purple Death Vally, the other to the Orange and Purple DV. I am not expecting anything better then 9-3. Now if Cam returns…that is a whole other story, if both return…thats a REALLY different story…
Haters can hate, but Cam will still parcipate!

War Eagle Acid!
Thank you for terrific coverage of Auburn Football 2010! I completely agree – it is the best Christmas present ever. Earlier in the season, a friend in Birmingham gave our son a football signed by Chizik, and he and his family sent another present in the mail to my son, and it looks like another football – perhaps Cam signed it? We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to unwrap it. As for 2011, I believe Malzon is an offensive machine, and will be able to work with whatever players he’s handed. Trotter has looked good, but has played sparingly. As for the Tide fans, I find that the ones who never attended UAT are the worst. And living up in Chicago, these Big Ten fans hate every SEC team. I’ve proudly flown my Auburn flag for the past eight years, but haven’t been prouder than this year. War Eagle and Merry Christmas all!
Way to represent the family...
all the way up there in Chi-town.

…..Appreciate the support! War Eagle!
Thanks for the great article Acid...Hope all that white TP is flying January 10th!!!
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.
