According to ComcastSportsNet Washington, Jones is one of a handful of candidates who have interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Maryland. Also interviewed, the website reports, are Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and ex-Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach.

We don't need this crap...

So close before kickoff. I don’t see them paying off Malzhan’s contract and then hiring him on as well. He makes $1.3 million a year at Auburn. It’s hard to see Maryland compete with something like that and in addition pay extra after that.

by Sparkey on Dec 28, 2010 6:50 PM CST reply actions

Contact does make sense....

being interviewed does not…..unless he interviewed during Christmas break from practice and I just don’t see that happening. He may interview after the NC game but Maryland is a coaching graveyard only slightly better than Vandy…..It also seems to me that Ralph Freidjen (sp?) was as good a coach as Maryland could hope for and he did more for the program than anybody else in the last couple of decades……reminds me of Ole Miss and David Cutcliffe, Maryland forgetting who they are.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

by Todd92 on Dec 28, 2010 6:54 PM CST reply actions

I just don't see how they would be willing to pay that kind of money...

I mean wouldn’t they have to pay off his contract for the next three years and then pay him on top of that? Isn’t that a bit much for someone that has yet to head coach in major college football?

by Sparkey on Dec 28, 2010 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

I am not sure of Malzahn's buyout...

but I would be surprised if it’s more than half of one years salary which right now bout be about 650K……that’s about all you can expect and even if it’s a full years salary I don’t think Maryland would have a hard time ponying up.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

by Todd92 on Dec 28, 2010 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know about the buyout clause in Malzahn's contract, or if there is one...

I would be disappointed if Malzahn actually went there and met with them and Chizik didn’t know about it. But this is the same way rumors started about other things concerning Auburn, and they were not true, so let’s wait and see.
I just wanted all of you to know what I found out tonight.

I appreciate the update

Well, they may have simply called him. That’s not that crazy and Malzahn might not have even mentioned it. This just pisses me off as it’s another distraction right before the big game. This time, it’s not about the players but rather about Malzahn. He’s the genius behind our offense. I am just pissed off about this, Maryland could have the decency to wait after the national championship.

I live in Maryland in the DC area...

um is not a classy school and they really do care about AU. Look they just fired a head coach who was an alumni with a very good record including 7 bowl games in 10 years.

That said remember that is was a maryland based source that said Gus had actually accepted the vandy job, so I am not sure how much stock to put in it at this point.

blamed the current staff for lack of attendance at the games. You would not believe how pathetic their student fan base is. we are talking about a school of 30000 that has trouble filling up the student section for most home games. Stadium sits less than 70,000

What do Auburn and Texas Tech have in common?

They’re both Under Armour schools, a company that was created by Kevin Plank, who is a former Maryland football player, and I’m sure theres nothing that he’d love more than to make Maryland football relevant. Football has always played second-fiddle to basketball in College Park, so I’m guessing that a lot of our money is coming from Kevin Plank.

Furthermore, its possible that Maryland hasn’t contacted Auburn or Malzahn personally about the job. Just like when it was said that Maryland hasn’t contacted Mike Leach, it was true and that it probably was Kevin Plank, who knew Mike Leach from when Texas Tech became an Under Armor school, talking with him. Whether or not UMD’s AD was interested in Mike Leach, he’ going to be a candidate if one of the school’s wealthiest boosters wants him to be. Its possible that the same thing has happened with Gus, Kevin probably has been seeing if there is any interest in the job.

And @Todd92, Maryland is just as much a coaching graveyard as it is a coaching cradle. Ralph Friedgen got his head coaching start at Maryland, so in relation to coaching, Ralph was “born” in College Park and had 3 great seasons to start, and has probably “died” at the University of Maryland with the last 7 being mediocre and sporadic.

by testudo13 on Dec 28, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

I am not trying to hurt anyone's feelings....

but prior to Ralph exactly who had three great season’s in modern history at Maryland? Furthermore who was a Head Coach that went on to be a head coach elsewhere after coaching a UM? Calling Maryland a Coaching Cradle is kind of goofy…..either you are a destination job (which Maryland is anything but), a stepping stone job (haven’t seen anyone moving through Maryland to get a destination job), or you’re a dead end (a.k.a “coaching graveyard”….hmm sounds about right for the Terps). Maryland is firing one of the few coaches that could be successful by Marylands standards that would consider Maryland a “last stop”….that is why Maryland is forgetting that they are Maryland much like Ole Miss forgot who they were with Cutcliffe. I have no ill will towards Maryland….to tell the truth I started paying more attention to them when Friedgen was hired and have always thought that he did more with less and thats exactly what it takes to win at Maryland.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

No I remember that really well...

We can’t afford to be without both Blanc and T-Zach against Oregon. Not saying this happened already, I’m just saying that’s two huge losses and we’re not even discussing how things are with Malzahn when we just bring up those two. The reason why I asked about an “I” is because I know it’s not an F. You have anywhere between 6 months to a year to complete the “I” depending on the institution. My institution gives you about a year to complete the “I” but I don’t know how it works with NCAA athletes.

by Sparkey on Dec 28, 2010 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

The rumor...

is that Zachery dropped a class which left him with 5 hours. To be a graduate student and play in the NCAA you have to complete and pass 6 graduate hours successfully. It’s just a rumor, though and I hate putting one out on this website like that. I just thought I’d mention it, but really we know nothing as of right now. How come our guys can’t just be suspended next season lol?

by Sparkey on Dec 28, 2010 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Right...

and I did say it’s just a rumor and we know nothing at this point really. I just find it really odd that a kid who had his stuff together enough for four years and gets a degree early all of a sudden doesn’t do what he’s supposed to do to keep his eligibility. Nobody else seems to think that’s odd, but I find it crazy personally.

Whoa folks, simmer down

If Leach and Gus really have been interviewed the obvious choice is Leach. He already has head coacn exp. I don’t understand how Gus made the time for a trip to Maryland or if they came to him but hey, Leach, despite the uproar, is the logical choice. Gus stays one more year and then names his price and school. Especially if he takes another offense and another quarterback and makes them better.

I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves

by myauburn on Dec 28, 2010 8:07 PM CST reply actions

I personally agree...

I think Leach will go to Maryland and he’s a perfect fit out there. They need a spark of energy and somebody that can sell tickets. Leach is a bolt of lightning and his offense is awesome to watch and he’ll do great in that area with recruiting. I don’t like the timing of the thing, but I think Leach goes to Maryland personally.

Jay Coulter

was quoted in an article on Fox Sports today.

http://network.yardbarker.com/college_football/article_external/fretting_line_auburn_players_facing_academic_issues/3860900

The article says nothing, the title has a question mark at the end of it, which, these days, is newspeak for “not real news.” I only post it because it speaks volumes about how desperate news agencies are to be the first to release a story. But bet everything that if someone is ineligible, there’ll be plenty of print on it since we have become America’s team they love to hate.

normally, I am not on this time of night, but I was blogging about taking my son to his first Coyote basketball game. Very exciting stuff!

IMO (which might be worth a box of fake mashed potatoes), the Terps want Leach. They would love them some Leach. Reaching out to Malzahn might just be due diligence or trying to go for the sexy. Even if Malzahn did go to interview, I don’t see him taking the job. He has the luxury of waiting for a really great fit. I don’t see Maryland being that fit.

As long as all the kids are practicing, I am not going to get stressed about eligibility issues. This coaching staff has it all under control.
