Utah to the Pac-10?

JPW is an Atlanta Falcon now, so leave him alone.
A Salt Lake City TV station is speculating that sources may be indicating that Utah could possibly be invited to join the PAC-10 at some point in the near future, and that Colorado might defect from the Big 12 as well. Again, this is pure speculation, but what else do we have to hold onto during the dead season between NSD and spring drills? Now much of this folly hinges on anticipated moves that a Big 10 expansion might bring, so keep that in mind. Should the Big Ten go to divisional play, that would leave the PAC and the Big East as the conferences left out in the cold, and we know that the traditional Rose Bowl participants are monkey see, monkey do.
The PAC's TV contract is expiring soon and the gold standard now is to have a conference championship game, especially if you ever hope to attract SEC-like money. But why let the Big Ten choose first? With only three independents out there and little chance of landing Notre Dame, the prime reason might be that the ripple effect will only be a east-coast, west-coast thing. Poaching teams from another conference is going to be like a game of musical chairs, but in the end, smaller teams may get a seat at the adult table of established conferences and larger teams may scramble to moving on up to the east side..
The Mountain West may lose Utah, but would it pick up another team, merge back into the WAC, or fold, with members falling where they may? What about MWC stablemate BYU? Why wouldn't the PAC look to draft BYU instead of poaching Colorado from the Big 12? Seems that BYU doesn't play any sporting events on Sundays, for religious reasons, and the PAC-10 homey don't play dat. Alas, greener pastures with the Denver TV market might be in the sites of new commissioner Larry Scott. If Colorado did make the jump, and being landlocked by oh, say 1000 miles, could a conference name change be forthcoming? Maybe The Big PAC-12 with Ocean Front?
And why no respect for the Big 12? Seemingly, they're mentioned more often for losing members than the Democratic National Convention. Missouri to the Big 10(11)12)? Now Colorado to the PAC? Someone check the seams from when they welded those guys together from the old Big 8 and Southwest conferences. Does no one like playing with those Texas boys besides Arkansas? Regardless, teams must give at least one year's notice of departure, so for football, that means if they declared by sometime this summer, they wouldn't actually play in the new conference until the 2011 season.
And how'd you like to be the scheduler for that?

That is just weird...
Obviously, I hold Utah near and dear to the heart because of that special night in New Orleans a little more than a year ago, I just don’t see the appeal. I’d go after Boise State before Utah. Then again, I’m just thinking football. I’m sure there’s a lot more to it.
I'm wearing this Auburn shirt because I went to Auburn. You are wearing that Alabama shirt because you went to Walmart.
Really??
Boise over Utah?? The Utes are on par with Boise state in terms of BCS wins also Utah is more respected since they play tougher opponents then the WAC and in non-conference play by continually getting big schools on the schedule.
Utah has a better attendance mark, tv market is better, plus the biggie is the research school that Utah is and matches up better to the Pac-10 then Boise
" Utah is more respected "... Really ? ?
Probably in the mind of Ute fans and maybe should be everywhere esle. But outside of the Mountain West area Boise State has a more nationally recognizeable bran. And a more marketable T V bran name is a major consideration to conference expansion in order to bring money into the conference.
I think the best 2 teams for the PAC to take would be Utah and Boise State. However, I’m not entirely sure money would necessarily be their deciding factor. They may not want 2 good teams teams that challenge the 2 teams at the top so quickly. So if they expanded I believe they might invite only one good team and then take one so so team.

What does their choice of fiber rich cereal have to do with anything?
heheheh……personally I like the brand Raison Bran with Kashi taking a close second.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
That's funny Todd, thanks for ...
correcting me. Most of my mistakes are due to poor eyesight and poor proof reading. However I think this one has more to do with me being an Old guy that has to eat BRAN cereal everyday in order to be a REGULAR Old Guy.

Incontinence
too?
:-D
How exactly do you out-recruit the national champions in their own back yard AND cost-to-coast? (Fruedian slip intended)

Plumbing works good so far, maybe too good at night, but that's another story.

I am a man who loves his bran......
go ahead pull my finger……I dare you.

It might be just message board chatter...
….but I think SEC dominance of the BCS title game is having an effect. Interestingly, the SEC has 8 national titles in the past two decades. The Big 12 (Big-8/Southwest) has 6. No one else is close. I can’t imagine teams wanting to leave the Big 12 for the crappy west coast TV packages.
The choice is not coming any time soon
But the expansion talk is real and Utah and Colorado are the logical choices that fit the Pac-10 life style.
Will
be the official reason. But the no-joy-on-Sunday thing will be the real reason, not to mention the fallacy of doubling down on the Utah TV market.
For myself, and from a competitive perspective, I would go after Boise and the Utes. They’re the cream that has risen to the top of the western mid-majors. If nay, why not another California school? Geography has to play a part at some point…

The other California schools: San Jose St, Fresno St, and San Diego St don’t add new television markets. The Pac-10 game of the week is still aired in these locations, thus the fallacy of doubling down appears once more.
Fair point
But I hear that Texas is listening to offers these days…

BWAH hahaha
cheap shot on the picture – luckily the BCS NC takes the sting off it
But I’ve always thought the Utes should campaign for Pac – 10 membership and Boise as well (in my dreams where the Pac – 10 became a meaningful conference with two teams other than USC that people cared about)
I would love to see Utah in the BCS, and I can tell you from personal fragmented memory that their fans are football crazy and nice as hell (also they know how to spend money in New Orleans… just saying Barners)
January 7th, 2010: the day I went from being a delusional obnoxious Alabama fan to being an obnoxious Alabama fan
I agree J.D.....
Utah and BYU make more sense proximity wise and their progams are up to the task of challenging the PAC 10 from the get go. Boise is not capable of competing every week on that level…IMO. Colorado doesn’t make sense proximity wise and won’t be competitive in any BCS conference any time soon.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Your analogy makes the most sense

Who really cares ?
They will still be the “Weak” Pacific Conference. USC and ocassionally one other team are good, expand and it will be USC and ocassionally two other teams. PAC 10 is overrated every year.
Personally...
I think Boise St. is the best program of the choices honestly. Though none of them are close enough to the Pacific Ocean if you ask me, but you didn’t. Utah is okay and BYU does enjoy being overrated every year so they’d fit in the Pac 10 I think. Still, Boise would be the best I think.
The Pac-10 Won't Add Boise St.
The goal in expansion is increasing TV market, it has nothing to due with the quality of their football (which is good). Boise State has a small alumni base, and a non-existent tv market, and though they have some national prestige among college football’s faithful, the casual fan doesn’t recognize them. From a competitive stand point Boise State makes sense, from a TV standpoint they are a horrible choice. TV is the motivating reason for expansion.
Similar reasons dictate, Utah and BYU will not be added jointly. The goal is to expand the TV market, duplicating the TV market in Utah fails to adequately increase TV market to compensate for dividng TV revenues by two extra schools.
In my personal opinion, expansion is contingent on Colorado joining. Colorado might be interesting in leaving the Big-12 due to their uneven distribution of TV revenues. The current Big-12 system rewards the teams aired on TVs, therefore Texas and Oklahoma receive greater money than Colorado or Iowa State. Furthermore, when Colorado was good (oh so, long ago) they had significant recruiting ties to Southern California. The belief was playing in the Big-12 would open Texas for them, this has a little to limited success. Therefore, a switch to playing with the California schools might reopen the Southern California pipeline.
