Secret Confessions

Blind_side_medium
I'll always be a big Tommy Tuberville supporter.

Good Monday to you. Today I'm going to do something a little different. I got this idea from a thread on another Auburn message board. Its title, Secret Confessions fits perfectly; so we'll keep it the same here. Basically, it's a chance to share things we often think, but never say in regards to Auburn and college football.  I hope you'll join in.  Here goes my list...

  • I rarely pull for other SEC schools in bowl games unless it's Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Miss State or South Carolina. I just can't see any good in pulling for a competitor.
  • I still really like and respect Tommy Tuberville. I hope he's a huge success at Texas Tech. I don't understand why so many Auburn fans have turned against him.  You see it on message boards daily.
  • Pat Dye will always be my coach.
  • I'm really pulling for Derek Dooley at Tennessee. I know Vince Dooley will forever be associated with Georgia, but he's still an Auburn man and I wish his son the best.
  • I like Steve Spurrier now.  I hated him during the 1990's, but there's something about him losing consistently that makes me like him more today.
  • I'm still nostalgic about the 1980's. In my mind, those Dye coached teams will always be the best in Auburn history. I'm convinced the 1983 team could beat the 2004 undefeated team by a touchdown. It may not be close to true, but I believe it.
  • I still side with David Housel over the 2003 Jetgate incident. He made the wrong decision to get on the plane, but I completely understand why he did it. I worked with him while I was a student and know his character. There's more to the story than meets the eye.
  • Eight seasons later, I still miss Jim Fyffe. There's not a start to the season that I don't pause to think about him.
  • If Auburn's not playing in a BCS bowl, my favorite destination is the Chick-fil-A bowl in Atlanta. It has everything you could want - close proximity, indoors, good opponents and plenty to do in town.
  • I enjoy Auburn baseball more than Tiger basketball.  There's something unique and special about sitting at Plainsman Park on a spring afternoon.
  • I really wish they'd bring the orange facemasks back.
  • I don't trust SEC commissioner Mike Slive to protect Auburn's best interest.
  • For all my criticism of athletic director Jay Jacobs, the hiring of Gene Chizik was a masterstroke. He showed us all.
  • I still get chills when the Auburn band comes running out on the field for pregame festivities.
  • Tenda Chick is hands down the best restaurant in Auburn. Call me simple.
  • I miss J.F. Fingers.
  • I love Toomer's Drug, but I've had better lemonade.  Don't shoot me.
  • Tiger Rags has the best prices; J&M the friendliest staff; and Anders is just not the same since the family sold the store. Big Blue has potential, but they are ridiculously expensive - even by college bookstore standards.
  • Paul Ellen is the best radio studio host in America.
  • Ralph Jordan Jr. is the finest ambassador Auburn has at its disposal. It's a mystery why they don't use him more. Talk to him for five minutes and you'll feel like you've known him a lifetime.
  • I worry about the trees at Toomer's Corner. I hope they are around for my great-grandchildren.
  • Women just look better dressed in orange and blue.
  • Now that I'm in my forties, the coeds look more like young girls. How depressing.
  • I'm excited about the new basketball arena, but I really wished they'd spent that money on Jordan-Hare Stadium.  I'm just saying...
  • There's nothing better and more fun than a road win at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge - except of course, Bryant Denny Stadium.
  • I love seeing rednecks walk around in Alabama attire.  It makes my day.
  • I love those baby blue UCLA uniforms.
  • I loved Herschel Walker when I was a kid.
  • I really like listening to Verne Lundquist during CBS college football telecasts.
  • ESPN's Wendi Nix is really hot in those reading glasses. Call me old.
  • Phillip Marshall and Mark Murphy are my two favorite Auburn writers.
  • I still miss The Joe Cribb's Car Wash... the blog.
  • I don't understand people who like Stephen A. Smith.
  • I hated playing games at Legion Field, but I do miss the Tide-Tiger bar on game day.
  • I miss the stadium announcer saying, "Here come the Tigers" over the PA as the team takes the field.
  • I broke into Jordan-Hare Stadium with friends the night before graduation and had a 12-pack of Milwaukee's Best on the 50-yard line. To this day, it's the best beer I've ever had in my life.

I could go on for days.  It's your turn now...

Funny...
I broke into Jordan-Hare Stadium with friends the night before graduation and had a 12-pack of Milwaukee’s Best on the 50-yard line. To this day, it’s the best beer I’ve ever had in my life.

One Easter Sunday some buddies and I broke into Death Valley and played football for a few hours. We didn’t think much of it, and had a blast. About a month later, we read in the student newspaper that a couple of kids broke into the basketball arena and were caught playing basketball. Not causing trouble…just playing ball. They were expelled from school on the spot, no questions asked.

We didn’t even consider a second trip to Death Valley for our next pick-up football game. I still cringe at what would have happened had we gotten caught.

Im a pretty pathetic criminal myself

broke into Bryant Denny to get a piece of the old scoreboard after a long night of houndstooth

got caught – made fun of by police – made fun of by university – made fun of by friends

community service mandatory to be allowed to graduate – criminal record upgraded to hilarious

Jay....

I did the same thing in the eighties….with Kevin Porter, Brian Smith, Teapot Brown and two guys from australia that ended up sleeping on my couch for months. It was during the final spring quarter before the east upper deck was completed and opened the following season. We took a football and a cooler of beer in after closing down Darnell’s (I was a bartender there) and had a blast until someone had the great idea of lifting me onto the goal post and it made a huge tuning fork as it tilted and jarred to a halt…..we left the cooler, blanket, and football on the field and ran for the southwest corner of the stadium and the portal we had used getting in. We stood motionless in the stadium portal and listened thinking that surely a campus cop would be there soon. After a while we got up the nerve to go back and get the cooler and stuff and felt lucky to get out unscathed.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

I always thought i was a loaner in this regard…. Its a secret i have kept from my wife for years. At $4.50 a cup no less… Ridiculous.

Hating Lowder since 1993.

by pmikler on Mar 1, 2010 8:14 AM CST reply actions

I agree with most of it

And no, I don’t know why Auburn fans turned on Coach Tuberville, possibly the best coach we have had at Auburn. He was about fourth in winning percentage, but when you look at how he graduated players and faced an SEC that is probably tougher than it has ever been, he is definitely one of the best coaches in school history.

I do think something had to change, because of the poor atmosphere between the administration and the staff, but it doesn’t change his success. Who is the last coach to win like Tuberville did and not get us in trouble with the NCAA? Yes, there are a lot of fair weather Auburn fans out there, just like with Bama. It is a shame, but it is how the culture has changed.

Great Idea

Tommy Tuberville – I felt that he always represented Auburn well, but my respect for him has slipped a notch or two when I see the relentlessness that this coaching staff is made of. Although I hated to se Tuberville leave, it was was like a bad marrriage that was beyond repair, courtesy of Bobby Lowder and friends.

Bobby Lowder – needs to take his money (or what’s left of it) and leave. Auburn is way better off without him, even if it is without his money. He’s caused a lifetime of embarasment for the Auburn Family.

Pat Dye – a hell of a football coach whose accomplishments off the field are comparible to his accomplishments on the field.

David Housel – I’ve never doubted his love for Auburn, but his involvement in Jet Gate was just plain wrong and he should have known that.

Jim Fyffe was simply the best. I knew it then and I know it now. Somehow I just couldn’t help takeing him for granted.

I’ll neve forget my first Auburn Football game. AU vs. Ga. Tech (about 1971). Sullivan to Beasley. At the end of the game, I waited outside the locker room under the stadium and met Sullivan, Beasley, and Shug Jordan. Shook their hands and got their autographs. As a 10 year old kid, I knew that very day that I would end up at Auburn.

I’ll never forget my landlord and close friend at Auburn, Mr. Hyron Goolsby. He truly love Auburn Football and didn’t miss and Auburn Football game played anywhere for over 22 years until he was diagnosed with terminal cancer my last year at Auburn. Mr. Goolsby was like a second father to me, and there were some tough times that I might not have made it through without his guidance and support. I still love him and miss him very much.

I will never forget the morning of the 1995 Iron Bowl. Staying with the in-laws (not Bamers) in Tuscaloosa when my wife informed me that she was pregnant with our child. I just knew that there was no way that we would lose that game. It was close, but we did win it!

I miss Sani-Freeze.

I absolutely love the Supper Club. It’s well worth the hell that I catch from the wife when I go out and party with the guys at the club and arrive back at the hotel very late (or early the next morning).

I miss sneaking beer into the Friday midnight movies as well as the free movies at Langon Hall.

Toomer’s Lemonade is good but overrated.

It always brings a tear to my eye when the Auburn Band plays the Star Spangled Banner because I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to have been bornan American and have had the opportunity to have attended Auburn.

I absolutely love Auburn’s football uniforms and feel that any attempt to radically change them should be punishable by law.

I believe in Auburn and love it!!!

by 83Tiger on Mar 1, 2010 9:44 AM CST reply actions

Jay pretty much said it all, but here goes ...

83 Tiger I’m partial to reading your comments. I usually feel like amen ’ing what you think.

Like you I saw my 1st game at about 10 yrs old. It was a life impacting event. Au 21 – UGA 6 in Columbus, Ga. 1958.

It always brings tears to my eyes when the team takes the field as the Auburn band plays.

I could read or listen to David Housel tell Auburn stories all day long.

I don’t care what anyone says , I still like Housel’s story on comparing the Auburn – bama rivalry to the Battle of Britain.

I like Bramlett but there will never be a homer like Jim Fyffe.

I miss John Thrower of the Auburn Villager and of 99.3 FM.

Phllip Marshall and Jay Coulter are my favorite sports writters.

The top 4 events in my life deal with faith & family … # 5 was being at the first ever Iron Bowl on the Plains in ’89.

AU fans need to be grateful for what Tuberville did and move on … he has.

Tucker Frederickson was the greatest to ever play the game at Auburn.

I thought an AU football reality show was not a good idea…. now I like it, I love it, I can’t get enough of it.

I still carry a grudge about Miami backing into a National Championship over Auburn in 1983.

Shug Jordan will always be one of my heros but …

… like Jay, Pat Dye will always be my coach. If you lived thru the 5 – 19 bama domination years, you understand why.

Unlike most, I will miss Beard Eaves . I remember when she was young, beautiful, and exciting.

It is always special to be a thousand miles from Auburn and hear a family member’s greeting … " WAR EAGLE "

Amazing post!

…..The Tuberville bashing has gotten out of hand. There were things about Tub that irritated me, but that’s been true of every Auburn coach. I used to cuss some of the play calls during the Dye era, too! I’m trying to keep track of what Tub does, via the SB Nation blog “Double T Nation.”

……Best Toomer’s lemonade ever? During the 1980 heat wave. I was in summer school that year, and walked from Dillards at the mall, to Toomer’s corner when it was 106 degrees. I drank three lemonades at Toomers, and wow were they good! Of course, after that ordeal, I’d have probably enjoyed cold toilet water…

…..I’ll pull for any of the other SEC teams in bowl game. The league made Auburn look bad in 2004. Georgia struggled with a mediocre Wisconsin team, but won. UT did their part, blasting Franchione’s Aggies 38-7. Florida looked inept in a Peach Bowl loss to Miami. LSU gave up a 58-yard TD pass on the last play of the game to lose the Cap One to Iowa. Bama lost to Minnesota in Nashville. Auburn went into the Sugar Bowl and the SEC had a 2-3 record. USA today columnists were calling the SEC and the ACC the worst of the BCS conferences. No, the SEC teams need to win their bowl games. When a team like South Carolina stinks up Legion Field like they did this past season, it makes us all look bad.

……I miss Jim Fyffe, too. But Stan and Rod are pretty good. Stan’s the best color man ever. Even better than Gusty Yearout. The big knock on the Auburn ISP network is that they have an absolutely ridiculous delay on road games. You can’t listen to ’em a play behind the TV!

…..I hated Herschel Walker. I was in the stands in the Auburn band in 1980, watching him run all over our defense. Hated him! Hated Georgia! The only thing good Herschel ever did was get traded to Minnesota for 3 first round draft picks plus five other players. That Jimmy Johnson Cowboy 3-time super bowl champion team was built off the Herschel trade. That, and Herschel leaving Georgia early. He was one of the pioneers. The NFL wouldn’t take him, but Donald Trump and the USFL New Jersey Generals did. Auburn beat UGA in Athens 13-7 in 1983, to clinch the SEC title. Would we have won against a senior Walker? No telling. Would have been tough!

…..Car Wash writer Jerry Hinnen is still cranking out the great stuff, over at the War Eagle Reader. Outstanding stuff, way more readable font and layout! Those all-black blogs with white text make my eyes hurt…

……Count me among the moronic students who broke into the football stadium. I did it around 1981 or so, when they were building the first upper deck. We climbed the fence with a twelve pack of Miller longnecks. At least a dozen other students had the same idea on a mild Saturday night after midterms. We were stumbling around the construction area, and Campus Security surrounded the stadium and started rounding folks up. My roommate and I climbed into a lumber pile under a tarp, burrowed WAY down in the wood, and lay there till about 4 AM. The worst part was a beer-bloated bladder about to burst!

…..Finally, I decided we had a better chance of sneaking out while it was still dark. There were still some security folks there with flashlights, mostly on the concourse. We tiptoed down from the old pressbox area to the middle level of the seats, then crawled all the way around the south end zone on the concrete, till we were on the west side, and the light from Haley Center was shadowed. We got nearly to the north end zone before we dared go farther down. My idea was to go out the north side, because if we were spotted, we could run through the Pharmacy Building/Mag Dorm area and probably lose the pursuit. West was the Beave and nothing but parking lots, south was the baseball area and a lot of open grass, and east was the big open field south of Haley Center with the eagle cage. No, north was the only way to go.

……We got through the concourse, but got spotted going over the fence. I’ve never run so fast! When we made it across West Magnolia avenue and past the old Godfather’s Pizza place, we darted into some shrubbery and hid till dawn. I figure the campus police gave it up before we even crossed Thatch!

……As to the other ten or so students caught, rumor was that those who had prior offenses were expelled. I’m not sure about the others. As idiotic as that whole evening was, it wasn’t the dumbest thing we ever did during our Auburn days!

Re: the JCCW ...

I miss the name, too. And occasionally the “flying solo” aspect of it, as much as I love being a part of the War Eagle Reader.

But 2 things:

1. Getting quoted all over the place in the wake of the Chizik hiring made me realize that it wasn’t going to be fair to associate Mr. Cribbs’ good name with my frequently half-baked opinions. He was fine with the name, but if anyone ever quoted something I wrote and ascribed it to Mr. Cribbs, I’d feel terrible, and I sure wouldn’t put it past certain writers to not be able to tell the difference. I didn’t want to take that chance.

2. I’d originally intended the JCCW to be half-Auburn football/half-BSC basketball, and then at least 1/4 mid-major stuff after BSC dropped to D-III. But with no team to attach myself to and no real drive to write mid-major hoops coverage, I felt like that was behind me and it was time to move on to another site, leaving the JCCW as it was. Or something.

Hope that makes sense. Regardless: thanks Jay (and Acid) for the shoutout. And if there’s anyone out there wondering what the hell we’re talking about, I’m here.

Oh, confession: Haley Center is maybe my least favorite building in the world. Visiting there on gameday is one thing. Working there 14 hours a day is another.

Awesome

Great idea, Jay

- I have always cheered for Georgia, even before I married a Dawg

- I love Tommy Tuberville, but hate how he left the cupboard bare

- I will never forget sitting 20 rows up watching Jamie Howard throw 4 interceptions in the fourth quarter (right in front of me)

- Auburn started the tradition of Tiger Walk (and such), you cannot convince me otherwise

- Toomers is no where near the best Lemonade

- Jim Fyffe will never be replaced. I listen to him on YouTube at least twice a season

- I love when Alabama Fans look like "idiots" or do something "classy" for the world to see

- I wish that Auburns PA announcer would be biased toward Auburn, at least a little. He is currently the ultimate professional

- Aubie is the best mascot ever… END OF STORY

- I have broken my fair share of paper shakers

7. I like cars on campus. They are part of Americana and pose no safety problems.

8. I like UGA except when the play AU. I hate Bama always.

9. My grandfather played football at AU. My father went to Bama, so I grew up a Bama fan. I repented that transgression in 1976 and have never looked back.

Just a few

I have an irrational hatred for Ole Miss. I honestly can’t tell you any reason why, I just do. Although, if they make Admiral Ackbar their mascot, I may have to change my tune.

I wish Auburn would be consistently competitive in basketball, and I think we could be. The new arena is shaping up to be great, and Jeff Lebo may be on his last legs. Our next hire in roundball is crucial.

Am I the only one who wonders what the mid-aughts would have been like if we had fired Tubs and hired Petrino in 2003?

Speaking of the mid-aughts, I believe one of the 2003-2005 receiving corps was one of the most criminally underrated units the SEC has seen. Everyone made a big deal about Campbell, Williams, and Brown (and for good reason), but the offense didn’t really drop off until after 2005, when Aromashodu, Obomanu, and Mix all graduated.

I believe at this point I may like Chizik better than I ever liked Tuberville. He gets it in a way Tubs didn’t.

don't post often, but i couldn't help saying:

When i had a friend playing at bama, I told him I was rooting for him, even while i hated his team, and I was lying.

My mom (a bama grad) still thinks i cheer for them when they’re not playing Auburn.

I’ve eaten several meals at Momma G’s in Tuscaloosa. I felt dirty.

I hate watching the slow metamorphosis of Auburn fans into bama fans. I think the silver lining to bama’s national title is a presumed halt in the rise of toothless auburn fans that never went to college. I really can’t stand Auburn fans with Bama fan expectations for our football team. I love winning as much as anyone else, but the day we treated Tommy Tuberville like he hadn’t performed in Tuscaloosa was the saddest day I can remember for my school. (even though I’m thrilled with the current state of things) It may be simple minded – but i like to think that the ultimate goal is churning out more great auburn men and women from our teams as well as our classrooms. Let’s win, but let’s do it with integrity.

Even it it was good for auburn and recruiting, I wish we hadn’t switched from Russell.

I’ve never liked the tiger eye logo.

I would drive an 82 Datsun before I allowed my family to stop getting our 50 yd. line, lower level tickets.

I am never insulted by the “cow college” label. I wish the school fought to retain that image.

I can listen to my father and grandfather tell stories about their days in Auburn all day long. My grandfather says they used to shoot rabbits in the drain that runs through campus.

I wish I had gone to more Auburn baseball games, and I went to a bunch of them.

I didn’t watch the iron bowl this year. I was working and figured I’d just start listening on the radio. After we jumped out ahead, I couldn’t jinx us by switching to tv. I would have been mad about it afterward, but it allowed me the chance to hear someone – please somebody tell me who it was – say, “I’d rather be part of the family than the nation any day.” – well said i think.

I think the old strutting duck was a great auburn experience on a thursday night.

I could go on for days, but i’ll stop here. War eagle everybody.

My last 3 months in Auburn began today...

Coming to terms with going to another school for graduate school is not really happening; it’s just left me reflecting on the past three and a half years, and onto the impact Auburn had on me in high school.

-I had a Bo Jackson football jersey before I understood anything about basketball…and I’m from Kentucky.

-I started reading Football Saturday in the South back sometime in high school. When my parents ended up adopting my first laptop for college, my father found the link and started reading.

-I don’t think I could’ve traded my senior football season for a perfect one. Too many wonderful stories came out of this season.

-Being from Auburn has gotten me as far as my resume has in terms of graduate school. Auburn grads who are professors at UGA and UK were on my side as soon as they saw the “Auburn University” on my name tag.

-I bought the “Auburn has the winning Gene” t-shirt from Tiger Rags. The corniness of it keeps me from wearing it around Auburn, but once I hit graduate school, that will be in the normal rotation.

I wish

I love my life but wish I had done better in school to be admitted to Auburn.

I love the fact that I was dirt poor growing up in West Alabama, having my entire family as Bama fans and them thinking they were better than someone. Seems Bama brings that somehow.

Not going to Auburn and only being able to travel across the state to the University once in my childhood has left me with totally new experiences as I grew into an adult. It’s like I experience new things each time I go.

I still feel I could have walked on as a player.

It’s not Ole Miss I hate….I hate Arkansas almost as much as Bama.

Regardless of school….I still love Eli Gold’s voice.

I get teary eyed every time I see the team take the field……watching the eagle fly.

I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.

Thanks for the memories!

Few of my own…

> used to work at Foy Union and as a projectionist at Langdon…Always took pride in the fact that we had an abundance of info and could answer any trivia question…forgotten how many bricks are in Haley center now…getting old. Loved showing the free movies ( and watching people make out in the backrow…used to drop popcorn on them!)

> Was the OIC of an NROTC detachment that held the doors for dignitaries in the Presidents box for games…got to sit there and watch the game, eat. Met alot of bigwigs there. Great experience.

> remember making homemade waterslides on the hill in front of the Omega Tau Sigma house with plastic shheting and Tide! Good Times!

> I find it extremely difficult to root for other teams in bowl games…but I did root for Bama against the Donghorns! (I have Texas Tech grads as siblings and HATE Texas!)

> Never been prouder than to watch the full Navy/Marine Battalion on the field in whites!

> A couple of ROTC buds and I used to play “Night Ops.” get camo’d up and sneak across campus trying not to be spotted. built a bottle rocket shooter out of a pipe…put sights on it…can’t remember the streets or Frat houses now but we shot alot of bottle rockets at open windows…don’t think any ever made it…

> Watching the Eagle fly has always been spine tingling for me…although I’ve always hated having to answer the Tiger/War Eagle question.

> I once helped the campus police remove a fallen tree from the roadway during a thunderstorm/tornado….months later they followed me home after a traffic stop that should have resulted in an arrest. I’ve always thought that was really cool of them.

> My 11 year old son has learned the words to the fight song just by listening to me scream it at the top of my lungs!

by G. Kevin on Mar 1, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

I love all things Auburn.

My family is almost through and through Auburn. There hasn’t been a quiet Saturday in our house during football season for quite some time.

My confessions:

-I tear up a little just about everytime I hear the fight song. Especially right before games and what not.

-The euro soccer music before kickoff is totally awesome and makes me want suit up and return the opening kick.

-I could walk all over Auburn on a gameday. From Kinnucans all the way to Samford Hall and back and everywhere in between.

-Nothing beats your favorite beer and good food on the grill on gameday. Its like the whole world stops and everything is going to be alright for a few hours.

-I love when College Gameday comes to town. Nothing like turning up the intensity even more sometimes.

-I hate Kurt Herbstriet’s (sp) opinions 99% of the time. To me, he is hurting college football. The way he (and most of ESPN really) get so infatuated with certain teams through success and failure is sickening.

-I hate that Bama went undefeated in the SEC in 2009 and was smothered in media hype and Auburn did the same thing in 2004 and we were almost a joke, we were treated like a Boise State in the SEC no less. I’ll probably always be bitter about this.

-I don’t root for Alabama at anytime for anything period.

-I like Tommy Tubberville, he put us on the map. But he quit working on Auburn football long before he was let go/resigned. Now maybe he wasn’t given the best environment to succeed and to continue to work hard, but he quit on us, and that’s not what being an Auburn man is all about.

-Can we please string together some strong quarterbacks? Its a joke that a school with the stature of Auburn hasn’t had better at this position. I know we’re running back U but come on.

These are random and I could probably go on for days.

Looking forward to 2010 and War Damn Eagle!!!

Isn't it funny

that all of mine involve alcohol….

Drinking Long Island Ice Tea out of the pitcher at Harvey’s on my nineteenth birthday.

Playing chicken with a train somewhere near the Hungry Hunter (not my best moment), on my nineteenth birthday.

Relieving myself into someone’s convertible, outside of Harvey’s, after Long Island Ice Tea, on my nineteenth birthday (still not my best moment).

Walking around on the roof of Alumni Hall, drunker than Cooter Brown, but before my nineteenth birthday.

We used to play quarters with some girls who had an apartment at CDV. The saying was, “you walked into CDV and crawled out.” Always seemed to work that way.

Spring Quarter at Chewacla – throwing frisbees and drinking anything available.

Sneaking beer into the old theatre on College Street across from Kaz’s place. I packed an entire twelve pack of Michelob bottles into my jacket, and then proceeded to knock all the empties down the isle in the middle of the movie.

Walking back to campus after “all-you-can-eat $1 Krispy Kreame donuts after midnight” in the cold during winter quarter, drunker than Cooter Brown.

Stumbling down fraternity row after football games, looking for either “ELI” or “Sidewinder” to be playing.

Reuniting with my old high school girlfriend who was visiting from Tuscaloosa and going to the AU vs. Kentucky basketball game when Kentucky was ranked number one and we beat them. My best moment in Beard Eaves, and a really great night. There was alcohol involved too.

by UglyJoe on Mar 1, 2010 9:20 PM CST reply actions

Holy crap!

I had forgotten “Eli” and “Sidewinder”! LOVED walking Frat Row…

Actually have ridden the train from…whatever apartment I lived in right on the tracks out to the Hunter!!! (used to wash dishes there too!) Had to be real careful though…not every train was slowing to stop in Opelika!

Momma Goldberg’s!!!

Most embarrasing moment??? used to be a club across the street from Toomers…one night after an FSU game…passed out in the bathroom and they never checked when they closed…woke up at 5am…locked in a bar!!! Bought a few rounds for the HOUSE!!!

Krystal’s at 2AM!!!

Yeah it was a pretty nice Italian resturaunt upstairs......

and a bar downstairs. Had a good buddy that bartended there……most of the bartenders in town knew each other and partied together in those days. Don’t forget about “Mr. Resistor and the Incapacitators”……they were the Darnell’s house band for quiet a while….along with Nothing Personal……great bands.

Okay, time for mine:

-I really hate the all orange in the stadium. Yea, blue doesn’t stand out, but still. We look like Clempzin.

-Had never heard of Bo Jackson until I arrived on campus September 1985.

-Chose to go to school at Auburn for two reasons: 1) I had visited a few times in high school and saw the prettiest girls I had ever seen 2) Didn’t have a state in the name

-Has dated more UA girls since leaving school than AU girls.

-Once owned an Alabama shirt in 1979 at the tender age of eleven. Never heard of Auburn until the following year, in spite of living in the state for two years.

-Always roots for SEC teams in bowl games.

-Only HATES two teams in CFB and none of them are in the SEC.

-Went to every Iron Bowl at Legion Field as a student. Still have the I Was There bumper stickers for the last three.

-Purposely delayed graduating so I could go to the 1989 Iron Bowl.

-Refuse to travel to a game in the state of Mississippi. No prejudice, just a cost/benefit thing. I usually only attend games where we have a 50-50 chance of winning.

-Have a 25 season streak of having seen at least one game in person.

Never before in the field of CFB recruiting, has much much been accomplished by so few, in the face of so many...

I agree WEA with "the orange in the stadium" ...

… There are so many red or orange teams, I liked the fact that we were different especially not like Clemson or Florida.

AUsome post

-I learned to tie my shoes in Jordan-Hare when I was five. I insisted that everyone around watch me during the game and they happily obliged me with an AUdience. Sorry and thank you.

-Auburn is family

-The proudest day of my life thus far has been standing in front of Samford Hall with the other Auburn men in my family for a picture prior to graduation. That picture included three generations of Auburn Grads, the fourth passed while I was in school.

-When I was a freshman, me and three of my fraternity brothers cut down a tree on the president’s lawn to be used in our house as a Christmas tree.

-I tear up when the eagle circles the stadium, when our guys take the field, and just about anytime I hear the band play the fight song but I’ve never cried at a funeral.

-I’ll probably name my sons after buildings on campus.

-Toomer’s lemonade is AUsome but purely for nostalgic reasons.

-Momma Goldbergs is possibly better than sex but if they ever leave the old location on Magnolia I won’t be able to bring myself to eat at the new location because it simply isn’t the same.

-I am a fan of navy pants with navy jerseys, other than that I love our uni’s.

-I never liked Tubs but overall he did a fairly good job.

-I like Bobby Lowder, he has made major contributions to Auburn.

-I always pull for the SEC but never for the bammers; I hate the gumps as much as the Taliban.

-I never let people with bammer tags over in traffic.

-I hate sitting in the alumni section because everyone sits down the whole time and I often buy student tickets because I don’t want to ruin the game for others by standing up during big plays.

-People who sell their Iron Bowl tickets to gumps should be shot. Period. Give them away if you have to. No amount of money is worth selling out our team.

-I have to listen to Jim Fyffe’s greatest calls at some point during the trip down for games.

-I wish our basketball program was better; whenever they come to town I go out and support them wearing my Auburn gear regardless of their record or their chances at a win.

-I love that my future in-laws are huge Seminoles and Auburn handedly has a winning record against FSU.

-I love that my future wife has Auburn hair and blue eyes. And yes Jay, women do just look better dressed in orange and blue.

-I wish I had studied more while I was at Auburn but five football seasons was worth trying to explain to my parents why I had to repeat a few classes.

-l love the Supper Club but I always wake up with the worst hangover which I blame on the cig.smoke.

Great thread

- Only dropped one class at Auburn, that was Chemistry 102 and there was a baseball game at Plainsman Park which was the determining factor (besides the fact I was failing)

- Only went to one AU road game at LSU when I was a senior at Auburn and my cousin was a freshman at LSU. I believe that became known as “the cigar game” and the beginning of the end for Gerry Dinardo.

- Found my dog as a pup abandoned by the fire tower near Tuskegee. A redneck friend of mine offered to “put him down” at the time as he was looking awfully ragged, but we took him to the vet instead. He’s 12 years old and asleep right here now.

- My most embarrassing moment was getting drunk and crashing a moped on one of the speed bumps over at Eagles West. Broke my collarbone and wound up covered in gas.

confessions

-this fall will more than likely mark the first AU home game I’ve missed since the late 90s.
-I would like to see orange jerseys (no one probably likes me now) but not as a permanent thing. Maybe during a HC game just to spice things up.
-My favorite Auburn game ever was the ’97 Iron Bowl
-I feel like Auburn is the most disrespected SEC school
-the ’04 snub made me so made I tried my best to do something about it

by FansPoll.com on Mar 2, 2010 11:16 PM CST reply actions

These are all great! Thanks for the idea Jay!

Now a few of my own:

-I think I was one of the few who wasn’t disappointed in the hiring of Chizik (I know it’s hard to win at an irrelevant school in Iowa State and with the right talent he can coach ’em up and he proved that last season).

-I feel Auburn is heaven on Earth and nothing can compare to the traditions and women on gameday on the plains.

-I try to stray away from the subject every time its brought up to try and not sound like a hypocrite, but I did not attend Auburn and I was raised in a family full of Dawgs and bammers (but I assure you I’ve been to more Auburn games in a single season and I’m more loyal towards the University than most of the sidewalk-alum bammers have in a lifetime.).

-CGM is my favorite coordinator of all time.

-I love Coach Jordan to death (classy and respectable southern gentlemen), but Pat Dye will ALWAYS be my favorite, not just Auburn, but coach in all of sports ever.

-I was all in favor of letting Coach Tuberville go back in 2003, but was a 100% supporter of his immediately following the 2004 season.

-I hate bammer with a passion, but I secretly pretend to act like I don’t mind them when I’m around my friends just to save the headache of trying to argue with them.

-I always pulled for bammer expect for when they played us, until I got a taste of what their fans were really like as I got older and met more. Now I wish their team, program, and midget coach the worst.

-Bo Jackson’s not my favorite Auburn player… Cadillac is.

-I’m against a playoff, but I’m more against the BCS than anything all because of how they screwed us in 2004.

-I strongly believe the 2004 AU squad was the most talented and best team in Auburn and the state of Alabama history.

-to me, no drug can equal that feeling I get by being at Jordan-Hare and hearing crowd chant “WAAAAAARRRRRRRR EAGLE HEY” as Nova flies around the stadium and watching the team take the field and hearing the roaring of the crowd live.

-I actually don’t mind Tuscaloosa and don’t think it’s as bad as some of you say, except for the time of year when the inbreds roll into town for a game.

-I’m not a supporter of Auburn basketball because I hate that sport with a passion.

-I do like the small town feel Auburn offers, but I also wish they’d open up more bars on/around campus to watch the games at for guys like me who go on gameday without a ticket just to go.

-I’ve never seen Auburn on a snowday, but from some of the pics I have seen on the net, it looks more beautiful than any other town in America on a snowday.

-I honestly want to one day settle down in Auburn, simply because I just can’t get enough of it!

-I’ve always had a schoolboy crush on Courtney Cox, despite she’s admitted she’s a bammer.

-And… I watched Dear John and liked it. haha

Troop, if i had my dream job, it'd be Auburn University.

-Coach Gene Chizik

Not-So-Secret Confessions

what everyone else is thinking

—Dont even think about changing the uni’s, best in college football
—Auburn fans are referred to as the Auburn Family, not the Auburn Nation, there’s a huge difference. Let’s keep it a family
—I would love to see a foot race between Tim Carter, Bo Jackson and Robert Baker
—To this day I don’t like Hines Ward because I think he took a cheap shot at Jimmy Brumbaugh in 97 and took out his knee
—Brandon Cox wasn’t the best AU QB but he was the toughest
—Whenever I hear someone say Touchdown Auburn, I hear JIm Fyffe’s voice in my head
—Nachos at Momma G’s and Momma’s Love
—I miss Traditions on College, they too made a mean sandwich
—Verne Lundquist is a bumbling idiot (sorry Jay) give me Ron Franklin and a healthy Mike Gottfried, that is the voice of the ESPN Saturday night game
—I still laugh when I think of Tommy Tuberville saying “Click Clack” in the first Under Armour ad…he sounded like the Aflac duck
—I think every SEC fan has a mutual disgust for Arkansas and Tennessee, not real sure why
—Erin Andrews does need to cut her hair
—Spencer Tillman wears to much makeup on CBS and it weirds me out
—If Bob Davie never says the word Auburn again it will be too soon
—Tiger Walk is awesome but seeing the Eagle fly before kick off stirs up so many levels of emotions, it’ gets me everytime
—I will ne ver understand the tearing down of goalposts but for some strange reason I had to help carry it to the top of the student section after beating UAT in 97
—Georgia is my second favorite team
—My first time in the student section when the team did something spectacular, I put my shaker under my arm and started clapping…what an idiot.
—Seeing Chris Porter in person, come out of nowhere and rebound and dunk the ball from his shoelaces is one of the best basketball plays I have ever seen. period
—When my son came home from daycare saying R#$% TI&#, I got on to him and told him never to say that phrase again. I have a strong dislike for the school up the road.
—Seeing the movie 7 at the free movie just added to the creepiness of the movie
—Vanderbilt fans are the most irritable folks I’ve been around at a football game
—I refuse to bring my sons to an LSU game, home or away, those people scare me
—does anyone remember the kickoff in the LaTech game when the cover guy pounced on Jaret Holmes and just started wailing on him?
—I miss Sani freeze, Tiger Time and Milos on Magnolia.
—I love Auburn and want both of my boys to love it as much as my wife and I do. I hope they will grow to be Auburn men in the truest sense of the word

I believe in Auburn and love it.

Couple of notes

-Put Alexander Wright in that race, as well.

-Vandy’s fans have nothing on Techies. Those people will talk about everything EXCEPT football the entore game. AND I actually heard this statement at the ‘02 game at Bobby Dodd, after they finlly expanded the stadium: "Wouldn’t it just be a shame if that new section, just full of Auburn fans came crumbling down?"

My retort? “Well, if the same Tech engineers that built the ‘incredible sinking dorms’ over at Ga. State for the Olympics, they might ought to start worrying…..jackass.”

Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"
