Monday Morning Musings
The middle of May typically marks the beginning of the dog days of Auburn Athletics - there's just not a whole lot of news coming out of the Plains - or anywhere else for that matter. Football coaches begin preparing to take what little vacation they have each year and writers scramble to find good material.
Luckily, there are some good stories taking place beyond football that we are not typically accustomed to enjoying this time of year. It starts with baseball and even spills over into basketball.
I spent Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park watching the hottest baseball team in the SEC. I know I've been saying it a lot these past few months, but Auburn Baseball is a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Sunday was no different. In front of a crowd of nearly 2,800, Auburn took care of business again, grabbing a 9-2 win over Tennessee.
It marked the fourth straight conference series win for John Pawlowski's bunch. Taking two of three from the Vols coupled with South Carolina's weekend sweep of Arkansas in Fayetteville leaves Auburn sitting one game ahead of the Razorbacks in the SEC West. The Tigers now stand 35-17 overall and 17-10 in SEC play.
Meanwhile in Tuscaloosa, Alabama held off Ole Miss 6-3, pushing the Rebels a game back of Auburn after losing the weekend series to the Tide. The Rebels sit 16-11 in conference play heading into the final weekend. It's fitting that the West will be decided head-to-head next weekend when Auburn travels to Oxford.
"You look at it and this team has gone through a lot," Pawlowski said. "We're just trying to find a way into the SEC Tournament. We've played well over an extended period of time and won some series. Now we have a chance to win the West and play for a championship. That's what it's all about."
Perception is a funny thing. Even the most astute person can fall victim to it. Many of us did just that during the reign of Jeff Lebo. His lack of success on the recruiting trail had many of us believing it had more do with circumstances than his ability to recruit. It was easy to blame the NCAA sanctions of many years back and the labeling of AAU coach Mark Komara as an Auburn booster for the reasons Lebo couldn't recruit in-state. You hear it enough and you start believing it.
Enter new coach Tony Barbee and just like that he's signed arguably the top two players in Alabama within two months of his arrival. The signing of Huntsville natives Luke Cothron (who last season played prep ball in North Carolina) and Josh Langford signal a departure from past recruiting classes.
Like Gene Chizik in football, Barbee has decreed that every player in the country is on the table and attainable. Sure it's a lofty assertion, but it's hard to argue with the early success. It all comes back to perception. It's not only how others see you, but more importantly how you see yourself.
"The expectations that I'm going to have for myself and this program are going to be higher than anybody can put on me," Barbee said recently. "I look at the schedule every year and say, ‘‘I don't see a game on that schedule that we're not winning." I'm the eternal optimist."
Kudos to Barbee for getting it.
Count me among those who've been skeptical of the coach in waiting position in college football. When you look at its short history in coaching circles, you see a position that's been riddled with controversy. Outside of Joker Phillips at Kentucky, there's rarely been a smooth transition to the top job.
Jimbo Fisher takes over at Florida State this year with a divided fan base - hardly the ideal situation for following a legend. Many Seminole fans are still outraged over the school's decision to deny Bobby Bowden a final season in 2010. Many believed he was owed it. Finances and competition on the field said otherwise. Either way, the big loser is Fisher.
Now comes news out of Austin that Will Muschamp's coach in waiting gig at Texas may not be all it's cracked up to be. After spurning offers from Auburn, Tennessee and others in recent years, it now looks like Muschamp may be in his vice president role for a while.
According to published reports this past week, Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds is said to be reconsidering his plan to retire in 2011. Why does that matter? Well, as part of a plan put in place a few years back, Dodds was to step down next year and current Longhorn coach Mack Brown was set to step in as athletic director, with Muschamp finally getting the head coaching position.
Reneging on his pledge could leave Muschamp looking like a fool. Making approximately $1 million annually as defensive coordinator/coach in waiting is well south of the more than $3 million annually that Auburn and Tennessee supposedly offered for his services.
Loyalty is not what it used to be both in business and athletics. Right now, Muschamp is saying all the right things, telling The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Tony Barnhart last week that, "I'm very happy at Texas. I think I have the best job in college football."
Whether he still believes that is anyone's guess. Then again, things could be setting up perfectly for Muschamp to make a return to Athens should Mark Richt have another sub-par season. This saga will be fun to watch.

Obviously
Tony Barbee has taken a page out of Chizik’s handbook as far as shooting for the stars in terms of basketball recruiting. His new attitude is refreshing.
Muschamp is an idiot. He’s burned all his boats that would float him back to the SEC, which is not only the toughest stage in the country on which to compete, but his home. He will wither on that Texas vine because I’m not convinced that Mack Daddy is ready to give it up for quite a while. I could understand him not wanting the Auburn job, but to spurn Tennessee as well? What’s he waiting on? Georgia?

I agree with ya on Barbee, but ...
… yeah it would take a UGA offer (and I have it on good authority) to get moma to agree to another move.

AUTigerman, do you happen to know the Terms & Conditions of Muschamp's current Texas contract?
I believe I read that Jimbo Fisher’s HC-in-waiting contact called out stuff like this: How much Fisher would be paid if Bowden didn’t exit at a specified time; How much Fisher would be paid if Fisher didn’t get to HC job when Bowden left, etc, etc.
If Muschamp’s contact doesn’t have these kinds of clauses, then UT just gave Muschamp a big raise — UT didn’t pledge anything. Nothing’s wrong with a big raise … and, Muschamp still has the options he had before.
He’ll no doubt get a HC job he wants soon enough. Obviously UT’s his first choice — it’s worth waiting for him obviously. If that doesn’t happen soon enough for him, he’s still holding all the cards.
Muschamp appears to be a smart guy. I’d bet he knows what he’s doing when it comes to managing his career and protecting his interests whatever they may be … and, I seriously doubt that he’ll end up looking like a ‘fool.’ If his UT contract comes up again before he gets a HC job, he can protect his interests with an iron-clad prenup with UT … if he doesn’t have one now.
P.S. It would be very interesting indeed if UGA had something to offer Muschamp before Brown vacates the UT HC job. Muschamp would have to show his cards then for sure.
Would it be a replay of Vince Dooley’s come-to-Jesus decision in 1981?
I don't have any more info than ...
… hasn’t already been publizied. However to answer your questions : Muschamp receives a gauranteed base of $900,000.00 per yr. + bonuses, which is automatically renewed every year (making him one of the two highest paid asst. coach in the nation). If Brown exits, Will would get $ 2 million per yr + bonuses as HC. If he is not the HC by 2013, that portion of his contract will be renegotiated at a figure higher than $2.5 Million.
Unlike with Jimbo Fisher and FSU, there is no stipulation on an amount Muschamp would be paid if he doesn’t get the HC when Brown exits. But proably more interesting (again unlike Fisher’s deal) there is no buyout clause in his contract, should another school wished to hire him away from Texas.
Yes it appears that he holds all the cards to his future. He is one of two of the highest paid assistants in the country, He is the coach in waiting for what may be the best HC job in the country , if measured soley by financial security (Mack Brown is the nation’s highest paid coach at $5 million per yr. + bonuses). Add to that the fact that he does not have a buyout in the event he should decide he would like to go somewhere esle. And further, what I know is a major factor, .,.. that his wife is not interested in moving anymore around the country on the coach’s carosel, and you have a guy that proably is going to be at Texas for a long time. He and Carol feel like they have definetly found their home in Austin.
I strongly believe that he is in the position he is in for two reasons : one is because they like very much what they see in Will Muschamp and the other is because they do not want to lose him like they did Gene Chizik.

Thanks au-t-man ...
… for the T+C info. It confirms what I figured — Muschamp is firmly in control of his future and being very well paid for his effort.
And, I’ll say this about what I’ve observed about the … on-the-job-Coach-Will-Muschamp … at every coaching stop he’s made: He’s always earned his money. He doesn’t shut it down on his present job even when he’s looking at other options elsewhere. He’s focused on making his unit better on the field and off the field. He’s been able to work with his peer coaches. He’s not worried about getting all the credit. He doesn’t point fingers of blame in public at his players, his peers, nor his bosses. And he doesn’t run — his family members, or his agent, or anybody else — out to speak for him in public & then give some lame Plausible-Deniability-Head-Fake-Response himself. And, he produces results!!
For all the chatter about loyalty & such, I’d bet that he hasn’t ‘burned any bridges’ with anybody he’s ever worked for.
The only bad thing I’ve ever heard about him is that Brother Oliver goes around saying … every chance he gets … that, "Coach Will Muschamp learned everything he knows from his mentor Coach Brother Oliver." Now that’s a heavy burden to carry. :-)
I don't know
if Georgia is the type of program that would NOW hand over the reigns to a man with NO FBS HC experience. Yes, I know Richt was an assistant in Miamah before landing in Athens, but I think the landscape has changed. High profile assistants landing juicy HC slots might become as big an anachronism as alumnus coaches, as Muschump would be both if he went to Athens, hypothetically. Hmmmm. Maybe that’s my post tomorrow….

Help!!!! My mind is being deceived by my intellect!!
“Perception is a funny thing. Even the most astute person can fall victim to it.”
Jay, If one falls victim to (i.e. is deceived by) his own process of perceiving — is the victim, in this case, also the perpetrator?
And, if so, what recourse should the victim take to mitigate the damage that the perpetrator may try to inflict in the future?
Think
about what would happen if your perception wasn’t even your reality.
