Would Texas A&M Really Have Been Good For The SEC?
With the report that it looks like Texas, OU, and A&M are sticking the the Big 12, err, Big 10, means that Texas A&M will obviously not be joining the SEC anytime soon. Which raises the question, would A&M really have been a good fit for the SEC? Would it have been beneficial to both parties for A&M to move? I say yes but what do you think? Would A&M been a good fit? Vote or comment tellling me what you guys think about the subject. Heres a couple of A&M thoughts and facts.
- In 2007-2008 the aggies generated $71,186,184 of revenue. (Through sponsers, ticket sales, etc.)
- A&M would provide a Dallas (and Texas) market.
- Would have a natural rival in Arkansas but lose Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
- Last win against SEC foe in football was in the 1990's (against LSU.)

Absolutely not.
For starters, they would’ve been a complete outcast in the SEC. Why add a 13th team? Secondly, how could they have expected to survive with an SEC schedule?

I agree sort of.
I agree that an SEC schedule would infact be rough on A&M, but the SEC would have added a second team (Ex. Clemson) if A&M had moved.
Note: This post is based mostly on a money standpoint, from a competitive standpoint, your right they would have been an outcast and would have struggled.

I think they would’ve done well in basketball (men’s and women’s) and baseball. But football? Forget it.

I think you are off base somewhat.....
granted it would have taken A&M a while to be competitive in the SEC as far as being a threat to compete for a division but Texas A&M would fare better than Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Vandy and Kentucky most every year and would have made the strength of the inconference Schedule that much tougher year in and year out. Remember guys it’s not just that every team can beat you on the score board in the SEC its the physicality that it takes to win against every team in the SEC that makes it tough and A&M wouldn’t have a problem adjusting to our style of play……it wasn’t that long ago that they played in a defensive minded league.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
They would have been a great fit.
Sure they aren’t great at football now but they’ll recover. If we were to have picked up TAMU, they would have provided the SEC with it’s 3rd Tier 1 academic school and would have been the only one in the west, improved our standings in basketball and baseball. They have pre-existing rivalries with LSU and Arkansas, and would have provided TV markets in Texas and helped other SEC schools recruit out of Texas by the SEC establishing a presence there.
Basically we didn’t need any help in the football department, we obviously have that covered, but they would have made the SEC more well rounded.
Fight on, fight on, fight on men! Remember the Rose Bowl, we’ll win then.
I agree
If the SEC were to add two new members with A & M being one, A& M would have been a great fit, and they already have a mentality akin to the most ardent SEC members. Their passion is as intense as any SEC school, and their overall sports program is better than many SEC schools. Their football program has been in the tank for a while, not unlike some SEC schools I won’t name here. Perhaps their addition would put AU in the East where it most naturally belonged. I grew up with the Tennessee and Florida rivalries as permanent fixtures on the schedule. Those rivalries were intense and Ole Miss and Mississippi State have proven no substitute. I long for the days of UT, UF, Georgia , and Alabama as annual games. That lineup never lacked for interest.
