The Best Coaching Jobs In The SEC
There's an interesting story in this year's Athlon's SEC Preview that ranks the top coaching jobs in America. Based on tradition, facilities, location and money, the author tries to answer, where is the best place to coach? For the record, Auburn comes in at number twenty.
The top five are: Texas, USC, Florida, Alabama and Ohio State. USC and Alabama baffle me. Undoubtedly great jobs for sure; but it's hard to make a case for the Trojans and the Bammers as top five jobs. Four years ago, Alabama couldn't find any takers. Things have drastically changed in Tuscaloosa, but a top five destination? I think not.
How would you rank the top jobs in the SEC? I'll take a stab at it here. I'd like to hear your thoughts. To be objective, I'll leave Auburn off the list. Here are my top 11:
- Florida - A runaway number one in my opinion. Is this the same program that only started winning consistently twenty years ago? With tons of money, the best recruiting base in the SEC and solid leadership, the Gators are the class of the conference. With the exception of Texas, this is the best coaching gig in America.
- LSU - This program is a sleeping giant. I know, they've won two national championships in recent years, but you still get the feeling this program has underachieved. With great tradition and a fertile recruiting base in nearby Texas, this job should be mentioned in the same breath as Florida, Ohio State and Michigan. All the ingredients are in place for the Tigers to be a perennial top ten team. Look for it to become a destination job in the coming years.
- Alabama - I can hear the Bammers screaming now that I've rated their job lower than it deserves. You have to give huge kudos to the Alabama administration for finding the right coach and paying him enough to stay. That coupled with the improvements to Bryant-Denny Stadium, and Bammer is no longer the graveyard of college football coaches. The program is top notch in most every way - except one. Alabama has one of the most irrational, moronic fan bases in America. Nick Saban's success will only make its fans more delusional and demanding. For this reason, Alabama falls out of the national top five.
- Georgia - Speaking of underachieving, the Georgia program is the poster child of woulda, coulda, shoulda. Located in one of the great football towns in one of the great football states, the Georgia job is a hidden gem. The program has plenty of big name donors, the HOPE scholarship to assist with recruiting and a somewhat rational fan base. Combine these positives with a solid recruiting base and you have one of the top jobs in America.
- Tennessee - One of the great scenes for college football, Tennessee has almost everything a coach could want: great tradition, huge stadium, loyal fanbase and plenty of dough. The only thing missing is a recruiting base. The state of Tennessee rarely produces large quantities of blue chip high school athletes. This forces Tennessee to have to recruit nationally. That's not easy year in and year out. Still, Derek Dooley has one of the great jobs in football.
- South Carolina - Columbia is one of the great mysteries in all of football. They have arguably the most loyal fans in the SEC. Their people have filled Williams-Brice Stadium consistently each season dating back to their independent days. They have a first ballot hall of fame coach and still struggle to win. The reasons why remain a mystery. Whatever the answer, the Gamecock job is not a bad one because expectations are so low.
- Arkansas - Location wise, Fayetteville is one of the most underrated cities in the South. The program has great history and awesome facilities. The biggest problem with the Razorback job is the school has never been a natural fit in the SEC. The western most program in the conference, Arkansas gets little publicity and is regarded by many to be outside the mainstream SEC. Since leaving Atlanta, you'd think Bobby Petrino has been placed in the witness protection program.
- Ole Miss - All the talk about Ole Miss centers on the past. Spend a day in Oxford and you'll swear Archie Manning is still playing. The Rebels love to brag about their tailgating; but it loses some of its luster when you see half the stadium empty on most fall Saturday's. It has been proven time and again that the only way to win at Ole Miss is to cheat. Who wants a job like that?
- Kentucky - When you coach at the most tradition rich basketball program in America, you will never be top banana in Lexington. Rich Brooks made as good a go at it as anyone likely ever will in Blue Grass Country. It's not a bad job. If you can win seven games a year for ten years, you'll likely get your name on the stadium.
- Miss State - The Bulldogs have made great strides in recent years updating their athletic facilities and campus as a whole. But in the end, it's still Starkville. Dan Mullins may prove otherwise, but I doubt it. At best, Miss State is a stepping stone.
- Vanderbilt - One of the great schools in the South. One of the great graveyards in the SEC. If you are smart you take the job and shoot for back-to-back seven win seasons and then bolt. On the bright side, it's a great place to raise a family - if you can make it that long.

Agree with your top five but ...
… I woukd place Georgia # 2. I would move bama to # 5, in part because no one wanted the job before Saban, it will be tough on whoever follows him, and 50% due to my admitted prejudice.
Some coaches want to be at the top programs for money and facilities. Some coaches (like the avg. guy) might like job security. If one took a poll on the best place for a coach to work for job security, I would give the following rank: Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Miss State, & South Carolina. Six wins and a possible pizza bowl will keep you coming back.

I disagree on your assertion that Bama is not a top 5 coaching destination......
at least as much as Florida is. Both have unreasonable fanbases but that is to be expected…….and I would put UK above Ole Miss and Rkansas. Because expectations are not what they are in most other SEC schools UK is a relatively low pressure job….Ole Miss is prone to fire a good coach that has done more than any coach in the past 30 years (aka….forgetting who you are after one successful season and thinking you are a better program than you are). UK, however, knows their place in the football pecking order and any tier of bowl invitations are good for the wildcat faithful. As far as AU’s ranking…..I would put them in the top 15 currently and if the powers that be end up as we hope they have, with Lowder neutered and the rest not powerful enough to reestablish the Oligarchy, AU will again become a top destination……Chizik is certainly doing his part.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I would say
that Alabama was the most dysfunctional job prior to Saban, but that by giving him absolute power, they have reversed their fortunes tremendously. I’m curious how the climate might change again once he’s gone.
LSU and Tennessee should rank high because of the lack of competition for in-state talent. At least from within the state, I should say.
Will change conferences for food. God bless.

crap
I think its a bit of crap to drop bama SOLELY becuase you dont like the fans! Alot of the other comments were made with actual thought input… but then you get to bama and its like yeah they are doing well now yeah they have alot of money to throw around … but i dont like their fans !!! really ???
i am a Bama boy ( tuscaloosa born )and my fiancee is an avid auburn girl.. her folks are graduates of auburn and her dad was fortunate enough to play football for the tigers. I can say all this and not have to take ridiculous blows at your school that have no merit on the staff and or position.
When you write an article… try to leave the bias out of it … i know its hard.. but still
and yes i know that bama had a hard time filling the position before saban.. and that ALONE would have made for a great reason to drop them down in placement…. but you took it from that and made the reason because of the fans… yes i know a ton of them are rednecks through and through… but so are auburn fans… and i mean really so are a ton of sec fans !..
Woah cowboy...
You come and attack Jay Coulter’s article? To me, LSU has the worst fans of the bunch but UA comes in a close second. As far as demands, nobody demands more than fans of the Crimson Tide. Once Saban is gone, it is NOT a top five job. I mean, when you’ve got T-Shirts running around saying “The Bear is back and his name is Saban” how is the next guy going to have a chance at success? I suggest Alabama rides the Saban horse until the legs fall off. Because once he’s gone, it’s going to be hard to find someone able to live up to the Bear.
All you did was get mad about how he felt about the fans. Todd92 did a much better job arguing your case than you did. You aren’t helping your team’s case any. Come with a logical argument when you’re coming to the rival’s site. If, that is, you come at all. It wouldn’t bother me if you didn’t come back again.
Woahhh tiger....
How about growing up a bit and be objective. Saying Alabama isnt a top 5 job is ignorant. It’s one of the most storied programs in the nation. Notre Dame isnt winning but its a damn good job. Definitely a top 5 job. You can’t rank teams by fan bases unless you go by attendance. Even by that measure they are top 5. Truth is hard to swallow sometimes.
I don’t see how being harsh about another teams comment helps either. Seems every other SEC blog has everyone from different teams having great conversation…..except for this one. Get over yourself.
Hahaha
Ignorant? Well, that’s the pot calling the kettle black from a UA fan. HAAHAHA THANKS FOR THE LAUGH.
Is that the best response you have?
Nothing worthy of posting except for that little lame comment? Why even post on a blog if you can’t contribute a reasonable argument? You don’t represent your institution very well.
simply stating
i dont mind where he placed alabama … did i ever say they should be ranked higher? i did not. I was saying that the perceived character of a certain fanbase.. is not something a coaching position should be based on. Every team has irrational fanbase… and they are going to have the rational ones as well. All i was saying is dont attack a position based on something far disconnected from it.
my argument is sound.. did i come in screaming any of that "barner " shit that other fans do. I said his whole argument was sound EXCEPT for the assertion that they are so low based on the fans alone. reread it .. i think you may have missed my point
Well I read it again
Let me restate the issue of the fans. Your team’s fans are the reason it isn’t a top five job along with good ole Moore at the helm. No one can replace Saban, especially not with YOUR TEAM’S FANS calling him the next Bear. Let’s not forget, the other stream of T-Shirts that say, “Nick the Savior Saban” Really? Once Saban is out of there, how could anybody short of Bill Cowher expect to succeed at UA? Yes, all teams have their set of irrational fans. Auburn certainly has its fair share i.e. Charles Barkley. However, NO TEAM has the same irrational demands and delusions of permanent grandeur that those who follow the Crimson Tide maintain. Furthermore, you really see Moore as one of the most helpful five athletic directors in the country for football coaches??
true
I will grant you that the way you explain all this does argue a good point as to why its not a top coaching position. I also agree that alabama fans have some pretty damned lofty expectations. Though as a team with a very strong presence and past history … i can see how the annoying fans can demand such a return to grace. Not saying that we should demand as much as we do… just saying i can see how they would scream for it .
Now let me ask you… Auburn. If chizik is able to take you to a national championship in such a short time there … do you think you guys will demand any less than the best for your team ?? so when the next coach comes in after chizik… whats their welcome going to be like ?
i have to say i think it pretty dumb that there are nick the saban savior shirts.. i have yet to see any of them ( as im in chapel hill north carolina … so i am deep in the heart of the tar heels and duke nation… im a lonely SEC boy here ha)
I just think everyone feels so strongly about a permanent spot BECAUSE saban has done a ridiculous turn around in 3 years. The fans know that he is a great coach… and that i think shows.. at least to me … that he is sitting in a great coaching job for now.

Well
I see your point, but would that make Auburn a top five job in that case? I am not sure one way or the other. What I’m saying, after Saban it’s not a top five job because no one will be happy with his replacement.
there doesnt need to be so much hostility
why is there always such animosity when posting on another teams site. Im not coming here to fight… im coming here to speak an opinion … I appreciate the back up burmbuster… but lets be civil about it. i prefer to have conversations… its far to easy to get caught up in the whole rivalry aspect to realize these .. are just other dedicated sports fans.
My whole point is this … and again it is not meant with any disrespect. Bama got used to having a great coaching staff with bear …. then he was gone… and we declined. We know the full potential of the team, so we expect nothing less than the best of our players and staff who work with them. I would only hole that if you guys had been in the same scenario before you would do the same thing. Unfortunately you havent ( not a stab … as i feel you should have had the opportunity to play for it in 04 ) … but once you get that taste of a victorious season … would you not want it again and again… hell how much was it a pain to go down after that 04 season ?? thats all

And it results in Championships.
Sounds like you need to demand more from your program.
Neither do I.
Quit whining about everyone elses success and get your own house straight. But I doubt that will ever happen.
