In Defense of "WE"
How many of you have had this conversation?
"How did Auburn do this weekend?" And you respond by saying "we won". Only to hear this, "We? Did you play?"
It is my belief that any Auburn fan can use the term "WE" when talking about their favorite team, regardless of the sport.
This is from the Free Library...
For many years, authors have suggested that sport fandom is a societal connection that may assist in the maintenance of psychological health (Curtis, Loy, & Karnilowicz, 1986; Eastman & Land, 1997; Melnick, 1993; Pan, Gabert, McGaugh, & Branvold, 1997; Smith, 1988, 1989; Zillmann, Bryant, & Sapolsky, 1989). Indeed, as early as 1929,
Dr. Daniel Wann...
By identifying with a local sport team, an individual becomes attached to a larger social group. These associations to other fans form the basis for a valuable connection to society at large and serve as a buffer to loneliness, isolation, and so forth. Consequently, those with strong ties to the local team would likely exhibit a more positive psychological profile than those lacking in team identification.
I know this may sound like a rant, maybe it is. Maybe I can only get this point across in a rant. A quiet rage, if you will, one that has been building for a long time, and I finally have a format to use against those who are blinded by their own personal issues.
Now after thoroughly stirring the pot, I give you this as evidence.
You see, I get this feeling some people were not paying attention when Coach Pat Dye asked his players if they would join him in "going back out there, and thank our people"

I wonder just who Coach Chizik was refering to, when he said "I wish I had 87,000 game balls to give out'.

The essence of sports fandom is to enjoy thru the actions of others. I know for a fact, last season when Zac Etheridge went down in a violent collision, I stopped what I was doing, said a quick prayer. When the final play of the Outback Bowl was over I collapsed in my recliner gasping for air!
The point being I felt each of those situations, and was moved by them. So if I say we are the best, or we are going to have a great season, you can be assured of this fact, I mean "WE"!

I have no problem...
with fans saying “we”. Nobody’s going to confuse me with an Auburn football player. My guess is the players don’t have a problem with it either. I try hard not to use it in my writing, but I’m sure I’ve slipped a few times. I figure since most Alabama fans can’t find Tuscaloosa on a map, then I can refer to Auburn as “we”.
I just love those Dye videos, they never grow. Coach Chizik's talks are becoming a close second for me.

As Americans, WE are at war in the Middle East. Am I on the team? Not this time, but that doesn’t diminish my identification with members of the current team. And I wouldn’t expect any other American to feel less connected to the team, whether they had ever played or not.
By extension, the feeling that we are in this together extends to my Auburn Tigers. I get upset when we lose and excited when we win. I feel invested and care about what happens to them, on and off the field. I want them to succeed in life, and feel good when they either get picked up by the pros or go on to lead productive lives as members of society.
Very well said!
I just find it amazing that some people can say they are fans of a team, and totally avoid direct association, as in “WE”.
As far as Americans at war, and without getting into the politics of it, If you call yourself an American, they you are at war with terrorism!

I always say we and catch myself.
But in the end I think its harmless. I don’t see a problem with anyone making statements like that.

College yes, pros no.
I use when when referring to my alma mater. I do object to people using “we” when talking about the mercenary leagues.
Fake Pundit. Real Fan.

But it really is we.
Without “us” fans/alum, there would be no “them” players. It’s our tuition, ticket, merchandise, donation dollars that keep the machine running. Heck, even the fan who never spent a dime on AU contributes by watching the games on TV because the networks can charge more for ads (and pay AU more for the broadcast rights) based on his and other viewers’ eyeballs being on the screen.
Bingo!
That was point I was hoping someone else would make. “WE” are all in this together as fans!

Saying “Alabama beat Auburn 36-0” sounds so detached, especially considering how passionate many of us are about this stuff. Anyone that makes an issue of using “we” clearly has no clue about hardcore fandom. It’s about as ridiculous as making fun of people that pull for a college team whose university they never attended, especially when you act like it’s something particular to one school.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

" … about as ridiculous as making fun of people that pull for a college team whose university they never attended"
Atta boy Zoltar … maybe the truth shall set you free!
Well...
….that’s a good point. I haven’t played “real” football since the third grade in 1968. But I definitely got MY ass kicked in 2008, 36-0. We got beat. So did the Bama fans who watched the 11 sacks in 2005.
……I don’t really begrudge the non-attendee fans on either side. You invest your heart, your time, your interest in a team, and the lose… It’s a valid butt-whoopin. When you switch sides the next year, well… yeah. I DO have a problem with that. And we don’t want you over on the Plains. I suspect valid Bama supporters like Zoltar feel the same.
I'm a member of the Auburn Family.
I’m also an alumnus, but that’s not a requirement. So yes, I say “we” because “we” are all part of a win or loss — player, fan, and coach alike. WAR EAGLE!

Fumbles. It was always Fumbles
And to look at the opposite side of the issue...
All my family and friends know I’m an Auburn Alumnus and more importantly, an Auburn FAN!! And they will invariably ask “How are ya’ll gonna do this year?” OR “How’d ya’ll do this weekend?” Not only do I not mind saying “we”, but everyone that knows me automatically considers me a part of the program because I support it so vocally!

Only 16 so far...
say that they never say “we” in reference to their favorite teams.
I would say that puts me firmly in the majority, when I use the term “WE”

I say we because I have invested thousands upon thousands of moolah.....
in an education from Auburn University and since my Alma Matre is represented by sports teams, clubs, etc…. then I am represented by them and therefore it is “WE” and anybody who says different can kiss my arse.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
"WE" TODAY..... "WE" TOMORROW..... "WE" AS LONG AS THERE IS BREATH IN ME!
