SEC Publications Hit The Shelves
Chances are you've already come across one of the preseason college football publications at the supermarket or the bookstore. For me, it's a sign that football is just around the corner. Who cares if they arrive nearly a month before the official start of summer? It sure feels like fall when you have them in your hand.
I recently grabbed a copy of both the Lindy's and Athlon's SEC Preview. Unlike Phil Steele, neither publication has a reputation for getting it right when it comes to predictions. Still, they are highly entertaining and give fans something to debate leading up to early September.
Doing a quick read of both publications, I came across some interesting prognosticating that you may or may not agree with completely...
- Athlon's did a story ranking the performances of all new head coaches for 2009. Auburn's Gene Chizik came in at number nine behind Washington's Steve Sarkisian (#2, 5-7), Kansas State's Bill Snyder (#6, 6-6) and Purdue's Danny Hope (#8, 5-7). Now I know I'm partial here, but what kind of dope was this writer smoking when he penned this gem? For the record, Oregon's Chip Kelly was ranked first.
- In the preseason national predictions, Auburn comes in at #22 in Athlon's and #27 in Lindy's.
- Athlon's has Auburn finishing third in the SEC West; Lindy's has them fourth - LSU ranks ahead of Auburn and behind Alabama and Arkansas in their publication.
- In a story ranking the top coaching jobs in America, Auburn comes in at #20. Texas, USC and Florida round out the top three. More on this in next week's post.
- Senior offensive tackle Lee Ziemba was the only Auburn player to make the Athlon's preseason All-SEC first-team.
- Ziemba along with senior linebacker Josh Bynes both made the Lindy's preseason All-SEC first team. Center Ryan Pugh was selected to the second team.
Lindy's breaks down each position across the country and ranks the squads and players according to talent...
◦ Auburn's linebackers rank 5th overall nationally.
◦ Auburn's offensive line also ranks 5th nationally.
◦ Mario Fannin is ranked the 25th best back in America.
◦ Darvin Adams is the 15th ranked receiver nationally.
◦ Ryan Pugh is seventh on the list of top centers.
◦ Lee Ziemba is ranked eighth among tackles and tops in the SEC.
◦ Wes Byrum is rated the eighth top kicker.
- Athlon's released its SEC All-Decade Team. Lineman Marcus McNeil and cornerback Carlos Rogers were the Auburn selections. Surprisingly, neither Carnell Williams nor Ronnie Brown was on the team. Mark Ingram and Darren McFadden were the first-team selections. Though he won the Heisman, it's hard to see Ingram sitting ahead of Williams. But I guess an argument can be made.
- Athlon's projects Auburn to face Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
- Athlon's national top five looks like this...
1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. USC
4. Boise State
5. Oklahoma
Lindy's national top five...
1. Alabama
2. Boise State
3. Ohio State
4. Texas
5. Florida
For the record, Lindy's and Athlon's pick Alabama in the SEC West and Florida in the East, with Bama winning the title.
What does all this mean? Really, nothing at all. Who would have guessed Auburn would win eight games a year ago? And who would have dreamed Florida would be throttled by Alabama in the SEC Championship?
In an era of 24 hour football news on the internet, these magazines still have a place in college football. There's something about flipping through the pages and seeing all the great photography and writing that gets you ready for football unlike anything else. I don't know about you, but I'm ready to kick it off.
How many days until the first practice?
Be sure to bid on the autographed copy of Phil Steele's Preview Magazine. Proceeds will go to St. Jude's Hospital and will honor Auburn freshman Shon Coleman and his family. Click here to bid.

I always look forward..
to Athlon’s and Lindy’s coming out, and scratch my head when comparing team pages vs. predictions.
The team pages sound soooo rosey, and the predictions never match.
Still, I do enjoy all the attention Coach Chizik and company are getting!
Enjoyed this one, Jay, Thanks.

Carnell vs Ingram
Mark hasn’t finished his career in the SEC yet so it’s kind of hard to do compare the two at this point – the man is obviously going with the heisman as a factor in his selections with Mark winning it and DMac being invited twice
that’s an interesting Iron Bowl debate for next year when Mark heads to the draft

Ingram.....
will always seem like a beauty queen rather than a heisman winner to me. Gerhart had the numbers and was much more integral to his teams success and I still feel he was more deserving……and no it’s not because of any anti bammer sentiment, it’s because of what each did during the year. If you took away Ingram from Bama I don’t think Bama misses a beat….if you took away Gerhart from Stanford……they would have sucked. Think about what Gerhart could have done with the weapons around him that Ingram had. Or better yet how would Ingram have fared had he played for Stanford and had to be 60 percent of the offense. Regardless I lost most of the respect I ever had for the Heisman when Charles Woodson won it over Manning……the single greatest travesty in Heisman history.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Gerhart was a beauty queen with more carries than Ingram had
and didn’t have to split touches with one of the best Freshman RBs in the nation – but that’s moot point, whether you agree with the voting or not Ingram is the only Heisman winner at the runningback position from the SEC since a certain barner
he got this out of the league with the harshest defenses – also let us not forget the performance the recent heisman trophy winner pulled off against the “number one rushing defense” Longhorns and his MVP in the BCS title game
but all that is “blah blah blah” as far as this argument is concerned – the guy who made the vote takes the heisman to be important to the point that it factors into his opinion – the conversation between barner and bammer is Carnell vs Ingram and while the heisman is a point that Alabama fans will use it is not indicative of superiority
like I said, we’ll have to wait until Ingram’s career is over to compare him to Carnell which will be an interesting debate

If you watched Gerhart run....
you would know that he didn’t juke and jive his way to all of those yards. He was a bulldozer…….and Ingram wasn’t even the rushing leader in the SEC against those stout SEC defenses you are talking about. But the point in hand is not whether I think he deserved the heisman but whether he should be selected to the SEC all decade team in question ahead of Carnell and I am trying to be objective about it but I can’t justify Ingram ahead of Carnell at this point and as far as anything he does from this point on…..well that’s a different decade isn’t it.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
It's hard to compare Carnell vs. Ingram
If you put Ingram’s 2009 stats in the 2004 season (up against Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Jason White, Adrian Peterson), would he have even been a finalist?
prolly not in that group
given the amount of hype and love poured on to USC and Oklahoma throughout the season – the hype machine was far too strong for someone to come out of nowhere
what the hype machine wanted was McCoy versus Bradford versus Tebow – what they got were heisman campaigns from two relative unknown RB’’s and a big push from a DT towards the end – it was a strange year for the heisman but it’s wrong to fault Mark for something he couldn’t control – it was still earned in a great campaign for an undefeated team and eventual NC

Seems like
we only have a good season when these publications rank us low. These magazines tend to kick off the “expectation season.”
Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

just wanted to applaud the application of the word
“picks” in this article… .
i prefer preseason “guesses” myself…and don’t play much.
certainly do not appreciate calling them predictions. that makes them sound much more sophiisticated then they really are.
they are fun, and sometimes interesting- when outlined and decent content is provided as back up. i do buy a mag each year,… yeah, mostly for the writing and pictures.
no matter… these guesses (that will turn into real expectations) are coming from those who have hidden passionate allegiances as well.
the problem i have with all this is that college fball really does need the equivalent of a formula 1 or nascar qualifying run before you can decide what place or rank everyone is going to start the season at.
the traditional assumptions seem to get bust at one time or another during the year and expose the picks for what they really are… just guesses. too informal, without real diligence, premature and unjust to a majority of the nation- sometimes unjust to the teams who are at the top as well.
i would be interested in a study of the psychological edge that these rankings provide… and based on pure historical precedent… what minimum rank must you have to really be in the game for a national championship.

I haven't bought my copies yet ...
… but from this post it looks like (unlike last year) we’re getting a little love. I can’t wait to see Fannin prove he is way better than 25th, and Byrum may set records that will stand for years.

AU will finish the season no worse than 15th......
and very well may finish in the top 5 if the injury bug doesn’t bite us too bad. War Damn Eagle.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Pretty bullish, eh Todd?
I think we’ll be a pretty good team, but I’m afraid some Auburn fans will be disappointed. I say we win 9 games this year (one more than last) and finish in the top 20. We defeat one of LSU and Georgia (hopefully both!). I don’t think the defense will improve much over last year’s unit. How much of that is because of Malzahn’s offense and how much of that is talent (or lack thereof), I don’t know. I just have a bad feeling our defense will be about the same as last year’s.
JD I am basing my prediction on several factors....
first and foremost is the fact that this is the second season of Malzahns offense. Second I think we have significantly more depth at the skilled offensive positions as well as some talent upgrades as well with running back being the possible exception. And I don’t think the defense will be anywhere near as porous as it was last year because of the upgrade in depth particularly at LB and D-line. I also know that the Defense has a lot to prove and I don’t think last season was due to a lack of talent but rather a lack of depth. I believe that there will be some who lament the days of a stifling defense are gone because Malzahns offense will keep our defense on the field alot of the time…..they will prove significantly better than last seasons. The bandaids are gone and Roof has alot more pieces to the puzzle this season.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
And let's not foget the veteran OL.
