Arkansas State Prediction Thread

War Eagle!

We are currently five days away from the first game of the 2010 season, and it can't get here soon enough. It's hard to believe that we're almost here, but the eight-month college football hiatus is finally coming to a close. I thought I'd continue a tradition from last season and set up a prediction thread for this week's game. I'll keep tabs of the "closest to the actual" winners for each week's game. Good luck to all predictors! Entries are accepted until an hour before kickoff (5 PM Central).

Arkansas State is a Sun Belt team, but a decent Sun Belt team. In recent years they've beaten Texas A&M and put a scare into eventual Orange Bowl champs Iowa. They're not a team to be taken lightly, and I don't think Coach Chizik and company are doing so. The Vegas line (as of right now) is 31 points. Seems a little high to me, but those folks usually know what they're doing. As for my prediction...

Arkansas State 10
Auburn 39

I'll stick by my...

….preview prediction. This is a depleted squad with a lot of new starters. Auburn’s offense is DEEP. If we don’t go all Tubervillian and run it up the middle every down in the 2nd half, the offense will keep scoring.

…..Auburn 67, Wolves 24. Not sold on our backup secondary.

This will be a disappointing win....

So often with a new QB, especially one that is supposed to have all kinds of talent, the urge is to do too much…to show why they are the real deal. Invariably things don’t go as planned, mistakes are made in the name of trying to make something happen. I’m afraid we’re going to see some of that on Saturday. Arky State is good enough to make you pay for making too many mistakes and I think they keep it close in the 1st half on a couple of Newton interceptions and a couple of fumbles.Barrett Trotter will come in to add a late TD to make it a more respectable 33-16.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not hating on Newton, I’ll think he’ll be a fine QB, but Gus’ offense just begs a QB to test himself and I think Saturday will be a little to early to do that. Besides I’d rather Newton learn from his mistakes against Arky State than against Ms. State

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

jd,... you predict an AU win?

whew.

i agree though. the line is a bit stout for an opener with a new AU QB…and against a team that pushed iowa last year.

http://cfn.scout.com/2/985042.html

i’m thinking a 52-13 win would work good enough. the possessions should be there to pull the spread off…if the offense can just move the sticks, find a rhythm early, and wear them down with both run and pass…the Ark. St. D will not be able to compete with the AU O past the 1st quarter and a half.

AU’s D should be good enough to stop the no huddle of Arkansas St. (yeah…they too run a no huddle) …so quick 3 and outs and there could be opportunity for BIG offensive #s in this one for Auburn.

I've still picked Auburn to score fewer points than anyone else here picked ;)

Do you remember that spelling bee you won in the first grade? Rock? "R-O-K"?

48-10

G. Kev is in my head......

Although, I do see the Red Wolves picking up 7 more than he predicted. I think the offense will shine, but when the 2nds come in at the start of the 3rd, I see missed tackles by our D which will allow the last TD and field goal of the night for Arkansas State.

54-13

Losses at key positions leaves the Red Wolves in a predicament against a team hungry for national respect.

72-17

I picked Auburn to score the most points in week 1 of yahoo pickem. I think we run up the score to try and get some of the kinks worked out of the offense before we play Miss St.

AU Blisters the Wolves 59-7

Arky State will take a 7-0 lead on the first possession, but it won’t last long. Auburn scores 59 unanswered with at least one defensive TD.

45 - 10

first play will be mario fannin over the right tackle for 8 yards. second play T Zach reverse for 60 yards and the score. just sayin’.

by freejamesbrown on Aug 31, 2010 9:35 AM CDT reply actions

1st play, Fannin for 8.

Second play Fannin to the house, before Newton ever even throws the ball.

oh...

and watch out for the speed option with newton and mccallebb. seriously. who is going to stop that? that is “man stuff.”

by freejamesbrown on Aug 31, 2010 9:37 AM CDT reply actions

GREAT COMMENTS!

keep in mind too… Ark St. may surprise others this year with the no-huddle O…but AU’s D has been practicing against it all off season.

i suspect AU will be in fine condition and motivated to meet the vegas expectations. if Auburn wants that national consideration…they’ve got to win this one by the projected 31. This can’t turn into a replay of ball st. last year… i promise it won’t.

44-17 Auburn.

Newton will throw three TD’s and the rest will be rushing.

It’s what Jim Fyffe used to say on the radio whenever Bo Jackson would break loose for a TD.

Oh! Okay :-)

Thanks. I do remember that but I think I was ten back then. :-)

I just had to make sure no one was dissin’ on BO!

AUBURN 41, arkansas state 17

41-13

I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.

by Indytiger1 on Aug 31, 2010 5:53 PM CDT reply actions

Ark State is running a no huddle this year as well.

So I suppose this creates a couple of opportunities for State, but even more for AU. 54-17

Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

by SandMountainTiger on Sep 1, 2010 8:39 AM CDT reply actions

No huddle - no problem.

Auburn 47 – Ark St 16. Our ’D’gets a safety.

AU 44 - 23

I am assuming AU plays down the depth chart during 2nd half.

by AuburnHighlights on Sep 2, 2010 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

Well...

I do think AU has the perfect opponent at the perfect time-for once. I think with a new quarterback this is exactly the kind of game that Auburn needs. Auburn 45-Ark St 24

by Sparkey on Sep 3, 2010 11:42 AM CDT reply actions

I agree.

However, I am really glad Ark. State has such a tough defense. We need to get used to that before the sched gets harder. I just hope all our guys take care of themselves with some PT, etc. before Thursday night. Also, I read somewhere they are planning to use Fannin a lot. His fumble tonight is disconcerting based on his history. If that is true, he HAS to stow the ball away. All in all, the Tigers were very good tonight and with some kinks worked out over the next two weeks they should be much better still. They look just as good as ANY other team I saw today.
