A Case For More Than One
For any team in any sport to succeed many things must be accomplished. The perfect group of team players must be assembled. Then they must be coached toward that success.
Practices, and personal time needs to be directed only toward team goals, and injuries must be avoided. Many teams try and fail each year to be successful in their sport, only to reach the conclusion that success, next year will be ours!
This year our Tigers are marching toward a goal very few have achieved.
The conventional thinking is, that a football team has to have an experienced quarterback to have any chance to succeed at the national level.
Since Auburn does not have an experienced starting quarterback this upcoming season, it remains to be seen whether or not this year's Tigers can break the mold.
Let's have a look at the Players at the QB position this year and see if we can draw any conclusions.
First, let's start with Cameron Newton. Named this year's starter, he will be held responsible for leading the "Malzahnian" nightmare that is the Auburn offense. The best way to describe Cameron Newton's major college experience is "limited" at best.
Cam played at Florida in 2008 going 1 for 2 with 14 yards. And then transferred to Blinn Community College in Brenham, TX. While there he led his team to the NJCC title going 11 of 25 for 111 yards. with an INT. and rushing for a TD in the championship game.
Now at first glance these numbers don't scream out with athletic prowess, but read this article written just after the Championship game and pay close attention to what his coach says about his ability. He's a winner. Make no mistake about it.
Just in case you find yourself thinking Auburn only has one good QB, think again. In limited playing time during his career, Neil Caudle has gone 19 of 28 for 202 yards. With 2 INT's and a 67.8 completion percentage. He has also spent the last three years as an All-SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient. Last season Neil worked in limited duty behind the resurgent Chris Todd. Leading the offense against LSU, Neil took the Tigers the distance and scored the only touchdown for Auburn in the contest. A beautifully run drive that ended in a pass to Phillip Lutzenkirchen.
This spring it became apparent that Auburn was loaded with QB talent. While all four of these young men were receiving praise from the coaching staff and players alike. With Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley in their second year of learning Gus Malzahn's offense, they have the knowledge and lack experience. Something Coach Malzahn has proved in the past that he can work with.
Don't forget that Auburn has a luxury this year that very few teams ever enjoy. 4 quality quarterbacks! Coach Chizik has expressed many times that Auburn has more than capable backup at the QB position. The fact is that "any one of these young men could lead this team". A very comforting thought indeed.

Good write up.
I’m a Caudle fan, but I think if Cam were to get injured (God forbid that should happen), that Trotter might get the nod from the coaches..

Yea
I’d have Trotter as my primary backup as well.

I agree KoolBell
We can win with just about any of the quarterbacks. I’ve read that the coaches have been impressed with Mosley’s improvement. It would be interesting to see who they would really go to in crunch time. But I hope that is a situation that we don’t get to see. We all hope Newton has success and stays healthy and takes us to new heights.
I came of age...
…..during the era of running quarterbacks. Auburn had Phil Gargis, Charlie Trotman, Charles Thomas, etc. Generally, you needed more than one. Bear Bryant played more than one. You had Gary Rutledge and RIchard Todd, Todd and Jeff Rutledge, Jeff and Steadman Shealy, and so on.
…..Defenses of that era put a premium on make sure to whack the QB in the ribs or shoulders even if he pitched the ball. After a few games of that treatment, you didn’t have to worry much about covering receivers. The QB wasn’t going to be able to throw it ten yards. Throw in the risk of blowing out a knee on a keeper through traffic, and you’d better have several guys ready to go!
…..One of the modern-day offenses that uses a lot of QB running is the one up there in West Virginia. Pat White had his injured spells, as did Jarrett Brown. We may well need a bullpen this year, if Cam gets hit a lot.
…..It wouldn’t surprise me to see most trash time snaps going to Trotter and Moseley, to prepare for the future. If Cam were to go down and we had to have a new main QB, I think Caudle and his experience would get the call.
Good points..
I truly feel comfortable with Neil at the helm. That being said, Trotter and Moseley both need some experince. Arky State would be an excellent place to start.

Neil's decision making is questionable but he throws an accurate ball
I’d be comfortable with him at QB if Cam went down

No, that can't be right
We can’t actually agree on something!

Now jd.....
that’s just mean spirited.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I'll be very surprised......
if any of these guys can excell in Gus’ offense without a lot of game experience first. As much as I want to believe the hype I have seen tooooo many “solid” QB’s turn out to be duds or at least take time to grow comfortable with the offense. Kodi Burns anyone? Mr. Alabama Football, Brandon Cox? Daniel Cobb? Ben Leard? And thats just the last 15 years. All were average at best when they started. Even Jason Campbell took a solid THREE years and two more 1st round picks in the backfield to get to the dominant stage of his career.
I guess I’m saying, I’ll need to see some results before I believe that we’re on the way to a run for the SEC Championship. We certainly have the tools on offense to very explosive but you still have to have a very competent and accurate QB light the match if you want to enjoy the fireworks. None of these guys has a lick of REAL experience being a starter in the SEC. I really hope Cam is the guy because he has that Marcus Russel frame and ability that only comes along once a decade. If he can do the job….well, its gonna be a fun year….but we all know that Gus’ system can be confusing and frustrating to a QB and God help him if he struggles out of the gate and we lose to Miss State.
Not trying to be a wet towel but I’m seeing too much of this “Auburn could go undefeated!!” bunk and all of these unrealistic expectations for a team that has a new starters at QB, RB, TE, DE, CB and Safety. Those are all crucial positions for a teams success and to be learning on the fly normally means some rocky times until they get some experience under their belt. We should be fine, but to expect us to improve on last years win total might be stretch given the circumstances.
As always, I’ll be rooting like hell for the boys, but you got to learn to walk before you can run. Hopefully Mario and Run OMC and Dwyer will take the pressure off Cam early and let him ease into the offense while they run all over the SEC.
Can’t wait for toe to meet leather.
WAAAAAAAAR EAGLE!! HEY!
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
With all due respect...
….there were serious alarm bells on all of those quarterbacks. Burns was a top “athlete” pick, not in the QB department. Cox was about 165 pounds when he first reported, and very ill. Cobb was damaged goods on the throwing shoulder, and never proved to be a consistent thrower. Leard was a slow pocket passer thrown in behind a disintegrating, injury prone line. Of all those guys, put him behind a solid line and running game, and Leard excelled. Made first team All-SEC. Our problem in 2000 was mostly not turning Leard loose earlier. We’d have to be down twenty points before they’d really start letting him throw. Leard’s best game IMHO was the 2001 Citrus Bowl where he racked up 373 yards, AFTER Auburn was down 17 points.
…..I think Leard could have been remembered as one of the greatest ever at Auburn, with a better situation up front.
