A View From The South Carolina Sidelines... A Conversation with Garnet and Black Attack

The one that got away returns to Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday night.

Today I had a chance to do a Q&A session with Gamecock Man over at Garnet and Black Attack, the excellent SB Nation blog that covers South Carolina sports. He answered a number of questions about the Carolina program and what to look for Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium. His answers are below. I reciprocated over at his site and you can read my answers here.

Thanks to Gamecock Man for taking the time to share his thoughts on the game. I know you'll find his answers interesting.

TET: This weekend is a chance for South Carolina to send a message to the nation that it's ready to challenge Florida. What's the mood like in Carolina this week with the fans and coaches? How important is this game to the program?

GM: I'm not going to lie - a lot of Carolina fans view this as a very, very important game. Although the Georgia win was huge and we're happy with the team's performance so far, the truth is that we know that beating the Dawgs is only a small step towards our goals for the year. We remember having beaten Georgia before but, eventually, being disappointed in our quest for a spot in Atlanta. Think back to 2007. Carolina beat Georgia and went on the road to face what I believe was a second-ranked LSU team. We were exposed in Baton Rouge and ended up floundering later in the season. Auburn isn't ranked as highly as LSU was that year, but a lot of us view this game like we viewed that one--as a chance to prove that the Georgia win wasn't a fluke and that we're capable of sustaining our early-season momentum throughout the year. In that sense, we think we're going to learn a lot about our team this weekend.

I'd say the mood for us is cautiously optimistic. The Furman game was a little ugly, but for the most part this looks like Steve Spurrier's best Carolina team by far. We know that Auburn will provide a tough challenge, but we also think that this year we might have the guns to win a big tilt like this. Emphasis on might.

TET: How do South Carolina fans view Steve Spurrier now? Is this a must win season for him in Columbia or does he have time to take the program to the next level? It seemed like at the end of last season, he was tired and maybe didn't have his heart into coaching completely. Is that a fair assumption?

GM: It depends on what you mean by "must win." I don't think it's BCS-or-bust for Spurrier this year. If he can prove to himself and the fans that he can do more than win six or seven games and that he can at least have us in the national conversation, I think most of us will be pleased with what he's done. That means winning at least eight or nine regular-season games; getting a spot in a bowl not located in Shreveport, Birmingham, or Nashville; and hopefully finishing with a national ranking. If he can't do that, I think that a lot of us are going to begin to believe that maybe he can't get it done here.

I'm not sure I'd say that Spurrier is worn out on the job yet. He seemed like he might be late in 2008, but he seemed fairly energetic last year, and throughout fall practice and the early part of this season he's seemed excited about our prospects for success. I think he sees that this team has more talent than his past ones, and that has to be motivating to him. In this regard, I think it's interesting to see how much he's opening up the playbook this year. Notwithstanding the fact that he gave Lattimore the ball a lot against Georgia, we've seen a much more aggressive Spurrier in many cases, one not afraid to run risky plays that he wouldn't have run in past years. That's the old Spurrier from the Florida days, and it's a sign that he's a more confident coach that believes he has the right weapons in place to have the offense he wants.

TET: How important was the signing of Marcus Lattimore? Had he left his home state and gone to Auburn, what impact, perception wise, would that have had on Spurrier and his staff?

GM: I wouldn't have blamed Lattimore if he had gone to Auburn (we both know which school has the most tradition between Auburn and USC), but losing him wouldn't have shined well on the staff. Because of his background and family situation, Lattimore was viewed from the beginning as a Carolina lean who was ours to lose. However, we've had trouble with losing the best in-state players (A.J. Green, Carlos Dunlap) to the glamour schools. Not getting Lattimore would have been seen as another indication that top-shelf talent doesn't want to come to Columbia, even when we have everything working in our favor other than our history. The staff got him, though, and it's obviously been a major coup for us, as Lattimore appears to be the real deal.

We've got a similar situation brewing right now, by the way, with Javedeon Clowney. Clowney is another guy that most people think will come to Carolina if he believes we're good enough to compete in the SEC while he's here. Bama's pursuing him, though, and I think it's going to be key that we make some progress in the W-L department this season if we're going to get him.

TET: What's the primary storyline with the South Carolina team this week?

GM: Well, as you probably know, former standout receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead this week, apparently by his own hand. The news has been a big blow to the team, and it will be interesting to see how they handle the distraction in a high-pressure. I believe, by the way, that they're wearing helmet decals with McKinley's number on them.

TET: What memories do you have of the Auburn-South Carolina series and what are your favorites?

GM: Unfortunately, there really aren't many good ones. We haven't beaten Auburn since joining the SEC, and some of the games have been pretty ugly. We also suffered having Kenny Irons transfer to you guys when Lou Holtz didn't give him carries in 2004, only to reemerge as a Heisman candidate at Auburn and to help Auburn beat us twice in the process.

The 2006 game was an exciting one that had some nice memories for Carolina, but it ended in a loss, so it's hard to get too excited about it.

Nice job by both sides!

…..I love seeing Brice-Williams on TV. Looks like a great set of fans, and red/black is this metal-head Auburn fan’s favorite non-football color scheme. (Followed closely by electric-lime green and black.)

…..Biggest thing I’ve seen on Darth Visor’s tenure in Columbia is that he has not had the guy at QB that can throw HIS corner route consistently. Spurrier’s ideal corner route starts with a slant, then the receiver goes straight downfield for 10 years, then breaks towards the corner. This thing used to COOK defenses in the 1990s, when Dean and Wuerffel could hit it. One of the generic staples of that offense was the post/cross. The WR on one side runs a post, the other side guy runs a medium square-in. The defense would have to pack it in to cut out those constant 10-15 yard completions, then that corner route would be hit with the DB turned completely around. None of Spurrier’s guys at SC can hit that route consistently.

The truth is out.

I’m a closet Auburn fan who grew up in Mobile. I’ll be rooting for the ’Cocks in this one, though.

Great job on both ends...

That was some excellent reading!

The more I look at things, the more I feel that AU will pull this one out, but not easily.

SC is going to come out emotionally charged with the recent personal losses to their family. I hate to even mention something like this as a motivational factor in a football game, but given the circumstances and the reality of human nature, it is definitely going to be a factor. I think if this was a home game for SC there would be no way that we would win this game, but it is not. Our crowd was tremendous in our comeback in the second half vs Clemson last Saturday night, and I saw and felt a change in the team during that 3rd quarter. I do not think that is going to disappear into oblivion with another high profile tilt against an SEC foe on the plains again this week. We will have to overcome a huge burst by the SC team in the first quarter and persevere their opening push, but I think we will be able to do so. I honestly believe that we have been holding things back on both sides of the ball up until this point. I think we definitely brought some things out into the open in the second half last weekend, because we had to. But you can’t tell me that after having every practice, scrim, and peep of the players hidden from the broad view to this point, that is all that we have. I expect to see some new things and I have a hunch what they will look like. Let’s all hope that we have not played our entire hand to this point and that our young ’uns continue to improve!

But they mustn't!

If Auburn wins I will crawl under a rock and live there ‘til I wither and die. Or, I’ll at least hop off the bandwagon and do something better with my time than reading so much Gamecock news. If USC can’t even beat Auburn this year, they aren’t going anywhere. We still have Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida to deal with. You all aren’t winning your division anyway. Clearly Alabama will be taking that. Just throw the game and let us win.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Can't even beat Auburn?

I hope your lack of respect has spilled over to your team. As if Auburn was just some speed bump in the road to Atlanta….we shall see.

For a team going to the SEC championship, I do think Auburn is a speed bump.

Auburn is a good team. I’m not disputing that. However, I think the winner of the SEC East should be able to beat Auburn by more than one score. I don’t think you guys are the elite team you’ve been in the past. If USC loses this game, I expect them to get blown out by Florida, Arkansas, and especially Alabama.

stuff 'bout stuff.

One loss....

causes that kind of thinking?
What if your team plays very good, and our team plays very good, and we win by 2. You don’t think that could be a preview to the SECC game in ATL.?
Seems odd to give up on championship dreams with just one loss. Sure it makes it harder to do, but certainly not impossible in this league.
Anyway, good luck Saturday. Hope your team plays good, and no one gets hurt. I will forever hope Auburn wins though.

especially if...

the loss is to an SEC West opponent and you still have control of your own destiny. I expect the East and West winners to have at least 1 loss this season, tbh.

Sorry, Silver. I have to agree with the Auburn fans here.

Although I’m not at all taking emphasis off this game. Read my latest and you’ll get what I mean.

I agree, the East winner will have at least one loss.

They may have two. I just don’t see Auburn this year on the same level as Florida, Alabama, and Arkansas. If USC can’t pull this one out, I think they have no chance to win the division. Florida will do it. Carolina has too many tougher games to come. That’s just my opinion. I’ll agree to disagree.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Not that my opinion matters but....

I think AU would beat Florida pretty handily this year. We weren’t supposed to be “on Bama’s level” last year, either.

You all went 8 - 5 last year.

Alabama won the national championship, and Florida went 13 – 1. I don’t think you all were on Alabama’s level last year.

Just ‘cause Auburn played Alabama close in the Iron Bowl doesn’t mean they were on their level. Anything can happen in one game. Given the right circumstances, Vanderbilt could beat Alabama. You really have to look at the whole season. Auburn got beaten by one really mediocre SEC team, and blown out by a couple good, but not elite, SEC teams.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Sep 25, 2010 2:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes we went 8-5 last year....

and we were competitive in all but 2 tilts….remind me again how USCe did….no I really don’t need reminding of your 7-5 regular season with a loss in the Papa Johns Bowl to that juggernaut UConn. And as far as USCe is concerned continue to look at us as a stepping stone and I will continue to remind you that AU is a stepping stone that you have never been able to use.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Lol.

I know Carolina did poorly last year. I can freely admit that. I can admit they’ve done poorly for the vast majority of their century of football. I don’t exaggerate.

I like how everyone is mad at me for saying the East champion should be able to roll over Auburn by more than one score, but I never specifically mentioned USC will be the East champion. I said if USC will have a chance at the East, they have to be able to beat Auburn, ‘cause there are tougher games left on the schedule. Carolina could very well lose this game, and have another mediocre season. I don’t know.

stuff 'bout stuff.

I don't think you guys are an elite team this year either.....

but I do think you are a solid team. And if you win the east this season it will be because UF, UGA, and UT are asleep at the wheel……but that being said I expect to win.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

And please note.....

UT has already been determined to be down in a hole that will take at least 2 years to even remotely recover from, UGA is floundering as we speak, and UF has yet to wake up from the loss of Tim Tebow so this may very well be the year that USCe finally finds some relevance in the SEC……but it will be in a very down year for the SECe. Find solace in the fact that you are a solid team but don’t think you are an elite team or program yet. You have years, no decades, no over a century of culture to overcome.
