The Greatest Show on Turf

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is quickly establishing himself as one of the top quarterbacks in America.

Grab the kids, bust open that piggy bank and head to Jordan-Hare Stadium. To borrow a phrase from Barnum and Bailey, The Greatest Show on Earth is at Pat Dye Field for only 13 more home appearances. Tired of hearing all those old stories from family about Sidle, Frederickson, Sullivan and Beasley? Then head to the Plains and experience your own magic.

It goes by the name Cam Newton.

It's not easy coming up with words to describe what Auburn fans are witnessing at the quarterback position. Heading into week five of the college football season it's not Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram or the equally talented Trent Richardson leading the SEC in rushing. It's not Kentucky's Derrick Locke or super freshmen Michael Dyer or Marcus Lattimore. It's Newton, the kid who runs first and asks questions later.

Oh yeah, and he can sling it when needed. He also leads the conference in passing efficiency. Take that and smoke it Ryan Mallett. Where is this Auburn team today without Newton? I can tell you, it's 1-3 and going nowhere fast.

Instead, Auburn is smoldering hot and no longer flying below the national radar. It's quickly becoming a media darling and getting better with each passing week - no pun intended. Even the affable and somewhat lost former Notre Dame coach and ESPN analyst Lou Holtz has taken notice, saying Saturday night, "It's time Newton's name starts being mentioned with the Heisman contenders."

The junior college transfer ran for 176 yards, passed for 158 and accounted for five touchdowns for the second time in his first four games with Auburn. Last week against Clemson was masterful, Saturday against South Carolina was plain magical.

Surprisingly, Newton wasn't completely satisfied with Saturday.

"I think I could have played better," he said. "All the credit goes to the offensive line for stepping up to the challenge. The defense and the offensive line did what they were supposed to do and it showed statistically."

Even Gene Chizik, who's typically guarded in his praise, couldn't hold back after the game.

"You can just read Cam's numbers and they speak for themselves," Chizik said while Newton looked on. "He is a competitor. Cameron is a very humble guy who just comes to work every day. I think he is getting better as a quarterback and a team leader and a guy who can manage our offense every week.

"I am a little reluctant to say that because he is in here. I see him out of the corner of my eye, but the facts are the facts. Our team knows that I speak the truth whatever I think is right."

Newton still hasn't convinced everyone, including those he's run through, over and around. In what must go down as the dumbest post-game quote of the college football season, South Carolina linebacker Shaq Wilson insisted Newton's not that hard to tackle.

"It's not hard at all," Wilson said. "He's a good athlete and all and he deserves what he gets, but it's not hard at all."

Somebody better check that boy for a concussion.

Lost in Newton's heroics is the fact that Auburn is state champs - of South Carolina. It's only fitting that in addition to the American flag decals worn on the backs of its helmets, that Auburn add the Palmetto flag next to it. If ever a championship was won, Auburn has done it the last two weeks.

Let's hope we all get a breather this Saturday when Louisiana-Monroe comes to collect its check.

That quote on tackling Newton is hilarious.

Going to be interesting to see how we approach the early game against LA-Monroe this Saturday. We’ve got to be able to get some guys some rest (Bynes especially). Get Trotter some work throwing the football around. I hope that its a very good Saturday.

BREAKING NEWS: ESPN has several sources reporting that the University of Alabama's 1st string waterboy will be declaring himself eligible in the 2011 NFL draft. He projects as WR with 4.29 speed and a vertical of 12....feet.

Agreed

was he playing the same game?

It's hard to say what's been most impressive. The seamless jump from AA? The ability to hit for average? The ability to hit for power? The 18 walks in 111 trips to the plate? The flair for the dramatic? When you're trying to isolate the most impressive aspect of Jason Heyward's game, there's a lot to choose from, and it's only been a month and a half.

I fully expect...

To see several players get some time playing Saturday that we have not seen.
Which means the starters get some well deserved rest.
I love the title, and the content, Jay!

It would.....

be great to see the entire starting offense and defense done for the day prior to halftime.

It makes me a little home sick…hoping to make it down to Jordon-Hare next season. War Eagle!

I know for a fact

that my voice needs a little bit of an “off week” and I’m sure my wife is ready for a Saturday when I won’t be (hopefully) so intense! But, we’ll be there nonetheless…
Nice article, Jay.

Wow! Really?
Where is this Auburn team today without Newton? I can tell you, it’s 1-3 and going nowhere fast.

Not many people are that good at knowing what ‘would have happened’ in games that have already been played.

If you’re that good at knowing what will happen in games that will played in the future, maybe you ought to think about quitting your day job, and moving to Vegas.

That's a hypothetical question...

with a hypothetical answer which may well be accurate.

The answer lies in just how good Barrett Trotter (or Caudle) would have done under similar circumstances and that, of course, we do not know.

As noted above, we must get Trotter as much work as possible this Saturday so we can feel good about not being SOL if Cam goes down.

Eliminating some of the fear of the unknown… and stuff.

Dear auforlife ...

You’re new to this site so I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt while cutting you a little slack.

If you had been here over a longer period of time, you would probably know that the two people you’re addressing here really don’t need any help from you in understanding the English language … and, we probably don’t need your help with recognizing rhetorical techniques.

If I were to discuss Jay Coulter’s predicate in Jay Coulter’s post, it would be with Jay Coulter and not you.

by xotus on Sep 27, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Settle down, man.

I wasn’t commenting on your use of the English language or the author’s rhetorical techniques.

I was commenting on the author’s football-related post.

And seniority may still mean something in some parts in the real world, but this is an intenet sports blog comments section so how long you’ve been on here does not mean a thing to me.

WDE!, even to you.

“That’s a hypothetical question… with a hypothetical answer which may well be accurate”.

Better quit while you’re ahead, boy, before I ask you wtf a hypothetical answer is.

O, I don't know ...

… if, by rough, you mean giving someone a couple chances to cut his loses and own his own words … then yes it may have been rough for him.

Other than that, no I wasn’t deliberately rough on him in a way i would be rough on some of these buttinsky bammer trolls that come in here from time to time. I reserve my name-calling for them.

How

are you doing in the TET Pick Em? Just curious because I didn’t see your name on there. Please don’t tell me you didn’t participate, such flowery talk of Vegas and all.

Good write up Jay

But I did think this was funny…

Lost in Campbell’s heroics is the fact that Auburn is state champs – of South Carolina.

Tell me you don’t have Jason Campbell on the brain while thinking about Newton.

by HarveyBirdmanAAL on Sep 27, 2010 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

Harvey....

I can’t speak for Jay but as far as I’m concerned Newton doesn’t remind me of Campbell in the least. Tebow? Yeah. Matt Jones (Rkansas)? Somewhat. Pryor (OSU)? Definitely. But the only resemblance to Campbell is skin color and the color of his jersey. And that is no slight towards Campbell it’s just that Campbell was a somewhat slow pocket passer and Newton runs like Tebow but with much better passing ability.

by Todd92 on Sep 27, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh I agree completely.

That’s why it was funny that he slipped Campbell in there. The two do look a lot alike, but that’s where the comparison ends.

Cam(pbell/ Newton)

Do you remember that spelling bee you won in the first grade? Rock? "R-O-K"?

Good catch Harvey...

You know, in the deep recesses of my mind I must have been thinking of Campbell or like jd said, maybe I was thinking Cam. Who the hell knows with my brain. I proofed it four times and missed it each time. Oh well, I’ll change it now.

You should drink a good single malt scotch....

in fact at least 3 or four fingers of Glenfiddich would suffice, before you proof your papers. Now I can’t guarantee that you’ll avoid such mistakes in the future but you will have more fun proofing your work. It works for me.

It looks like you guys have found a qb!

What do you think about your chances of making it to the Iron Bowl undefeated?

Personally

I dont see it happening. I tend to take it a week at a time though.

Unlike most of the AU fans

that I witnessed this past Saturday, I was actually pulling for Bama against the Razorbacks. In the (highly) unlikely event that AU makes it to the Iron Bowl undefeated, I want us to face Bama while Bama is still #1 in the country — Wow, what an Iron Bowl that would be!

DWWD -- WDE!

by ATL_AU_FAN on Sep 28, 2010 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

That absolutely would be amazing!

Tough road ahead, for both of us though. It’s tough in the SEC when practically anyone can sneak up on you at any point in the year. Looking at yall’s schedule, the toughest games remaining appear to be LSU and Arky. LSU qb situation is horrible, and if you hit Mallett a few times you greatly weaken Arky. I would say the odds are in yall’s favor, if Newton can stay healthy.

I think if we can get through the next 2 weeks we will have a pretty good shot. It’s gona be tough though.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

Wouldn't you

want to hedge yourself a loss here or there just in case we’re not undefeated when we meet said team? :-)

Great stuff jay

It’s scary to think where we would be without Cam. It’s not offten you see a player that has that much of an affect on a game. I just hope that the rest of the offence continues to grow and some else is ready to step up when it comes time. I think that can be dyer but time will tell. War eagle everybody

by Johnnycolorado on Sep 27, 2010 8:43 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Auburn wouldn't be that bad.

The Tigers are much more of an all-around team than what people realize. If Trotter came in, the team would look different, but it would not look bad and it would pose a whole new set of problems for defenses.
