Long Holiday Weekend of College Football in the Books
Man, you couldn't ask for any better weather this weekend to kick off the start of the season. Saturday temps dropped significantly and had a certain crispness in the air uncharacteristic of early September in the south land. Not to mention that we had games all holiday-weekend long--from Thursday through Monday, since the NFL waits until this weekend to get started. Our eight-month long wait is over and did we ever get off to an exciting start this weekend.
Even as I write this thread, Boise State and Virginia Tech are playing on the national stage, and at least for the Broncos, the exposure is a rare occurence outside the bowl season. As Tony Barnhart mentioned today, the one-game hype is typical for the Broncos, whose schedule is basically one or two games long--including the bowl game. Although ranked #3 in the pre-season AP Poll, Boise State has two regular season games against BCS opponents, tonight's and against Oregon State in two weeks. With current rankings, their schedule is ranked 100th in the country. Yea, these guys are good, but I don't want to see them cruise through the rest of their weak WAC season and then get to wait for some battered SEC or Big 10 team to meet in the national championship game. Count me among the traditionalists that Tony mentions who don't think Boise gets tested during the year the way that BCS conference teams do.
Cupcakes or not, at least we didn't have the same kind of weekend that Ole Miss did. What an up-and-down week they had. First, Jeremiah Masoli won his appeal with the NCAA and was cleared to play for the Rebels this season, albeit a little too late to meaningfully prepare for the opener with Jax State (see, if you're in Alabama, you can refer to them as 'Jax' State, provided you just don't loseto them, then they're MR. Jacksonville State, sir!) Now, after the double overtime loss, which included a few TD drives in a row, coupled with a final 4th and 15 Hail Mary AND the 2-point conversion to win it, the rest of the SEC await the Rebels to perform some sort of southern-fried version of a ritual disembowelment. Sister SB Rebel blog Red Cup Rebellion is reflecting, after posting an expletive-laced rant, and that was just in the two lines of the post. They've customarily offered Houston Nutt up for those holding the long knives, which is way too predictable. Some compare it to Alabama-ULM from 2007. No, it's much worse than that. Regardless, maybe not everybody with a computer should have a CFB blog. Guys, if I ever melt down like that, someone just take me out behind the barn and shoot me, or send me out drinking with Damon Evans. Maybe Ole Miss was looking ahead to the national premier of this:
Watching the game on TV this weekend, it looked like we had a pretty good turnout until the camera finally panned into the outer part of the upper decks sometime in the 2nd quarter and showed what I dreaded: empty seats. You hate to see that, especially on opening weekend and with all the excitement coming with this season, but I guess I'd be a hypocrite to complain about it while my arse was parked in my living room on my couch. I had heard that season ticket sales were down and I knew of some fans who decided to stop purchasing season tickets, but it didn't hit home until I read this article in the Birmingham News that season tickets sales are down everywhere in the country, even in the SEC. Who would have thunk it?
Actually, it's not that hard to wrap your head around. The economy sucks, people have no money and athletic departments everywhere are raising ticket prices, increasing the required donation amounts and further complicating the already Byzantine procurement process. Auburn claims to have sold 60,000 tickets, which they say is down 3% from a year ago. One season ticket costs $445 plus a minimum donation of $220, per ticket. And you thought Ticketmaster was a racket. Alabama's sales are up 11% to 60,634 (sounds like one of us rounded some numbers off). The Tide's season ticket costs $375 with a donation of $80. No mention was made about how many seats that leaves, once you factor in sky box seating and such.
I'll tell you this much: If Auburn had tickets to sell, they surely did a poor job advertising that fact to alumni in the Atlanta area, either directly or through various groups, clubs or organizations--hell, even blogs. If this was my business and I had the kind of networking web that even we bloggers provide, I'd get the word out there. It's cheap advertising. If you're too embarrassed to do that, well, maybe you need to rethink your whole ticket sales process again.
And one last note: in between watching Lester Miles and LSU try their best to give one away in the GA Dome (yea, I was channel-surfing a little) and even watching Tommy Tuberville do his best to give one away to SMU on Sunday, I did catch the end of the Navy-Maryland game this afternoon. Now, everyone knows I like the rushing game, but you just can't appreciate how well-crafted and diverse Auburn's spread offense is--even being predicated on rushing--unless you saw Navy's last drive to try and beat the Terps. It went about 80 yards and took 14 plays and lasted around 10 minutes of game time, 40 minutes in actuality. It was like watching paint dry. There was not a single pass, and most of the options were to the fullback up the middle. Navy tried to win it on the last play, 4th and goal from the two. They failed, but you have to give the tortoise that is Navy's offense credit for going for the win rather than kicking the field goal for a tie. Overtime might have taken all night! See you for the short week against State Thursday night!

No question on the poll question.
……We have a punt returner again, AND a deep threat in one guy! Carr’s no longer a Cadillac with no gas! Thorpe is working hard on replacing Larry “toast” Melton in Auburn infamy.
Agreed.
I think people are getting a little ahead of themselves saying Dyer had the better game.

I said Q. Carr as well....
He gave me confidence in punt returns again.

New Ticket Plan
FYI: I rec’d an e- from AU yesterday offering a ticket book to the remaining 7 home games for $405.
WDE!
Where were the seats?
Or do they make you call in to find out? Certainly they must be upper deck.

It linked me to auburntigers.com...
where there is an interactive stadium map. It indicates availability in Sections 14,15,16,35,45 & 46 plus both Upper Decks.

not bad...i say go for it.
i was on the plains this weekend… and was also VERY surprised at the open seats Saturday…
still, the energy at Jordan -Hare was great. my son and i had a great time at the amphitheater pep rally on Fri. night, Tiger Walk and good pregame Aubie sightings, … fantastic beer drinkin and football throwing with ol’ pals,… beer box sleddin’…
the team looked pumped at the Tiger Walk.
the game:
AU O: would have liked to have seen some more traditional running plays where the AU Oline could just dominate the L.O.S. and open holes for Fannin or Dyer.
I also thought the short to mid-range pass game was largely not happening. i wondered if Newton tended to go through his progression of deep threat recievers then just opted to always run insted of looking shorter. this was a bit of a disappointment, because we certainly were in 4 wide sets quite often…and the opportunities were there. i was excited going in to see this 6’-6" use the vision to really open up this lutz, e smith and burns game more…but it didn’t happen in wk 1.
still, the AU Oline looked strong despite some penalties… and cam was so much fun to watch.
AU D: my impression was that the ark st. used the 3 step drop to avoid problems of being beat up front all night long. the short pass game was on…and i thought thorpe and bell had weak games…over and over again trailing receivers. on certain plays, we were lucky the QB was locked in on the short pass game…because there were WR open deep.
i did like the promise of the AU LB blitzing… i recall freeman getting a sack and there were a good many TFL… but the LBs didn’t help as much with the short pass game as i thought that bates and freeman would.
there were a couple of fantastic play calls: PA TD pass to fannin when he finally got in the game…the entire D played the run
…and i thought the caudle play was incredibly seamless and fluid in the context of the drive… a great call.
individual performances that stood out: "Q"carr- this guy could really ramp up and become a BIG time all-purpose guy for AU this year…wonder if he should try out for those end arounds in lieu of Tzac, newton, dyer, also liked craig sanders’ special teams coverage- how could he be the first guy to the ball carrier? he is a beast.
where were they?: fannin running the ball?, Tzac?, HBs: burns, e smith, & Lutz… no touches?!
i thought shoemaker wasn’t overly impressive… avgd 39 yds. / kick.
what a great long weekend to enjoy the start of the season.
got to get more aggressive (less cushion) at the corner position and more help from LBs on quick pass (slants) and the like…
worried about thorpe matching up with the more physical WR we’ll face: jefferies(SC), green(UGA), and jj@ bama. i missed bates’ threat of physicality in the secondary in this opener a bunch.
wappa
Point blank.
If the D plays against MSU the way it did against Arky St. we’ll lose.
Cam Newton and our offense will be great I think, but if we can’t some kind of defensive effort, then we will be in for a season very similar to last year.
Auburn is 1-0, the Offense is 1-0, but the Defense is 0-1. Just a poor effort against Arkansas St. I was very disappointed and worried by it. Of course most of the problems are correctable, but saying it and doing it are two very different things. Say what you will about Roof’s play calling, player production and communication, whatever. There weren’t very many bright spots on our defense this past Saturday and that has to change quick if we are going to make some noise in the SEC this year, or just be Arkansas of 2009.

Defense
Guys, I think we are going to have to accept that the D is going to need more time to improve than many expected.
Personally, I never bought into the hype that the D was going to come out of the gates a lot better, simply b/c of the additon of Savage/Ethridge/McNeil and a bunch of Freshmen. It’s going to take some time. It always was, IMHO
I do expect us to get a lot better as the season goes on and I like Roof. The O will likely have to carry us for a few games early.
WDE!
Jess
agree complete.
i think it is hard to talk about this D as separate “units” because each level counts so much on each other to do its job.
if you’re an upcoming opponent… you’ve got plenty to worry about with AU’s O…
but… after facing ark. st…. i also wanted you to worry about something on AU’s D. a comprehensive unit that also had components that could force you to change what you do.
carter didn’t live in the backfield saturday the way i wished he would…he had a nice game… but he’ll have to be more dominant if we’re going to get pressure on the pass effective QBs /teams we’ll face soon. all the pieces that underperformed on D saturday dominoed on top of one another…each level. we have players in good places for the leadership we need throughout… i just didn’t see it on the field. i do not blame freeman, or thorpe, or etheridge for the issues. for me, it was largely a lack of communication on the field.
there were many ASU snaps that came with AU’s D still trying to find their spacing and adjustments. unlike some of the folks’ comments… i don’t see how the coaches might be at fault for this… my take is that these are realtime, gametime communications that have to get gobbled up as responsibilities of the leaders.
wappa
Buddy Ro....
you hit the nail on the head about the communication and alignments….and while I have already stated this on Acids Breakdown of the game it bears repeating…..AU didn’t have it’s defensive leader on the field and it showed. Craig Stevens is the player who calls the coverages and audibles on defense and El Toro is still learning the Defense which makes me believe that he is not ready to be the leader of the defense. I expect Stevens return to alleviate much of the confusion in alignments….I heard earlier today from someone that Stevens had Tweeted that he will be back very soon. I hope this means before Thursday night.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Agree BuddyRo
As usual , well thought out comments.

65-84
plays run by our offense versus theirs. Of course, we literally gained twice as much per play as they did, 9.4 to 4.4, but having our defense out on the field for 84 plays is entirely too long. Anyone know how many people ran against us last year? 70 would seem to be a round about number.

I think that number is a direct result.....
of the soft scheme and fewer 3 and outs. I don’t think we will see our DB’s playing 7 to 10 yards off the recievers against MSU and I don’t think you will see Roof and Chizik so stubborn about putting in the nickel and dime defenses on long passing downs…..it was almost as if they wanted to put our DB’s in one on one situations. We also play very few teams that are capable of running 84 plays in a game…..that is something that only a hurry up offense does. I kept thinking that ASU must have borrowed Malzahn’s playbook with both the tempo and the plays that they ran. MSU will certainly be a fast paced game and will be a test for both defenses in terms of time on the field.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
They did announce
that Arky St. coach Steve Roberts and Malzahn were former teammates and good friends, so I’m sure there’s probably a little duplication in the playbooks of each.

I can't believe Dyer is leading this poll.
170 to 165 over Carr.
Dyer had a great game, don’t get me wrong. But Carr returned punts well all game long and caught two long touchdown passes.
War Eagle
Exactly...
Just goes to show you, can’t put too much stock in polls. They allow folks a voice and they are good for discussion.

Dyer's the sexy pick...
people WANT him to be a factor because he is the future of the team and they feel this performance can be duplicated and improved upon….that and they don’t know much about QCarr.
Carr definitely had the best game of the two and showed explosive speed….but I’m glad we’d had so many good performances it was hard to pick. Now what would be interesting is to pick who had the best and worst game on Defense!!
On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?
You have a point...
For me, Nick Fairley seemed to have the best game. He clogged up the middle well, and I think he’s a much better player than what people realize. Craig Sanders seems to be under the radar too. I’ll keep talking about that kid-I’m excited about him. I think he’s going to really give Auburn a lot of needed energy. Blanc also looked really good. I am not going to put any of the secondary as having the best possible defensive game. I didn’t see any of them looking like ALL SEC guys out there. I realize Freeman is probably a candidate for worst player on defense but I just don’t think he was out there enough to really earn that. I hate to say it, but honestly, it looked like Savage or Etheridge to me. I think they’ll get better, though. They did get better as the game progressed.
agree again. i thought that the middle was completely clogged up by fairley all game.
the more i see him play he reminds me of warren sapp in body style and athleticism. maybe he doesn’t have THAT quick of feet, but he’s just gotten better and better. we need him to have a HUGE year for us.
depending on what we see Thurs. night… it appears completely within the realm of possibility that this coaching staff is prepared to shift some of these new guys in…
sanders could find himself at the top of that list.
he appears to have the type of energy on the field that the team could REALLY benefit from. similar to herzlick at BC… comes to mind.
i love this match-up Thurs. night. a QB that can run, and another that can sling it…
West spread showdown. drop the vanilla SH#! and lets play ball.
