Playing For The Auburn Family
It's here.
The day most of us never believed we'd live long enough to see is upon us. In a few hours our Auburn Tigers play for the biggest prize in college sports. Thank goodness it's a bunch of 18-22 years-olds on that field tonight. Those of us with a few more years and a little more wisdom would surely buckle under the pressure.
More than anyone else, these Auburn men will be playing for themselves. These upper classmen have endured the lows of 2008, the uncertainty of a new coaching staff and been witness to one of the great turnarounds in NCAA history.
They'll also be playing for the thousands who came before them. Be glad these young men can't grasp the enormity of such a task.
They are playing for Shug Jordan and all his former players. One of the great qualities of Auburn and its people is perseverance. For more than a quarter century, Jordan stood up to Bear Bryant and refused to let him have the state to himself.
Through the indignities of playing home games in Birmingham and other locales, Jordan and his players refused to give up on the dream of football equality in the state. While we are talking about the game of football, these same struggles played out across the state in business and with family.
Jordan never quit. Auburn never quit.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for Jordan and his boys.
You think of people like Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson. Two of the greatest athletes to ever play the college game, both felt immense pressure to play in Tuscaloosa. Like the players on this year's roster, they too sensed something special about the Loveliest Village. Because of them, Auburn is what it is today.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for them.
You think of Pat Dye. Younger readers will never fully comprehend the impact he had on Auburn football. He stood eye-to-eye with Paul Bryant, Vince Dooley and Johnny Majors and refused to back down until he whipped them. When hired, Dye famously said, "We won't fear Alabama or anyone else." In the modern era, he pushed Auburn football back to the top.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for him.
You think of Tommy Tuberville. Many of Auburn's key performers this season were recruited by Tuberville and his staff. His fingerprints still remain on this team. He accomplished something few thought was possible, beating Alabama six in a row.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for him.
You think about the 1983, 1993 and 2004 teams. Because of circumstances beyond their control, they never got the chance to savor a moment like today. Men like Randy Campbell, Lionel James, Greg Carr, Stan White, James Bostic, Jason Campbell, Carnell Williams and Carlos Rogers. All came so close.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for them.
You think of all the former Auburn greats too numerous to name. People like Walter Gilbert, Travis Tidwell, Zeke Smith, Jimmy Sidle, Tucker Frederickson, Terry Beasley, Mike Kolen, Joe Cribbs, William Andrews, Donnie Humphrey, Ben Tamburello, Tracy Rocker, Ed King, Frank Sanders, Takeo Spikes, Karlos Dansby and Ronnie Brown.
We could go on all day.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for them.
You think of all the great alumni and fans. Stories of Auburn people who haven't missed a game in 40+ years. The diehards, who sat through the misery of the Doug Barfield era, endured the Terry Bowden debacle of 1998 and managed to still smile through Jetgate in 2003.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for them.
You think of people like Eric Fullerton. Asked to serve as a groomsman at a friend's wedding back in 1971, he quickly turned his buddy down. Furthermore, he told him he wouldn't be at the wedding. You see, Auburn was playing Georgia that day. Eric had to help the Tigers grab a win in Athens and solidify Sullivan's hold on the Heisman Trophy.
Some things are more important in life.
Eric's love for the University led him to name his first child, Auburn. A few days ago Eric passed away at the age of 64. To the very end, he followed every step of this incredible season.
Tonight this Auburn team will be playing for Eric.
I hope everyone who loves Auburn will stop for a minute today and think about how blessed we all are to be part of this moment. Whether you are in sunny Glendale or cold and icy Alabama, today is special. Win or lose, we'll never forget this moment.

I am more nervous this morning than I was for my own wedding.
Woke up early for work because of the weather and all I could get my head around was tonight’s game.
Definitely won’t have any fingernails left tomorrow!
War Eagle! Beat Oregon!
War Eagle
For today, we are all Tigers.
As a long-time passionate Longhorn fan, I understand the lost years. We buried ghosts on January 4, 2006.
Today, the Auburn family gets it’s shot at burying ghosts.
Many will take the position that Auburn cheated its way to the game and as such will be pulling for the Phil Knight/Nike backed club in Autzen. That’s o.k. and god bless them.
However, my heart is with the Auburn family. My hope is that you cherish every waking moment. Every tailgate beverage and grilled epicurean treat. Every “War Eagle” greeting and cheer. Every salute given to your fellow Auburn supporter. And most of all, the pageantry of the contest.
These opportunities do not come around very often. I don’t need to tell you it’s been well over a half century since you reached this plateau. That’s a long time. Savor the moment Auburn nation. And know there are many, many, many fans who will be cheering their guts out for the win.
As a testament to my support, I will be flying your colors today (see avi) and proudly telling whoever asks…..
WAR DAMN EAGLE!
Good luck and beat the quack out of the ducks.
War Eagle! Beat NIKE!

I'll second that, belatedly
but nonetheless.
My sister was Auburn ‘til she died, ahh my stories are way too long, but I enjoyed every minute of this year’s game, unlike every minute of last year’s MNC.

Anticipation is high....
And all I can do is dream at this point, though I couldn’t sleep if I had to. I too am having a difficult time concentrating on the tasks ahead of me today.
Oh but tonight, this wonderful, beautiful night we are going to have. Well into the night, maybe the earliest of morning the next I’ll sleep. I’ll rest with a comforting smile on my face. The college football world will have been made right again, and I was a witness through modern technology.
Great read Jay.

WAR EAGLE!
From Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo! I’ll be going to sleep at about 7pm local time tonight (1pm back home) and getting up at 2am in order to catch the game. I’ve been dreaming of this moment my whole life, and hope that in the early morning hours I will stand outside here in Kosovo and light up a great victory cigar.

War Eagle...
Wow, I can’t believe this. My cable is out. I’m stuck without TV. This is so shitty. I can’t watch something I’ve been waiting my entire life to see. The roads where I live are covered in ice as well. That’s why I’m stuck. My car is too light to get on the road. Damn this sucks. Still, great story and War Eagle!!
Not that this makes it any better, at least you still have the internet.
I am really hoping that you get your power back! you are not alone in Alabama with these problems. You might have to kick it old school with Stan and Rod. Stay warm! Stay safe! War Eagle!!

If your TV is out at gametime
The game should be on ESPN3.com, so you will still get to watch.
I dispense B.S. and facts. It is up to you to figure out which is which.
Glendale is sunny and beautiful...Victory is in the air!!! Auburn Spirit overflows everything!!!
Up and watching some TV in the hotel…could’nt sleep much last night.. It’s great to be with ya’ll, with the Auburn family and the spirits of all the Auburn faithful not with us any longer…I hear a big War Eagle from above!
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

What an amazing time to be an Auburn Tiger!
It’s going to be so hard to concentrate today. My sis and Dad are in Glendale. I am here in super snowy South Dakota—but my Tigers play today and that is a very special feeling. It is hard to describe-but I don’t have to, because y’all feel it too.
War Eagle! Let’s help pull our Boys through! All In! Beat the Ducks!!!

We are all one in spirit..
it wouldnt shock me if the sheer will of the Auburn people swooped down and pushed those boys down the field. I know Oregon is the same, I can only feel it one way though.

I hope that you saw this....
Note – Former Auburn star Karlos Dansby will give away ten pairs of BCS Championship tickets – Noon to 1 p.m. MST today at the Upper Deck Sports Grill in Scottsdale – It’s a free event and Dansby will be signing autographs, taking photos and participating in Q&A and trivia with fans on-site.
From Jay’s post earlier….I am sure that you did, but you know..gotta help a sister out when I can!

I hope tonight,he is smiling down on the Auburn family !!

I am in full-fledged panic now. Good luck today, it’s been fun talking football with you guys this past month. You have a terrific team. Win or lose, we should all be proud of our respective programs. Enjoy the game, it should be one for the ages.

Same to you GMan...
Enjoy the game. Of course, I don’t believe fans of either team will enjoy it as much as endure it and hope for the best. I want to throw up already.
by Jay Coulter on Jan 10, 2011 11:27 AM CST up reply actions
You are right
This feels like a game I will endure. I want to live in the moment and enjoy my Ducks playing for the mythical championship, but really I will probably such an emotional wreck the whole game (barring a blowout in either direction) that I will not enjoy anything. Ducks win and I will enjoy it the minute the game ends. Tigers win and I will probably need some time to truly appreciate what I have been able to witness this season.

its goofy right? Whomever loses (ducks, cough, ducks) will feel horrible, when it is silly because we both have had extraordinary seasons!! So, I am done being worried. Ready to jump in and ride that roller coaster!

I was done being worried like three hours ago
I started worrying again about an hour ago. I imagine I will calm down again in another couple of hours, then resume panicking a little later and let that carry me to kickoff.

Why are people flying out the day of the game?
Why not fly out over the weekend?

These people got caught, because they were trying to leave last night.....
work obligations, etc., probably kept them from leaving earlier.

Hmmm...suppose that makes sense.
Does this mean there is potential for empty sections at the game? That would truly be unfortunate. Good luck and travel safe to all of those still hoping to make it.
I dispense B.S. and facts. It is up to you to figure out which is which.
yes there will be empty seats unless something is worked out
Not sure what could be worked out. Never done this before

Ugggh, that makes sad and sick at the same time.
If I had gone to the game, I would have had to have left early this morning and would have been screwed. It was the primary reason I decided not to go….to many variables affect travel to trust doing it on the day you HAVE to be somewhere. I never figured we would get a storm in Atlanta but know my luck ……I just thank the good lord he hasn’t taken my power and I can watch the game at home. I was pretty sure I was going to be in my car watching the game on my computer.
To those of you who have tickets and are stuck in an airport, I am so sorry for you. I can only imagine the anger and frustration you are feeling. I hope the boys at least bring home the Crystal for you. God speed and get home safe.
Col.Angus may be rough, Col.Angus may not smell like a bed of roses, but deep down Col.Angus is very sweet. If I overstay my welcome, just tap me on the head!!

Eric Fullerton
Eric Fullerton was my grandfather. I lived with him since the day i was born. He raised me from a baby to the age i am now (14). He was the biggest Auburn fan i met. He kept a LARGE trophy case in our living room just full of Auburn items and antiques. He kept a extremely large wall length bookcase in our extra room area that was stuffed from corner to corner with Auburn Memory books. These books were newpaper clippings, cards, tickets, photos, of all the auburn players and such. He had books A-Z and an extra book labeled “Bo Jackson” on the side. They were like baby books you’d keep for your child. My mother told me he only miss 3 home games since 1963. When he passed, we buried him in Auburn clothes, and “War Eagle Fight Song” was played at his funeral. He raised me an Auburn Girl. So Long live WARRR EAGLE!

Morgan, thank you for writing...
I had the privilege of meeting your grandfather on several occasions. He was a true Auburn man. Eric was a friend of my uncles and I grew up hearing stories of him and his dedication to Auburn football. You are one lucky young lady to have had an influence like his in your life. You can bet he has the biggest smile on his face right now. I thought about him after the game and what he must be feeling now. Your family is in my prayers. War Eagle!
