National Championship Prediction Thread

War Eagle!

It's hard to believe that our Auburn Tigers will face the Oregon Ducks in the National Championship Game one week from today. It goes without saying that next Monday night's game is the biggest in Auburn football history. Fortunately, it's also the biggest in Oregon football history, so you can expect both teams to come out a little nervous. It has all the makings of a classic shoot-out, with two of the most prolific offenses in the country squaring off in the desert. I can't wait!

It's been about a month since our last prediction thread, so I had to go digging to find the winner of that thread. By and large, the predictions were the furthest off from the actual score of any prediction thread since the 65-43 Arkansas beatdown. However, one prediction (single-digit points off) stood out from the rest (double-digit points off). Congratulations go out to commenter UglyJoe, whose 63-17 prediction was only 7 points off the actual final score of 56-17.  UglyJoe is our first repeat winner this year, and the other thread that he won was the Arkansas thread. I guess UglyJoe has a knack for knowing when Auburn is going to go off offensively! Congratulations on your two-time addition to the winners' board!

Game 1 (Arkansas State): Sparkey
Game 2 (Mississippi State): Col.Angus
Game 3 (Clemson): Jumpn_JackFlash (PERFECT)
Game 4 (South Carolina): Todd92
Game 5 (Louisiana-Monroe): SandMountainTiger
Game 6 (Kentucky): AU04Natlchamps
Game 7 (Arkansas): UglyJoe
Game 8 (Louisiana State): buddy Ro
Game 9 (Mississippi): DarthTiger
Game 10 (Chattanooga): kerr024
Game 11 (Georgia): watchupdoc and WarDamnZach
Game 12 (Alabama): Foy Onion
Game 13 (SEC Championship): UglyJoe

I don't know about y'all, but I'm starting to get butterflies in my stomach for this game. I'm constantly nervous, and having trouble sleeping. I'm dreaming about the game. Maybe I need a new hobby! Anyway, I think the key to this game will come down to how well our defensive line can cause problems for Oregon's offensive  line. It's the only way we can possibly stop their blur offense. Hopefully Nick Fairley and company saved their best game for last and they camp out in the Ducks' backfield. If that happens, I am confident Auburn leaves the desert with a crystal football in tow!

So now, for my prediction (drum roll please)...

Oregon 38
Auburn 41

P.S. - Entries are accepted until one hour before kickoff (6:30 PM CT) and if a user enters two scores, only the first counts. Also, if you only give a score and don't designate which score belongs to which team, I will assume that you are picking Auburn to win by that score.

AU 28 – UO 27
You know how these things work….everybody always talks up the strengths of both teams, in this case, the offenses and its the other side that comes to play. I think both defenses, with over a month to prepare, will come out and play much better than expected and keep it low scoring until adjustments are made at the half. Oregon scores a 4th qtr TD to go up 27-21 but Gus goes Kentucky on them and milks the last 6 minutes of clock. Lutz gets stonewalled at the one on a bootleg read setting the stage for a new legend — Cam Over the Top — for the winning TD as time expires. TOUCHDOOOOOWWWWWWN AUBURN!!!

AU_ 40, Oregon_26

i just can’t see Oregon’s D stopping Cam…
AU changes the pace of this game just enough and at critical times to Win.
AU forces Oregon into uncharacteristic 3 and outs and there are a good many possessions for both teams in this one…

i still think that Arky was a better O than this Oregon team who barely beat Cal…and i’m not sure that Oregon has a better D than Arky. we’ll see.

TCU/Wisc. last weekend was interesting. Wisc. came in looking to bully TCU around and got blitzed all day long. AU has the better QB in the big dance though (unlike Wisc) and Newton has proven that blitzing him is one of the least effective strategies thus far.

Newton and the dynamic AU offense can’t be stopped…

Oregon has not seen a defensive lineman like Nick Fairley. Auburn has equal speed to Oregon and a lot more size. Auburn will pull away in the second half.

by AUPapa77 on Jan 4, 2011 8:09 AM CST reply actions

Auburn's Change Of Strategy Works

Gus slows the bus way down to keep Oregon’s offense off the field working clock management throughout the game much like the final Kentucky drive. Fairly and company stay rested enough to frustrate the Oregon back field and keep timing disrupted. Much to the shock of the nation, this turns into a low scoring game. Auburn 24, Oregon 14.

Side note: I doubt the game really plays out like this but thought I’d try something different. :^)

by watchupdoc on Jan 4, 2011 8:10 AM CST reply actions

I actually like this...

Talk about a change of pace. All the fans are expecting a huge score that rivals Xbox games. I would love to see Auburn go on long time consuming drives. The biggest issue with that is they must in in TDs. Field goals will not get it done when you are chewing up clock. The Ducks will get theirs, there is no doubt about it.

If we can hold the ducks below 20 we will win by 20. I do not see the Ducks stopping Cam and Co.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

by WarDamnZach on Jan 4, 2011 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

I like

That is a very nice strategy. I like that AU plays the type of game where they can successfully use the hurry-up and the traditional offense to their advantage. As long as AU doesn’t deviate too much from what brought them to the dance – the strategy definitely has to be tweeked somewhat to adjust to the Ducks.

by KSH on Jan 4, 2011 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

Actually a great plan

That would be a great plan. Who stands more to lose if the game is purposefully slowed down? Oregon, of course, since they wear opponents down and win in the second half (and score a lot of points).

Auburn has won four games by 3 points are less and under 30 points, so they are used to that pressure. Oregon has only trailed in the second half once (against USC) for one possession.

I was in agreement with the “48-31” prediction initially, but as time has passed the one factor that has come to mind over and over is how our defense has been maligned as soft and weak. That has not been the case the last 6 qts of football – they are a nasty bunch capable of jamming up Heisman winners (Ingram ’09, Richardson ’11) and punching out QBs (about 7 this season by my count).

Tell a team they suck for a month and funny things can happen. Ask Nebraska.

We have obnoxious

Auburn fans crashing oregon football boards saying stupid shit like the SEC rule and the slack-10 drools. Everyone seems overly confident except for Sparkey but he obviously has an anxiety disorder. Anyway, this seems to be the best AU board with some reasonable fans. I expect you guys to pick your team but most are picking a close game. Kudos. I actually can’t pick this game and won’t. However, I am much like Sparkey.

I guess there just seems to be too many SEC honks that overshadow any compliments that Oregon receives. It seems that maybe both teams are going into this game with something to prove.

It's really tough to get a read on the PAC 10 this bowl season

2 games so far? It is not meant to be a knock. Stanford looked very impressive in the second half last night.

by dzer13 on Jan 4, 2011 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

It's three games...

but in every game (even the loss) our defenses held their opponents will below their statistical averages…like over a hundred in each game and actually 200 in the AZ vs. Okie State game. The AZ defense played very well despite their offense dropping a turd on the field. These teams held their opponents rushing averages well below their norms.

This is all to say that Oregon’s offensive production is not a fluke. We gashed those defenses for an average of 352 yards, which is above our 300 yard average.
