Unprecedented Hype Surrounds BCS Championship Game
Give ESPN credit. They know how to promote a championship football game. I remember thinking last season's coverage of the Alabama-Texas contest was over the top. It was nothing compared to this year.
When the Disney infused network wrestled the BCS rights away from Fox Network, they made a conscious decision to cover the championship game like a Super Bowl. You literally cannot tune in to any of the numerous Disney media properties (television, radio, internet) without hearing something about Auburn or Oregon.
I hope someone will put a price tag on all the coverage both programs have received. It's safe to say there's never been a football game more promoted and hyped than Monday night's championship game.
While certainly not on the scale of a Super Bowl, the media crush that has invaded Phoenix this week is astounding. Watching some coverage today, you could sense the media outlets beginning to run out of storylines. A 37-day wait will do that to you...
Similar to what we saw during the SEC Championship game with South Carolina, the national media seems to be moving away from Auburn and leaning toward an Oregon victory Monday.
There's no doubt this will be the most unique test yet for Gene Chizik's bunch. But spend 15 minutes listening to the talking heads and you start wondering whether the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense could stay on the field with Oregon.
Looking for any angle to give Oregon the edge, we've heard this week that the Ducks have the advantage because they played in the Rose Bowl last year and are used to the big game atmosphere.
ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd made the point that Oregon plays games in Arizona and is familiar with the surroundings. He pointed out that Alabama was nervous during the first quarter against Texas at the Rose Bowl and had Colt McCoy not been injured, the results could have been different.
What that has to do with Auburn is beyond me...
The name that has been least mentioned and may have the biggest impact on Monday night is Ted Roof. We've heard Oregon's Chip Kelly, Duck's defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and Chizik's name across the airwaves repeatedly throughout the week.
No one has mentioned Roof. The consensus is that Auburn's defensive secondary will struggle. They are not in good enough shape to keep up with the fast Oregon offense. It's all you hear. Meanwhile, Roof has remained quiet.
What few people know is that Roof is a tireless worker. Malzahn gets the ink, but Roof also keeps the midnight oil burning. He makes game day adjustments on the fly as good as anyone in the business. It would be foolish to underestimate his ability to get his players ready.
He knows what's at stake. My guess is that more than anything else, the Auburn defense will determine the outcome in the game...
Much has been made of the contrasting ways the two programs have gone about their preparation for the big game. The media has portrayed Oregon as businesslike and taking a buttoned down approach to game planning.
Auburn has been painted as a team that's enjoying every minute of the experience. Much was made about the team not having a curfew Tuesday night. More was made of the 400 plus passengers who made the trip on the chartered jet Monday and the fanfare that went along with the team's arrival.
Who has the best strategy? It's hard to say. But don't be fooled. Auburn has done its homework. The coaching staff is not letting the team go Bode Miller on us. Chizik has been adamant in how he prepares.
He's made the point more than once that the team must peak on Monday and not Friday. While Kelly has experience from last year's Rose Bowl, let's not forget that Chizik had his defense ready to go when Texas claimed the prize at the 2006 championship game.

I sure hate you let the cat out of the bag...
Ted Roof is vastly underestimated in this game. The addition of T’Sharvan Bell has allowed Roof to be more flexible with his play calling, and anyone that thinks this “D” is weak, is in for a real surprise.

We've got some very fast guys...
…..in the secondary and at linebacker, that should match up well with the Oregon speed. Unfortunately, they’ve all too often resorted to diving at ankles, and missing. They did a lot better job in Atlanta, and the result was a blow-out.
Cowherd picked Oregon to lose 42-14.
Just sayin’.
"(Kelly's) got a veteran team that is the favorite to win the Pac-10. His choice of Thomas reflects only one belief: He’s our best QB today."-Ted Miller....I'd say Chip made an alright decision.

Yeah, that was unbelievable...
he spent the show praising Oregon and pointing out Auburn’s weaknesses and then goes with Auburn. Go figure.
Lou Holtz...
picked you guys to beat us as did Mark May. So, it looks again like it’s switched with ESPN having you guys as the favorite.
The holiday bowl
proved that motivation (and no doubt preparation) is more important than talent. Auburn, you are in the SEC, the greatest conference in the land! We on the other hand, are from the crappy PAC 01. You will beat the crap out of us. Believe it! War Damn Crystal Trophy Eagle. It’s already yours!
If ya can't get your Dick Enright, get your Dick Harter!
Sorry...
That’s not us. We feel disrespected no matter who picks us and we’ve been disrespected too long. You have a great chance of winning this game, but it won’t be because we were overconfident or thought we deserved it. Alabama doesn’t want us to eat at the table so we’re gonna knock the f***ing legs off!
Old Ducker: Your first statement.....
implies that Auburn has better talent but will not be motivated or prepare for the MNC game.
Seriously?
If anybody on this planet...
Thinks that either of these coaching staffs are not totally respectful of their opponent in this upcoming battle, they are friggin NUTS!
Now the media on the other hand…..

While certainly not on the scale of the Superbowl...
actually ticket prices have sailed past the superbowl and ventured into uncharted waters if this article is accurate
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum."
One ATQ member reported that his group was offered their original purchase price plus $10k by StubHub if they’d send their four tickets back.
(They didn’t take it.)
Oregon Ducks. Undefeated vs SEC since 1977.
yeah
There was a report on the news here in Montgomery that stub hub over sold the game and is now offering.g the price paid x3. The amazing thing is that stub hub is reporting that they are getting a pretty solid response.

for 3x the purchase price
I can see alot of people taking it. With ticket prices soaring like they are people are probably taking out a second mortgage or other crazy things to pay for the tickets only to get buyers remorse and realize they really can’t afford to go. The they’re jumping on the 3x payback. I honestly feel ridiculous paying $2200 for ticket and flight only as there are way more important things that money could be spent on like my daughters college fund etc, BUT if history is any indication this is a once in a lifetime event and dang it I want to be there!

War Damn Eagle, Auburn Family!!!
Excellent Article. The biggest Monday night in Auburn history is approaching! I too believe Coach Roof does an unbelievable job at making adjustments during the half. Hope everyone has had a great first week of the new year.

Biases are funny things
When I listen to any talking head on ESPN all I hear is how great Auburn is and how the poor, under-sized Ducks from out West have no chance against the big, bad team from the SEC. Cam Cam Cam. All day, everyday. How our O-Line is extremely undersized, etc etc.
Then I come here and it’s funny to see that you think the exact opposite. I guess it just goes to show that no matter the subject (football, religion, politics, etc.) we are always quick to pick and choose what we hear. Just an interesting observation. Head over to AtQ and you’ll read all kinds of comments about how ESPN is slighting the Ducks. Finally, I’m in complete agreement – I think Auburn’s D decides the outcome of this game. If they are unable to get consistent stops then Oregon wins, if they can get a key turnover or force a couple or three punts then the Ducks are in all kinds of trouble.
Prediction:
Oregon – 10,001
Auburn – 10,000
(At least, thats what ESPN tells me)
What you guys don't have...
You don’t have an instate media standing against you the whole way. You don’t have the team that won it last year telling you that you can’t do it and that you are going to let the SEC down. You see, if Auburn wants to get pumped up, all they have to do, is look at al.com or Tuscaloosa News Paper. We have them with us every step of the way. They stay there and won’t leave us alone. Trust me, they’re going to Glendale simply to cheer against us. No matter how we might see it, there is a strong group against us that is all too real.
for example

and a screen shot of the capital one bowl

The fact that we are doing great right now is killing them. After beating us 36-0 3 years ago they thought they had destroyed Auburn football for all eternity.

they won't be the last of the highly rated recruits to commit to the orange and blue
If you didn’t check out KoolBell’s thread, give it a peek. Closer to the end there is a very good run down of where we stand with our current targets!
WDE!!!
For the record...
I hate the way we are preparing. If I didn’t know better, I’d say we aren’t preparing at all. We’re having open practices? Since when does Chizik allow practice to be open to the public? He didn’t do that all season and I don’t like the idea of changing right before the biggest game for Auburn. As stated once before, I know I’m in the minority. I just would like to see a more business and focused like attitude that Oregon is carrying. Chizik and the rest of the guys do seem to know what they are doing and they’ve brought us to a 13-0 record. I guess it’s just a personal preference. I’d like making sure practice was closed and the players not doing many interviews. Mack Brown seemed to have a much more laid back approach in the championship games at Texas. I wonder if that has influenced Chizik any? We will see on Monday one way or the other whatever I might think.
Relax...
We are seeing what the media is seeing. There is a lot going on behind the scenes that we don’t know anything about because ESPN wasn’t invited. Most of the players that I follow on Twitter have shut it down until after the game…Coach Chizik knows how important it is to have these guys ready to play Monday night…not tonight. Win or Lose, it will not be because ESPN was at our practice it will be because Oregon was the better team on that night.
BTW: Texas losing last year had nothing to do with Mack Brown’s approach to the game…their starting qb sissied out because he was worried about that NFL money. Which left a raw freshman holding the bag, imo.
War Eagle, Sparkey…Payday is coming!

No sparkey they are not having open practices....
it is the same as always…..the press gets to watch the warmups and then they close the practice.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
We are coming!
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

Did we just pick up Calloway??
From uat nonetheless…that would be HUGE!! War Eagle!
