National Championship Primer

Do you think you've watched, listened and read everything there is to know about tomorrow night's BCS Championship? Well, you are probably right. It's hard to believe that 30 years ago as a kid, I would listen to Auburn people complain about the lack of coverage the football team received from the media.

We can safely say those days are over. When the game clock strikes zero tomorrow in Glendale, Auburn will likely have received more media attention in a 30 day period than any college football program in history.

In case you've missed anything along the way, here are a few tidbits you can take with you to the game:

Of the 22 starters on Auburn's offense and defense, Tommy Tuberville and his staff signed 18 of them...

Oregon reserve safety Brian Jackson grew up an Auburn fan in Hoover. Unfortunately, the Tiger coaching staff didn't feel the same about Jackson. As a matter of fact, no one in the SEC courted him. That led to a 2,600 mile journey to Eugene to continue his playing career. Although his family still pulls for Auburn, they'll all be wearing green tomorrow...

When it comes to revenue there's no comparing Auburn and Oregon. The Ducks latest numbers show $59 million in revenue for its entire athletic program. Meanwhile, Auburn reported 58.6 million in revenue on just football...

Former Georgia coach Vince Dooley calls Auburn quarterback Cam Newton the best one year player he's ever seen. That's saying a lot considering he coached Herschel Walker and faced Bo Jackson.

"I would have to say that Cam Newton is the best one-season football player I've ever seen," Dooley said. "If Herschel had gotten the ball as many times as Cam Newton, he certainly could've been, and we tried to give it to him as many times as possible."...

Here's a random thought: How many people will ESPN employee to seek out the location of Cam Newton's father, Cecil in the stands of University of Phoenix stadium? Once they find him, how many times will they cut to him during the game?...

Get ready for a uniform controversy. According to multiple reports, Auburn will be altering its uniforms slightly for tomorrow's championship. Players will wear gloves with the tiger print and AU logo on the palm and "War Eagle" stenciled on the outside.

While traditionalist probably will have few qualms about the gloves, rumors of a change in the stripes on the pants may send some over the edge. My guess is, if Auburn wins, those stripes become the new "traditional"...

With Oregon being the Nike flagship and Auburn serving as Under Armour's biggest collegiate client, it has been interesting to watch the battle between the two shoe companies in the lead up to tomorrow's game.

Not to be outdone by Nike's numerous uniform designs, Under Armour came out blazing this week with a new commercial pushing its latest line of cleats featuring an actor dressed as an Auburn football player.

When asked by a media member whether Auburn would be changing its uniforms for the big game, an Under Armour exec couldn't resist, commenting, "Oregon doesn't really have the tradition and heritage that Auburn has for football. They (the Tigers) don't really need gimmicks to their uniforms to authenticate themselves."...

This season's bowl appearance marks the 36th time that the Tigers have played in a bowl game, which is the 16th-highest total of any school. Auburn has a 20-13-2 (.600) record in its previous 35 bowl games, and has played in a bowl game in 22 of the last 29 years...

Auburn is 12-3-2 in bowl games when scoring first. They are 14-2 in bowl games when scoring 20 or more points...

Auburn has been held to fewer than 20 points in five of its last eight bowl games, but is 3-2 in those five contests. They have never been shut out in a bowl game.

The Tigers have worn blue jerseys in 13 of their last 16 bowl games, going 7-5-1 in those 13 games...

Oregon has led every game this season heading into the fourth quarter...

The Ducks lead the nation in scoring offense (49.3), rank second in total offense (537.5) and fourth in rushing offense (303.8)...

Heisman Trophy finalist LaMichael James leads the nation in rushing, averaging 152.9 yards per game and has a nation-best 21 rushing touchdowns...

Oregon is seventh nationally in turnover margin at +13, and has intercepted 20 passes...

The Ducks are 14th nationally in scoring defense (18.4) and have the eighth-most tackles for loss (7.5 per game)...

Oregon leads the nation in punt returns, while individually, Cliff Harris ranks second averaging 19.5 yards per return with four touchdowns...

Oregon defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro served as the defensive coordinator at Duke from 2002-04, while Auburn defensive coordinator Ted Roof was the Blue Devils' head coach. The two also worked together at UMass in 1994...

Auburn has never before played on Jan. 10. In fact, the Tigers have only played two games at a later date in the academic calendar than the BCS National Championship Game. Auburn's first ever game was played on Feb. 20, 1892 - a 10-0 win over Georgia in Atlanta - and the following year, the Tigers played Alabama in Birmingham on Feb. 22, winning 32-22...

Auburn is 10-8-2 (.550) all-time in the month of January, and has won its last two...

Auburn defeated Northwestern, 38-35 in overtime, on Jan. 1, 2010 in the Outback Bowl, and earned a 17-14 victory over Nebraska in the 2007 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, also on Jan. 1.

War Eagle!

I can’t believe that the wait is almost over. I also can’t believe that I have to work tomorrow…will be so hard to concentrate. I am feeling oddly good about this game. This is an amazing team of young men. I can’t wait to see them play tomorrow night. It will be one heck of a game!

War Eagle! Pluck the Ducks!!

Good job again Jay

Contrary to what RBR says, you are not a hack.

I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves

Massive amounts of orange and blue at the Grand Canyon today

We looked like we planned a home game there or something. Our hotel is about 75/25 Auburn/Oregon from what we have seen. The city of Glendale is covered up with the South! We have come. I just hope most can get into the game

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

Scream for good old Sparkey!!

Everybody out there in Glendale, please cheer extra loud and never stop no matter what the score is. Believe me, I would never stop until my voice was gone and then I would use a shirt or something to make noise. No matter what, I’d be making noise. Please, everybody out there keep that kind of mentality. This is for all of Auburn.

by Sparkey on Jan 9, 2011 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

The ticket situation is unreal...we will try tomorrow, but it is really hard..

we most likely will tailgate and hang out with the other folks that came without them as well… We have massive amounts of tailgaters here, so there is plenty of family to hang with! The good thing..there are lots of sports bars not far from the stadium so if we don’t score tickets we have scouted some prospect landing spots as plan B. We will be at the tailgating party to hang out most of the day. I’ll post and keep ya’ll in the loop on my end.
Also got informed that Birmingham Airport had stranded flights out to Glendale due to the airport being out of de-icer for the planes…a friend texted me about that saying the weather channel had tweeted it…Man…I hope all those get here…what a mess.

I also wanted to add, you can feel the spirit of the Auburn family here...

nothing could be truer than it is a mystical magical thing…you can feel it here…like it is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Auburn people have a determined look…like we wish we could all just strap it on…the FAMILY is ready…and that includes ALL OF US…no matter where we are!!! We are ALL IN!!!

So Amazing!!! So glad that you guys are there to experience it.

Hopefully there will be some TV’s set up in the tailgate area…scream so loud that the boys can hear you inside!

I can’t believe it is tonight. It is snowing hard here (but no snow day for us). I am hoping work is like a tomb so that I can sneak out early.

Have a great day!! Keep us posted as best that you can? War Eagle! We are All In in South Dakota, baby! Yea!

Snowed in in the ATL

I can’t even make it out to watch with my best bud from Auburn—neither one of us can get out of our driveways—we’ll have to keep in touch via cell phone!

Even if I am at home by myself (well, with the Mrs, but she doesn’t understand FOOTBALL or AUBURN at ALL), I know I am part of a family that is more than the sum of its parts—WAR EAGLE!!!

I do not know about you guys...

but sleep will not come easy tonight. I, too, have to work tomorrow, TOTM, but it is ok…I am planning on having lots of fun! I am the only AU fan in an office full uat and uf graduates and fans.
We HAVE arrived, the media coverage, both good and bad, has been ridiculous this season. And from the recruiting info, lately, that appears to be a good thing.
I assume there will be a thread tomorrow night, and I will be checking in from time to time and I HOPE AND PRAY…that the atmosphere will be that of the SEC Championship game. War Eagle y’all…we are a little over 24 hours away from something we have waited our entire lives for…A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
War National Championship Eagle!!

My supersticions...

Or however you spell it, they are going crazy over bringing fireworks before the game is played. I know it’s stupid to be that way, but it’s me. I damn sure hope you guys get to blow those things up all night long! War Eagle!

Sparkey...

I know where you are coming from, but he hasn’t been wrong ONE time this season. I am going to have a little faith in him…while I am quietly nervous as heck for the both of us!

Just breathe....

Slowly, and deeply inhale then exhale..
By the middle of the second quarter, you’ll be jumping for joy, and looking for trees to roll.

I'm wound up...

tighter than a rattle snake about to kill a mouse. Damn, now that it’s so close, it just feels so far away. I’m glad I won’t be at work tomorrow as I’d be useless anyway.

I slept a whole 3 hours last night...

I woke up and watched replays of the Bama game and the SECCG to get me started. I’m tired, but I’m not sure I will lay down for a while tonight. It is becoming surreal and we are still 20+ hours away!

I keep reminding myself of my first thoughts after the Bama game had finally concluded. I remember thinking that there is no way on earth that any team in the country can put us away and that we will not lose again this season!!!

WDE my Auburn Family!!!!!!

She will be one of many in the Auburn family that those young men will be playing for tomorrow night. I’m sure she is smiling down upon them as we type, and thinking of you this very instant :) God Bless!!

BCS game

Even though this games pits two high power offenses against each other, the game will come down to the ability of each team’s defense make a stop and/or create a turnover. Here is my complete position breakdown of the game’s match-up and prediction: http://sports-glutton.com/2011/01/09/bcs-national-championship-preview-2/
