Don't Count Out This Auburn Team

The highlight of Auburn's win over Florida may have been this catch by Quindarius Carr from backup quarterback Clint Moseley.

Before winning his first national championship in 1982, legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno said the worst thing that could happen to a program was to win a national title. "Once you win a championship, your fans are never happy again," said Paterno. "Until you win another one, every year is a letdown."

While that statement may be something of a stretch, there is some logic to his words. There's no confusing this year with 2010 for Auburn fans. After winning a championship, fighting for a bowl bid has been something of an adjustment for coaches, players and fans alike.

Putting all of that aside, Saturday night in Auburn was off the charts. For a team that's been ridiculed, slandered, doubted and straight out railroaded since winning the title in January, Saturday was a time to let it all out.

Jordan-Hare Stadium was packed to the rafters, Tiger Walk was a little more intense and fans took tailgating to another level. This weekend's gathering on the Plains wasn't just for the Florida game; it was a day to celebrate.

In case you haven't checked lately, you are living through the golden years of Auburn football.

On Wednesday, the NCAA took a fork and rammed it through the eyes of slimy Alabama apologists Paul Finebaum, Danny Sheridan and Pete Thamel. Not even the nation's largest newspaper or the state's biggest mouth has been able to stop this Auburn train.

And what about this year's edition of Auburn football? With apologies to Mr. Paterno, the season has been pretty doggone fun so far. I said in late August that winning six games would take Gene Chizik's best coaching effort since arriving on campus.

Check.

There's been nothing pretty about the season except for the results. A winner of 20 of their last 22 games, this football team sits at 5-2 heading to Baton Rouge. They may not rise to the level of the 1972 Amazin's, but this team is making its own mark in the Auburn history books and hearts of its fans.

Who would have believed this Auburn offense would fail to get out of the teens in scoring over the past three games and yet manage to win two of three?

Who would have guessed that the worst defense in America through much of the first month of the season would rise up and hold South Carolina to 13 points and Florida to only six points?

Who wants Chizik to show Ted Roof the door now?

If there was ever a living example of making lemonade out of lemons, this 2011 Auburn edition is it. Barring a major upset at LSU on Saturday, Auburn will likely find itself going for its eighth win of the season when it goes to Athens on November 12th.

Not too shabby.

The unlikely story of Gene Chizik continues. The coach no one wanted has carved out the most unlikely times in Auburn history. It hasn't always been pretty, but it has been one hell of a ride.

The odds say Auburn has no chance this Saturday at LSU. That may be true. But let's not forget they are taking odds against a coach and team no one believed in three years ago and still had doubts about as recently as August.

Bet against Auburn at your own risk.

One year later, time for pay back

Hmm how many points did LSU and Bama put on Florida, 41 and 38 and how many did Auburn manage to score on Florida 17.

How many points did Florida put on LSU and Bama 11 and 10, how many points did Florida score on Auburn 6. You do the math for the score of the LSU – Auburn game.

Good Golly...

…and how wonderful did LSU look against MSU, versus how AU looked against MSU the previous week? That performance is enough to give anyone in the SEC West some hope.

LSU may have it more together, and looks like the stronger team going into the Auburn game. LSU fans might even be able to “expect” a win. But since each X offense didn’t play each Y defense in this situation, I don’t think there is a transitive relationship on which the “math” can be done here.

I also noticed that you formed a new account just to comment on this post. Hmmm, I wonder what that might “Tell” us about your identity.

The math comes down to one thing.

…..Can Auburn find a way to move the chains? There’s not much of a book on Clint Moseley. It’s a chance for Gus Malzhan to cook up some surprises. If Auburn can take care of the ball and move it, a lot of good things could fall into place.

It’s not like this kid is a gamebreaker…He’s just another green QB facing LSU for his first start. We’ve seen that show before this year…

Also, has Mosely been named the starter?

Your point is well taken

However I wouldn’t count us out completely. We have an established running game that really only gets killed if we penalize ourselves (i.e. 1st or 2nd and 20 due to holding or false start). Even when teams KNOW we are going to run the ball, they can’t stop us.

Going up thread a bit, I’d like to note that transative wins don’t count. Only the game Saturday.

Let me say I’m not delusional enough to be confident about anything this weekend. I am, however, delusional enough to think we have a shot. Maybe only 25%, but a shot. I’m interested to see the Vegas spread on this.

by SEC Supremacist on Oct 17, 2011 8:56 AM CDT up reply actions

To say that Auburn has a 25% chance in this game to me means that if these teams played 20 times in Batron Rouge, Auburn would win 5

I don’t see that.

I think Auburn will need to be AT LEAST +3 in turnovers to win in Baton Rouge, and LSU hasn’t been -3 in Turnovers in a game since Tennessee in 2010. This year we’ve been especially stingy with turnovers going +13 on the season.

If this game were in Auburn, I’d say Auburn would have about a 25% chance of winning (even that sounds generous as I’m typing it), but in BR I’d say it’s more like a 10% chance.

To me it’s far more likely that LSU covers the 22pt spread then Auburn winning. Although that spread seems a little high to me. I think this game is 35-21 LSU.

I know how to math.

and admittedly I’m not unbiased. I don’t think there’s any chance of Louisiana State covering the spread. It boils down to if:

A) Louisiana State can stop the running game. They held Oregon and LaMichael James to 27 points. Doesn’t bode well for Auburn
B) Can Mosely (or whoever is back there) complete enough passes to give running room up front? This is plausible. Mosely did far better than anyone else we’ve got.
C) Can our offensive line stop holding/false starting so 1st and 10 remains 1st and 10? That depends. I think Chizick will be very hands on this week, particularly with the D

LSU is just as run heavy as Auburn is (AU is 27th in the country rushing and 106th passing while LSU is 30th running and 101st passing). Penalties are what keep killing our drives (see 107 yards worth of penalties against Arky).

Our defense is stepping up. They played great against an admittedly soft Florida team. They played well against a strong Arky team until the 4th quarter when they had been on the field all freaking game. If we hit those 3 keys to the game, I think we stand a decent shot. And most of it is on the (young) offensive line. I’m praying for some discipline.

If our front 4 have a game like they did last week, Louisiana State could be in some trouble.

by SEC Supremacist on Oct 17, 2011 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

My keys are turnovers and field position.

LSU is +13 in turnover margin and +14 yds better average field position. LSU’s offense hasn’t generated many yards because we work on a short field due to our punter flipping field position and our defense creating turnovers.

Auburn will have to flip those stats in their favor to put LSU out of their comfort zone. The LSU-Auburn Punter duel will be key, and turnovers as always will be key. LSU hasn’t had to play a game yet where they lost the TO battle and were out dueled in special teams.

It will be interesting to see if Tre Mason can help with the field position. However, if LSU get’s their token +2 turnovers, and Wing pins Auburn inside the 15 yd line repeatedly, it will be a long day for Weagles.

I don’t talk a fraction of the shit that LSU’s defensive backs do. Though for the most part, it’s fair — they’re pretty damned good.

provided we don’t win there under the best of circumstances….which I call the Tuberville curse. We haven’t won there since we jumped on the Tiger eye in ’01. LSU has been in the top 10 for this game every year since then and the winner more often than not represents the West in the SEC title game.

For us to win, we have to play nigh perfect and get some help from somewhere…. which is why I bought a new gris-gris over the weekend and a chicken to sacrifice on game day!! I’m gonna get my mojo working on overdrive fo sho!!!

Strong words for an LSU fan!!! What are you #1 or something???

Wow, that took a lot of bravado to predict a victory. But thanks for trol…..errr.. stopping by!! Kisses!!

To be honest if I was a betting man I’d take LSU and give the points because I don’t know who is lining up behind center.
But since I’m not a betting man, this is the perfect situation for Auburn to sneak a couple of surprises in on LSU. And I’ll take any advantage available to us here. For the record, I am hoping that Moseley gets the start since his psyche is the least traumatized, and he actually knows how to put some touch on his throws. Seeing him play Saturday, made me question why they gave Trotter such a long leash in the 1st place.

That being said, I don’t envy anybody playing on the Auburn offense this week, as they are facing a dominating defense. Trotter/Mosely is going to HAVE to hit some passes on 1st and second down to open up some running room for Dyer. If LSU is allowed to stack the box, we may get shut out. I would not be surprised at all if this is Frazier’s coming out party. Its coming anyway and if there was ever a time where we needed to have some unpredictability on offense, this would be the week to do it. As always, we will have to continue to protect the ball and hope for some nicely wrapped gifts from LSU in the process. I was hoping Acid would not have pointed out that we haven’t put the ball on the ground all year. Thats like saying you have a no-hitter after six innings. JINX!! Oh well, we HAVE to go another week without doing that.

On Defense, we’ll have to play a lot of man to man, which I think is our strength in the secondary, but that means the D Line and Linebackers will have to step up their game to get pressure on the QB while protecting against the underneath routes. We aren’t there yet, but I can hope. The D is going to have to continue to improve and hope that is going to be good enough. Unfortunately, even under the best of circumsances, its hard for me to imagine us holding them under 20 points, which is the absolute most I think we could possible score against them.

But then again, thats why they play the games.

“Once you win a championship, your fans are never happy again,” said Paterno. “Until you win another one, every year is a letdown.”

I can honestly say… not so. At least not for me. Living through the 1970s as an impressionable kid who wanted desperately just to beat bama (so I could politely tell my relatives that there was justice in the world). Going to college in the mid-1980s in the new era of Pat Dye… the change was there… but it just couldn’t get over the hump. And then watching as an alumnus in the 1990s and early 2000s, time and again… getting close but no cigar.

Well that changed in 2010. It happened in my lifetime. A prayer answered. We won a National Championship! I don’t feel an obligation to win every year. I just don’t see that as possible. But I do feel we can compete every year. And I hope we always do.

This team isn’t the same as last years team. I think we all knew that going in. We don’t have the play makers like we did last year. We have Lutz and Dyer… but they can’ t carry/catch the ball all of the time.

We don’t have a QB either, at leat not like last year. I do like Barrett Trotter. He is competent QB, competent enough NOT to throw picks… but it’s almost like he is overly cautious, to the point of analysis paralysis. And when he does throw the ball… his receivers just can’t seem to catch the ball. This can play hell on a QBs mind.

I am less impressed by Keihl Frazier. He has potential… but right now he isn’t ready to run an offense.

And then there is Clint Mosely. He has done well for his first start. But he isn’t the end all be all of QBs either.

I think Gus Malzahn and Gene Chizik are getting conservative… to the likes of Tommy Tuberville. The reason… do enough to keep the defense rested. Hopefully we will build a lead and keep it safe.

Will that work this week? I don’t know. But I would never, ever rule my Tigers out of a game.

Anyone catch Muschamps new video that has gone viral? He is out of control. We are so lucky to have Gene Chizik! Muschamp is too much of a hot head. Who would want to play for that kind of idiot??

so much this

I will be happy with an 8-3 regular season given the talent we lost last year. You’re not going to reload that fast. We’re not paying players (looking at you USCw). Next year won’t be great, but we should be in contention for the west. 2013 we should win the conference again. These things just take time.

Agreed

Losses happen, and while I’m disappointed when they happen, I certainly hope it wouldn’t change anyone’s long-term outlook for the team.

We got smacked with issues of depth and experience, and those aren’t things with quick fixes. Still, to be competitive in our match-ups each week is a reasonable expectation, and I think we’re doing that for the most part.

You want to hang with the toughest crowd on the entire college football scene (the SEC)? You gotta’ take your lumps. Sometimes you bring the ass-whooping, other times the ass-whooping gets brought to you. That’s how it is.

You simply need to think like the enemy...

When Auburn’s players lash out and earn themselves personal foul penalties, it’s due to a convergence of negative factors, including — but not limited to: bad breeding, horrible coaching, criminal inclinations brought about by chemical composition of water from the greater Auburn area municipal authority, the inferiority of the entire state of Alabama, and the corruption of years past that can be projected directly on to each year’s team sans consideration for cultural change within the program.

When Georgia’s players lash out and earn themselves personal foul penalties, it’s due to a cohesive team spirit born of a greater sense of brotherhood and familial values, impeccable character and values, and the generally low character of whatever inferior institution dared to line up against the bold and brave black and red warrior-poets of Georgia.

Perspective. We lack it, apparently.

Some Georgia fans believe that old adage about “a place for everything, and everything in its place” applies to people as well as objects.

Even good, ol’ Vandy — whom we all know to be the most thuggish of programs, no? — forgot their place on Saturday, and it was fortunate that Grantham was there to remind them of the noble, unimpeachable black and red spirit.

One man’s personal foul is another man’s “sticking up for a teammate”.

Wait…I just confused myself, being a dumb Barner and all. That argument was used FOR Georgia’s dogpiling of Fairley, but AGAINST Goggins and co. for retaliating.

This is why we’re not good enough to be Georgia fans, apparently. The ethical relativism requires mental agility and a selective amnesia that most folks just can’t muster.

Easy now.

Grantham had the bad fortune of facing the cameras while yelling. The video shows Coach Franklin walking on the field and pointing at UGA’s Shawn Williams – a player who is walking away from Franklin. Grantham sees what’s happening and confronts Franklin about it, getting up in his face but not touching him. Franklin’s trooper (or security guard) shoves Grantham back. That is the only physical contact that occurs. Both coaches keep jawing, and then they stop. You can read Grantham’s lips but only see the back of Franklin’s head.

I wish Grantham had controlled his temper better (and Richt rightly called him out on this point), but it at least helps to point out that Grantham didn’t do anything that Franklin didn’t do. You seen the video of Muschamp’s rant at the refs? Heck, two NFL coaches put this little exchange to shame less than 24 hours later, and nobody’s calling them thugs.

Oh, I know there was something to spark Grantham's tantrum...

This was more a knock on the “ethical relativism” that I referenced among a certain contingent of fans.

I won’t rehash it all over again, but I think you know exactly what I’m talking about. Someone’s take on this was ridiculous, given the preaching they’ve done about personal fouls earned by other teams.

UGA players rightfully committing personal fouls because they say they were getting chop blocked???……OUCH, OUCH, THE PAIN, IS TOO MUCH!!

I’m trying to remember an example to compare that to in recent history….but my bleeding ears have me somewhat distracted. First and Thom can you remember an instance of outrage over personal fouls committed by a player who claimed it was in retaliation for getting chop blocked???

by Col.Angus on Oct 17, 2011 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You guys are funny. The sarcasm is deep here...

This is indicative of a Georgia program who is mired in on field/off field issues.

The common excuse used by UGA faithful is that Grantham was protecting his player.

What the…???

Protecting him from whom??? Grantham?

He was the only one chest bumping… he was the only one who lost his composure. And apparently he was the only one who was oblivious to what his own player was doing.

As someone indicated earlier we can’t see what Franklin is doing or saying. But it is interesting to listen to Franklin’s side of the story during the post game press conference. He won’t comment about Grantham being an idiot… but he does talk about not taking crap from people like him.

I think Tucumseh is right on target here… and is firing for effect. Vandy damned near whipped UGA. It would have shocked the East and spelled the immediate doom for Mark Richt. And interestingly enough… probably Grantham too.

This guy can’t be that bright. He just can’t be. I mean twice on National TV?? He is caught on camera doing something that just won’t sit will with a hiring head football coach.

My opinion: Grantham will not be able to spin this well in December when he starts revising his resume. I wonder how he will be able to explain the Vandy TE that is standing between himself and Franklin? Maybe he can say the Vandy player was protecting Franklin??

Not sure if serious...

I haven’t heard anybody say that Franklin was physically threatening a UGA player, but he was obviously jawing at Shawn Williams. Grantham confronted Franklin about that, but never touched him.

I think that Franklin’s post-game presser confirmed that he started the shouting and that he’s glad that he started it. He felt like Williams had disrespected Vandy and he was going to go say something to Williams about it. Richt said “I wish the coaches would just shake hands and be done with it,” which I think is absolutely correct. Franklin is the one who, instead of finding Richt, decided to have words with a player. Franklin is the one whose bodyguard initiated contact.

Also, what was “[Grantham’s] player doing”? And what offfield issues is UGA mired in?

I think you’re painting me with too broad a stroke. I too thought the “NAH IT WAS OKAY BECUZ OF CHAWP BLAWKS” was kind of hypocritical, and I was reminded strongly of your reactions last year. We’re Georgia, they’re Vanderbilt, and we should act like we’ve been there before. I think first and thom has done a good job of differentiating the situations. Also, I would like to point out that, while I see why Grantham reacted the way he did, and I do think he is being treated unfairly (I think the reaction would be the opposite if the camera were on the other side of the field), I dearly wish he hadn’t reacted the way he did. Why? 1, he’s an adult charged with looking after 85+ kids and he should know better, and 2, it makes us look really bad. Just when we were getting most of the rational fans off our back about “RICHT HAS LOST CONTROL OF HIS PROGRAM” and “THUGA”, now we’re right back into it. It’s frustrating, honestly, because I really don’t think that’s the truth.

On another note, you should notice that today Grantham apologized for acting like a 12 year old, while Franklin did not.

I referenced no off-the-field issues (the arrests are sporadic, some are ticky-tack, and frankly, if they’re not beating the shit out of people or waving guns, they’re probably just being dumb college-age kids).

Nonetheless, I wasn’t referencing you. I was trying to indirectly reference a certain pompous blowhard whose take on players’ on-field conduct did an about-face when the shoe was on the other foot.

Unfortunate, on two counts: 1) the indirect references aren’t so indirect anymore (thanks for that); and 2) someone tipped over the rock you dwell under and let you loose again.

Exactly, though that DUI last week is no joke

Generally the “crimes” have been little more than “I’m a dumb college kid” material. I always find it funny, therefore, that we’re the ones who have a control issue, but Florida under Urban Meyer, who had several kids commit felonies, never did. I guess that’s what winning national championships does for you.

by elfcrash on Oct 17, 2011 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I've backed off my feelings on Florida a bit

Because Urban Meyer left. I think he was a bit too lax, but he’s gone now. Until Muschamp gives me a reason to think otherwise, I’ve got to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Although, in a rare moment of agreeing with you, I do think his outburst was rather unfortunate (for the same reason you mentioned in regard to Grantham).

And I wasn’t aware of a DUI by a Georgia player. DUI’s cross the line between “dumb” and “dangerous” — those I don’t brook by either.

by first and thom on Oct 17, 2011 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Col: I wasn't going to bring it up, but I'll give you my take. I don't want to rehash last year.

I think this case is different, and here are my reasons

(1) Geathers punched the guy who clipped him right after he clipped him. Fairley speared the QB on a different play, even though the QB had nothing to do with any dirty play on Fairley.

(2) Fairley got chopped and it was a foul. It got called as a foul, and all chop blocks are dangerous. No excuses. However, not all fouls are equal. There is a degree of difference between a chop block on the line and the kind of clip thrown at Geathers. It is at least possible that the chop on Fairely (like all chops on the line) is a blown assignment between linemen, whereas the post-play, off-the-ball clip of Geathers has no sporting explanation at all.

(3) Throwing a punch is less dangerous that spearing a guy in the back at a dead run. You’ll notice on the replay that Franklin (who sticks up for his guys with the best of ‘em) doesn’t yell at the refs about Geathers’s punch. That clip was dirty, dirty and nobody can justify it. The punch in retribution was out of line, but decidedly less dangerous than Fairley’s spear. Reasonable minds can disagree.

I’m not trying to say “OMG Fairley is the worstest EVAH” But I am trying to draw what I think is a measured distinction between Geathers’s punch and Fairely’s spear. Remember – you brought it up. I’d be happy to let it go and talk LSU instead.

by first and thom on Oct 17, 2011 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Turrrible.

Florida’s had our number for 20 years and we just scraped our a chippy and lucky win against Vanderbilt. No disrespect to the Commodores, who played a fine game, but UGA had several chances to put that game away and just couldn’t do it. FGs instead of TDs, special teams disasters (2 missed FGs, KR for a TD, blocked punt, fake punt converted for 40 yards), and suddenly sloppy run defense are not a good combination.

But we get a lot of guys back in Jax. ILB Ogletree comes back, as does OLB Washington. Mitchell and Crowell should be healed up.

We can beat Florida – especially without Brantley – but I have no confidence that we will. I would be a fool to have such confidence.

Reality to this sunshine party...

LSU will cover the spread and then some. The offense is now the problem but the LSU offense isn’t bad this time either. LSU also runs some non-traditional stuff that Auburn’s defense can’t stop. Calm down from the optimism of beating a Florida team without their starting quarterback. Look, Auburn will give UGA and UA all they can handle and in the case of UGA, I’ve got us picked to win that one. LSU at LSU though is a deadly trap not for them but for us. We’ll beat Ole Miss in a close one too. That said, LSU wins this one going away. The next few years though, Auburn really will be a team you can never count out with the deep athletes we’ll have at every position. This offensive line will be much better next season as well. Unfortunately, you’re going to see them get dominated all game long.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Look at the stats I provided earlier

We’re barely better than them rushing, they’re barely better than us passing (27th vs 30th and 101st vs 107th respectively). It’s about field position and penalties. If we win those, we can stand a chance. How many rushing yards did Lattimore have on this defense when Garcia obviously could barely keep the ball inside the stadium? I’m far from convinced we win, but I think our D can hold them and we cover the spread for sure.

by SEC Supremacist on Oct 17, 2011 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

You're looking at the wrong stats.

LSU’s offense can only cover the ground between them and the goaline.

LSU’s average field position is 14 yards better than the opposing teams.

Assuming each team has 10 possessions in a game, thats 14yds x 10 = 140 hidden yds to LSU’s favor.

Look at LSU’s pts/game vs Auburns. Those are the stats you should use.

Pundits have been looking at LSU’s total offensive numbers for the last 2.5 years and been unable to explain our success. It takes more than a first order analysis of this team to see why they are so dominant.

Just found some things specifically related to field position

LSU average punt: 41.8 yds
AU average punt 41.2 yds

LSU penalties per game: 55 yds (49 when at home)
Auburn peanlties per game: 65 yds (66 when away)

LSU tackles for loss: 51 for 174 yds (allowed 30 for 82 yds)
Auburn tackles for loss: 45 for 151 yds (allowed 53 for 164 yds) this is going to be crucial for our o line

LSU 1st Downs: 143 (roughly 20.5 per game)
AU 1st Downs: 126 (18 per game)

Auburn’s ability to continue rushing and get that 1st down is what’s crucial. I don’t know that we’ll be able to do that, but I can hope.

Man this is like trying to compare a Fiat to a Ferrari!!
No way I’m digging into stats to find an advantage in this game…..because there is none.
As in race between a Fiat and a Ferrari, the Fiat only wins if:
a) the ferrarri driver shows up late
b) the pit crew is overconfident and forgets to fill up with gas
c) the ferrari dumps its transmission

We can win the game, but unless a radically different Auburn team shows up, it will require LSU to cause more harm to themselves than to us. It could happen, if Blake can play and he and Moseley establish some chemistry in practice this week…….and Jarret Lee reverts to ’08 form.

…..But he doesn’t have Darvin Adams, Kodi Burns and Terrell Zachary locking the cornerbacks up. When McCalebb gets to the corner this year, there’s often the other team’s fastest defenders waiting on him.

He's still fast no doubt

But he just seems a step slower…Although it could be my imagination given what you’ve just described.

Cam Newton was fast enough to make everybody else faster.

We had to cheat in on him, giving OMC a step on the outside pursuit everytime.

Good point

And it could be that that is part of the difference from last year to this year.

I’m still happy with O-Mac overall, as he’s fast enough, can still take a hit when he needs to, blocks when the situation calls for it, and (most importantly) holds on to the ball.

(not that I had any recently-departed back of ours in mind)

I don't think anybody's down on him.

With the passing game limping a bit, his ability to stretch the field horizontally is more important than ever. And, except for maybe Dyer, nobody would benefit more from Auburn finding some success down the field than Onterio.

by first and thom on Oct 17, 2011 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

With Dyer

It might be of benefit too. I’m starting to worry a bit about the possibility of injury, given how much he’s being run between tackle.

It’d be awesome for him to rack up yards and see him break a record — but after that SC game and his ankle getting tweaked, I’ve been worried. Seeing what happened to Lattimore didn’t help, either.

We ask a lot from these young men.

It really takes two guys to keep a running game intact through the schedule.

by first and thom on Oct 17, 2011 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, which makes Georgia's ability to bounce back

that much more surprising, given the burden that a true freshman (Crowell) was asked to take on.

One by one, all of the “definite positives for Auburn winning” against Georgia have evaporated. Were it not for the loss to South Carolina, I’d say the East was a done deal.

No I think he is tired of rehabbing.

OMac looks like to me like he rather get pushed out or tripped up for a loss of 2 or no gain, than take a shot to the upper body for two yards.

… and he stops. Mike Dyer he ain’t.

And why we are talking…

Ladarius Phillips… I am soooo dissappointed. During the UF game on a 3rd and 1 …. he got mowed over by a much lesser player. The dude is 290 pounds for crying out loud. If he can’t block…. make him a defender. Maybe he could learn to tackle.

Who the heck gets married on a Saturday during football season? It's just mean.

Mr. ToTM and I got married on a Friday night, so we could go to the Arky game the next day. In all fairness, we did not have any high school aged individuals who would miss high school football festivities….

It's not about the odds.

If the teams just line up and execute with normal efficiency, LSU is the prohibitive favorite. Therefore, Auburn is likely going to try to bring new wrinkles to the game and get LSU off its offensive gameplan. LSU’s right hand is stronger than Auburn’s right (generally speaking), so I wouldn’t be surprised if Auburn tries to make this a game of left hands.

I commented earlier this season that it looked like Roof and Malzahn were scheming without reference to each other. Specifically, it seemed like Malzahn was running a wide-open, high-risk offense that was scoring a lot of points but which was simultaneously putting the defense in bad spots. The offense couldn’t win the games by itself. After Miss St, it seems like the offense pulled up a little bit and integrated the game plan with the defense. Auburn seems to be aiming for longer drives, not just the big plays that appeared in Auburn’s early games. Anybody else see that?

by first and thom on Oct 17, 2011 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes,

I think that that’s fair. But I also think that the Offense is young and benefits from sustained drives, so I’m not sure that it’s Offense and Defense purposefully working together in harmony, as much as these two units are starting to work in a way that is harmonious. If that makes sense….

by Tiger on the mountain on Oct 17, 2011 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

No, I think the difference...

is that our QB has regressed. Our offensive production abrubtly stalled at the same time Trotter’s ability to find an open receiver disappeared. Our longer drives are due to leaning on the running game more. I wouldn’t necessarily say we have been running more plays (except for Sackerlina) but we have been burning more clock because there is more running and less passing.
I think the defense got better once we went to a more aggressive scheme to shut down the run and pressure the QB.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

by Col.Angus on Oct 17, 2011 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, we had the smash corner to Stallworth..

…and the post to Blake going earlier in the year. Instant score! We really weren’t driving the ball any better then than now. Just getting more big plays. Now Blake is hurt and Trotter is mired in a slump.

…..I can’t tell you how excited I was to see Moseley hit that deep cross to Lutzenkirchen Saturday. I didn’t think much of Clint after watching A-Day, but the players said that he had a bad day. Turns out they were right, at least upon a limited review.

There is a part of me that agrees....

But there is another part that remembers the cigar game…when we didn’t have a chance in hell and should have lost by 50. We ended up winning 41-7 or some damn thing.

I NEVER rule my tigers out of a game.

LSU could be ripe for a quick drop from the top ten.

It can happen.

All Auburn qb's need to be ready for this game.

This game is going to take serious discipline, hard nose D, luck, and it will require our Offense to not only consistently make 1st downs, 3rd down conversions, but SCORE. I’m excited! It will be fun to see how this young team handles what seem to be insurmountable odds. Time to break Tubb’s curse! War Damn Eagle!!

Before you guys start screaming I'm such a negative man...

I’m not really being all that negative. I think we’ll beat UGA in a really really close one and I think we’ll beat Samford and Ole Miss both by double digits. I just look at what’s coming this weekend and I highly think we’ll be crushed. Had Auburn not won the national championship I’d be more inclined to give us a shot for the upset but the national championship still puts a target on your back. I hate losing to LSU most of all and I wish their school would just go out of college football altogether. I wouldn’t miss them or their fans not one bit. I hate their colors, I hate their carpet, and everything about them. They’re a downright disgrace to Tigers with the color purple they have. I can’t stand their white-shirts at home that’s so ridiculous. I despise and loathe LSU with more of a passion that I can accurately put into words. That said, I will give the devil his due they’re really good this year and we’re just a little above average.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

How improved is the Auburn Defense?

Yes it was Florida, and I was at the game. Auburn had the run covered and were quick on the corners. I only saw them get burned once on a long play and think goodness, Brantley over threw by twenty yards. I do not see Auburn winning but if LSU can’t score
they will not be able to cover the spread. If Auburn’s offense comes through who knows?
I do not count on that against that defense! Look to see our special teams perform
at a high level although Mason is out with injuries. This team full of freshmen and sophmores are learning the game of football at the S.E.C level and will be fun to watch next year as we add even more talent, depth and experience! LSU and Alabama both will be vacating a lot of their experienced players to the NFL at the end of the year.

by aplains74 on Oct 17, 2011 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

If you saw Brantley pass a ball you watched a different game than the rest of us.....

Just kidding of course…..although Brantley didn’t play. To answer your question the Defense is vastly improved but still has a long way to go to get to the point that we need them to be….especially with the Offense sputtering. The D-line has shown it can put pressure on the QB and the LB is probably the most improved unit…..
