LSU Beatdown Will Unleash the Auburn Tigers

Many NCAA teams will have their work cut out for them this Saturday but none more than Ole Miss. The worst thing that could have happened to them is having to play Auburn after their trip to Death Valley. The Auburn Tigers haven't laid a blowout loss on a team this year until this week but that is about to change. Ole Miss coming to the Plains and playing under the lights will not bode well for their attempts to put another W in the win / loss column.

The 2011 version of the Auburn Tigers is a team on the brink of greatness. This team loaded with true freshmen is a team of talent and great coaches. The thing they have been missing is experience. Watching the defense grow up and start to click this season has been both fun and painful to watch for Auburn fans. The thing that has been evident is their improvement. A wise man once said without mistakes you can never learn. If that is true, then learning opportunities were everywhere this past Saturday in Baton Rouge. The result of those mistake will be a better, more experienced and hungry defense this weekend on the Plains. You can expect Nosa Eguae, Eltoro Freeman and Lemonier to have breakout games this weekend . Demetruce McNeal and Bell will also be raring to show off as well.

You have doubts? Remember this: Playing LSU was a season changer for this young Defense. Going forward every offense they face will seem slower and weaker in comparison. If you can imagine the movie "The Matrix" when Neo has mastered his knowledge of the matrix and is able to slow down the action against his computer foes; apply a similar scenario to the Auburn defense. One of the toughest things to adjust to when moving up from high school ball to the SEC is the speed and power on both sides of the ball. You can consider LSU at the top of the food chain in both of these areas. Auburn will not face anyone like this again until the Iron Bowl. Every team between now and that annual slugfest should look out. This young defense has been to the mountain top. They have faced the giant. They will be better prepared for all future games and...they have a chip on their shoulder. Woe be unto the Ole Miss offense.

Most of the things I have mentioned so far also apply to the Auburn offense. You can look for Moseley to get better protection and have time to make some great passes down field for big plays. Dyer and McCaleb should both have 100+ yard games. The offensive line that looked like my grandma's spaghetti strainer last week will take that experience and the coaching they will receive this week and look 100% improved. Expect to see that line moving forward and creating all kinds of holes for Dyer to work his magic in.

If you don't have your tickets for the game this weekend you should make arrangements to get them now. The band should do some conditioning practice this week in preparation as well. Fans get ready to sing "War Eagle fly down the field..." loud and often. A blowout is brewing on the Plains this weekend and it should be fun to watch.

Wait, what?

You think O-mac AND Dyer will both have 100+ yard games? How can you talk about the vast improvement of the defense after getting torched last week? Did you watch the LSU game? Just because AU played LSU does not, by default, make us better… in fact, it looked like we went in the complete opposite direction. We have been man handled by the 3 best teams that we have played (Clemson, Arkansas, and LSU)… I guess I just don’t understand how that makes us better.

I really like your optimism. With that said, I have no idea how you can make some of those statements with a straight face haha. I do think we will beat Ole Miss. I just don’t think it’s going to be a blowout. This AU team just has so many glaring weaknesses… While there is definitely talent on the team, we’re a LONG way away from being a great team.

i believe that last year actually hurt this fanbase...

through all the conflict with Cam we lost the ability to point out the negative aspects of the team. Almost like, if you say anything bad about Auburn at all you are considered not to be “all in” or some how less of a fan..It deeply disturbs me.

We need to wake up people.

This is not unique to Auburn.

People who like to have even keel discussions about football don’t really have a place on message boards. You’re either a troll or a white knight. Message boards know no middle ground.

Honestly this site is one of the best that I’ve experienced in this regard (which is why I post a lot here)…

this may be true on some message boards ie.Al.com

but other rival sites (of which i won’t name) do an excellent job of breaking down stats and the intracacies of the game. The reason i went so long in not commenting here was cause of the “all in” mentality. Honestly I couldn’t stand that slogan last year but it seems to really have integrated itself into Auburn society. I just don’t see enough breakdown that so many blogs use.

Honestly, Im not a Chizik fan at all. I believe he won last year with an all world QB….I believe once Malzahn leaves the true Chizik will come out.

Not sure how long you've followed this site

But Acid Reign does about the best job anywhere “of breaking down stats and the intracacies of the game.” He then runs an open thread during the games and on Sundays he does an excellent game recap – again “breaking down stats and the intracacies of the game.”

Funny that ALL IN Perturbs ALL 4 AU

Curious name for someone annoyed by the ALL IN mentality.
Malzahn is the one who benefitted greatly by having Newton. Malzahns scheme and offensive philosophy does NOTHING to help our defense, and I’m sure that grates on Chizik to a degree. As you can see, with an average QB and O Line, Malzahn’s spread aint’ doing much. Wheres that spread sizzle? Where is all the defensive chaos its supposed to generate Bottom line is if you want to be at the top of the SEC, you better have Cam Newton or Tim Tebow running the spread if you want to beat the athletic and fast top tier SEC defenses.
Heres some homework for you, go look at the entirety of Malzahns career starting at Arky, he has made quite the reputation for himself running up the score on the Nevada’s and New Mexico’s of the world. When faced with good competition, he’s lost more than he won. In fact, even with Newton, it took him 4 games to figure out that Newton was a PROGRAM changing player. We almost lost to Miss St and Clemson before he figured out how to use him. While I don’t want to necessarily lose Malzahn, I think his departure will help us in the long run as we get back to the basics that win Championships, instead of gimmicks that make poor teams competitive.

Just a question...
We almost lost to Miss St and Clemson before he figured out how to use him.

What do you think is more likely?

1) It took Gus 4 games to figure out how to use Newton…
2) It took Newton 4 games to get comfortable in a new system

I would vote 2

Also,

instead of gimmicks that make poor teams competitive
To me, Malzahn’s offense is built on two things…Tempo and misdirection. And I wouldn’t call either of those “gimmicks”. But it’s starting to look like they aren’t solid foundations to build an offense on either. I’ll be honest, I was pretty jealous of Auburn’s offense in 2009. But last year it seemed to me that DC’s caught up, and that the only thing separating Auburn from everyone else was Newton/Fairly. And certainly this year there is nothing to be jealous of. Malzhan should have ridden off into the sunset after last year and taken his offers when he could get them. I’m wondering if his system isn’t fizzling.

It is fizzling

Although some of Malzahns plays seem really innovative, after you’ve seen them 10 times, they look a little less so. Malzahn is getting VERY predictable IMO and he RARELY has a quick answer for a defense that has him schemed well. Last week was a perfect example, LSU was being hyper aggressive on the line but he did nothing to check them like a quick hitting interior shovel pass. Time and again he went to that trap play with the very SSSSLLLLLOOOWWW Chad Slade getting to the edge about 2 seconds too late.
In essence, I’m not impressed. I never have been impressed with the Spread because when they run up against an elite defense??? SPLAT.

I must disagree with you about Cam. Malzahn CLEARLY had him on a leash last year and finally let him loose in the USC game. You don’t go from confused to dominant in one week…..and thats what happened. When Malzahn let Cam play the zone read and run, it was all over. Thats the kind of stuff you can’t PRACTICE, so Malzahn didn’t realize what he had, I guess.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

by Col.Angus on Oct 26, 2011 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe some other things to add.....

The fact that Malzahn has not had a starting QB two years in a row in his offense, and still produced big numbers.
That he never had as many true sophomores and younger to run his offense with. To me, this is the single biggest factor that plagues Auburn.
If and when he has a fourth class recruited, and running his offense, we will see the true effects or dysfunction of his offensive schemes. I only hope that it happens at Auburn.
If he doesn’t stay long enough to accomplish that at Auburn, we will see how good Chizik is at replacing assistants.

And another thing...

The 80plays per game….and the UP tempo. I have RARELY seen that put into play. It worked in the USC game, but then again we turned the ball over and didn’t really capitalize on it.
His version of up tempo seems to be to pound Dyer into the line which doesn’t gas the D like it would if he was going from sideline to sideline WHICH IS WHAT THE SPREAD IS SUPPOSED TO OPEN UP!!
SHEESH! It drives me nuts.

long time reader first time commenting...

But after reading this I just had to say something. Though I enjoy the positive points made here this “fluff” is getting a bit old. It’s one thing to say this team will/has improved but when will we start being honest about this team and coaches? When will analysis be voiced here breaking down why we lost? Bad plays, mistakes, incorrect play calls? There are schematical flaws that aren’t even being talked about. This goes beyond freshman mistakes, there seems to be cultural make up that lends itself to losing. How long can we rely on 4th quarter come backs to win?

At some point you move on from just being a supporter and being an “Auburn Man” and you start being honest about how far this team has fallen and just how far it will take to get back..

Bingo

This overly excessive optimism is starting to drive me crazy. I understand it’s difficult to accept since this past January we had just won the national title, but we’re not a good football team. In fact, in many ways we have digressed throughout the year.. the offense looks completely lost out there. Way worse than they were to start the season.

I believe in Auburn and love it.

stats

from another site, but you can find info like this here as well. I just pulled this one because I read it most recently. Granted it is prior to LSU which will change these #s, but on some level they still apply. We had probably the worst special teams performance of the season. Field position was junk, and LSU got 14 easy points off a pick 6 and a short field on a fumbled kickoff.

Team A
Rushing defense: 226 yards allowed per game (116th in the nation)
Total Defense: 477 yards allowed per game (116th in the nation)
Scoring Defense: 31 points allowed per game (93 in the nation)
First downs: 27.5 first downs allowed per game
Sacks: 0.75 per game (116th in the nation)
Team B:
Rushing defense: 123 yards allowed per game (42nd in the nation)
Total Defense: 307 yards allowed per game (19th in the nation)
Scoring Defense: 19 points allowed per game (18th in the nation)
First downs: 14.6 first downs allowed per game
Sacks: 2.66 per game (22nd in the nation)
Many of you reading this are thinking "Team A" must be Auburn because our defense has been pretty weak this season. But the answer is that both teams are Auburn in 2011. Team A is Auburn over the first four games. Team B is Auburn over the last three games. We broke it out that way because the defensive improvement Auburn has shown is real and it is significant. And the last three games have all been conference games.
One of the things about young football teams with good coaches is that they get better as the season goes along. And Auburn’s defense is clearly getting better. Players are learning from their mistakes, and coaches are learning what players can do in games and using them in the right situations. Success has bred some confidence, and the Auburn defenders now believe they will get off the field on third down, instead of allowing drives to continue. This defense will still have some rough patches down the road, but it should continue to improve and gel as the season goes along.

The offense has been anemic to say the least, but with a ton of injuries on the line and at receiver coupled with youth across the board, not to mention trying to follow up the most prolific offense in AU history what are you expecting. Me, I expected 8 or 9 wins this year which is still attainable. We can beat ole miss and it will be a dogfight. We should be samford and it will be a dogfight!. Who knows with UGA and Bama. It’s easy to say we’ll get drilled and probably so, but I refuse to call it a loss before we play the game. As far as relying on 4th quarter comebacks I can assure you that the coaches and players would prefer to avoid those. Think where we’d be if mosely or trotter or some of these young OL had been able to get some playing time in blowout wins last year rather than sitting on the bench watching another come from behind win. We’d be far ahead of where we are now in terms of game experience and possibly cohesive play, but it didn’t work out that way. The cultural makeup of the team I will defend to the death! There are fanbases and teams everywhere that would love to have our “it ain’t over til it’s over” attitude. In closing I’d say if you’re unhappy with the writing then you should either not read anymore of this gentleman’s posts, or write some of your own. Sorry you’re upset. You say that its “hard not to improve from $hit” which I agree with, but by the same token it is equally if not more difficult to upstage or even stand in the shadow of the best offense that has ever played at AU and should rank highly among greatest offenses of all time. Again the intangible never say die attitude and homerism plays into my saying that, but they were impressive. Imagine if they’d had any kind of 1st half defense to go with it. We lost alot of leadership. We aren’t good right now. I don’t apologize for being optimistic. I’ll tell it like it is. We don’t have leaders on this team now. Until some emerge we will continue to stink. We don’t have alot of experience on this team, but that diminishes by the week. Chizik has a call in show on thursdays if you really want to tell him how you feel.

Since this is only the 2nd article I’ve ever written here you have no idea what I normally write or say about Auburn. Preseason I predicted we’d be lucky to win 6 games. As the season progressed I have pointed out way more negatives than I care to remember. I have been a critic of Roof, Chizik several of the players and play calling. I’m pretty realistic most of the time. On some forums when people were touting the game Auburn was going to have against LSU I pleaded for them to be realistic. My prediction on the score was LSU 38 Auburn 12. So please feel free to discuss or attack this piece but don’t presume to know how I typically write or comment about this team. In fact this may be the most positive thing I have said about Auburn all year. Is it borderline on optimistic exuberance? Yes. Do I think this will be a great game for Auburn? Yes. I do. As far as me being an “Auburn Man”, well I am and I’m pretty proud about that. But this article has nothing to do with how far Auburn has fell from it’s championship or how far it has to go to be a contender again. It is about ONE game and one game only. Cheers and War Eagle!

really?
The 2011 version of the Auburn Tigers is a team on the brink of greatness

How so? By beating the bottom dwellers of the SEC? We have yet to beat a good team this year.

Watching the defense grow up and start to click this season has been both fun and painful to watch for Auburn fans. The thing that has been evident is their improvement.

And this is evident where? Our defense is putrid. When we have met a decent offense (Clemson, Arky and LSU) we got our shit kicked in. Akry barely got 200 yards against Bama…UF, USC and the rest of the bunch are plain terrible. So where has this defense improved? What did you see saturday that would lead you to believe this team has improved at all?

I’m sorry, but this post is nothing more than jacking off for Auburn fans..

i didn't say we wouldn't win or that it wouldn't be in a blow out.

But if you look at this season objectively you don’t see that much improvement. Sure there has been since the Utah St game but lets be serious, that was the worst football Auburn has played since 2008. It’s not hard to improve from shit.

We could win in a blow out and we could win a close one. My point is maybe the writers on this blog should take more effort into breaking down the games and usuing stats to prove their point instead of just fluff and obvious opinions.

anywhere here the horrible level of the 2008 team. These are freshmen and sophomores playing against juniors and seniors. You have to give them a break. Homer post is a homer post...

and this is as homer as it gets. Look, I’m as big an AU fan as you’ll find, but unless Cam Newton or Jason Campbell comes out on that field to play QB for us, we’re not scoring 42 points against anybody.

But I expect a win.

I hate to agree with what the others have said...

but I think its true. You need to step away from the rah-rah kool aide.

Not only is this team young. It is also beat up and bone weary. This team right now is still trying to get to a bowl game because that outcome is still uncertain.

We all love AU. But to think this team is going to blow out anyone when it hasn’t done it all season? That is just a bit silly.

But that is just an opinion.

Besides… I just want to improve and get to a decent bowl game. I think that is our best possible outcome at this point in the season. But if your right… I will surely give you the props.

See you at the game.

I like your optimism, but ...

I wish I could agree with a blow out prediction. With all the injuries and the way we been playing, the Tigers will be lucky to get a win.

by GreenvilleAUfan on Oct 25, 2011 2:06 PM CDT reply actions

Brink of Greatness?? Is it 2012 already??

I appreciate your optimism and I do thinkg that the LSU will help us grow as a team, although I think its a little early to expect that beating to pay dividends. 1st off the swelling will need to go down.

While I don’t think the beating was indicicative of how well we playing….at least into the second quarter…..its pretty evident that we aren’t beating anybody without playing a pretty wart free game. I’m going to need to see us do that and lay a respectable beat down on somebody before I start predicting one. For as much improvement as we have seen on the defensive side of the ball, we have seen the opposite on offense. Malzahn did a poor job of scheming for LSU and really hasn’t done much to take the heat off the running game for several games now. He seems to keep calling plays that we are incapable of running, such as having the very slow Chad Slade pull and be a lead blocker on the Jet Sweep or zone read plays. Problem is Chad is showing up just as the ball carrier is being dropped for a two yard loss…..oops. And with all the pressure LSU’s line was creating, where was the interior shovel pass to help stem their lust for Moeseley’s blood? Malzahn looked utterly bereft of ideas to keep LSU’s mauling Tigers at bay and poor Clint had to stumble and run for his life on every snap. Ole Miss will look slower to Clint but Ole Miss also now has a diagram on how to whip our offensive line. I’d say the odds are even there.

To whit, I must say that Ole Miss is gonna be hungry and HAS to beat us to have a decent chance at being bowl eligible. They are on a 9 game losing streak to the SEC and are due for a win. The good news is that we normally play much better in night games so we will have some intangibles in our favor there in terms of atmosphere and intensity. The bad news is Ole Miss DOES have some playmakers that can make our young secondary look very foolish if they don’t bring their “Primetime” game with them to Jordan Hare. Our strategy of field position, special teams play and ball control doesn’t really translate into a recipe for blowing out anybody much less another SEC team . So although I like us to win this week its more likely to be a low scoring affair unless Ole Miss gets careless with the football.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

by Col.Angus on Oct 25, 2011 4:16 PM CDT reply actions

"unless Ole Miss gets careless with the football"?

Shouldn’t that be “when Ole Miss gets careless”? I think you’re right to be cautious of a cornered Nutt, but Ole Miss is almost certain to cough up the football at some point. They’re also almost certain to score on a big play.

What I’m looking to see is whether Auburn can limit its own mistakes and play fundamental football: sustain drives, complete passes, play sound if not spectacular defense, and hold on to the football. If it can do those things, it will be well-positioned to take advantage of Ole Miss miscues and have some explosive plays of its own. If Auburn’s tackling problems resurface or if it has negative plays on offense, Ole Miss will be in range of winning this game. If Auburn can control the ball (or score a lot) and keep Ole Miss in front of ‘em on defense, Ole Miss won’t be in range.

Friendly suggestion or two for Brett...

I’ve done some writing for a fan site, and I told myself when I started that I would never jump into a comment thread related to my own work. You simply can’t win when you do that. If you want to interact with your readers (and I think you should), you might ask the publishers if you could post your email with your work. Everybody benefits that way. The grouches and rah-rah types can still post their thoughts in the thread; the drive-by constructive critics can do likewise; and those who truly care about getting a response from you will take the time to email you personally, giving you the opportunity to respond without the pressure of occupying center-stage.

Just a couple pence on writing for an audience such as this one: you might want to imagine readers’ responses as you’re working. If a comment pops into your head that you find unreasonable, dismiss it and stick with what you have. But if some hypothetical feedback leads to you to start second-guessing your work (or worse, to feel defensive), maybe that’s a part of the piece that you want to take another crack at.

But if you don’t like any of the above, at least know that you’re never going to please everybody. And if you do manage the impossible, it’s probably because your stuff wasn’t very interesting.

Best,
cto

I'll give Brett some props...

At the end of the 1st half though, did you really think you were going to eat those words? Just want to know.

Well you got it half right!!

You nailed the offensive production. The O Line played much better, giving Clint time and giving Dyer and OMac holes tor run through. We definitely imposed our will in the 2nd half.

The defense? Not so much. The Rebs ran all over us until our offense made them pass.

It was a blowout but not a domination. Thats ok though, we aren’t healthy enough to dominate anybody yet. I do think you are right that the LSU, provided a great Hard Knocks class that will benefit us in the coming weeks and the years ahead for our young team.
I’ll give you credit for throwing it out there and taking beating for it, so kudos to you…..now put your hat on straight.
