Saturday’s Win In Columbia Changes Everything For Auburn
Auburn's win at South Carolina won't be remembered as a classic. Few plays will show up on the season highlight reel. When you get right down to it, things were plain ugly most of the day. None of that matters.
What draws us to college football are the players - the people. For a team that had been largely forgotten by the college football world and questioned mightily by its fans, Saturday's win at Williams-Brice Stadium was a thing of beauty for the Auburn football team. There were enough storylines to make even the most jaded fan smile.
You have to start with running back Michael Dyer. Despite breaking Auburn's freshman rushing record last season and being named MVP of the BCS Championship Game, Dyer has played second fiddle to Carolina's Marcus Lattimore and Alabama's Trent Richardson all year.
His name was nowhere to be found among the preseason All-SEC teams. Heck, he didn't even start Auburn's opener against Utah State. Meanwhile, Lattimore has been the toast of the SEC - a Heisman winner in waiting.
For the third time in a little more than a year, Dyer left his talking for the playing field, besting Lattimore yet again. In playing through what Gene Chizik called, "horrendous pain," Dyer rushed for a career high 141 yards on 41 carries. When his days at Auburn are finished, he'll likely hold every school rushing record.
Can the college football world now acknowledge that Dyer is every bit as good or better than Lattimore and Richardson?
What about defensive coordinator Ted Roof?
Has there ever been a more maligned coordinator coming off a national title than Roof? Saturday's performance may have been his best since arriving at Auburn - and boy, that's saying a lot. His ridiculed bunch held Lattimore and Stephen Garcia to 2-of-10 on third down conversions. Talk about a turnaround.
There were rumblings all week from inside that Chizik had taken off his head coaching hat and worked almost exclusively on the defensive side of the ball. If so, here's to hoping he does it again this week.
There's obvious friction between Roof and Chizik; but it appears for now they've finally found a way to make it work. It likely will be the key to overachieving this season.
How big was the catch by backup receiver DeAngelo Benton? For a kid that arrived at Auburn with so much hope, his clutch catch on third-and-13 of the final drive was as big for him as it was for the team. With a receiving corp. that's thinning by the minute, Benton will only see his role expand heading to Fayetteville this weekend.
What do we make of quarterback Barrett Trotter? For those of you old enough to remember, he's starting to remind me of former Auburn quarterback Randy Campbell. Like Campbell, Trotter doesn't throw particularly well and he sure can't run, but he almost always finds a way to win.
Despite throwing an interception in the end zone late in the game, Trotter was seen on the sidelines afterwards calm and collected, acting as if he'd already forgotten what just happened. How many five-game starters can pull that off?
A few minutes later he would march Auburn down the field in the closing moments, hitting tight-end Phillip Lutzenkirchen for the winning touchdown - a feat he's now done three of his first five starts.
Things look a whole lot brighter for Auburn on this Monday than it did last week. They'll head to Arkansas as double-digit underdogs. They'll face one of the best passing attacks in America. But there is a ray of sunlight and hope on this first day of the week.
Back in August, if I had offered you a 4-1 record heading to Arkansas week, would you have taken it? Exactly. It hasn't been pretty so far, but it has been highly effective.
The biggest take away from the South Carolina win is that now this young team knows how to win on the road. And the best part is that they're young enough and naive enough to expect to win.
A little bit of swagger returned Saturday night. It's something that should serve Auburn well going forward. Suddenly a team that was hoping for a bowl bid is now playing for much more.
Don't you love college football in October?

When sitting in the stands on Saturday
I will admit that I, along with a number of other Tigers, found some displeasure in the manner in which Trotter played most of the game. That last drive, however, is probably his best to date. He had previously held the ball too long, wasn’t overly accurate with passes, certainly cannot run all that well, but he had the confidence and poise on the final drive that led to an Auburn victory over the 10th ranked Gamecocks. Thankfully, the Auburn faithful don’t have the reasons to be as dissatisfied with Trotter that the Gamecock fans have with Garcia. Obviously none of those with whom I spoke were pleased over the final seconds of the game but, overall, they were gracious in defeat.
Here’s hoping that Chizik and Roof can put together the offense and defense necessary against the Razorbacks. War Eagle!
Auburn Tigers -- YOUR 2010 Football National Champions!! DWWD!!
Great win for you guys.
I don’t think you’ll beat Arky, LSU or Bama…But UF and UGA seem well within reach. With win’s over Ole Misses and Samford that would put you guys at 8-4. Long way to go, but it seems doable with a little injury luck.
7-5 now seems a worst case scenario rather than a goal.

Baby steps
Baby steps walking out the door
Baby steps going to the stadium
Baby steps playing defense
Baby steps running the ball
Baby steps scoring.
Its all Baby steps at this point….no need to look ahead.

Zactly.....
just keep showing improvement each week and if that translates into wins and it should….then a win over Arkansas and/or LSU or Bama is feasible. Keep building on the successes and learning from the failures and this team has a bright future.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I dont think there is any doubt we can beat Arky
I’m certainly not expecting it but if we follow the same game plan as we did against the Gamecocks, we have a chance the pull off the upset. Run the ball, play keep away from Wilson and try to keep Arky on their side of the field.
Its no secret you can run on Arky, who will load the box to stop Dyer from carrying it another 40 times. That SHOULD open things up for Trotter in the passing game…depending on who is healthy enough to pass it to.
If we can win the Time of possession battle and get a push in the middle on defense to put some pressure on Wilson, I give us a good chance to win.
Easier said than done though, we won’t be able to turn the ball over like we did and expect to win. We will have to finish our drives with points on the board.

Great write up Jay
It was great to be at the game. The Defense was super but I had mixed feelings about Barret during the game but the last drive should really do a lot for his confidence as well as the whole team’s. War Damn Eagle !
It will all be about 3rd downs AGAIN!
No doubt that the Arkansas offense is far more potent than that of USCe. If the defense comes out and plays the way they did on Saturday, then it puts us in the position to win. Which puts our O on the hot seat. These guys have to limit turnovers and convert on 3rd down.
But, I’m still not entirely ready to look ahead…still enjoying the win on Saturday! War Eagle!

Can't say enough how proud I was of our entire team Saturday.
Like I said earlier this week, it was time for the Tigers to find their mean streak.
The defense stepped like it could have and should have and that made me very happy to see. I’m still not even close to being on the Roof-wagon but I can’t deny the defensive gameplan was right on against the Gamecocks.
I am very very frustrated with the Malzahn O the last 2 and a half games. Something seems off, but I’m not sure what it is. Saturday it seemed like we were getting either poor receiver play or USCe was really covering our WR’s well. I’m not good enough to know which it was.
Trotter is starting to really agitate me with his staring down the receivers. It is a huge tipoff to the opposing D and teams like Bama and LSU will eat him alive if he doesn’t improve that aspect of his game greatly.
I was very happy to see how well our o-line did against the USCe d-line. We had some stinky downs but all in all it was more than enough for Dyer to finally have a breakthrough game this year. Dyer really showed how important he can be to this offense going forward. He eats yards and clock and that is something this offense has lacked all year.
AND my game ball, helmet sticker, and free chicken dinner all go to the little engine that could T’Sharvan Bell he played Jeffrey like a wildman all night and AJ was beaten badly. His only TD catch was on a PUSHOFF! Oh my lord how did the officials miss that?! Regardless T Bell played one helluva game against one of the SEC’s top targets and shined!
War Eagle! Beat Arkansas!
War Eagle
Trotter not trusting himself...
The Malzahn O….especially the passing part….is supposed to be a quick read and release. Trotter is holding onto the ball too long and waiting for the primary receiver to get WIDE open, which is a mistake. For instance, on the play where Ingram is released by AJ Greene and isn’t picked up by the pulling guard (Sullen), Blake is running a crossing route into an open zone and Trotter waits until Ingram is on him to release the ball and he shortarms the throw and it falls incomplete. The longer he holds the ball the worse the play normally develops, and he ends up forcing his throws or taking a sack.
He has to be confident in his reads at the line of scrimmage and make the quick passes that keep the defense on their heels. He did that early in the year but he has become tentaive since the Clemson game. This has got to change if he is going to make progress as a QB

Exactly
The longer he holds the ball the worse the play normally develops, and he ends up forcing his throws or taking a sack.
At a certain point, he needs to have the courage to make a throw that his head is telling him is dangerous — it’s just the nature of a Malzahn offense, it seems.
I think he’ll do fine. At the very least, I think he’s learning that trying too hard to avoid the interception can be just as counter-productive as the interception itself.

I hear you and my buddy AUT and was in agreement with your assessment up until I read an article earlier today at AUfamily.com by stat tiger. Not sure if his facts are all correct but they do make sense.
Would like to hear what yuo guys think of his article.
Of course as we say in my office hold the paper still long enough and I can make the stats say anything you want them to say.

Spot on about Tbell! He has disappointed a bit this season, but oh my, was Saturday his day!
He looked ten feet tall all day and the push off was the only way AJ gets the catch. Loved, loved, loved his aggressive, magnetic coverage!
T Bells strength is definitely man coverage
He has shutdown skills.
His play around the line and tackling is another issue. He needs to work on his technique. Leaping arm tackles aren’t going to take down too many RB’s the next 6 weeks.
Of course at 170 + lbs I can’t say I expect Ronnie Lott.

Good read Jay.
As it has been stated all along by many on this site we are most likely going to have the ups and downs that are consistant with a young team throughout the entire year. Just remember to breathe deeply and by patient (myself included). Many times one half of the D on the field are freshmen and RS freshmen.
The game plan of play field position, run, run and run some more to eat up clock is the ideal game plan against Arky as long as the score stays close. If our nickle D can cover tight man we may see more blitzing than we have thus far.

Great win, guys
I was rooting hard for you guys on Saturday. Lutz’s fumble/fall/recovery was pretty darn impressive.
What would be even more impressive
would be if we could throw the ball to him more than once a game.

Even more than that
I was impressed with the strip he put on the SC DB on the interception return. I just hope that attitude is infectious. As much as skill-sets, leadership suffers on a team with so many young kids and so few uppcerclassmen.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Excellent point.
Lutzie had a great game! I might be wrong, but I think he tackled twice to stop an interception return. He had great awareness the whole game!

I don't know what orifice we keep pulling these wins out of.
but I hope we have a few more hidden away in there.

When we move to the SEC East, What would do you think our ideal schedule would be first year in a 14 team SEC? Obviously we’d have to play all teams in the east, and at least 3 in the west. I’d personally love to see us have 4 cross divisional games and only 2 OOC games. Who needs Utah State? or FAU? give me A&M or Mizzou instead.
The last touchdown drive
Didn’t quite qualify for “The Drive” status but impressive nonetheless.
I was sitting in a sports bar in Destin watching the game with 5 UGA fans and one GT fan and that was kind of funny. Despite all the typical “Cam got paid” and “Fairley was dirty” crap I caught, it was fun to beat a team that UGA had lost to and in the process shut down Lattimore for the most part.
Still a long way to go but our picture is rosier than it was for sure.
WDE.

PS. Would have loved to have heard what Chiz said when it got in Roofs face late in the game. I like that guy more and more-sort of a Mark Richt with gonads.
Hey mods. Anyone know what's going on with SB nation lately?
I’m only able to get the first 2 articles on the main page of every site and none of the fan posts or fan shots. It’s been like this since Friday.

I believe Jay is working on it.

But it’s working for me today. SB is working on it I think.
Now accepting applications for SEC membership.

Enjoyed both reads today Jay.
I hope we can feel just as good at the end of next Saturday. While I know 2 out of the next 3 are SEC West contest, I want to win the Florida game the most.

You are absolutely right... today, the sun is shining just a tad brighter on the prettiest village on the Plains.
In my opinion, we experienced a break through on defense. I come to that conclusion because this same USC team beat UGA in Sanford Stadium in Athens. I guess speculation could be that USC didn’t play well… but I would again assert that AU had something to do with it.
Our D-line hurried Garcia all day long. I think we got at least 3 sacks that I remember. And we picked him off twice. But not only that, they coralled Lattimore for only 66 yards. That is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered.
Our offense wasn’t very impressive… but it did the job. We did take some risks because we were on the road. They didn’t pay off in points though. And I thought the pick thrown by Trotter in the endzone was because he was running for his life. The young man holds the ball too long while staring down his receiver. This is an ability that some have while others don’t. It’s nothing to be ashamed of… and let’s give the devil his due… these cocks on defense were pretty good. Wow… I can’t believe I used that in a sentence.
A lot has been made of the second. Speaking for me… I am not sure what a second would do for USC that 59 minutes and 59 seconds had already proven. But I did watch Spurriers sports show… God love him the man is just as honest as the day is long. He was very critical of his own folks… and he never once made a coloring book joke about AU.
My players of the game: Lutzenkirchen (Mr. Football) and Mike Dyer (Never quit). The attitudes demonstrated by these young men are what Auburn is all about!
I think Chizik came away a winner this weekend. But the real winner was Roof. He was vindicated. Because unlike last year… AU dominated from the beginning of the game to the end. If there was a loser… I would say it was Gus. Some of the “prestige” kind of wore off… I almost got put out by him not bringing in Frasier to stay when Trotter was running for his life… but again, to his credit, he knew what Trotter could do. And what’s more… Trotter did it.
On to this weekend:
I cringe about playing ARK this weekend. I was there at the game last year… they are tough no matter if they are 1-11 or 12-0. They just match up well against AU.
The QB is great. He actually relieved Mallet in last years game. I thought he was better than him.
My take on the strategy in this game is:
Defense: No change. We cannot allow Tyler to sit in the pocket and throw all day. We must attack. And our DBs they got to cover… all the time.
Offense: No change. But we have to score and hold the ball. Not necessarily in that order.
