We'll Take It! Were the Gamecocks A Win We Weren't Supposed to Have?

Gene_and_steve_medium

Spurrier asks Gene if he's seen the the shirtless pic of him from earlier this year.

Saturday was an interesting day for me. All along I knew I had a wedding to go to--yes, who in their right mind gets married during CFB season and expects any guests--but I never thought I'd miss any of the game. With a 1pm kickoff  wedding march, I thought for sure the logistics would work themselves out as CBS would take Bama-Florida for the 3:30 game and leave us for the later telecast by ESPN. Little did I know that CBS was doubling down and took both games, and the more attractive match up got held over for prime time. I guess none of the network heads had seen the way either team had played in the previous two weeks or we would have had the noon game.

With the ceremony and reception, it took us right up to kickoff, so naturally I found a TV and commandeered it, only to be followed by about ten other men looking for someone with natural leadership abilities like me and a good excuse to get out of doing the chicken dance (pun intended).Coincidentally, there were a few Auburn and Clemson alums there, so we had two groups to cheer us on. Did I mention they didn't have booze at the wedding? This was another contingency I had planned for, but with a dozen new friends, the fifth of Bourbon didn't last long. We caught the first quarter until the women shooed us away to go see off the bride and groom. I then went back to the hotel with my friends who were in from out of town, we changed, then hit a bar for the second half. I was happy because I got to yell at the TV in front of a bunch of friends and strangers and because it takes as little as something like that to actually make me happy.

We had talked a few weeks ago a game or two in about how the season would play out for us and I believe Jay mentioned that there might be one or two games we would win that we weren't supposed to, and maybe lose one or two the other way. Was the South Carolina victory one of those, or was something else at play here? It's hard to tell, On one hand, you have the #10 Gamecocks, but if you'd seen them against Navy and Vanderbilt, you'd know that something was amiss and they probably weren't deserving of such a lofty ranking. Everyone saw the SC-Georgia contest and became believers in the poultry, but they didn't catch the last two. If you only looked at Marcus Lattimore's stats you'd think they were a contender for the divisional title again based solely on that although there were definitely problems with Stephen Garcia and Alshon Jeffrey that a look beyond a casual glance could detect. Now the east race is wide open once more for the taking.

Don't get me wrong, that we were some juggernaught rolling in. We were 10-point dogs, but many people were taking Auburn and the points. That at least means you've got a chance for the upset. We knew from last year's tandem of games that we matched up well against them--especially on Lattimore, and we also knew that Gus Malzahn was absolutely not tipping his hand last week, so maybe we were bringing it. As it turns out, Gus did bring it--in the number of plays that we ran, if not points on the board. With our defense, us just controlling the time of possession is a game-changer. That we ran 80% more plays than SC is truly stunning.

Barrett Trottergot the win, but you can't say it was always pretty. My first thought was that he didn't look good at all, but after re-watching the game late Saturday night, I decided that it wasn't as bad as I thought. Although he was running for his life most of the day from Jadeveon Clowney and Melvin Ingram, it wasn't because the pass protection was that poor. There was hesitation there to throw it, and I'm not sure if it was because the receivers weren't getting open in time or that Trotter lacked confidence.

Yes, some of his throws were wounded ducks nowhere near the guy. Barrett can't throw on the run like we're used to Cam doing either. The two picks couldn't help his confidence at all, and you never know, maybe he's thinking in the back of his mind all the time about all the snaps that Kiehl Frazier gets now. Frazier poses a legitimate run threat and Malzahn seems committed to him doing two things: 1) running like a gazelle and 2) absolutely not passing the ball until the LSU and Alabama games, hoping that the defenses will sell out. Not likely for those two, but I like the chess match being played many moves ahead. Trotter showed that he could run--on plays clearly designed for him to do just that. Running for your life: not so good. Tucking it up the middle on a QB draw: highly effective in limited doses.

But nobody gets the game ball more so than our defense deserves. Never has a more maligned group tuned up their game so quick against such a big opponent.  Keep that up and we might see Roof for Prez signs out. Clearly his bunch does their best work when they're not out on the field for thirty-six plus a game, which is what we've averaging so far. We held SC to under 300 yards and most importantly, under 25 minutes of possession. We're going to need that same effort this week against Arkansas to keep their high-powered offense on the sidelines, and unless Roof and company pull the same Herculean feat, the only way that is going to happen is if the Hogs keep throwing TD bombs. And under Bobby Petrino, that's exactly what I'd expect them to try to do.

So did we steal one in Columbia? I'll let you decide. My mind won't be made up until the end of the year. Maybe we got lucky or maybe this team just found their groove. October is deadly this year. As an American patriot once said, "these are the times that try men's souls."And teams', too.

At the beginning of the season I thought we would win the first five, no question. But after the poor tackling at Clemson, and then the weak showing against Florida Atlantic, I was less sure. But our guys improved, and the Ole Ball Coach ain’t what he used to be. His time management and play calling at the end were unfortunate. We stopped Lattimore, again. And the world better know! (Since we stopped him, we have a better than fair chance of stopping Bama’s running game. So “Calm the f#*k DOWN.”)

Now, I think we have a better than even chance against Arkansas. I am not happy about losing Blake. But Arky is also banged up and might be playing us without their starting defensive ends. Although that didn’t help aTm, Malzahn/Roof have a more flexible gameplan than the Aggies’ staff.

Florida is also running hot and cold, so we have a better than even chance against them as well.

LSU will be a challenge, no doubt.

Nutt is the gift that keeps on giving.

Georgia, weaker than Florida, is another attractive opportunity for success.

Thank you, Samford with-the-sprinkles-on-top. We needed that.

And the Iron Bowl is always a chance for victory. (see above)

As long as our team continues to learn and evolve, we have a chance to achieve 10 wins. And wouldn’t that be special.

Is Georgia weaker than Florida?

Especially now that Brantley is out for one or more weeks? Hopefully he’ll stay out through our game on the 15th just for good measure.

Raise your hand if you thought State would beat GA in Athens. I did. I didn’t get to see that game but maybe State has lost their desire to win.

State is playing with 2nd and 3rd string linemen on offense

What we started, LSU finished off. MSU’s line is decimated and can’t run the ball now.

If we played State right now, we would roll. As we all know, when you can’t run the ball and your defense is on the field all day, you end up looking pretty bad. Much like the folks who are poo-pooing our effort in Columbia, I put very little weight in UGA’s win right now. If they can follow that up with a win against Tenn on the road, I’ll be impressed.

Injuries are most of the story.

But I think State has lost their will to play. They were largely uncompetitive in the LSU game and they lost to an Auburn team that they expected to beat.

I think they got a reality check and didn’t like what they found out.

A Saturday wedding in the fall

is the very definition of “taking one for the team.”

Good write-up. I think you’re right about still not knowing if this was a “stolen” win or not. At this point, I’d need to see more SC as well as more Auburn to make that judgement for certain.

This is what happens when you execute your plan.....and get some help from a Schitzophrenic

Saturdays game unfolded the way you draw it up on the board. Win the field position battle, run, stop the run, control the TOP. Check, check, check and check. Do I think we stole one? After the prior 4 games, hell yes I think we stole one. Going into this year I felt we would be VERY fortunate to win this one, so this is a +1 in my book and makes up for the Clemson game that I expected us to win.

While the defense played much better they were aided by the Jekyll and Hyde of the lower piedmont, making very poor and ill advised throws allowing us to have great field position all day. Why I feel like we stole this one is that we did not capitalize on the turnovers and the great field position we enjoyed. Normally you lose games like that, especially on the road. We should have won this game going away but we had to hang on for dear life at the end.

What is most important is that our kids will gain confindence from the win and hopefully build on it. I wouldn’t count SC out though. They still have dangerous weapons and could easily right the ship. They got their wake up call and have winnable games the rest of the way out if they can get Garcia on the right medication.

Place, I say, place your bets! Money plays, loser stays! Everyone's a winn - well, not everyone.

no... we didn't steal this one. I was at the game and while the field was littered with flags and INTs...

Auburn deserved to win this game. Stats show it, the fell of the game showed it… and in the end… the score showed it.

we don’t steal games when our D holds a heisman contender to 66 yds rushing.

you do it and you wipe it up.

by buddy Ro on Oct 4, 2011 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

No argument there....

I just feel lucky we emerged with a victory when we missed a PAT, which almost always precedes a loss. Add that to the fact we turned the ball over 4 times on their side of the field, I’ll just say you don’t win often when you do that.

Fortunately the D played great and Garcia tried to expel a hairball all game.

This team is growing up... right in front of us!

We saw this in large portions this weekend. The adventure will continue as we go through October. Confidence is one hell of a weapon to be drawing upon as we move into the tougher part of our schedule. Two weeks ago… I was worried. Now, I think we are slightly better than 50-50. And frankly – that is all that you can ask of kids.

Listening to PF yesterday (and I know the high brows on here don’t) he said that Nutt was in B’ham on Monday and speaking to some club there. During his speach he complained about Gene Chizik and that he stole one of his players from him at the last minute (Germaine Whitehead). Did any one else listen to this drivel? It’s actually quite funny. And it goes to show you how far AU has come. The indignation of Nutt is really pathetic considering that he has been around the conference for better than 10 years. Ole Miss needs to fire this guy now.

I love the pontifications here. So to add my own, I think AU’s defensive strategy needs to be the same. But we need to improve. Attack, attack, attack! Tyler isn’t Garcia by any stretch of the imagination. He is ACCURATE. To effect that accuracy we have to put that guy on his back every chance we get. On offense we must control clock by running the ball. Not to mention score, score, score! I suspect this game to be like last years game… a game of endurance.

Nutts a nut.

He may be at Ole Miss but he’s squealing like he’s still at Arky. What a hypocrite. If he could get a 4 star recruit away from Auburn the weekend before national signing day, you know he would do it in a second. To say Chizik stole him is just laughable. Whitehead went where he had the best opportunity and would play for a team with a chance to play for championships while he was there.
Of course Nutt played to the Bama press corp by saying that Whitehead told Nutt that he chose Auburn because “It was just business”, of course lighting the fire to the Bama faithful in attendance who still think that Cam actually is on tape somewhere saying “the money was too much”, implying once again that Auburn backed up the only Brinks truck in the SEC for another recruit. Just shameful.
Nutt has no integrity at all, and is obviously willing to say anything to deflect attention away from his inability to compete in the SEC. Of course he is already trying to line up the excuses for why he is being paid very handsomely to come in dead last in the west yet again, so I guess we can’t expect too much of him.

BTW: I love the picture above...

And I have nothing but respect for Steve Spurrier. I think the fact that he left a winning program (UF) and came back to one that was on decline (USC) and helped stabilize it – making it a force in the SEC East – speaks volumes of his character. The dude is a fighter.

He is witty. Not to mention that he is an offensive minded genius that was WAY before his time. Whether he realize it or not… he is connected to Auburn for life by his actions in the past. It’s only fitting that he is connected now in the way he is.

The circle is now complete.

All things considered, I’ve always liked Spurrier, too. He’s been good for the sport. His ego was whittled down to size after the NFL stint, making him a little more bearable.

If I ever meet him, I hope I’m carrying a coloring book for him to sign.

If we beat Arky, we steal one.

Not to say that can’t, but I’m nervous about being able to outscore Petrino’s offense. If the D has the game that they did in Columbia, then yes, we will steal the shit out of this game. Stupid me invited colleagues over for dinner this Sat night, so I will have to dvr it and watch it on a delay. I’m so bummed! Would it be weird if I invited them over for dinner at 4:00?? :)

I don't think we stole it.

I think we matched up well against USCe, were better coached and caught a few breaks. That usually translates to W’s.

I didn’t expect a 16-13 defensive battle. I was thinking more along the lines of 35-31 or something close to that. It’s nice to see our young guys on defense grow up a bit and know that we don’t always have to score 40 to win the game.

Re: Trotter

If you’re going for style comparisons, don’t look much farther back than Brandon Cox for the QB that Trotter most resembles. The only obvious difference I can see is Barrett’s improved throwing strength. Like Brandon, Barrett has poor mobility, little to no acceleration and sometimes holds onto the ball too long. But Barrett’s arm is better and more accurate, or I’m no judge.

But the key to his ability is not his physical gifts (less than Cam, but how many could do even 70% as well as Cam did?), or his very tangible ability to run Malzahn’s offense well. It is something else.

I feel the key to his performance is the intangible gift of unflappability that Brandon Cox occasionally lacked and that Cam had by the bucketful. I have yet to see Barrett have a string of bad throws like Brandon did ever so often. He has settled down after each mistake, and not committed the same error again and again. There is a calmness of demeanor and workman-like dedication to the next task at hand that is the key to a good leader.

I liked Brandon Cox a lot. His courage and tenacity was there for everyone to see. I see much the same in Barrett and hope he continues to perform at the level he has shown so far. While he might not break Cam’s records anytime soon, I think he’s doing more than his part for the success of the team.

Cox came to my mind as well....

For all the reasons you mention….although I do think Trotter is a decent runner, he just has poor acceleration.

Where I think Trotter is most similar is how he does better when he let the game come to him and he reacts instead of thinks. I think Trotter lets his eyes overide his instincts and he ends up pressing to make plays. When he reacts in the flow of the game his throws are much more accurate and less forced. Contrary to most QB’s I think he excels best under pressure….except of course when he is rolling to his left (???!!) I still don’t know why he EVER does that. Nothing good happens when he rolls left, the best you can hope for is a chuck out of bounds in the direction of a covered receiver. Oh well….he’s gotta learn right?

good stuff folks!...

winning time of possession this weekend against Arky should be a goal, but it won’t have the specific impact that it had against SC. Arky can move the ball through the air too efficiently… we could out possess and still get killed.

strange how i have flipped and flopped trying to figure out where this AU D’s strengths are… i still haven’t figured it out. what is promising is that there have been moments for each of the areas… secondary, LBs, & line. they have had their moments for sure… good and bad. here’s to hoping it can come together in the next couple weeks.

games like Auburn / Arky seem pretty simple to break down on the surface, but … not – so – fast. i think the worse thing we could do all week is focus too much on rushing the passer and mixing coverages… and lose that primary eye on the ball and stopping the run.

winning in the SEC always starts with stopping the run. AU’s stout start in Columbia (stopping Lattimore) had a significant impact on their play calling the rest of the game.

as many on TET folk expected, Frazier’s role has enjoyed steady expansion… the 2011 limit for Frazier is still a HUGE unknown… but somehow, it feels more and more like this team is going to go only as far as he progresses. Trotter has made some big plays early in the season, but it just feels like there is more of a dedication on the coach’s part to broaden the O … through Frazier.

you do it and you wipe it up.

Stolen win or not

It’s our win and I’ll take it! Don’t know why but I keep having a good feeling about the Arky game. Had the same about the SC game. Wishful thinking? Don’t know but it worked out last weekend so we’ll see.

Trotter...

Must accept Frazier becoming more a part of the offense. It’s not going to change anything. I said this before and I’ll say it again, he needs to quit worrying about that and play to the best of his ability. Frazier is Auburn’s future even if Trotter plays out the rest of his career at Auburn Frazier will still be there for two more years. I do not think Frazier is in a competition with him anymore. Malzhan is just getting him more acquainted with College and SEC football in general. You will see Frazier more again against Arkansas. I’m going ahead and calling Frazier’s first completed pass Saturday. I think it’s going to happen. I really think this is the one Gus has been waiting on to let him throw. Frazier will have more room to do things if he’s been throwing some before LSU and later Alabama. It gives UA and LSU more to think about and Frazier more options to play with while he’s out there. I wouldn’t mind seeing some triple threat option sweeps with Frazier, McCaleb, and Dyer to the same side of the field. The defenders really wouldn’t know exactly where the ball was going. Plus, he could always air it out to Blake or Benton.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

I would agree....

But I think it’s entirely dependent upon whether this game is close and competitive. If it is, I think we see it, as Malzahn wouldn’t have any reason to avoid tipping our hand in an in-division match-up.

If it’s out of reach quickly — in the wrong direction — I think you’re right, and he holds off another week, at least.
