The Journey of Kiehl Frazier
Auburn reserve quarterback Kiehl Frazier (Fr. QB) has heard the stories about the intensity of the Iron Bowl. He understands that for a season to be truly successful, Auburn must prevail when the schedule hits Amen's Corner. That being said, forgive the freshman if he puts Saturday's game at Arkansas on equal footing with Auburn's two biggest rivals.
Saturday night is as big as it gets for the Springdale, Arkansas native. The kid who grew up running around the house with a red Razorback hat on during fall Saturday's is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. He'll suit up and play at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium for the first time when Auburn calls on tenth-ranked Arkansas at 6 p.m. CT (ESPN).
Taking an approach similar to what Florida's Tim Tebow followed during his freshman campaign, Frazier is seeing his role expand gradually each week - primarily in the Wildcat formation. One thing has already been established - the kid has wheels.
Frazier has carried the ball 13 times for 81 yards. His biggest carry came late in the fourth quarter last week at South Carolina where he converted a 3-and-2 to keep Auburn's winning drive alive.
"You'd expect a little bit of jittery, but he was calm and collected," said offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. "Fourth quarter, third-down-2, and you'd have thought we were out there practicing."
While Frazier may have moved up a level in competition, tucking and running still comes as second nature. During his final three seasons at Shiloh Christian (Ark.) he rushed for nearly 3,000 yards and 51 touchdowns. Despite only 13 carries this season, he's already starting to draw comparisons to - wait for it - Cam Newton.
It's a comparison that both Malzahn and Auburn coach Gene Chizik refuses to discuss. Both insist Frazier remains the number three quarterback behind Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley.
Ask point blank this week whether Frazier would be Auburn's go-to person should Trotter go down with injury, Chizik was quick to put on the brakes.
"I don't think that he's there," Chizik said. "We're going to give him the things to do that we feel like he can succeed at. We won't give him any more than that. We won't expand it beyond anything we think it's going to give him anything less than a chance to be successful. We're not going to do it."
Known as a dual-threat quarterback, fans have yet to see the other half of his arsenal. Frazier has dropped back to pass only twice, one resulting in an incompletion and the other a sack. Malzahn says the passing attempts will come.
"He can throw it," Malzahn said. "And we'll definitely let him do that."
Chizik says he's not worried about Frazier's throwing ability. He sees it every day in practice. What's most important to Chizik is building the freshman's confidence.
"I talked to him (last) week and made it very clear that when you get in the game, you just need to be you," Chizik said. "If we ask you to throw the ball, that's why you threw for 10,000 yards in high school. Throw the ball and be Kiehl Frazier.
"If we ask you to the run the ball, be confident, get as many yards as you can get and protect the football. Don't be tight. Just relax and go out there and play.
"I think he's becoming more confident as the games go on. With that, we'll do whatever we feel like he can do in terms of expanding his role."
As for Frazier, he knows it takes time to earn the trust of Auburn coaches.
"Coach Malzahn and coach Chizik have to be comfortable with me going out there and they have to believe in me being able to complete the pass," Frazier said. "I think that's coming pretty soon. Hopefully, they'll have the confidence in me to throw the ball."
His chance may come at home Saturday night.

I would love to see some passing from Kiehl in the upcoming games.
2 plays that I think would really work would be:
Faking the zone read and hitting Lutz up the seam deep.
Running a screen pass to Dyer thrown by Frazier. Frazier doesn’t throw and Dyer rarely catches.
Either play could easily go for a TD from anywhere on the field.
Better yet...
….make it a rollout, throw-back to Dyer. Maybe with one of those “falldown” fakes by Dyer faking a cut block.
......Drowning in cool elixir.
Am I being too pessimistic?
I’m really, really hoping Kiehl starts to figure the offense out soon because the offense looks terrible right now. Trotter looks like a deer in the headlights out there… He has zero field awareness, he stares down every throw, and holds on to the ball WAY too long… he just has no confidence. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before defenses start catching on more so than they already have. If Garcia hadn’t been so incomprehensibly bad, we would have gotten crushed last week.
If we’re going to run the ball 45-50 times a game, why not play a QB who is a threat to run? All Trotter was doing all game was handing the ball off and throwing for incompletions/INT’s on 3rd down. Can Frazier not do that?
For the record, I’m really not trying to bash Trotter – I love the guy. I’m just wondering if he is really our best chance to win… Let me know what y’all think.
WAR DAMN! Love me some pork.
I believe in Auburn and love it.
Just about any QB is going to look bad.....
after watching Cam last season.
Trotter has been on campus for a few seasons but he is still a first year starter. I imagine that last drive at SC did a lot for both his confidence and his teammates confidence in him. That could be a huge turning point for him personally this season.
Kiehl is not ready to run the offense yet, so let’s give Trotter a legit shot here at doing what he can and growing this season just like the rest of the team. Even if he is just handing the ball off, he is a much bigger threat to throw the ball right now than Frazier is and the defenses know it. This is probably the biggest reason he gives us the best chance to win right now, imo.
AND
I would also argue that Trotter wouldn’t look so bad if the O-line was a titch more sturdy. I think that we can all agree that he looks better than Chris Todd did. Poor Chris Todd.
Kiehl is going to be great, one day. Based on some stuff that I’ve seen him say on twitter (when he probably shouldn’t have), he’s still overwhelmed. The coaches are good at these types of decisions. They will know when he’s ready.

I believe Trotter can be a good QB...
So far he doesn’t look nearly as unable to run as Chris Todd did in 2009. The game speed is going to come to him soon. If the “O” line can give him a legit three and a half seconds most snaps, he’ll improve his numbers and the teams ability to win.
This just might be the game where Trotter gets that, and if he can complete some early, he’ll catch fire. That’s my hope anyway.

I had to snicker
So far he doesn’t look nearly as unable to run as Chris Todd did in 2009.
Chris Todd was a good guy, running the offense that he had with the skills that he had. With that said, I’ve seen patio furniture that is more able to run than Chris Todd.
Agreed, in that Trotter looks mobile when he needs to be. I think he could be better, but usually when he’s running, it’s because his life is on the line from someone like Clowney, and he’s still thinking of dumping it off or looking for a read.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
While Trotter made some bad decisions and does have a "habit" of staring down his recievers....
I don’t think he lacks confidence and I don’t see that deer in the headlights look in him. His habit of staring down his recievers is fixable and he doesn’t always do it and when the OL starts doing a better job of protecting him I think he will be fine…..the last thing we need is a QB controversy…….the last blue chip QB thrown to the wolves in his freshman year ended up as a WR (although a much loved one).
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
While I too am curious to see him throw some
I really want to see him run the zone read 10+ times per game.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
Frazier...
is the future of Auburn. His senior year will be the one that falls on Auburn at a good time. Trotter has to accept Frazier will be a bigger and bigger part of the offense each game. That doesn’t mean Kiehl is going to be played instead of Barrett. He’s just got to get out there and compete. Frazier will be incredible and you see glimpses of brilliance with him. He’s going to be outstanding we just need to pack some muscle on him and our O-Line has to block better.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
What yall said... and
I also think it says a lot what our coaches have done preparing (and protecting) Mike Dyer. It tells me that when they know the talent is there, they don’t even bother with a redshirt. They put Dyer in games but did not allow him to shoulder too much of the load of the offense last year. Same thing with Frazier this year. Maybe since Frazier is headed back to his home state, we will see more of him this week than in weeks past. I think he’s ready to take another step, but our coaches are smart. They aren’t going to put him in a threatening situation this year.
Last week gave me a little more hope in this year’s team, but by no means do I believe we will not stumble as we go up against some even tougher opponents. I think the coaches are doing the right thing developing the talent. We are going to be hell on wheels for the next couple years if they keep the ship right. And I expect we will create some serious problems for opponents this year, continuing tomorrow in Fayetteville. WAR EAGLE!
