Friday Ramblings - God Help The Children

“I’ve got my hands full trying to score points against Georgia and that’s my only focus" -Gus Malzahn

Round and round we go...

Is it me? Does it seem to you that the coaching carousel starts earlier every year?  Auburn's Offensive Coordinator has already had his name thrown into the mix, as Jay mentioned, and we still have three games left this season, plus a Bowl game to get ready for.

In all honesty, we know we are not going to have Gus with us for all eternity. He is going to leave Auburn at some point, I just want to see him go where he has a good chance to play against Auburn, in a Bowl game. Definitely not in the regular season.

Trovon Reed...

Maybe I missed that game, or need to get a checkup. Did anyone see where Trovon Reed has made any real impact on Auburn's offensive performance this season? "Cause I sure haven't noticed it. Maybe one of you would be kind enough to explain to me the media's thoughts on just how his return gives Auburn a boost.

Or, is that a secret weapon waiting to be pulled out of the box, against UGA and Bama? Here is to hoping Trovon proves me inattentive.

Comment of the week...

It's actually a part of his comment. The words were never more true.

And, the winner is....

WDE 1988

You have to choose sides at birth. And in some cases… it’s decided earlier than that… it’s pre-ordained.

I think we should all take a step away from this and celebrate who we are.

I am not, nor will I ever be ashamed of my State or my heritage. It’s part of who I am… and for an outsider who thinks this film encapsulates the essence of Alabama or it’s interstate Civil War… my advice would be to walk a mile in my shoes before you smugly think you understand. And maybe in 4-5 years… you too might truly understand what the rest of us refer to as the Iron Bowl.

In his comments about the ESPN show titled R*** T***/WAR EAGLE

Society, the natural order of things...

It has been said, that in every society there is a structure. Whether it's an aboriginal tribe, or our great country, structure exists. There are leaders, and organizers. There are the teachers. Then, there are those more capable than others, whose sole purpose is to keep our society in a comfortable state of existence. They are the fighters. Soldiers if you will.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Takeo Spikes is a fighter! I am proud he is on our side.

GOD help the children...

Here is my take on the Penn State situation as I know it right now.

There are an awful lot of good Penn State alumni that are hurting. There are a lot of parents questioning whether or not to let their kids go to school there.

There are more fingers being pointed at Sandusky than anyone imagined. Now we are asking "How many victims will come forward", instead of "How could this happen?".

There are many thousands of people that don't watch college football asking "If the business of college football meant more than the welfare of those kids?"

I do know this. If my son were a victim of that sick ^#@%&*%. I'd make him a Spike80DF cocktail, and watch him suffer.

Auburn vs. Georgia...

As Aubtigerman noted earlier this week, it's time for the "Oldest Rivalry in the South".

Georgia welcomes our Tigers with anticipation, and an excitement, not felt in several years to the Bulldog faithful. UGA has enjoyed a comfortable scoring average over their opponents, allowing only 19.9 per game, all the while averaging nearly 35 themselves.

While "special teams" is not an entirely accurate way to describe the Dawgs kicking game units, their defense has been especially good at keeping teams out of the red zone. However, if Auburn gets into the red zone, they will have to take full advantage of the trip.

A Field Goal may well win this game, but it aint the only way points will be scored. This promises to be a close hard fought game with the winner coming out looking at an opportunity for better Bowl Game positioning.

My heart wants to pick Auburn, but reasoning leaves too much doubt as to that outcome. Because I just can't bring myself to go against my Tigers...

Most Important Position Battle

We can win this game. Yeah, Georgia has the biggest line in all of football. But we have Lutzenkirchen and McCalebb who exploit the outside. Once again, we have to master the edges to escape the mass in the middle.

If we get Blake’s hands in the mix, so much the better. The task will be blocking the pass rush. And that will be a tall task. A task for real men. And we have a few. Very few. Well, one. Lutzenkirchen. Lutzie is the key to this game. Pray for him.

I'm excited and as always anxious over another battle with UGA

My main concern is those guys are playing with confidence and swagger at this point in the season and they have all their weapons healthy.

I enjoyed the read this morning on Veteran’s Day as I get ready to make the trek to the dog pound, I want to stop and say …

God Bless our Vets and God bless our men in uniform, especially those that are in harms way.

My goodness what a week!

I’ve been lurking for most of the week (I had energy to roll my eyes at AU Tiger a couple of times…for the record.)….

1) Takeo Spikes is one bada** mofo. Seriously. Thank you R***T***/War Eagle for reminding me of this. Any documentary that gives a wingnut like Updyke so much airtime, can not be legit. The fringe culture should never get that much airtime. On the other hand, who knew that Finebaum was such a great actor. If he can act like a reasonable moderator on tv, why can’t he do it on the radio? Oh, right….wouldn’t be good for ratings. meh.

2). Auburn/Georgia week used to be my favorite week of the whole football season. The week that I felt the most homesick. I miss the good ole ribbing. Now it’s all fisticuffs. I don’t think this happened over the last year. I first noticed it in 1998, Georgia beat Auburn, I was aggressively ribbed by Dawgs-but I played the good sport, congratulated them on the win and told them ‘see ya next year’. Felt it again in 2002, when Auburn was drubbing Georgia. I did leave. I said nothing, didn’t cheer, barely smiled, and one Dawg threatened to punch all 5’1" of me in the face. For what? Wearing orange? A person I went to grad school with is a Georgia Alum. We used to swap texts this week. 2 years ago this stopped. For me the ‘fun’ is lessened, and I just want to take it out on the field and kick their…well the rest is not appropriate for TET. My hope is that this rivalry gets back to the wonderful place that it was during the Dye/Dooley years…I think Chizik is man enough to make it happen. I have no faith in Richt. None. Is it a coincidence that this rivalry started to get nasty during his tenure?

3. My heart goes out to the families impacted by the PSU scandal. Say what you want about JoePa not knowing, what have you. He has 5 children. As a parent myself, I can’t imagine NOT doing whatever I could to get to the bottom of it. He started the process by telling the President, but when it’s clear that nothing’s happening and Sandusky is still around, you have a responsibility to go to the authorities, limit Sandusky’s access to children..so many things could have been done, but WEREN’T. It’s inexcusable. I don’t give a &&&& who you are.

4. Happy Veteran’s Day to all who have served. I appreciate my freedom so much—and it has everything to do with your efforts! War Eagle!

By saying that you rolled your eyes a few times...

…I’ll take that to mean the usual — that I was right, and you found it intolerable.

I find that bit about Takeo Spikes funny too. As I watched that show, I thought “DAMN he is one scary dude” — then thought “yeah, well, a lot of athletes can look intimidating, it must just be my impression.”

Then all week on here, I’m seeing people say that same thing — and he was only on screen twice, for very short periods.

Dude IS scary. There’s an intensity to him that travels right through the camera and meets you eye-to-eye.

Oh elf,

in that you are half correct. The undercurrent of nasty started pre-Richt’s tenure. In all fairness. The real nasty started during his tenure. It might have been that things were headed that way regardless of who became Georgia’s coach. And certainly a coach has can not control the fan base. A coach can cultivate a culture, and I don’t appreciate the culture that Richt has created.

To be completely honest, I'm kind of confused by all this anti-Richt stuff all of a sudden

Where did this all come from? I’ve always heard the “Great guy, mediocre coach” stuff when people were trying to be negative about him, or that he was a high road dousche, but all of a sudden y’all make him sound like Jimmy Johnson at Miami. What “culture” has he created, and how did he go about creating it? This kind of attitude seems to have come out of nowhere, and is almost unique to this site.

by elfcrash on Nov 11, 2011 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

I've held this belief for many many years......

I can’t speak of others, and certainly don’t intend to. Although, I agree with the douche comment (leaving out the high road part)…….IRF, off the field, my guess is that he is a really nice guy. My hatred comes from the fact that he takes really great recruits and repeatedly fails to turn them into a great team. IMO, Georgia is becoming the place where great talent goes to become mediocre……I just don’t get it.

Other than a NC

There’s not much else he hasn’t done. He’s won SEC’s, he’s finished in the top 2, he’s sent tons of players to the NFL. I mean other than last year, UGA and Auburn have been very, very similar during his tenure. He just hasn’t had the luck in one season that Auburn last year (before you jump down my throat, I know it was mostly, vastly talent and coaching and blah blah blah for you guys last year, but you did have a lot of balls bounce your way). It just seems like everyone is cherry picking last year and the year before and saying “this is the kind of coach he is”, rather than looking at the previous 8 years where he was actually very successful.

You didn’t answer my question about how he has somehow made the rivalry between us more hateful. From the Georgia side, it was Mr. Fairley who did that last year.

by elfcrash on Nov 11, 2011 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

You're a reasonable fellow and I know that you deserve a reasonable answer.

I’m going to disappoint you. If I could blame hurricanes on Mark Richt, I would do so. I can’t stand the guy. Which means that I need to say just that instead of hanging the ‘sullying’ of our ‘relationship’ on his head. IMO, he has fostered the ‘whining’ about it always being someone else’s fault that that UGA didn’t win one game or the other.

by AU Tiger on Nov 11, 2011 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

I'll throw in my two cents

Just so you can’t truthfully claim “EVERY Auburn fan says that”, then next time you get it in your head to run off and start talking shit on Auburn.

I am NOT- on board with the Richt hate, dislike, or even moderate to high levels of annoyance. He has registered mild annoyance, but that’s mostly because Jack has posted that damned picture of Helen Hunt twice, and then I think about Twister, which was awful, and it was even worse because it had Bill Paxton/Pullman (as if it matters which is which)….but I digress.

I don’t see a “THUG” culture, and I admire and respect Mark Richt for what he’s done as far as discipline. What players do cannot always be helped (see also: Auburn’s four players arrested for armed robbery and general dumbf—-ery), and that’s not what a coach should be judged for.

How they respond to it IS part of what they should be judged for, and I’ve never seen a problem in that regard as far as Mark Richt is concerned.

Okay, okay...

so it is hard to tell Bill Paxton/Pullman apart. On the other stuff, I think my eyes rolled in the back of my head…I’m hoping they will reorient themselves by tomorrow’s game. Then again, the less I have to look at Mark Richt, the better for everyone.

"What culture has he created?"

Before Richt there was no Bulldog team that ran in mass to the endzone to do an in your face taunting dance to their opponent. Before Richt there was no “soldier boy” rub it in your face moments in Sanford Stadium. Before Richt there were no Ga. players sent to intentionally hurt an opposing player (no matter the perceived play of said player).

Also to answer your other question, “Where did all this come from?” It came from Richt who learned it while a player and coach at the two Thug U’s of the 80’s and 90’s. Of course you will never see it though because you don’t want to see it and because Richt has changed the culture and the Dawg nation is willfully blind.

He also has gotten the coaches that making choking signs to players and want to fight with other coaches. There seems to be trend of Thuga players being just flat out thugs.

My 2 cents on the coaching carousal. .......

I believe that the Ole Miss job will likely go to a coach who is currently readily available. Mike Leach is tops. I don’t see Richie Rod fitting in there very well. But stranger things have happened. But I like me some Tommy Tubbs back in Oxford. I know, crazy pants, right? But I think that the Houstan Nutt experience might make the Ole Tubbster look pretty good to the RebelBears right now. And you know that Ole Miss may be many things, but they’ll never go all JetGate on anyone’s ass. When they were tired of Nutters, they showed him the door. Straight up, just like their Bourbon. Like WEA said way back when, they (Ole Miss and Tubbster) both have dated other people, maybe it’s time to give it another go.

Given the high profile jobs that are becoming available, Gus has the luxury of waiting for the job that he thinks fits him best. I doubt that job is in Oxford.

by Tiger on the mountain on Nov 11, 2011 9:44 PM CST reply actions

Sorry...

…..but I think Tuberville 2.0 at Ole Miss is basically Nutt 2.0. Tuberville did a bit of over signing there, too. Or rather, inviting vast numbers of walk-ons. Worked better for Tuberville than Nutt, but still. Illegal now.

…..If I’m a Reb, I’m SCREAMING for them to hire Leach. He’d fix that mess with the mascots, pronto. He’d also not give a flying “f” about protocol, but hey. Rebs, do you want a coach who plays nice? Or one that wins? Are the Reb boosters as desperate as the Tide ones were five years ago?

…..Check Mr. Leach out here, on TV with West Virginia’s favorite skull-mullet, here One of my pet peeves about Gus Malzhan (yep, have a coach around a few years, and you figure a few out…) is the Wildcat. If you can suddenly go to it without subbing, cool. Hit ‘em off balance. Bring in a 5 guy package to run it, no. That’s what we’re doing, this year.

…..What Leach says he would do is “angle a bunch of guys in, and blow him up. (wildcat QB). I mean, what? If he’s that good running it, why isn’t he a running back?” Guy knows his stuff. The wildcat is basically simplified single-wing. It’s an option attack only in the hands of good option quarterbacks. And there’s never a defensive excuse not to blitz the heck out of it, till the wildcat QB proves he can make checks and throw.

......Drowning in cool elixir.

by Acid Reign on Nov 11, 2011 10:53 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, I agree with you....

Leach at Ole Miss would be pretty exciting. Although I think that Tubbs is a better coach than Nutters (totally biased opinion, of course). I’ve heard Richie Rod’s name mentioned, and even though he is smooze-tastic, I doubt he would fit in well in Oxford. The Rebels need, well, a Rebel. Exciting times!

Wow... I am somebody! KB quoted me.... me, little old me!

Seriously. Thanks for noticing. The words were heart felt.

And about Brother Gus… well, all I can say is if he feels the tug at this heart to go to Ole Miss, nobody get in his way. He will have to learn the Gene Chizik effect on his own. I say that because Ole Miss is going to be down for awhile. Its just a fact.

But I would offer if we think we might lose Gus… what must bama fans be thinking… because I would offer Kirby is equal if not a hotter commodity than Gus.

At the moment that is just a fact as well.

About the Cat/Dog fight… I am leaning with AU…. however, I must admit we are a bit outgunned in this match up. Let’s all pray for a miracle.
