Who can lead Auburn back from the worst beating since 1996?

War Eagle, everybody! It's homecoming week on the Plains. Auburn takes on the Samford Bulldogs, in a game expected to be a tuneup for the Iron Bowl. I'd warn Auburn folks about taking the Bulldogs lightly. I watched quite a bit of their game against the Chattanooga Moccasins on Auburn's bye Saturday. There were no afternoon SEC games that day, but Birmingham's ABC 33/40 televised that game. Amazingly, Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried were the announcers. Wow, wasn't that a blast from the past? Chattanooga won the game due to Bulldog red zone woes, but that's a pesky offense Samford has. They love quick passes to the flats. I think their slot guy has something like 73 catches so far this season. We all know how Auburn has defended those sorts of plays the past few years. Could be more of a battle this Saturday than anyone suspects.

After the worst Auburn loss to Georgia since a 41-0 beating in 1946, we've observed quite the Tiger melt-down on the message boards and al.com comments sections. Calls for coaches' heads have resumed after a hiatus last season. With 36 playing rotation folks missing from last year's title team, I'm not sure what folks were expecting. As we suspected going in, it's been an up and down year. In my opinion now is not the time to fire anybody. In my book, this staff gets a pass for this year. Things should get better next season. If they don't, well, I think we can hire some pretty good guys for the millions this staff is getting.

One of the more intriguing ideas I came across this week was a little debate on talk radio this week in the Tragic City. For my money, the best of the WJOX radio talk shows is the Roundtable in the early afternoon. On that show, the sports stories are the important thing, not the radio guys' egos. It's refreshing. What the Roundtable folks there asked is, "who should start at quarterback for Auburn against Samford?" My own previously stated belief is that it will make little difference who the quarterback is, if the line doesn't block better and more skill players aren't involved. Still, this an interesting question, and I'd love to see what our great regulars think in the comments! And note: none of this is a call for someone to be benched. We will cheer on whomever the coaches put out there.

I'll make my own cases. After watching this season, I think Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley are both capable of playing winning SEC ball, IF they are given time to throw. Probably the worst knock on Moseley is that he has two pick-sixes, to Trotter's one, and he's played fewer minutes. Both guys started strong, then when the pressure came, there were mistakes. Neither guy has been able to rise above his teammates' flaws, nor raise them to the next level. Breaking the two down, I think Moseley is a couple of inches taller, is slightly faster, and has a stronger arm. Trotter has (maybe) an experience edge. From a pure stats point of view, Moseley has a big edge. (HT Auburntigers.com)

PASSING GP Effic Cmp-Att-Int Pct Yds TD Lng Avg/G
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Barrett Trotter 7 125.34 81-149-6 54.4 1009 10 56 144.1
Clint Moseley 7 147.97 41-66-2 62.1 565 4 45 80.7
Kiehl Frazier 10 38.56 5-10-2 50.0 34 0 14 3.4

Obviously, neither guy is going to win a footrace. Trotter's averaging one yard per carry, and Moseley is sitting at negative 4.8.

The most interesting suggestion was to start Kiehl Frazier the next two games. Many folks have opined that the Malzhan offense won't work without a running quarterback. (That's despite evidence to the contrary with Chris Todd...) Frazier has 216 rushing yards on the season and a 4.5 yard per carry average. The idea would be to go ahead and try to get Frazier as much experience as possible, as he might be the future of the program at quarterback.

The case against Frazier is this: He's tried all of three throws down the field this season. Two were intercepted, and the other was way underthrown towards a wide open man, and batted away. And Frazier has not seen much of an SEC pass rush. Folks are still surprised when he drops back. I have little doubt that Kiehl Frazier could put up some interesting numbers against Samford. But he has not faced a pass rush or a blazing secondary like he would see in the Iron Bowl. Putting Frazier out there against Bama on Thanksgiving Weekend would not be a kindness, nor would it help Auburn keep it close. Most importantly, I think it would be of little benefit going forward, and there's certainly the possibility of injury or a fatal blow to one's confidence.

My vote is to stick with Clint Moseley and get him as many reps against Samford as possible. He's seen LSU's defense, and that of UGA's Todd Grantham, which is playing pretty well of late. If nothing else, Moseley knows how fast it's all going to be coming at him, and he's been the guy for a few weeks. Unless Trotter has shown something in practice that wasn't there in late September and October, I think that's how it has to go. I have confidence that coaches Chizik and Malzhan will make whatever move gives us the best chance going forward. I've never really doubted that.

This Samford game is a chance to work out some kinks on this team. With the loss of veteran corner T'Sharvan Bell to a knee injury, it's audition time at cornerback. We've got some exciting choices, but they'll have to step up and claim it. Based on what I've seen in the games I've attended, I like Jonathan Mincy's physical approach. I think he's got the inside track to earn an Iron Bowl start.

This week is also a chance for some receivers to step up and make a statement. We'll need more than Blake and Lutzenkirchen available against Bama. We've heard bragging from Trooper Taylor every week for the past month on an "expanded role" for Trovon Reed in the receiving corps. The only expanded role we've seen thus far is on the "missing persons" list. Personally, I think when Trooper's lead quotes are are about "limping on your own time," and Cadillacs being out of gas, he's not happy with his unit.

Here's hoping for a happy homecoming for the Tigers. I know the show with Pat Sullivan and the great Auburn players from circa 1970 will be special. This bespectacled kid at ten years old wanted to BE Terry Beasley, but alas, it wasn't happening. We'll have our usual open thread up at TrackEmTigers.com. My own plans are still up in the air. I don't have digital cable, so PPV is out. I might be able to finagle a way to watch on ESPN-3. I've got two party invites. And my son's playing a pretty tough tennis tournament this weekend. Where I'll end up during gametime is still undecided. Whether I do a play by play or not, I'll try to get in where I can and offer noisy commentary! And, I'm DEFINITELY at the keyboard for the Iron Bowl! War Eagle, and let's stomp Samford!

In a perfect world...

Moseley starts throw 3 quick TD’s and we get him out of there and let Trotter and Frazier split time trying to get ready for Bama. In the real world, Moseley probably plays at least 3 qtrs.

I guess I’m confused by Frazier. Seems he was a top 5 QB recruit wasn’t he? 40+ touchdowns in HS? Did he suddenly forget how to throw? Or Read a defense? or is it just a freshman thing? Hoping he’s the “next big thing.” Aren’t we all?

I would vote that Clint gets to play....

Moseley to start the game, would be the right choice in my opinion. Hopefully he gets to play the entire first half, develop a rhythm and some much need synchronization with his “O” line. He can start the second half, maybe the first two drives, then let the others get some time playing in the Homecoming Game.

I can not see, our offense struggling against Samford. If there are struggles, it will be penalties.
Enjoyed the post Acid. Informative, and insightful. Thanks!

Moseley is the only choice

It is clear, it is definite, it is not even questionable in my opinion. Moseley is the only guy we have that can make SEC caliber throws. If he has time in the pocket I think he is very effective, but thats the big if. He would be better in a traditional pro style offense but of course that aint gonna happen so lets stick with the here and now. He has poise, touch and can make progression reads….even if it is only two or three. I have not seen that from Trotter against a team with a decent secondary since the MSU game. Trotter also just doesn’t have the arm or the touch, from what I’ve seen. His head is probably still on Mars anyway.
Frazier MAY be the guy but we just haven’t seen enough of a representative sampling to make an educated decision. Obviously the coaches aren’t concerned about his passing skill development at all at this point, or he would be throwing the ball more. Then there’s the concern that he CAN’T throw the ball and all of his stats in HS were to wide open guys streaking down the field, who could run under or wait on the delivery. Given our line situation it might make more sense to play Frazier but we are pretty one dimensional as it is, so unless we bring back the single wing with three tight ends and an additional blocking back……hey, that actually might work!!

Hopefully we can get a lead early and Frazier will get some reps running the whole offense. I know Moseley can do it but I think we all need to see what Frazier can do. Besides its a very real possiblity that Moseley and Trotter get broken into thirds by Bama so its probably a good idea to get Frazier some practice scrambling from a passing play and throwing off his back foot when someone is about to crush him.

Oh and I did see Trovon Reed last week in Athens….granted it was on the side of a milk carton. Apparently his talent has been abducted by the ghost of DeAngelo Bentons potential.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

LOL.... now who is negative? You peg me as a glass half empty kind of guy... :)

Interestingly enough… I think it worthy to note that current coaching staff rhetoric is to still promote that Trevon is healthy… I am not really sure what that does for us except to feel good about Trevon being healthy. Yeah Trevon…

Yet… on a slightly different note… I think the news of losing the offensive GURU is starting to pick up steam. Chizik said yesterday that if he is faced with the circumstances of replacing Malzahn, system philosophy would take a backseat to overall fit. Indications are that Malzahn will be a candidate for the North Carolina head coaching position. “If any of my coaches leave, we’ll replace them with who we feel is the best fit,” Chizik said. “And that’s what we’ll always base it on.” Chizik stated he has not been contacted by any other schools in regards to his assistants.

This is the FIRST time I have heard this much information on “what if”.

Here is a question:

What happens IF the unthinkable happens. Who do we get???

Does AU stay with the SPREAD?

Auburn does not run the spread...

It’s a run first, misdirection, play action pass offense

So does AU stay with the “run first, misdirection, play action pass offense?”

OR

RFMPAPO for short.

Still a valid question…

LOL...

That is what Malzahn has been calling this offense all along. The media just says “Spread”. I really could care less what they call it, it has been effective at times.
The problem with any offense? Every single player has to complete their assignment, and on time, for it to work properly. This season, we ain’t doing it properly, or on time…

And after 10 games...

of folks not completing their assignments… exactly how does that get corrected?

Players giving more effort? According to Chizik… that is happening…. in practice.

Hmmm. This is a puzzler.

by wde1988 on Nov 17, 2011 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s definitely a puzzler.
When I looked at the teams preseason, I saw only two good QB’s around the SEC. They would be Murray with UGA and the kid at Arkansas. Every other team either had a relatively unknown, or a “Garcia” if you will. I went ahead and scratched Arky, and LSU as losses, and actually thought we might lose to Miss State or Clemson, and get better as the season progressed, barring major injuries.
We have had a ton of injuries, and up until the UGA game, I was seeing improvement. That game was a real letdown, for me.
Now, I want to see a sound fundamental game played against Samford, so I can hope we have a chance against Bama.
If we somehow pull off the upset against the process, then we will all look at this season as a rebuilding year. If we get curb stomped, we will have a ton of questions, and will have to wait a long time(next season) to get any answers.

Quick question...

I haven’t seen all of Auburn’s games so y’all will know better than I, but didn’t Trotter’s downturn coincide with Blake getting hurt? I have seen enough to know that Blake is your main threat, and if this is indeed the case, it seems a little unfair to Barrett, since Moseley has had Blake available during his starts. Like I said, I haven’t seen all that much of Auburn, so I will leave this one to y’all.

by tylerj19 on Nov 17, 2011 8:23 AM CST reply actions

Kind of, but not really

Trotter officially fell into the abyss of indecision in the Clemson game, IMO. When the pressure was on you could see it in his mannerisms in the pocket..happy feet…patting the ball…staring down receivers….double pumping to “load up” the throw so he could force it where it shouldn’t be going. All the tell tales signs of someone VERY uncomfortable with their task. Staring down receivers, is common in college, but Trotter took it a new level of laser eyed tracking.
We were able to escape USC with a win becuase we spent the whole game on their side of the field and the fact that Garcia was drunk, I think.
Blake got hurt in the Arky game but the wheels were already off for Trotter and it was apparent that we needed to give someone else a shot. I think when Chizik saw we had the opportunity to beat Florida because of their QB situation, he pulled the trigger on Moseley, who didn’t do great but was MUCH more effective than Trotter was.

To borrow a phrase...

“I would #!@@ on a spark plug if I knew it would do any good”

And considering that we have seen what Barrett could do and now we have seen what Mosely can do I think its time to go to the next step. I absoutely don’t mean any disrespect to either of these fine kids… they absolutely have skill. But what about Frazier?

It only makes sense considering our inability to catch the ball when is thrown… why not have another running back as QB?

Doing the same old thing and expecting different result… is the very definition of insanity.

That wouldn't hurt my feelings

I do think Moseley gives a better “CHANCE” to win, given that he can deliver the ball better than Trotter and, presumably, Fraizer. But that chance is still being chased by “None” on the edge of town…..so why not put Frazier in? Sure its tantamount to giving up but our line is so beat up and slow that Aaron Rodgers would like a hack out there.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

Well fine, since we're all getting to put our plans out there...

O-Mac takes all of the snaps in the wildcat formation.

I’m only half-kidding.

What? You think the results would somehow be WORSE? If the person lining up under center has to spend all four quarters running for their lives, why not make sure that person is a legitimate running threat?

On the plus side, it plays to Malzahn’s tired tendency to run the O-Mac sweep on second down. Maybe we could even explore the exciting possibilities of swapping “Dyer-Between-Tackle” and “O-Mac Sweep” in our traditional three-and-out plan.

And the only real difference then is who throws the errant / ill-advised / horribly underpowered / horribly overthrown / thrown-behind-the-receiver pass on third-and-a-bus-ride.

Seriously… I know I am giving our coaches a hard time… but that is part of their job (and they are paid well) and I do realize they don’t have many options. I am just trying to think outside the box considering the question being asked.

I think the key for AU is the O-line. They make the system work! I think the kid that went to Wisconsin saw that clearly and made his decision accordingly. We just all thought that Grimes could make lemonade out of lemons. The truth is that it takes time to develop a good offensive lineman. I wonder considering our depth if there has been any thought at putting Ladarious Phillips as a OT or maybe guard? LOL.

Start Moseley; mop up with Frazier.

Here’s the deal: talent-wise, Mosely and Trotter are about the same. Trotter’s confidence has been irreparably harmed. It’s a bummer, because I think that he is a good kid.

Moseley needs to get back in the groove so that he can pump up the O-line. Also, he needs a boost after last week’s beat down…just to remind himself that , yes, he can be an effective quarterback. But then the dude needs some rest. The Iron Bowl will be epic (hopefully not in a bad way).

The second half should be Frazier. When I Frazier play, I see a wee one who is confused. All the talent in the world won’t help that kid understand. Maybe being able to get into a rhythm will.

All quarterbacks need some confidence. Let’s hope they find it this weekend. I don’t want the Iron Bowl lost before we even get started. War Eagle!

“Those young guys need time to get in the weight room. They have to get bigger, stronger, faster and smarter. We aren’t going to win every game every year, and especially not with as many young guys playing as we have. It’s going to take time. And as smart football fans, we should know that.”

This is disconcerting to me.

We all understand this... right?

But that’s what good coaching is supposed to correct. Or at least that is what I choose to believe.

I am not sure they realize that this article basically says the rest of the season is a wash??

It might just be me… but this article by Jeff Lee is a PR disaster.

It goes on to say:

“When you lose 20-something seniors and 19 starters it is going to be tough for anyone in the country to overcome,” said Burns. “We as fans have to understand how much we really lost.”

And what Auburn has replaced them with.

“I look out there and see freshmen all over the field,” said Burns. “And when you have that many young guys playing, you are going to have mistakes. You are going to have missed tackles, blown assignments. You’re going to get beat deep. Those things happen.”

This is game #11 right? How much time do you need to actually show improvement?

But wait… there is more:

“It’s tough for the freshmen because when they are out there, who do they look to? A sophomore?,” said Burns. “It’s tough playing as a freshman, especially when you are out there with other freshmen and several sophomores.”

How about the training they got in PRACTICE from their COACHES. OR even better their COACHES?

And last…

“It’s a whole different ball game when you are a freshman,” said Burns. "Not only are you not as physical as the guy you are going against that has been there 2-3 years, but you also don’t understand what it means to be in the film room, and all the time and hard work you have to put in.

“You are still trying to figure out how to get to class. It’s tough. It’s a big transition. You are going to make mistakes and we as fans need to understand that and stick behind them no matter what.”

Yeah. But what about GAME # 11?? Or Game # 12 against your biggest rival?

I think we are throwing our hands up. And we wonder where the team got that from last week?

Whew. I need a Tums!

"Missoura folk" like to "drank"

It’s just what they do. I argued with someone yesterday about the trailer trash whiskey “drankin” Missoura mama who offed her youth. I said she lives in Kansas City. He said she lives in St. Louis. It turns out a trailer trash whiskey “drankin” “Missoura” mama in Kansas City offed her toddler AND a trailer trash whiskey “drankin” :Missoura" mama in St. Louis environs offed her toddler too this month! And now they trailer trash “Missoura” coach “done” gone to the honky tonk “awhiskey drankin” and got himself one of “them there” DUIs. No wonder “Missoura” is called “The Whiskey Drankin Trailer Trash State.” (jk) Still, the SEC wondering just what kind of “whiskey drankin” trailer trash they have invited. Still, I welcome “Missoura” to the SEC, even if they should be in the west since they are, well, west of just about everything in the SEC.
P.S. If you want to see lots (hundreds) of whiskey “drankin” trailer trash “Missoura” folk in and around their “Missoura” trailer homes, here is a good site: www.missouritrailertrash.com

Go Tigers! (Auburn ones) Beat Samford! Better luck against them than you had against “them dawgs”!

Frazier = Star Jones?

I’ve seen some, hell I’ve even made some bad analogies before-that one is just wrong.
I’d like to see Star Jones try and run against an SEC defense. Heck, as little regard as I have for Star Jones, i’d like to see her try to run against an SEC defense behind our O Line. That’s be just about the end of her I imagine.

But, I’ve never seen her throw the deep out either, maybe she can.
