Can Auburn Play Spoiler on Saturday?
Last week this time we thought Saturday's Iron Bowl would only matter to Alabama residents; then came the most unlikely college football weekend in memory. Oklahoma State: Gone. Oregon: Gone. Oklahoma: Gone. Suddenly, Auburn has again been thrust into the national spotlight.
Only the Tigers stand in the way of a BCS championship game appearance by Alabama. The question this week is whether we'll see a performance from Auburn like 2008 or 2009. If this past Saturday is any indication, it should make for a long afternoon. But we know this game is rarely that cut and dry.
With ESPN's College GameDay in town and a raucous Auburn crowd expected, anything's possible when all the pressure is squarely on Alabama. The Tide has come to Jordan-Hare Stadium twice before in similar circumstances.
In 1989, Alabama was cut down by an orange-and-blue buzz saw in its first visit to the Plains. The second-ranked Tide only needed a win over Auburn to play for the title. They lost that day 30-20.
Two years ago, behind the creative play calling of Gus Malzahn, Auburn nearly ambushed the eventual national champions, losing in the final seconds.
Does Malzahn have a thick enough playbook to make up for the lack of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball? Is there anything the Auburn defense can do to stop Trent Richardson? It's hard to see a way on this Monday.
You've heard the old saying that a team is always getting better or worse, but never staying the same. I'm not sure this group falls in the first category. I hope I'm wrong.
This past Saturday's game with Samford may go down as the most boring in Auburn history. The Auburn players seemed only slightly more interested in being there than the fans in attendance. The loudest cheer came in pregame for Pat Sullivan.
Even with the game seemingly close in the third quarter, neither players nor fans appeared overly concerned. Coming off the Georgia beating, you would think Auburn would be out to prove something, even against Samford. I guess not.
Then again, look at the performances by Alabama, Florida and South Carolina against Southern Conference opponents on Saturday. All were sleepwalking through the afternoon.
I got the feeling there were as many fans in attendance to witness the pregame presentation honoring Pat Sullivan as there was for the game. Speaking of Sullivan, the ceremony honoring him was classy and past due. A tip of the hat to the Auburn team for raising their helmets high in the air as Sullivan was honored. Having both squads on the field for the presentation was special.
In case you missed it, ESPN GameDay personality Lee Corso let the F-Bomb fly during Saturday's live broadcast. He uttered the words during the closing segment of the show. It just came out. The best part was seeing Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit react. Funny stuff.
During the heydays of Florida and Tennessee, the SEC West was an afterthought. Who could have dreamed what was around the corner. The top three ranked teams in America now reside in the SEC West. A fourth team is the defending national champion. And then there are the Mississippi programs. How would you like to be them today?
Has a play-by-play announcer ever had a better weekend of calling football than ESPN's Joe Tessitore? He called both Oklahoma upsets. On Friday, he was in Ames, Iowa for the Cyclones win over Oklahoma State; and on Saturday, called Baylor's upset of the Sooners. I wonder if CBS would be interested in hiring him for Saturday's Iron Bowl?
Anyone who says they have a clue where Auburn will go bowling is lying. The Tigers have been linked to the Gator, Chick-Fil-A, Music City and Cotton bowls to name just a few. A win by Georgia in the SEC Championship game could throw everything up in the air. My vote: Let's go back to Atlanta. The Chick-Fil-A is the best small bowl in America.
My gut tells me that both Gus Malzahn and Ted Roof will be gone at season's end. Malzahn's departure will be by choice. Roof's not so much. Another assistant who needs to get his act together is Trooper Taylor. While he gets an A+ on the recruiting trail, his receivers have underachieved all season.
There are rumors floating around that offensive line coach Jeff Grimes may leave at the end of the season. Some believe he will follow Malzahn. Should Malzahn land the North Carolina job, you can bet safeties coach Tommy Thigpen will go with him. Thigpen is a former Tar Heels player and assistant coach.

Well, it's Iron Bowl week
Good job Jay. Allow me to be the first to weigh in. I for one have been looking forward to this week and dreading it all at the same time. I believe we will know the outcome in the first quarter. This team does not have the explosiveness to come from behind like last year. We must get up early in this contest and the crowd must be LOUD. If the crowd takes a collective nap like they did last Sat. we are in big(bigger) trouble.
The homer in my is holding out an inkling of hope of the upset but the logical part of me says it will be a curb stomping.

Joe Tessitore is a very underrated announcer...
he’s not as well known as some announcers, but he is very good. I’ve always enjoyed hearing him call games, and especially boxing on Friday Night Fights. Good luck to y’all this week, although I honestly hope we beat you by 30, in the friendliest way possible ;-).
Seconded, about Tessitore
If only you could get him without Rod Gilmore.

The Bammers who are already booking their trips to New Orleans are making a mistake...And Auburn can still do something about it...
I’ll go on record predicting an LSU-Okie State title game.
We just need you guys to keep it close, single digits, but a win would obviously be nice.

Actually the math agrees with me
it will take the human element jumping OSU over Bama to over take them….the computers only count for 1/3 of the formula and Bama got almost every 2nd place vote there was…..so the math doesn’t disagree with me…..there will be a rematch if Bama wins out….

Only 26% of voters will have to move OSU over Bama for OSU to jump bama in the BCS.
Bama will still be ahead of OSU in the polls, but point wise it will be enough. OSU’s computer score is that much better. That is assuming that OSU doesn’t have any votes that put them worse than 3rd. Which won’t happen. But a Va Tech loss coupled with an Arkansas loss starts to make those numbers real.
I think OSU will need about 30-35% of the second place votes to pass bama. Will they get them? Who knows.
Bama nerd math agree’s with this LSU nerd math…

Over 25 percent
Is a big shift considering they had the opportunity to vote bam a down for two weeks and not only haven’t they gone down they moved up. Are you considering that bam a will improve in the computer if they win Saturday? Voters won’t forgive the bed crapping in Ames. Bam a lost in ot. There will be a rematch if bam a wins. Buckle up.

Bama won't improve in the computers
They can’t make a dent in LSU’s score (unless we lose), and the only other team in front of Bama is OSU, who plays a much better opponent. When you take into account that Bama’s best two wins (Arky and Penn St) are huge underdogs, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Bama’s score has nowhere to go but down.

I was there... and you are correct Jay...
My primary reason for being there was a father-son excursion. We had scholarship seats on the 50 yard line and parking next to the stadium. I had bought the tickets in September in a local fund raiser.
A lot of things happened since that time. We lost to Clemson, ARK, LSU, and Georgia.
But… when I heard that Pat Sullivan was going to be there… and more importantly they were going to recognize him…. well, I was all in. The way the Auburn team treated him… well, I can just say it was moving. Very classy indeed. I loved it that his former team mates were there to receive honors as well.
Do you know the names of the former players that were in attendance on the field? I think one of them might be someone I knew when I was a kid. His name was Phillip Martin. He used to coach at Hoover Athletics and was my former coach. He was the first coach of Trace Armstrong (who didn’t go to AU but did play in the pros). There were others too. I would love to get in touch with him. I have always held him in high regard.
About the game:
Our play was in a word: dispirited. I saw little if any improvement from the Georgia debacle. Fumbles… poor blocking, bad passes… poor tackling… the same mistakes that have plagued us all season continued in earnest. What’s more, our tackle, Mosley was hurt. The one bright spot was after a fumble by the McCalleb on a handoff from Mosley in the backfield and on our side of the field… I think I saw Gus Mulzahn actually levitate. While I thought it was a bit late, it was somewhat refreshing to know that someone on the AU sideline at least understood that in a week’s time a true contender for the National Championship was coming to Jordan Hare and the implications that kind of play would make. Or in other words… it would make the Georgia game’s outcome pale in comparison.
Speaking solely for myself I will NEVER concede to bama. EVER! But at the end of the day… and in an attempt to be realistic to myself… a slugger’s chance is all that I will give us. I mean, if you can’t get your kids up for Georgia… I am not sure how you could get them excited for bama. I think, considering, that bama’s defense is so smothering… I see a 35-42 point difference in the game. After watching every game this season… I think it would take divine intervention for AU to pull the upset. Folks better be prepared. Although, stranger things have happened for sure… next Saturday will be one of the darkest days in recent memory for Auburn’s football program.
While most folks have put this season’s poor performance on the backs of our young players and having an inexperienced team… I put it on Coaching. I have been on record since the Georgia loss. Now, after a few weeks of reflection, and considering that our losses has come to 2 of the top 3 teams in the Nation… and Clemson… and soon to be bama barring a miracle, I will concede that it was a series of unfortunate events and primarily being in the SEC WEST. Our schedule was unbelievably tough! Still, I have to say that AU has done well considering.
But unlike 2009 where there was only blue skies in our future, I see Auburn’s football program at a cross roads. Depending on some major decisions… there are dark clouds on the horizon which could rock our program significantly. Which direction will AU take? Hopefully it will be the right one. I happen to think you are right about the coaching changes that are coming. I see MAJOR rotation ahead in our staff. Unfortunately for Auburn… I don’t see how that doesn’t impact us in recruiting. I think it is a given.
For the life of me, I am not sure why we don’t have the stability like other major programs. But it is the nature of the beast. We will have to deal with it. And it will be a negative thing unless we restock with folks (coaches) that are even better than the ones we had. We will probably see an impact very soon from our current recruiting class. But who knows… maybe folks will stay for Chizik? Ultimately, I hope that Coach Chizik can orchestrate another coup when it comes to a staff like he did when he was picked for the job three years ago. His job depends on it.
Folks can claim that true blue AU folks will understand if things go south… I say baloney! At the end of the day… it’s about moving a program forward and keeping it relevant. You can’t do that from the cellar of the SEC. We have come too far… and suffered too much to endure a reversal of fortunes. We cannot allow Auburn to slip. It is my solemn prayer that it will not.
War Eagle!
And BEAT BAMA!!!!
changes
For the life of me, I am not sure why we don’t have the stability like other major programs.
I’m supposing it is because we are in the SEC West. The most dominant division in the most dominant conference in all of college football. And because of that we cannot criticize our coaches. You must either follow blindly or call for the coaches head after every bad game. There is no gray area…;)
In all seriousness we have kept continuity with this staff for 3 years. We lost rocker whom I liked, but 95% continuity might as well be 100%. Sometimes change is good though. 2 years removed from Tubs (who I defended while he duck hunted) and we won a national championship. I hate the prospect of the kids learning a new system next year since our schedule is favorable on even # years. On the other hand look at our losses. Currently to the #1 and #3 team in the BCS, a really good clemson team that suddenly remembered they’re clemson, but will probably still win the ACC, and the best team in the SEC East…all on the road. I’m ok with those losses considering the playmakers and senior leaders we lost last year. Heck even if we lose to bama that’s still 5 losses with 3 coming from the top 3 teams in the country! Not too shabby by most* standards. Thankfully those are the Jones’ we have to keep up with…bet houston and boise were wishing they played in a stronger conference about now. Keep the faith my good man. We’ve been hoping to see better execution for 11 weeks. Maybe this is THE week.
most*- pretty much anywhere besides the SEC west!

LOL... I like your sense of humor... and you are right.
There is some light there… we do need to remember the positives. It’s just that this season has given off the light of a 40 watt bulb. Beating bama would definitely make a huge difference… maybe like a 120 watts or something.
I know… we just need to all NUT UP!!!

In Spite Of My Trying To Be Optimistic About The Outcome Of This Game........
I must say that’s the funniest post I have seen on here in a long time! The pictures along with your caption is priceless. I just showed it to my wife……….she was crying from laughing so hard. Good job SEC SUP!
Does anyone know
how full the hayfields on Donahue are? I know that the rv’s that came for Samford were permitted to stay through this Sunday for the Iron Bowl, but we did not go. We will be there at 2 on Wednesday when the fields open up again. Just wanted to know if there will be much room left. Thanks!
I just saw a long range weather forecast for Sat in Auburn
There is a chance for some pretty significant weather. I would not mind a torrential downpour. It would have to benefit us.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
Save yourself the heartbreak
Expect Auburn to lose. Yes I will be yelling and screaming my heart out for the Tigers like always. But there is less than 1% chance we beat Bama. With great execution and some trickery we might score first. WE might even keep it close for one quarter. Two quarters is less likely but possible. But the 3 and 4th quarters will be ugly guaranteed. So just be ready for it.
What is wrong with you people????!!!!
Holy Cow! Y’all are giving up before we even head to practice much less the stadium. Have you learned nothing from the history of this rivalry! It’s the most magical week in football; ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!! Why because anything can and has happened in the Iron Bowl—on both sides.
I’m only going to say this one time: NUT UP! Put those gloomy faces away; it’s time to get the pads on, get behind our team and scream War Eagle until we are hoarse. Bama is coming to our House and they have to get through us to get a back door into the BCS MNC. If you have any doubt that we can do this, stay home. These kids need you to be All In!! If we expect them to go to the game and put their hearts and souls out there on that field, the least we can do is support them….110%. In the words of Takeo Spikes: ‘War F#$%ing Eagle’!

Maybe it's just the Monday talking, but...
If you have any doubt that we can do this, stay home.
I am.
And I guarantee you that it won’t impact either: 1) the outcome; or 2) the magnitude of ass-whooping that we’ve likely got coming our way.
These kids need you to be All In!!
I think the team needed these kids to be “ALL IN”. See also: Deangelo Benton, Trovon Reed, Quan Bray, Ladarious Phillips, three-quarters of our defense on Saturday.
Those that didn’t underachieve (e.g.: Benton, Reed) still didn’t seem to be getting it (e.g.: Holland, any member of our secondary).
That’s not meant as a cheap shot against any of our players — it’s a justification for why we’re skeptical. If we can barely out-scheme and out-execute the likes of Utah State, then you’ll have to pardon some of us for having spent the past four weeks in one long sustained cringing motion.
It’s the most magical week in football
The word I would have picked was “insufferable,” then again, there a plenty of ’Bama fans around here. More than enough to go around. (Seriously, you want a few? We can ship them up there.)
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Everyone is alowed a case of the Monday's....
did that just make you shrivel up and cringe? Good.
I know that many will view me as unrealistic, but I go into every game thinking that we can win. And I will tell you right now, that my heart will be broken on Saturday if we get walloped. Now I realize that getting walloped is a distinct possibility BUT til that final second ticks down, I scream ‘War Eagle’ until I can’t scream any more….that’s just me. I don’t believe in hemming and hawing and wringing of hands; if I’m behind this team, and I am, I owe it to them not be all half-assed about it. Capice?

Thank God For Tiger On the Mountain!!!!!!!!
My goodness! Until I read TOTM’s post I had my pistol loaded and pointed at my head! If the team reads this thread, they wont even come to the game!!!!!
Listen, I am in no way gullable enough to ingnore the odds. I know these guys have a HUGE hill to climb if they are going to pull off a win. But yes, this is IRON BOWL week. Things are different. It’s not like every other game. The only Irom Bowl blowout I can remember was 2008 and the program was in total disarray.
I think we see a game more closely resembling 2009. Malzahn knows what he has to do with this squad to win. He’s not going to do it lining up and playing smash mouth football with this defense. He’s gonna try and skin this rabbit any way he can and I promise you, you’ll see him pulling a few plays out of the book that no one has seen. And IF, IF, IF they are successful, you will have a game on your hands. If this offense finds the end zone early, the defense will respond.
A lot has to go right for this team to win. But it has in the past. It can happen again. I remember watching the 89 game. A lot of people thought we could win that game just on the merits of it being the first Iron Bowl played a JHS. And maybe thats why we did. Me, I wasn’t so sure. Bama had that “luck” syndrome a team needs to win a NC. They had won close games because things fell their way. We had struggled that year. But look at the outcome.
If we get blown out, I wont be shocked. But I wont be shocked if we win or loss by 3. Now, maybe I’ll be shocked if we win by 30. ^:)
But TOTM, keep up the faith. You’ve at least got one partner that will scream for 60 minutes with you!

Of course,
you can play spoiler. Right now both of our teams are 0-0. Our team better exemplify Saban’s philosophy of never look at the scoreboard to perfection. 24-0. We screwed that one up, and you never gave up, playing 60 minutes.
Regarding Ted Roof, let’s say we do win big, we may be doing you an inadvertent favor, if he is not already on his way out. Though you played good run defense last year, overall you haven’t had your defensive mojo in a while. Auburn D is Dye, Hall, Oliver, Tuberville, Chizik, Muschamp, and Rhoads.
Good luck!
