Catharsis, Baby!
How many Tigers out there thought that Trent Richardson and that Smelley-guy ran over us for 500+ yards???? Hands up....Still waiting.......come one, really???!!!
If your hands are still up, you are wrong. Wrong. That's right: WRONG. The mighty Crimson Tide managed only 397 (albeit, effective) yards against our Auburn Tigers. As an observer I never saw our Tigers give up, despite what the 140 total yards of Offense might suggest. They kept go after IT. Yes, there were bad angles on Defense. First Downs?! (I'm sure those were Ted Roof's fault too. <sarcasm font implied>) Yes, there were plays that YOU in the stands or off of that couch could have made! But, They didn't and You didn't. So where does that leave us????...a winning season and Bowl eligible. Yes, the sky is totes Falling.
Tigers out there, who want continuity (oh, You know who you are), stand up; be heard: This IS NOT the time to be firing the Defensive Coordinator. A year removed from the National Championship and you want the DC removed. Are you F&^%ing mental! Really??? If CGC believes in the DC who are You to say otherwise? And I don't believe this BS of 'eyes on the sidelines'.... Unless you ARE CGC's inner-twitter, feed shut the *(&! up (and CGC doesn't have a legit twitter account, or I would be ALL over that, and if you're Mrs. CGC then Bully for you, baby!....).
I, for One, am proud to say that I think Ted Roof deserves another year. Nut Up, party people, and if you aren't up for growing a pair, at the very least, attempt to grow some Patience.

I agree. I never saw our guys give up which gave me a sense or pride and hope for the future of our team. I did see some questionable coaching moves (run out the clock before the half while down to the #2 team and your arch rival AND you get the ball back after the half while down by 17? Really??? Just think if we had gotten a touchdown and then had the kick return. How would the game have played out from there?).
I’m torn on Roof though. He hasn’t really been given the tools to succeed except for last year when things finally came together. Then again, it’s his job to find those tools and make it happen. And after 3 years, I would like to see a defense that resembles the ones of Auburn’s past.

I've made it clear throughout the year about my thoughts on Roof...
And they havent really hanged more or less… evolved if you will.
this is part of a comment i made earlier in the day durin the gameday thread. It chronicles my ideas on the reason Roof will be gone at the end of the season.
And I agree about out front 7. That also goes for our O-Line. Next year, after a year off with Yox, I’m projecting a improvement of leaps and bounds.. My problem with Roof is not necessarily a pure Roof problem. We seem to be running some sort of Chizik Tampa-2 Roof super blitz super physical hybrid. The problem with this is that it takes above average players to play a Tampa-2 which currently we either A) dont have or B) havent developed yet. The Tampa is for the most part an outdated system. It dominates Pro style offences( look at our stats under durring the Chizik era and the dominance of the Bucs for which the system was named) yet it is only effective against the spread IF you have the above average personnel . As more spread ideas are integrated into Pro sets we end up having major holes in our D.
The Roof/Gene Hybrid has good potential but we dont have either the personnel or the position coaches to implement . which is why i say for the time being we abandon the experiment for a few years, Get Gene and a DC who are on the same page and we can try this experiment again down the road when we have the personnel needed. I dont believe this will be a hostile exit, but a mutual agreement which will leave a good taste in all our mouths.
We have some future starts out there now but they are not ready. Lets get a few years and fill out the roster then reevaluate and either we will have a marked improvement in which no changes are necessary or we an try again.
P.S. please excuse any rambling repeating and spelling and grammars
You make some excellent points.

Thank you TOTM
I will say I was very very pleased with our D this week though. They did that they had to uuntil deep in the game when a lack of offensive production and inalility to sustain drives had us so tired Alabama ST. could have scored on us.

What I liked best
is that one of our TD’s came from the Defense. Were we able to get something/anything going on offense, the outcome might have been a lot different…..we agree on this point.

Sorry Tiger
You’re a sweet gal and I love ya, but you are DEAD WRONG ON THIS.
Roof needs to go. The incompetence of the defense has gotten progressively worse every year he’s been here. It’s a large part Chizik’s fault, too, but Roof is going to bear the brunt of the blame.
Fire Roof. I’m sorry.
We are just going to have to agree to disagree.
I just took some Tums, so I’m ready to read your post now….

Well TOTM
I do feel like this was partly geared in my direction. I stopped the coordinator issues for the game. You and I will have to agree to disagree. I think Roof is gone soon anyway whether I want it to happen or not. For the record, I wasn’t happy with our offensive production or lack thereof either. It was painful and extremely hard to watch but I did watch the whole thing and it was exactly what I knew would happen. The biggest change must come from the offensive and defensive lines. It doesn’t matter about anything else right now, our line play is horrible on both sides of the ball except for Egua and Lemonier on defense, and Reese Dismukes on offense though Dismukes wasn’t anywhere close to great he was still the best lineman we had this season. I will not understand why we redshirted those three OL like we did. It killed us and we never recovered.
If you want the most powerful argument to get rid of Gus Malzahn, just look at what was done with Khiel Frazier. His redshirt was completely wasted and still I do not understand why we used it like we did. Honestly, that alone makes me put Gus on notice too. I think the offensive lack of production stems from no offensive line whatsoever and three terrible quarterbacks. That said, this offense’s production in 2011 was completely unacceptable. Therefore, I do think Malzahn should be on notice next season. If you want to bring up the championship, though, remember the offense is the main reason Auburn won the national championship. Not its defense though the unit did have some very good performances like Oregon.
Continuing, Frazier might not be that bad, but the way they played him put him in a situation where he came out looking terrible. I’m not sold he’ll be any better next year. If he or Moseley don’t DRASTICALLY improve, Auburn will only win seven games again in 2012. With the talent we’ve got coming in, that is simply not acceptable period. If this team goes anything less than 9-3 next year I think the whole staff needs an overhaul. We have incredible athletes and loads of talent. Next year, we need to make use of them.
The line play also has to be fixed. I will say that Auburn has tons of athletes on the field next year and another top recruiting class coming in next fall. The offensive line should be a major upgrade next year but you never know until they start playing again. The offensive line these last few games looked like they quit trying. I just kept hearing they were all hurt and all banged up which leads me to my next point.
I’m sick of hearing about “Yoxercise” too! How many season ending injuries did Auburn rack up this year and last year and the year before that etc. Hell, what about for the last five years? Evidently, “Yoxercise” is a recipe for terrible injuries or just about your entire team being “pretty banged up” all season long. I think more than anybody, Yox needs to go and he needs to go yesterday! I’m tired of seeing player after player go down with some sort of career altering injuries. Hell, how many season ending injuries keep happening in Fall Camp before the damned season ever gets started? Yox has to go now more so than anybody else. He’s been here for a while but it’s time for Auburn and Coach Yox to part ways. Whatever is going on, it is obvious that our players are getting seriously injured on a consistent basis. So what if they get a tenth of a second faster on their forty, it doesn’t help much when they’re on the sideline with their legs torn to shreds. I know a lot of people like him, but Auburn needs a better strength and conditioning coach most of all.
Gus, because of what he did the first two years in my mind deserves the fourth year that you want to give to Roof. I am not for the continuity train I think everybody knows that. It might surprise you though, I actually don’t think Roof is the one that needs to go the most. For my money, the first guy who needs to be relieved of his position is Phillip Lolley because he is downright awful. Why he is back on the staff is a mystery to me and others I’m sure. After all, Tubberville demoted him! How does he then get promoted back with Chizik?!? What the hell?!? Next up, it’s someone other than Red Roof yet again (I know you must be shocked right now) I honestly like the guy from everything I’ve read about him on a personal level, but Thigpen needs to get the boot almost as bad as Lolley. The secondary technique is terrible and has been for three years. Since Thigpen has gotten there, how many times have our corners and safeties been in position? I’m not even getting on my rant about not looking for the ball. When you see receivers getting the deep ball every game against Auburn for multiple seasons, it’s time for a change. The guy is a very good recruiter, but his job with the secondary is atrocious at best. Even last year, our secondary was a big weakness and everybody knew it.
Now as far as Roof goes, I actually do not think he’s a terrible coach. I have recanted my belief about his capability as a coach already. That said, I’ve always felt he doesn’t fit on this staff and his style of defense directly clashes with that of Chizik’s. Gene wants the four guys rushing and the linebackers staying at home with the receivers or coming up to stop the run with mainly the Tampa 2. Roof runs just about the exact opposite of Chizik ran during his stints as a defensive coordinator. I do not know who is to blame for the lack of good tackling skills we’ve seen for three years, but the technique needs a lot of work. Hell, the defense could be a lot better if it just got a single to coach tackling and nothing else. I think Roof will do well when he is allowed to attack the way he wants to attack. Gene just doesn’t like the constant attack mode and he will stubbornly stay Tampa 2.
Whether Auburn keeps Roof or Malzahn, I know one thing for sure. I don’t know if the rumors are true, but either way, Chizik must allow his coordinators to do their jobs. He has to get out of the way and let those guys do what they were hired to do. That goes for either Roof or Gus Malzahn. Personally, I think Roof is gone. I’m not sure that’s going to solve anything either to be honest with you. Lolley and Thigpen have had their shot and they do need to take their services elsewhere. I’m a little skiddish now of Jeff Grimes to be completely honest and I think he should be put on notice along with Trooper Taylor. Boulware, Chizik, and Curtis Luper are about the only guys I see that shouldn’t have to produce next year and keep their jobs. Lolley and Thigpen are two that I think have to go along with Yox. If Chizik let’s Roof coach his own defense next year, I say keep Roof. Doesn’t that shock all of you?
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Reading over my long, long comment...
I wanted to make it clear on some things. I am not saying that any coach should just get a green light and not compete ever. I am simply saying that Luper, now Boulware, and Chizik deserve a season to not be on the hot-seat. I love Trooper Taylor, but let’s face it, the receivers aren’t really getting any solid production. I would like to see better technique with the defensive line next year, too. I’m not saying fire Pelton this year, that would be way too hasty. However, no matter how new somebody is, they can instill proper technique for their respective unit and I’d love to see both the offense and defense use better technique. So, I guess what I’m saying, TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE TECHNIQUE!!!!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
You bring up some excellent points!!
For the record, this post was not necessary Sparkey-inspired, BUT adding Ron Cooper to the poll, most certainly was.
I don’t mind have an open discussion about what went wrong this season. Although I would argue that a team that went 7-5 after supposedly having less talent than Ole Miss, is not the worse season in the world. Seriously. What I don’t like is for the Defense to be blamed for lack of offensive production. If we are lucky both coordinators stay, but my guess is the Gus bus is about to leave town……..I agree with you that the hybrid Roof/Chizik defensive scheme doesn’t work now. Either they need to recruit the skill players to make it happen or they need to adopt one or the other to work with the personnel that they have on hand (I’m for the latter).

Honestly, I think Gus is staying.
Now that there was another abysmal performance from his offense, nobody is going to hire him. Who knows, maybe Chizik will fire him. I hope he doesn’t do that, though. In 2009 and 2010 this team did some pretty ridiculous crazy stuff under Gus Malzahn.
Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but Chizik and Roof just don’t seem to like each other. If Roof does leave, I hope Chizik gets two really important factors in the next defensive coordinator. Firstly, I hope he hires somebody that runs his same style of defense so that the ineffective hybrid doesn’t rear it’s head again next year. And Secondly, I hope he gets a guy that’s a fanatic about good technique. If we can get some technique going with another set of recruits coming in, Auburn will be getting off the field a lot more in third down and long situations.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Talent wise...
I think Auburn had way more talent Ole Miss did this season. Is this the worst season in the world? No, not by any stretch. 2008 is still a fresh reminder of what really bad is and then go to Terry Bowden’s last year where he quit during the season. I think AU went 3-8 that year. That was about the worst season in the world. No, it was not the worst season. But, with the talent that Auburn has right now on both sides of the ball, more production from both units is certainly expected.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Bama averages 433 yds/gm
So Auburn held them below their average…
I think it’s fairly likely that teams usually exceed their average offensive numbers for Auburn on the season, so while the defense played well in this game, I’m not sure that it necessarily means that the defense is improving.

I was happy that Bama didn't hang 600 yards on us.
I don’t know if I characterized it as an ‘improvement’, but it was decent play given the lack of offensive production…..

Not really...
They both were terrible. Bama also had one of the two best defenses in the nation and it showed. I would love to see how our defense would hold up against one of the top offenses in the country. Fortunately, the high powered offenses were not in the SEC outside of Arkansas and they destroyed us as well. Honestly, I don’t think we could beat Houston. I think they would blow Auburn right out of the building. Let Auburn play Houston and then compare the defense with the offense’s production. Alabama doesn’t have anywhere close to a great offense. The fact that they could have put more points on the board says a lot. I’m not saying the offense did well. I’m just saying that comparing the offense to the defense’s production against Alabama is a bit unfair. I mean, Samford also had a 90 yard drive where they drove it right down our throats. The defense cannot be excused.
