Saban Plays It Safe, Soft In Tide Loss. Is that what you pay $4 Million/year for?
It was the game of the Century!! #1 vs, #2! 100,000+ screaming Turds rooting you on!! And THIS is what you give them? A FG loss in overtime? Don't get me wrong, it was a great game, but I kept saying to myself, LSU is going to win the game because Bama isn't going to win it. By that I mean, Alabama did NOTHING to WIN this game. Yes, they played better on both sides of the ball than LSU for 55 minutes last night, but, as is usually the case in close games, coaching and special teams make the difference.
Alabama had several chances to put points on the board, but couldn't due to missed field goals, and just when Trent Richardson seemed to find his groove again in the 4th Qtr., they blew another scoring chance by having a WR make a throw off his back foot that would be intercepted.
Whenever I see a team waste chances to score and play to go to overtime or extra innings, I take that as a sign of weakeness, a lack of confidence in their ability to finish, a hope that their opponent will somehow give them the game. That strategy almost never pays off, because when you show no confidence to win......HOW CAN YOU WIN???!!!
In his actions last night, Saban made all the wrong decsisions, and when it was time to be a champion, he showed absolutely no confidence in his team to win. Alabma was supposed to be the best team in the country. Big. Bad. Unbeatable.... And in front of their home crowd. This game was the defacto national championship....winner goes on to play the sacrificial lamb that makes the other half of the BCS title game. If I'm coaching, I'm going down swinging, doing my best to win....not hoping that the other team will give me the game.
But that is exactly what Saban did, he played too conservative, except at the wrong time. Besides the ill advised WR pass by Maze, Saban sealed the fate of the team by asking AJ McCarron to get meaningful yardage on third and 15 in OT when he hadn't asked him to do anything meaningfull all game. THATS THE TIME YOU DECIDE TO THROW DOWNFIELD??? REALLY??
Instead of finding a receiver or even trying to pass, McCarron does exactly what you would expect someone to do when you show no confidence in him.....he failed. McCarron took the sack that put the TIde out of a reasonable field goal distance. Why this was dumb, is that LSU is WILLING to give you three points, but not a first down. Saban should have gone back to Richardson, his only real weapon, to get them closer. If he picks up 5 yards, its a 42 yard field goal and much more makeable. The chances that McCarron would make a 15 yard completion at that point were negligible at best, but dwelling on the OT underscores that they shouldn't have even been there in the 1st place.
Even though their kickers missed three field goals in regulation, the Tide had the ball at the 22 yard line with :52 seconds to play and did nothing to try to get themselves in position to kick a winning filed goal. When he didn't even use a TO to mount an offensive, I knew that the Tide would lose. He had told his offense, and especialy AJ McCarron that they weren't good enough to win the game.... and they proved that correct in the end.
I went over to RBR this morning to see how bad Saban was being savaged for giving this one away.....
... and to my amazement, their was not a single comment on how Saban had lost his nerve and blinked under pressure. Unless something unbelievable happens, they lost their chance at a National Title, and nobody even was placing blame where it belonged......Saban.
Instead, the sentiment is the better team lost, the barn is gonna get it, the kickers suck, etc, etc, etc. None of which pointed out the fact that with two weeks to prepare, Saban's plan evidently was to play conservative on offense and wait for the defense to win the game for them. Uh, DUH?? Who didn't know that?
Both teams obviously gameplanned for a defensive war, and thats what it was, but the Tide wasn't able to do anything with the gifts that Lee gave them. If Richardson couldn't win the game for them, then Saban wasn't interested in seeing if McCarron could. Knowing that was the case and that Miles would scheme his defense for that, it is very surprising that Saban had no tricks up his sleeve that would not evoke the desperation that Maze's heave did. That play gave LSU the momentum for the remainder of the game.
The Tide attack was so predictable from that point on that the Tigers blitzed with abandon and rendered even Richardson ineffective. It was so obvious, I thought Tide fan would be furious at Saban's playcalling.....and yet they saved their ire for McIlwein, as if he was the guy callling the shots at that point.
Tide fan is clearly delusional at this point. Miles has beaten Saban two years in row in pivotal SEC battles, and Chizik beat him after spotting him 24 points. Saban is obviously not the coach people think he is. He is one of the best in the business and a great recruiter, but it is becoming increasingly clear, unless he has an overriding edge in talent, he isn't a lock to come away the victor.
With one of the best defenses in college football, all he has to do is get minimal production from the passing game to make his superstar Richardson, that much more effective. But somehow he manages to make his passing game a non-factor and his team one-dimensional when it matters the most.
As the head coach, he alone is handicapping his own team. To think that you spend all that time in preperation in the offseason, and prior every game, to essentially roll over during crunch time is absolutely amazing. This is alpha omega of college football? LSU was his first, and maybe only, real test of the season for the talent of the Tide, and not only did they fail, Saban conceded. I'm surprised that Tide fan doesn't expect more....for $4+ Mill, I know I would.

I generally don't want to be too critical..
…..of a team we haven’t played yet, but it’s hard to disagree with that assessment. Saban isn’t the first coach to get tight in big games when he’s favored.
…..I had much the same complaint about later-era Tuberville. He’d take those knees and burn the last minute or two of the half, not even trying to score. It would drive me crazy!
......Drowning in cool elixir.
Defensively both teams played a tight game.
But I agree, I didn’t understand why they didn’t pass to Richardson MORE. That move scares the living $%^& out me for the Iron Bowl……I’m sure there’s some sort of Moral MNC that was claimed Sat night….

Saban horribly mismanaged the game.
But Bama’s OC is awful as well.
LSU didn’t play mistake free either, we had many missed opportunities and defensive breakdowns. The difference was that Miles and his teams are mentally tough. Saban cracks.
Miles castrated Saban in Tiger Stadium last year. His balls have been sitting on Miles’ desk in a jar for a year while a new orleans voodoo queen was “prepping” Saban for Nov 5th, 2011. I can’t wait for Finebaum’s show tomorrow.
Geaux Tigers.

Nasty.
…But true. You’ve got a “long-range” kicker, who’s not good enough to kick the short ones? And the best D in the nation? Punt when it’s 35 yards or more. Bama goofed, there.
…..Best Bama strategy was to get it to Richardson in space. They tried. The wheel route in OT was brilliant, and at worst should have set ‘em up first and goal. They missed it. LSU won. That’s it. Over. They have the commanding lead in the SEC West, and Bama doesn’t. Deal, folks. This time of year, ten teams every year deal with the fact that they aren’t wining the league. Play on.

I see what you re saying
And ill skip the obligatory “har har our rival is obsessed with us!” crap we all throw at each other
To me it isn’t crazy to still fully support your coach and to be satisfied in our current position. It was a game of inches and we came up one inch short. A three point loss to the number one team in the nation. Not thirty five points, a field in overtime.
The formula might not seem so hot the day after a tough loss but we still have a shot our fourth ten win season in a row, our fourth finishing with a top ten ranking in a row, and a great shot at a third BCS bowl in four years.
It’s still a great position to be in so all the fans and rival fans calling into question a coach that has produced these numbers is a little beyond extreme.

Lucid, reasoned response....I wasn't expecting that.
I’ll admit I was trying to poke Bama fan with a stick. Saban is one of the best in the business, no doubt and built th….I guess thats why I was shocked by the strategy and that he didn’t attempt to win the game in regulation. If I’m Bama fan I’m po’d, that is how that game went down. Finishing a close second grates on me worse than being out of the running. I applaud you for taking the loss in stride….and you’ll likely go to a BCS game anyway.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
the phone was off right after the game
and I wasn’t able to get to a computer until I got home the next morning
so that helped prevent my own personal meltdown thread haha

also if you're a Bama or Auburn fan living in Birmingham
your first action after a loss is to always turn off the phone because we all know fans from the other side and the text messages come pouring in hahaha

I actually broke mine...
Because AT&T service was so shitty in T-Town after the game, I was hammered, and I couldn’t get in touch with a friend (who come to find out was arrested for pissing in plain view behind The Red Shed). I went to bail him out and it was as if the Alabama and LSU fans moved the party to the Tuscaloosa County Jailhouse.

I do think
Saban is worth every penny. We ’ re much better off than before. He ’s not perfect. Neither was the Bear. I remember the 1972 Iron Bowl—well, from books and film—as well as the 1980 loss to MSU and the Bear never beating Texas while at Bama nor ever beating Notre Dame, even at Legion Field, getting shutout 7-0. And he did have a way of getting conservative when leading, always frustrating my father.
I got really angry when Pat Dye settled for a tie against Syracuse, hoping you ’d win. Michigan beat us by having the guts not to settle for a tie when there was no OT. Bobby Bowden also settled for a tie in 1994 against Florida. Do you question the worth of these 2 coaches to their respective programs?
So Saban is not perfect, he has taken responsibility, and needs to do self-evaluation. And yes, yesterday’s offensive playcalling, special teams, last minutes in regulation time, and OT possession stunk. God I long for the days of Van Tiffin (remember him?), Philip Doyle, and Michael Proctor.
Anyway, good luck against the Bulldogs and in the Iron Bowl.

More luciditity!! Epic fail on my part!! LOL
Saban has definitely got Bama back to the national prominence of the Bryant years and I’m sure they will be competiing for the SEC title every year while he’s there. Nobody can argue that the guy has built one of the best programs in the country. I’m not jealous, because I think we are there ourselves, but I do envy the defensive talent that comes and goes there.
I don’t think anyone will ever push Saban out, but it is funny that there seems to be EXTREME reluctance to criticize the guy in anyway…..almost like you’re afraid he’ll bolt if someone dared to speak ill of him. Just a perception on my part. And I guess if we had a coach like him, I’d feel the same way.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Thanks for this....
Anyway, good luck against the Bulldogs and in the Iron Bowl.
I’ll say this about Saban, and then, leave it alone. Bob Stoops he’s not, and that’s a good thing.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
That depends on where you are going to get your information.
Because I can tell you my family (which all are bama fans) are complaining. They cite the very reasons you did. They aren’t happy. And while no one is going to sit and throw crap at Saban with a record like he has…. he alone lost this game.
For crying out loud… you had Trent Richardson. You had Eddie Lacey. In RBs alone you could have pounded the ball all night long. And bama would have won. Yet… bama wanted to play finess? And then wanted to put it on your FG kicker??
By the way: is that kid a scholly winner? Or is he a walk on?
I think the 4th QTR throw by Maze that was intercepted at the goal line… say it all! LSU is a bunch of brawlers. Especially on defense!!
Rule #1: Know your enemy.
The reason I think they went away from the running game? Trent was tired of getting hammered. So was Eddie… And wasn’t Trent supposed to be the Heisman Trophy winner… in all but name alone? What, they wanted to prove that theQB was all that they said he was….? LOL.
Rule #2: Know yourself.
For all the hype… it reminded me of the 1988 AU vs LSU game. I think we lost 7-6.
Don’t get me wrong bama fans – you got a great defense. But your offense is way over-rated. And so is your coaching staff. They can put together a great program that competes regularly… but that in itself doesn’t mean you can win championships every year. I think this seals that deal in that regard.

i loved watching LSU / bama...
LSU came to play and didn’t let the atmosphere get bigger than them. they were in the game from the opening kick off.
i think saban did make some very poor calls throughout the game…starting with the decision to take the ball in the beginning of the game.
i would love to hear his explanation on so many little decisions after that.
bottom line take-a-ways for me is this:
1. neither lee or mccarron looked like they’re capable of handling a game of that significance- turnovers, turnovers… BIG in this game and when the big play pass was there mccarron and lee fell short. lets be honest, for the #1 and #2 teams in the nation… this was crap QB play.
2. bama can’t win even with the best RB and best WR in the game= there should be legit offensive worries from tide fans.
3. it appeared that LSU entered this game more battle tested… in contrast to Saban, I thought Miles made adjustments much more fluidly throughout the course of the game…and the LSU Defensive players made more of an impact than bama’s in the 2nd half. i attribute this mostly to the matchup of LSU Dline against the bama Oline. i’m still convinced it is impossible to have enough speed on D in the SEC. LSU didn’t let Richardson run away with the game…and when bama was faced with that scenario.. the offense wasn’t dynamic enough to manage.
4. program personality: i talk about this all the time. what about the demeanor of the sidelines during this game?… your thoughts? didn’t it look as if Miles and LSU were having much more fun? “conservative” used to describe bama is entirely appropriate…i love smash mouth, but i hate “conservative”. i thought bama did get caught too conservative…coverage of these 2 teams arriving at bryant denny … halftime chats with head coaches… clearly bama embraces the business approach personality stamp… but i would argue that a majority of great football happens outside the Xs and Os… it is a game of equal part strategy/execution and player creativity/ heart/ effort. you should not be out efforted in your own house…and i think bama was on Sat. night. i think Miles attitude (all week) was as much a part of their W on saturday as anything.
5. the ball was intercepted bama. your kickers missed field goals bama. your QB didn’t make plays bama. bama… you’re not the best in the conference or the nation. shelf the arrogance, accept the loss, move on.
can’t wait to see that kicker try one in jordan-hare… and oh… don’t come to Auburn and plan on running Richardson all day…
if that is all your offense offers… i will already climb out on a limb and predict another 3 point bama loss… 3-0 Auburn.
war eagle.
you do it and you wipe it up.
Miles' teams are mentally tough, never quit and play loose
I think that was the difference.

No doubt.
Now maybe Miles can start getting the respect he deserves as one of the best coaches in the country. As much as I hate losing to him, I can’t help but like and respect him.
Congrats to you guys. That was one of the better non-Auburn games I have seen in a long time (yes, my glasses are orange and blue).

Thanks.
I’m more pumped about Miles winning than I am about what our team just accomplished.
If there was anyone left in the State of LA who still had Saban penis envy before the game, they sure don’t anymore.

i agree... LSU does play loose. there is a reason why LSU athleticism stands out
… they are coached up through the week…and then the staff lets them get out and PLAY the GAME.
i think everybody can relate to opening up and PLAYING a GAME. if you’re thinking too much… you’re not PLAYING.
that was precisely the difference in my estimation.
you do it and you wipe it up.
That interception at the goal line is one for the record books...
I swear that should have been a stand up TD… but the safety closed so fast… and the ball lofted so high and slow… the rest is history.
WDE
FANTASTIC PLAY... i agree with bama fans who are upset with that play call. seeing bama try to execute a play like that was just damn weird.
it was only fitting that it ended in an interception and the biggest turning point in the game.
you could feel as the game wore on that the LSU safety Reed was one of the guys that bama was going to pick on… ironic that he was one of LSU heroes in the end.
the honey badger never got in the game. he was one of the few players on either side that seemed like he never got out of the locker room…
you do it and you wipe it up.
Well, he did clothesline Kirkpatrick...
other than that, he didn’t have much of an impact. The upsetting thing for me as a Bama fan is that we got away from giving Trent the ball as soon as we got to their 30. As my old coach used to say, “ride the horse that brought you there”.
2. bama can’t win even with the best RB and best WR in the game= there should be legit offensive worries from tide fans.
We fielded arguably the most talented offense in the country last year and shit the bed with it. Trust me when I say we’re long past worrying about offense at this point because ever since I’ve followed Alabama football (since the Gene Stallings era), I can almost predict every offensive play we’re going to run and your average ten year old knows more about the technical aspects of football than I do. Do you know what I would give to see a Gus Malzahn or Al Borges coach ONE game for Alabama? Just one…
Thank the football gods Nick Saban can at least field a dominant defense.

Say what you please...
But I’m the only ’Bama fan who has endlessly defended your offensive coordinator – even to your own people who turned on him this year. I would happily donate my young and sweet virgin ass to Jerry Sandusky if he could land Malzahn to Alabama in return.
F-U and ROLL TIDE ROLL!
This is so wrong
But still got an evil chuckle out of me.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Yeah, I should qualify that
It’s not to make light of the specific situation with Sandusky — rather, it brings to mind the image of a ’Bama fan sighing, dropping trou, and saying, “FIIIIIIIINE….as long as this gets us past Auburn AND LSU”.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
I think bama has a good oc. Does he get a little predictable and run some plays that seem to be drawn up in a sand lot at bad times? Yes, but so does Gus. I don’t understand why so many bama fans are calling for him to step down or be fired.
by Jumpn_JackFlash on Nov 8, 2011 3:58 PM CST up reply actions
correction, it was ruled an interception…
The rules clearly prove my case of a catch, but they are interpreted by me…so it’s not that black and white. The back judge made the call, and given what he could see, I understand why. I could argue all day but it’s not worth it…it was a good enough play to stand as an
INT and it reminds me of a point guard rejecting an ally-oop to your center all the way to half court and then wanting the foul cause there was contact.
