Paterno Should Go Now

Talk about a strange week of college football. As is typical these days, most of the headlines involve things happening away from the football field. We should all be accustomed to it by now. The Auburn-Georgia game has literally been pushed to page three of the sports section.

Here are my thoughts on some of the headlines. I'd love to hear what you think...

UPDATE: 10:00PM EST. Paterno and President Graham Spanier Out Immediately!

By now, we all have an opinion on the terrible tragedy at Penn State. What's important to remember is that Joe Paterno is not the victim. It makes me sick when I hear people concerned about the effect it will have on his legacy. That's his problem.

He should have thought of that before deciding not to call authorities upon hearing that a former employee was molesting a child in his athletic building. The idea that he allowed former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky to remain a part of the program and use athletic department facilities for years following the incident, tells me all I need to know about the 84 year-old coach.

I really don't care that Paterno has forever tarnished his reputation. I'm much more concerned about the children - who are now young adults - that must deal with this for the rest of their lives.

The idea that Penn State University is allowing Paterno to finish out the season and "retire" is criminal. He should pack his office and spend the rest of his days trying to make amends for not acting. He will forever be a phony in my book.

Neither Auburn nor Alabama should be smiling following last night's airing of the ESPN documentary, Roll Tide/War Eagle. It was hardly a Valentine to either program. The biggest joke of all was Paul Finebaum portraying himself as an amused outsider who just facilitates conversation. He's more responsible for riling up the idiots on both sides than anyone else.

Arguably, Alabama looked worst of all. Giving tree killer and all-around moron, Harvey Updyke so much airtime just made the Alabama program look really bad. And what about Gay Talese? I cringed for my Alabama friends when they interviewed that odd bird.

There wasn't a lot of new ground broken, but I assume the intent was more to give the nation a look inside the rivalry, which it did. One final thought: Takeo Spikes may be the most intimating dude I've ever seen in my life.

The talk is already heating up about Gus Malzahn and the open Ole Miss job. I would be shocked if he wasn't interviewed; but it's hardly a foregone conclusion that he's headed to Oxford.

Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has publicly expressed interest in the job. I know Leach is an acquired taste, but I happen to like him a lot. I've enjoyed listening to his daily radio program on Sirius/XM and just finished reading his new book.

I have no doubt he was railroaded by the Texas Tech administration. It would be fascinating to see how his offense would operate in the SEC.

The Ole Miss job is a tough one to get your hands around. Situated so close to Tennessee and Arkansas, not to mention Alabama, you would think they would have more success. All you hear about is the tailgating at The Grove. Yet once the game kicks off, the stadium is never full - no matter who the opponent.

If Eli Manning and David Cutcliffe were unable to sustain success, then I'm not sure anyone can. By Malzahn's way of thinking, it's got to be better than Vanderbilt.

Speaking of Texas Tech, at what point does former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville start feeling some heat in Lubbock? After starting 4-0, the Red Raiders have dropped four of its last five games, with the only win coming against top-ranked Oklahoma. Things don't get any easier on Saturday when they welcome second-ranked Oklahoma State.

As much as we enjoyed Alabama's loss to LSU last Saturday, I still believe the chances are better than average that Alabama finds its way back into the BCS Championship. Stanford sits a 3 ½ point favorite at home against Oregon this Saturday. A win and the Cardinal jumps Alabama. However, I like Oregon in the game.

Who really believes that Bob Stoops and Oklahoma will lose twice on the road this season? I just don't see them falling to Oklahoma State on December 3rd.  And who knows about Arkansas and LSU? Auburn could be the only one standing in Alabama's way to another BCS title appearance.

Here's a question for you? Should Georgia's Mark Richt lose to Auburn on Saturday and then to Georgia Tech in the season finale, does he keep his job? Remember, Georgia is a 13-point favorite at home against Auburn.

If Eli Manning and David Cutcliffe were unable to sustain success

When did these guys fail? Cutcliffe couldn’t find a QB the year after Eli left and was shown the door. That was the dumbest decision Ole MIsses has ever made.

Except for one season...

they sort of underachieved each year Manning was there.

by Jay Coulter on Nov 9, 2011 2:54 PM CST reply actions

I don't think they underachieved in the least....

you can’t expect a coach to overcome a lack of talent and a losing culture in so short of a time with one player….Eli was a very good college QB but not the kind of player that could do it all by himself.

Obviously the AU loss would make it harder...

but if UGA still backdoored into the SECCG, I think he can survive a loss to AU and GT

Yes, that is my son. Yes, that is a bottle of Crown.

I think Mahlzahn lands at Ohio St. or Penn St. (or someplace equivalent). I think he gets the Muschamp/Jimbo deal and takes over a top-tier program without having to waste a few years of his career at an Ole Miss / Maryland / Vanderbilt-type school.

Same with Kirby Smart, if UGA finishes 8-4 and misses the SECCG.

I don't know what to think about Paterno

And hear me out on this. I’m not trying to belittle what happened to those kids by any means. I just wonder if JoePa really knew what was going on, because I honestly believe that of the 120 FBS college football coaches, he would be the last to let a thing like that happen and knowingly not do anything about it. It is conceivable that he honestly didn’t have any reason to believe the allegations against Sandusky. Think about it from his point of view: someone comes up and tells you that one of your closest friends of numerous years is molesting little boys. Would you believe it? He did the right thing by passing on that information to the AD and President, and since they said that they were baseless claims; why would he have any reason to think it was anything other than an unfounded rumor? Now, I am in no way close to this case and am just conjecturing, but if this type of scenario played out… how much of the blame should he shoulder? If it comes out that he had reason to believe that something was going on despite the objections of his superiors then I’m with you in thinking that his legacy would deserve to be tarnished; I’m just not quite ready to lynch him yet until we hear everyone’s side of the story.

Of the 120 D-I coaches, I think Paterno would tbe the most likely

“to let a thing like that happen and knowingly not do anything about it”. Because Paterno is the only one who did exactly that.

meant to say that he seems like the last guy I would think would let that happen.

There's no way

that the graduate assistant told him what he witnessed in 2002 and Paterno didn’t ask for additional details if the guy was ambiguous in his description. Paterno had to know. There’s not only a legal obligation there to have rung the warning bell but a moral one.

This is bad. Not just for PSU but for CFB.

It's a sad situation no matter what the truth may be.......

and not to be an apologist for Paterno but without knowing the facts it’s hard to say that he should be gone or not.

Read between the lines, Todd.

We can reasonably infer what he knew by knowing some basic facts.

What would you do if someone came up to you at work to report something similar?

It’s such a no-brainer, that’s how we know.

With an allegation this strong I prefer not to read between the lines.....

I prefer to let the facts come out fully before I condemn someone of something so atrocious…..we are not talking about a recruiting incident or pay for play….we are talking about a felonious act of the worst kind and I don’t wish to convict someone based on popular opinion.

I have struggled hard with this all day....

I agree with Todd; I need to know more facts (and I probably never will), but I can see some scenarios….I think FlyAuburn has some valid points.

Everything about it sucks.

The facts are clear enough...

The grand jury testimony is damning and really stands alone. I myself do not need any further explanation from Paterno nor McQueary Jr or Sr. They are all morally represensable and unless they lied to the Grand Jury, it cannot be said they they did not have their hand in allowing Sandusky to terrorize children for another decade.

I love reading and posting on this site

about college football and arguing about things that really aren’t all that serious in the grand scheme of things. This is serious stuff, and I don’t have a clue. I really wish I hadn’t already posted above. I’ll say a prayer for the victims; somebody at the old “higher paygrade” will have to figure out the rest.

I never thought I'd see that headline in my life.

Pushed out, decided it was time to move on, something like that.
Paterno Fired, I can say that I am genuinely surprised, yet I think it needed to be done.

No one is all powerful, anyone else would have been fired sooner. To know what had happened, but to basically turn a blind eye? I don’t pity the man, it’s just a game, the well being of those kids is far more important than Penn State football or any game will ever be.

Never tell me the odds.

by DarthTiger on Nov 9, 2011 10:28 PM CST reply actions

Too late... Joe Pa is fired.

Let’s face it, Joe Pa has been screwed since he short sheeted this story back in 2002 when it was brought to his attention.

Folks… take a look around. The football landscape is DRASTICALLY being altered. Looking past the scandal at Penn State… are you catching the other scandals that are coming out? You can’t go to a sports outlet without seeing the negative headlines.

Did you catch that the NCAA just hired a police investigator to head up its investigation division??

Unbelievable.

Cat’s and dog’s…. living together. Mass hysteria!!!!

On a more serious note, I hope these families can get back some sembalance of reality when this guy get’s his justice. I have always read that the innocence is gone… it never comes back.

That said… I am afraid I disagree on the film ESPN did… I think it did a decent job depicting the rivalry. Am I smiling? No… but neither was I smiling before it came on! I think its good to get a good dose of reality to keep everyone grounded. We can all be Updyke if we allow ourselves to be….

And oh yeah… I don’t think bama gets an opportunity to play for the NC… I just don’t see how that get’s sold again to the Nation.

I would be shocked...

if Gus Malzahn took the Ole Miss job. I just don’t see that happening. There are so many things wrong with that program… that I don’t think even a young man has the energy to do it all much less a man who is set in already set in his ways like Malzahn.

Gene Chizik should be a warning for EVERY young coach out there: Be careful of where you go… think long and hard. Because that first job may be your last job.

Chizik was lucky.

Don’t you think even Muschamp… who like the rest of us had pretty much bought the Meyers hype at Florida… you simply can’ lose, is now scratching his head wondering why he took that job?? Be careful what you ask for… because you just might get it.

I do think Malzahn gets interviewed. And I think Kirby Smart gets interviewed. But I am not convinced that either of them will take the job. I look for a relative unknown to come in and take the job.

Stll, if I were the AD at the Ole Miss Rebels uh Black Bears… I would find the number to the head coach in Lubbock Texas. When Tommy aswered the phone the first question I would ask after the niceties were out of the way…would be “So Tommy, how cold does it get in Lubbock”…. and followed up with… "are you as miserable as you sound in the “big eleven” ??? Wanna come back to the SEC?

Meaning.... Tommy shouldn't...

Or Ole Miss shouldn’t….

Or both?

I am just saying it’s a known fact that Tommy T is not happy in the big twelve… because he has been banished to a relative outpost that has no signficance to College Football. This would be an excellent chance for him to get back into relevance again…

I don’t think it will ever be offered again to Tubbs, and I think there is still an awful lot of resentment at Ol Miss concerning his departure.

There were some that wanted Leach at AU...

I wasn’t among them.

Leach might do that… the irony would be thick… that’s for sure. And he might be just the kind of coach Ole Miss needs to get the program back in the black.

I personally think Craig James and ESPN were responsible to what happened to him at Texas Tech. The fact Tubs backfilled him…. shows how desperate Tuberville was after losing his job in Auburn.

Bet he wished Texas A&M had hired him now huh??
