Monday Musings: Bowl Practice Edition

Michael Dyer's absence from the Chick-Fil-A Bowl will make things even tougher when Auburn lines up against Virginia.

Auburn returns to the practice field today in preparation for its New Year's Eve matchup with Virginia. Something tells me more time will be spent on 2012 than the Cavaliers. Not since Auburn's last visit to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in 2007 have there been so many questions surrounding the team during bowl season.

It will be interesting to watch who gets the majority of snaps at quarterback. If I'm Gene Chizik, I give Kiehl Frazier the start. We know what Clint Moseley and Barrett Trotter can do; let's give Frazier the entire playbook and three weeks to prepare and let him sink or swim.

Trotter's performance at practice in the coming weeks will likely determine whether he returns next season. With his degree already in hand, it's doubtful he'll return as a backup.

Rumors have been floating around for several weeks about running back Michael Dyer. Most of them center on whether he'll be in orange and blue next season. Word that he's been suspended for the bowl game will only add to the talk.

I won't speculate here on the reason for his suspension, but I do hope the young man gets his act together. Auburn obviously needs him; but he also needs the program. His best days are still ahead and I'd hate to see him screw up his life by transferring.

As backup Tre Mason tweeted Saturday night, now is his time to shine. The same can be said for a lot of the young guys.

It appears offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn will return next season. After emerging as the hottest assistant coach in America a year ago, he's been little more than a second-tier candidate this season. That doesn't mean he won't be in the hunt at some of these smaller schools, but at $1.3 million a year at Auburn those jobs will likely be lateral moves.

There's no question some of the luster is off Malzahn. It's hard to argue that he earned his salary this season. For a guy that prides himself on innovation, his unit was as predictable as it gets in the SEC.

Malzahn's biggest failing has been his inability to develop a quarterback. All of that said, he's still one of the best in the game. I will be shocked if he doesn't rebound in a big way next season.

Speaking of coaching, I'm surprised that Alabama's Kirby Smart was not offered a head coaching job. With ESPN's love affair for all things Alabama, you would think schools would be lining up for a piece of Alabama royalty. I guess not.

What a year it has been for Georgia's Mark Richt. Entering the season as the coach most likely to be gone at year's end, Richt overcame an 0-2 start and now is negotiating a contract extension with Georgia. Reports over the weekend say that Texas A&M offered its vacant job to Richt. He politely declined. You can bet he will use that offer as leverage in his negotiations.

Here's a tip on winning your office pool this bowl season. Pick the teams that are excited to be going bowling. That will be Auburn's challenge against Virginia. The Cavaliers are headed to a bowl game for the first time since 2007. They overachieved this season and will be pumped up and ready to go.

Auburn will return to the spot where they won the SEC Championship a year earlier. They've lost their defensive coordinator and have no leader on offense. This game will be a huge challenge for Auburn. Mark my word.

Ted Roof was a polarizing figure from the day he arrived on campus. There's no question a change was needed at defensive coordinator, but that doesn't mean Roof was a bad coach. By the end of last season, Auburn was as good as any defense in America. I hope he has big success at Central Florida.

Looking to kill some time at work? Check out Saban on a Shelf. I have no idea who created it, but it's pretty funny stuff. There are some creative people in this world.

It was refreshing to see the Heisman voters in the southeast show some objectivity. Despite Alabama's Trent Richardson and LSU's Tyrann Mathieu being among the finalist, the voters in this part of the country still placed Baylor's Robert Griffin III ahead of those two in the balloting. Griffin was far and away the best player in 2011.

Specifics on Dyer?

Does anyone know what’s going on with this kid? I follow the team closely (like everyone else here) and have picked up the negative vibe on him all season, but have heard nothing substantive, until of course his suspension this week.

Has he flaunted team rules all season? Is it a general attitude problem? Anyone know?

How about our other running back prospects....

the guy who walked on from Alabama and the one who transferred from Florida. Are they eligible to play in the bowl game?

I need a cold shower and a copy of the Auburn Creed

Nope.

The Bowl Game (while not an NCAA event) is the end of one season, not the start of the next one. From my understanding they can be on the sidelines but not play.

WarDamnZach is right...

Bowl games are rewards for good seasons, and since they were not eligible for that season, they are not eligible for the Bowl game.
They can not dress out, but they can be on the sidelines.

I have been hearing some names at DC... anyone else heard these?

Ellis Johnson (looking very doubtful due to money)
Mark Stoops
Everett Withers
Joe Whitt Jr.
Charlie Harbison (new)
Tim Deruyter (new)

All of these guys I think would do a good job.

But I also heard that Chizik might go with Tommy Thigpen. I think this would be a mistake.

Whomever Chizik and Jacobs picks… they need to re-evaluate that staff and ensure that the DC feels like he has what he wants to be successful. Anything less and we are asking for another Tony Franklin event.

About Mike Dyer… I must say I am extremely disappointed. He has become the face of our program whether he likes it or not. I am not sure what is going on… but when this kind of thing happens it normally means something serious… drastic. I would expect he came up hot on a drug test but I have seen nothing to confirm this.

Let’s go Tre Mason… it’s time to NUT UP.

And I agree with whomever said it… I am tired of seeing Clint and Barrett run around like they are scared to death of getting hit. It’s time to give the ball to Frazier.

I will add:

Bob Fraser from Rutgers
Chuck Heater from Temple
Kevin Greene
Mark Mangino

Mangino?

He has experience on the defensive side of the ball?

I had heard...

Kevin Greene (* I enjoyed watching him in blue and orange back in the day – but I don’t know how he would be as a DC)

But I had not heard about Bob Fraser or Mark Mangino.

Speaking for myself… unless the person has a demeanor like Roof… I don’t want to see another HC as a DC.

Neither you nor I had any input on who was selected anyway.

But on past HCs: there simply isn’t that many Ted Roof’s around who can contain their egos from their past lives when they are working for someone else.

Could you show me one case where a former HC actually did something positive for a football team as a Coordinator?

I think Moseley should get the start

If he is hot and clicking leave him in, if he looks like he has in the last few games, let Frazier go the distance.
Without Dyer we could really use another running threat in the backfield. We all know you only need a calender to time Clints speed.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

But your right about his speed and a dual thereat QB really makes Malhzin’s O click.

I sincerely hope

we do not get Deruyter. That would be an absolute terrible fit. If nothing else, he runs a 3-4.

by Sparkey on Dec 12, 2011 10:12 AM CST reply actions

I didn't read the particulars on AU Sports...

but if that is the case… then he wouldn’t be a logical fit. Chizik and as a result, Auburn run a 4-3 TAMPA 2.

To go after a guy that is 3-4 would signify a ideology change and put our defense 2-4 years behind the power curve.

That wouldn’t be good.

If you are right… then count him off the list.

None of my guys-it just has serious legs so I figured I’d mention it. Hey, I’ve been pretty spot on with the stuff I’ve mentioned before now. I would not be surprised at all if this is a true story. Either way, I do think they at least got close whether or not they’re going to finalize a deal is another story. We’ve seen the formalities part end up being a problem like the fact that Barbee still has yet to sign a contract with Auburn. So, that shows just what kind of confusion can arise from coach hiring in the NCAA.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

You are correct a chunk of the time. Dyer is the most recent example. But why does it all have to be so dramatic? What are you going to call your weekly column, ‘Sparkey Lately’?

I just saw where Phillip Marshall confirmed that Stoops is a credible candidate, but no offer has been given yet. There are several in the running. Could be next week OR week after next, til we have a new DC. I’m channeling all of the patience that I can muster…..

Barrett?

Does anyone know what has happened with Trotter? Did he do something to piss off the coaches that flew under the radar? I find it a bit unbelievable that he hasn’t been put in once since he was pulled during the Florida game. I thought surely as we floundered against Alabama he’d get to play at least a few series, but nothing. Anyone know?

Start Frazier.

MOSELY and Trotter both have had their shot, and failed miserably. It’s time to see if Frazier really is the future, or if we need to scouring the JUCO ranks for a QB.

MOSELY and Trotter are done. Starting them makes no sense whatsoever. They’ve both had their chances and glee them. Try to think about the future for once, people. Stop looking at winning the bowl game. Who gives a crap??? Take the money and use it as the opening of spring ball.

We have a defense Acid?

I was unaware that Auburn had any kind of defense at all for the last three years unless it was 2010 and it was a run play. I’m not sure Auburn has had a secondary at all since 2008. I think we just have four orange cones than do nothing but look the wrong way, never get their hands up or anywhere close to the ball, and they never come to help against the run unless they are sure to miss miss their tackles! Yep, that’s Auburn’s secondary. Hell, why don’t we just rush eleven guys at the quarterback every down? We aren’t going to stop the short bubble screen, the mid range pass, or the deep bomb anyway we never do. Therefore, why not just bring the house each and every time. I mean, that Cheetah lineup of Auburn’s worked so well to get pressure on the quarterback. The opposing qb didn’t have enough time to get seconds at the dinner table when they brought out the cheetah. Nah, the qb’s like Tyler Wilson only had time to eat one sandwich or two but not three or four. Is it obvious I didn’t like our defense for three years and especially this year?

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

He’s nearly Catholic in his pessimism and dour outlook.

The problem is, he usually says exactly what I’m thinking (but won’t say because I don’t like bagging on players or coaches). That means there are times when I’m feeling okay about things (like as of this week, about next season), and his outlook acts as a bellwether or forecast for what’s REALLY coming up.
