Move Makes Sense for Malzahn

When news broke late last night that Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn had accepted the head coaching job at Arkansas State, the first thought that popped into people's mind was why?

Are things so bad at Auburn that Malzahn's willing to take a pay cut of more than 40 percent? Is there a rift between he and head coach Gene Chizik? Does Malzahn see the Auburn offense as a lost cause for the foreseeable future?

If you take the emotion out of it, the move makes more sense that it appears on the surface. Like playing the stock market, you want to buy low and sell high.

No one's stock was higher a year ago than the Auburn offensive coordinator. On the flip side, Malzahn has seen his value drop this season more than any other high profile assistant in the country.

If you hold that piece of stock at $80, you better be ready to let it go once it hits the $60 mark. Last night Gus Malzahn sold.

The upside for him is that he desperately wants to be a head coach. According to several reports, he was literally hours away from being offered the Kansas job when Charlie Weis emerged and practically stole the job from under Malzahn.

He was thought to be the leading candidate at North Carolina for more than a month when things suddenly went south. It didn't take a Philadelphia lawyer to tell Malzahn that his lack of success on the field this year and a chatty wife had greatly diminished his value to other programs.

Much is being made today about the significant pay cut he's taking to leave Auburn. Reports say Malzahn will earn about $750,000 annually; that's quite a drop from the $1.3 million he currently makes as offensive coordinator.

What if his offense continued to struggle next season? Without a proven quarterback and the possible loss of All-SEC running back Michael Dyer, the odds were favorable that he'd have another lackluster year.

Then what would he be worth?

In the end, Malzahn saw the Arkansas State job as a chance to be the big boss and return home to where he's most comfortable. More than anything else, he wants to be a head coach. Another bad season at Auburn and that opportunity would likely be gone forever.

From an Auburn standpoint, things couldn't be much worse. Suddenly the defending national champions have lost their top two lieutenants. At a critical time in the recruiting process, Chizik must act quickly and correctly.

Talk of who will be the next defensive coordinator now becomes secondary. Auburn needs a new offensive leader now. Chizik, along with everyone else saw this day coming. You can bet he's making calls this morning.

Despite these setbacks, the sky is not falling at Auburn. Gene Chizik built this staff three years ago into champions. He'll do it again. Here's a word of advice: Ignore morons like Paul Finebaum and others who will scream from the hilltops today that the Auburn program is in turmoil.

There's no question Auburn hit a significant pothole; but remember, at no time in its history has the program had as much young talent on campus as it does today. The future is still bright.

This too shall pass.

Gus Malzahn took a pay cut, but his dream is about to be fulfilled despite the obstacles of this season. Besides that, if you win in Jonesboro, you can parlay that into bigger money at a bigger school. A proven head coach is worth more than a proven assistant.

I agree.

When I originally read Jay’s headline I thought he was smoking something but it’s starting to make a lot of sense.

He’s got a great reputation in the state of Arkansas. He’s walking into a team that is going bowling and plays in a very winnable league. The head coach of ASU just got a job at an SEC school. He can learn how to be a coach at this level without his Les Miles clock mismanagement debacles being the lead-in on sportscenter… And as was said below, maybe money isn’t everything.

What can you buy with 1.3 mil/year that you can’t with 800k?

I didn't see why it was a big deal, when you consider

the second-most important currency.

Wins.

Look at Arkansas State’s record this year. Then, consider that Hugh Freeze was obviously doing all right on the recruiting trail, relative to the size of the program. Then consider that the winning is going to help sustain that. Throw in Malzahn’s state ties, and that end is sewed up.

As far as the coaching? Taking Sun Belt-caliber defenses by storm with innovative offense will be about as difficult as getting me to argue with a Georgia fan. Poach a decent hire for defense and special teams, and you’re underway.

Pull off two — tops, three — seasons of eight or more wins, toss in a couple of bowl victories (keeping in mind that the Sun Belt tie-ins aren’t that killer), and for Malzahn, you’re back to where you were last year — ALMOST. You write off 2011 as a hiccup (“did you SEE what I had to work with? freshmen as far as the eye could see…”), and some high-profile program will take a chance.

As to whether or not that works out…well, I guess we’ll see. Still, if you think success at a mid-major can’t position you well for a decent position, just ask Al Golden (not saying that Miami’s situation is good, but the position is a good one if you can win).

One part I left out while hammering through that...

…was addressing the “then WHY pass up Vandy and Maryland last year?” question.

It goes back to the issue of wins, and like it or not, ten wins at Arkansas State plays a lot better than seven at Vandy. The weighting is definitely skewed, but it’s the game we follow.

I’m definitely not discounting external pressures, though….it’s just that whole “not saying anything if you don’t have anything nice to say” bit. And believe me, watching that video — regardless of context or lack thereof — certainly puts that on the table in a hurry. Oy.

I can see the job being less of a dead end than it appears on the surface......

but in the coaching world 7 wins and a bowl trip for a Vandy team is easily as or more impressive than 10 wins at a Sunbelt school……I think Malzahn would have jumped at Vandy had they offered this season had he had a choice between Vandy and Arky State. If he were willing to go to Kansas he wanted out for what ever reason.

Good read to start my morning, Jay.

I’m not dismayed in the least. I am anxious to see what direction we take. Watching the Cam Newton Show was unbelievable, but I often wondered if it took a special player for that kind of offense to flourish in the SEC. And remember, even with that once in a lifetime tallent, we just barely slipped by some of those teams by the skin of our teeth. I like the idea of going back to a more pro-style offense, but I suppose we need someone whose offensive philosophy jells with the recruits we have brought in over the last few years.

I first signed up for this blog back when we fired Tubby. I wouldnt be supprised to see some new subscribers weighing in as the search continues for coordinators.

Lets cut to the chase here

I agree with everything you said but I think you and everyone else is giving too small a role to his “chatty wife”. Auburn is a conservative family school and you don’t wave family laundry in public. Her rant was the single biggest reason Gus is gone. My wife, who happens to be a Trustee at another University in the State of Alabama and knows how this stuff works, said right away that she bet the president got more than one phone call from trustees after that segment aired. Well folks, s**t rolls downhill. Trustees calls Prez, Prez calls AD, AD calls head coach. Head coach tells OC to start looking.

While our offense was not very good this year, if you believe that this move was a “choice” you are crazy. Gus was asked to leave as soon as he could secure employment elsewhere.

I am a member of the AU Family and am happy.

All that being said I am happy for Gus and Auburn, I think both will be better off.

You’re absolutely correct! The conduct was A) unprofessional, B) Stupid,

Kristi Malzhan has one point in which I would agree; the Auburn-Bama rivalry has become a circus. She is correct and both programs better strive for a more respectful relationship in the near future. We can’t afford the reputation literally.

Message to wife: you learned a $600K lesson. I hope you don’t make the same mistake there at ARK STATE or you might want to get your old job back at KFC.

But my question again… now that the people that got the program back on the right track are gone… who will replace them?

Stoops would be a good start.

Next question is who fill the OC role?

How do we finish out our recruiting class??

Interesting take.

If I understand you correctly, this move makes sense because (1) Malzahn wants to be back in Arkansas and (2) he wants to be a head coach. That makes sense, as there aren’t many head coaching jobs in Arkansas, so he would have grabbed this one as it came up.

But he paid pretty dearly for it. He is giving up $500,000 this year alone, and locking himself in a lower salary for a while. Using your buy low/sell high analogy, we’re not talking about the difference between $60 and $80. His stock at Auburn was at $13 and he turned down an offer for $30. Now, he sold at $8. Or if we assume that his Auburn salary is 80, he sold for less than $50.

The way I see it, a move this drastic can only be explained by one or more of these things: (1) he really really wants to be a head coach in Arkansas; (2) he was told to leave; (3) he really wanted out at Auburn. I don’t really buy the stepping stone argument, because I have a hard time believing that a head coaching job at Arkansas State is a better stepping stone than being Auburn’s OC.

He was told to "pursue other avenues of employment"

Gus may have been “frustrated” at Auburn but I doubt he was half-a-million frustrated.

Kristi Malzahn and his stubborness regrading his scheme I think led to him being asked tofind employment elsewhere. The mere fact he was going for the Arky State job speaks volumes.
I know the ego says “I want to be an HC” but the ego also says “I’m taking that 1.3 mill, turning the team into a winner again and getting the HC job at Kentucky or Louiville or somplace like that !”
Arky State was a fall back and a crutch to boot. He’ll do fine there but he’s going to have to put on a show to get back to where he was.

It's not always about the money

For a guy who was coaching high school ball not long ago he already has more than he knows what to do with. He doesn’t strike me as a guy who had to have all the glamor gadgets associated with big money, but I don’t know him personally and could be wrong. This is a great opportunity for him. Go home where he’s comfy and likely has family. He should still have relationships with lots of coaches in the area for recruiting purposes. He can quietly bide his time and do the best he can and parlay that into whatever comes his way in the future…like when Petrino eventually leaves Arky. sure things could go south to the point that no one wants him, but I think he will do well in the low pressure situation. That 3 mil at Vandy would’ve been nice, but at what cost? There are guys like Charlie Weis that take the money and run and there are others who actually want to be successful and find their own way. Good luck Gus and War Eagle.

It's a better move than Ted Roof's

but not by much. It’s time for Chizik to get his stuff in order. We knew we wouldn’t be happy this year. But if we can bring in a good, strong coordinator at both OC and DC we have a chance to do well next year. Our secondary HAS to improve. Our passing game HAS to improve. And our offensive line HAS to improve. Otherwise we’re going to be hanging out with MSST for a while.

by SEC Supremacist on Dec 14, 2011 9:27 AM CST reply actions

Gus has been kicking himself all year

for not taking the Vandy job and money and I do belief it affected his work. It just seemed apparent that his head wasn’t into it, hence the big dropoff in offensive output. Yes, some of that can be explained away with a young line and other on the field issues, but in the end, it wasn’t the same old Gus

There could also be a political component in play after the Kristi Malzahn interview went viral. I believe like others have suggested that Jacobs could have told Gus it was time to move on immediately and Malzahn was under pressure to find a new home quickly. The only hole in that theory is that we should have heard stories of Chizik shopping for a new OC, but he may have decided to wait until the ink was dry on Malzahn’s new contract before doing that.

Shreveport isn't so bad this time of year...

by War Eagle Atlanta on Dec 14, 2011 9:31 AM CST reply actions

The way Chizik has handled things

It looks like he has had discussions in house with both Roof and Malzahn about their futures and that they needed to find somewhere else to go, and that he didn’t want to “fire” them. Doing things above board like that would eliminate the possibility of him “looking” for replacements. Besides its professional courtesy….on both sides. Everyone knows that Malzahn was eventually going to leave for the right opportunity. The fact that he left for Arky State means he probably NEEDED to take that job.

Everybody wins in this scenario and gets to go in the direction they want their program/career to go . Gene gets to prove its HIS team bring in guys that are in line with his philosophy and Gus gets his own team. Roof gets to move on without the stigma of being “future endeavored”.
Win Win for everybody. I really think this will be good for us long term.

My only problem Col...

is this: Malzahn was the lynch pin of Chizik’s tenure. With that hire he telegraphed that AU was continuing with the spread using a proven entity.

Now Malzahn is gone.

There was never a doubt that AUBURN was Gene Chizik’s program… but I get what your saying. Still, this appears to be a page out of the Tommy Tuberville CEO management handbook. The question is now… who does he get to replace??

That is ALL that I care about.

Because if he chooses poorly… you can write Chizik off. He won’t last the year. The haters would have called it right.

Of course he needs to choose correctly

Although he will get AT LEAST two more years regardless of who he hires unless its Tony Franklin.

I’m not really understanding your angst over these developments. I know you hated Roof….and he’s gone. And whether he left of his own volition or not, it was clear that he wasn’t going to be at Auburn next year. I personally think Chizik told him the way it was going to be and let him get a job before he had to let him go. But if Roof chose to leave, who was going to be upset?

Malzahn? Yes he was the sexy part of the staff that Chizik put together when everyone was freaking out about hiring a 5-19 coach, but it was clear he was looking to cash in on his “Genius” status before everybody figured him out. Unluckily for him he cashed in a year late. I’m still not sure why everybody can’t seperate last year from this year and ask why he isn’t responsible for the offense getting so bad so quick. If he wants to blame Chizik, thats fine, Chizik thought he could handle the responsibility of running a successful offense while helping the defense stay off the field. Chizik was apparently wrong…..so this is the OC everybody is lamenting losing? Can’t adjust? Can’t change to help the team?? Vaya con dios my friend. I am sure we can do better, and Arky State is betting that Gus can as well.
And also, how come Gus wasn’t interviewing at aTm or Arizona State, he didn’t want to throw his name in the hat there before taking the Arky State job? Or was he afraid that if he didn’t get this….he might get nada.
Enjoy Jonesboro Kristi!!

by Col.Angus on Dec 14, 2011 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

My angst is over what this implies....

I want my program to succeed. I want to be on equal footing with anyone else in the SEC. And if that is asking too much… after a NC I beg to differ.

For the record… I didn’t hate Roof. I actually liked him. I couldn’t tell who was calling the shots on defense… yet I knew the issues that were with the defense and the lack of depth in personnel. I could tell the season was wearing on him. I even noted when he changed his professional demeanor and stopped wearing a coat and tie to post game interviews and his personal mannerisms. To me, it was a marked difference. Like a switch was flipped.

I even said that AU could keep both coordinators but obvious changes were going to have to be made. They could lose them both as well… and AU would survive… but I was assuming that AU would replace them with equal or better talent. That is the point to my angst…. duh.

But about the changes – they were not broadcasted. And that is ok. Maybe its for the best. Chizik was pretty clear on the topic. He said he would review… but then suddenly Roof is gone. Considering how the defense did… no big deal. From all appearances he was taken care of… and nobody was going to make much of a fuss. But when Malzahn leaves… and the way it happens… it raises an eyebrow or two. I might also add that there are other folks who have been connected to Malzahn who might leave as well.. and I am watching patiently to see if those who said it are correct: specifically Luper and Taylor.

If they go… so goes our recruiting. Or are you going to tell me Chizik is going to hold that together too?

Yeah… I guess I do look at this as a pretty serious situation. For the life of me… I can’t imagine why anyone else would look at it any differently.

Like it or not… Malzahn for all intensive purposes appeared to be the glue that held the rest of the staff together. With him gone… will the rest hold? This is one hell of a test for Chizik.

And for the record for those saying that Malzahn is “going home”… you mean that in a general sense. He is from Fort Smith near the Ok boarder… Jonesborro is near Tennessee. It ain’t home.

I think he would do fine. I thought he got a raw deal when Tubbs let him go and hired Franklin. He took a terrible offense in 2003 (although it had a lot of talent), turned it around in a hurry and lead a great offense in 2004. We lost a lot of good players and struggled a bit in 2005 (sound familiar), but still lead the SEC in total offense. 2006 was a strange year. The offense took a step back, but the team was still very good overall. If we hadn’t lost focus and forgot how to tackle in the UGa game, we probably play for the NC that season instead of UF. In 2007 we had 4 freshman starters on the offensive line and really struggled, but as the season went on, the offense really seemed to improve. Unfortunately I think the natives were getting restless and Tubbs decided he needed to make a change, so he hired Tony Franklin. We all know how that turned out.

It came out after the fact that Tubbs wouldn’t let Franklin have complete control of the offense. There were issues with Franklin and the rest of the assistant coaches as well. I’m willing to bet Borges was hindered by a lot of the same issues when he was let go.

Joel Erickson is doing a great job there, by the way….

"I’m very happy for Gus and the opportunity that awaits him at Arkansas State. Gus has always had the strong desire to become a head coach and the chance for him to return to his home state that he is so familiar with, will be very beneficial. He’s meant a tremendous amount to our program the past three years, helping our offense and our program achieve unprecedented heights, winning a BCS National Championship and setting countless offensive records. Gus has experienced success in each stop of his coaching career and I have no doubt that he will have similar results at Arkansas State. We look forward to having Gus stay with us through the bowl game and hope to send him out with a victory."

Wait a second.... EXPLAIN THIS TOO ME.

You can use small words. I won’t mind. How exactly am I to believe “if I take the emotion out of it” that it “makes sense”????

I mean let’s review what we know:

He interviewed or was at least in the top tier of candidates for UNC. He didn’t get the job.

He interviewed or was at least in the top tier of candidates for Kansas, and he didn’t get the job. I might add that Kansas was so hard up…that they went with a proven FAILURE as a college head coach with Charlie Weis. The guy had EVERY resource and GOD at Notre Dame (the premiere program in all of college football) and he was a loser. And he was FIRED. We are somehow led to believe NOW he will get it done as a Jayhawk???? Nah! That ain’t going to happen. The question I have is… Malzahn was much more qualified that Weis. Malzahn has been apart of a NC team. And he was an unknown entity in the big 12. Why didn’t he get the job?

Further, we know he settled on Ark State. He basically said as much. In another article it was said “said he would like to be a head coach if the right situation arose”. And ARK State is it? Seriously? For the record there are a ton more jobs out there that are better than ARK State. But i am to believe he took this position because it is supposedly a stepping stone to a better job? Right….

His wife was all set to go to Raleigh. And now she is going back to the outback of Arkansas??? LOL. Just saying it I start laughing… she is in the big money now… why would she want to go back there. Is it her home town or something? I doubt it.

One more time: he turned down big money at VANDY and University of Maryland last year for ARK STATE this year??

BS!!!!

And oh by the way he took a pay cut to boot???

BS AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!

That said, let’s take a step back and look at this from another angle:

What is wrong with Gene Chizik that suddenly he loses both coordinators with a week of each other?? They took lesser jobs to UCF (lateral) and HC to Ark state… for obviously LESS PAY. Who does that in this day in time unless they don’t like working in the environment created by Mean Gene?

I think there is something to this. The good news is that our recruits are sticking (so far). If that falters… well, I’d say its the end of Gene. I have said it before… I will say it again… I like Gene. But something is wrong. He either makes another excellent hire and rights his ship… or next season he will be looking for a job. You can drink all the kool aide you want… it won’t change the outcome unless this happens.

Compare and contrast this separation

With the last Coordinator who left.

Chizik will do just fine – this is how professionals handle changes in their staffs. Care to guess how many prospective OCs and DCs will be sending their resumes considering how both Roof and Malzahn were treated as they left? I’d much rather it went the way it did rather than having the above in the news.

Let's hope you are correct.

When Tubs started ignoring his own management hand book… I knew the handwriting was on the wall. Hell, a blind man could see that.

I can agree that the seperation looks good for Auburn in terms of contrasting it to how Tubs did Franklin to how Chizik has done both Roof and Malzahn.

Question is who will we be able to get?

That is ALWAYS the question.

Come on man. It really isn’t this bad. Chiz put together a great staff before and he will do it again. I think Roof was gone regardless. I don’t think Chiz just lost him. And we all knew that Gus would leave sooner or later. I think it speaks volumes that he is staying on to coach in the bowl game. If there was bad blood between Gus and Chiz, what incentive would he have to stick around?

I hope so... JJ

I am tired of a perpetual cloud being over my program.

I want stability. And AU can experience that too. Everytime we are on the cusp of moving forward… this crap happens. It doesn’t speak well.

And about incentive… that was my point. He had $1.3 Million of them. But I think the wife thing is a better explanation of why he is leaving… but either way they aren’t “buddies” if Chizik is saying you gotta go or he left on his own.. Regardless… if it is as you are claiming… he was paid handsomely. So why leave? You gonna sit there and tell me that money isn’ t that important? LOL. Please don’t think I’m bagging on you because you are stating your opinions. I just happen to disagree with them and, as you can tell, I like to joke bit. And if you are nice, I may just pass you that…

All I’m saying is this: if Gus was forced out, he wouldn’t be coaching the bowl game: and if Gus is leaving because he was angry with Chiz, he wouldn’t be coaching the bowl game. The fact that he is sticking around to finish out the season leads me to believe that they are parting on good terms. I don’t understand why you have this gloom and doom attitude toward Chiz and the program in general because Gus is taking a head coaching job.

We’ll get new coordinators. They may not be the “sexy” names like Gus was, but I trust Chiz to make the right call with his hires. He did a fantastic job the first go round. I think he can do it again.

Yikes.

And I have nothing against agressive women… no offense to present company in any way shape or form… but this is above and beyond and I think if it was what caused the issue and for him to leave…. well, I think it was probably justified.

by wde1988 on Dec 14, 2011 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

I would also like to see the unedited version. It would have been great if they released it to put some of that into context….my concern is the unedited version doesn’t really help with the overall perception. Regardless, she was talking very candidly about a job her husband still had and about a culture that she was still living in. She has enough (or so I thought) common sense to realize that there are certain things that you can say to your girlfriends over coffee that shouldn’t be said in a public forum. That’s where she stepped over the line. Let’s face it her point about people getting worked up over 18-22 year old performances on a Saturday was pretty dead on (IMO).

I didn’t read too much into her comments on Cam…mainly because of context….

I don’t know if I would characterize her as aggressive, just opinionated……but that’s just me.

Ah.... there it is. (collective sigh)

All is well.

LOL.

For the record TM… I am not “freaked out” over losing both coordinators. I have stated many times I can take them or leave them. It’s what replaces them that I am concerned about.

And FYI… Malzahn was a bit unexpected. To me anyway!! For all intensive purposes I had thought the coaching carousel had passed him by. Didn’t you? To me it was not that he took a job… it’s where and how much he is being paid that raised my eyebrows. Any time you leave and take a pay cut that can’t look good. But maybe I am from a different school of thought…. (obviously).

AU has been so secretive about this… and their party line has been they are proud of Gus and that this was a promotion yada yada yada. How many promotions do you get where you take a $600K pay cut? Add to it the stuff that is unsaid… about the wife. Well, let’s just say you can put lipstick on it but it is still a pig.

I find it absolutely amazing thought that folks are calling the concern expressed as “hand wringing”, “hyperventalating”, “freaking out”, “need to buck up” or my personal favorite…. “need to nut up”…. and yet the football program is physically threatened with the threads of the staff unraveling in front of our very eyes….

Sorry – but I take what happens to Auburn VERY seriously.

and yet the football program is physically threatened with the threads of the staff unraveling in front of our very eyes….

‘Unraveling’ invokes an image of uncontrollable chaos—or at least the demise of a favorite sweater. Regardless, it is not ideal.

Ok-I have a little secret. My stomach went a little wobbly last night when I heard the news. I knew it was coming. Every head coach opening, I knew Malzahn would be up for. But the reason for my stomach getting wobbly is that I felt very emotional for Malzahn-who is now having his dream come true. (just when you thought I couldn’t get any more Pollyanna up in here.) UNC was a lock, until it wasn’t. Kansas was a lock until Gus started to look a little to similar to Turner Gill…and then Kristi took a big dump all over her husband’s immediate stock and image. (yeah I just said that). Gus has a lot to prove. I for one, hope that he goes out there and makes everyone forget how stupid his wife is and start focusing on what a rockstar wizard of a coach he is.

Auburn? DUDE! We have talent. We still have a great head coach (last time I checked), who somehow fumbled his way into two great hires on his first go around. I imagine, he will make some great decisions again. Just a guess, with my orange and blue glasses……

Incidentally and related, Turner Gill is available for an OC position….just sayin’.

75 and 104

Thats what we were ranked at the end of the season in defense and offense.
And we finished with a winning record. I know change is hard to swallow, but sometime change is for the best. It may hurt us in recruiting this year but I’m not counting on next years freshmen to do the job for us. We need the guys who have been here for 2+ years to step up. Thats whats important.

I’m confident we will get an upgrade at DC, and hopefully one at OC, but after finishing 104 in offense that shouldn’t be difficult. I will say that if we get another gimmick offense guy who will never put the QB under center unless its in the victory formation, I’m going to be angst ridden myself. But I’ll reserve judgement until I see who that is.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

by Col.Angus on Dec 14, 2011 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

Again... I find that I am in agreement with you...

All I am saying is that Auburn is at a critical juncture. We need success here. Failure is not an option.

Further, we do have talent. We have had some great classes. I think this one might be even better. I am just worried that if we don’t close the deals… our talent and any future talent might wander off.

About his past success… there is always two ways to look at that… factually speaking, it’s just one data point. This will make two. We are obviously going to learn more about the man… GENE CHIZIK.

I am hearing more and more rhetoric that Mark Stoops is the guy for the DC position. I think this is an excellent start if it were true.

There is no list as of yet on OCs that I have seen. As soon as I see one – I will pass it along. But Turner Gill?? Wouldn’t that be awkward for Charles Barkley??

FYI – I heard that Oscar Meyer hired the guy from UNC… but he isn’t going to be the DC @ OSU. WTH? Stupid move on his part… but whatever. And the other guy that was at TEXAS A&M… he got hired too. Retytor… or whatever his funny little name was. Congrats.

Anyway… I am waiting patiently. But I do get MORE nervous as the days pass. I would also point out again… that we don’t know about Luper or Taylor. Shout if you hear something…

Turner Gill grooms quarterbacks. We need a groomer of quarterback. He also needs to rejuvenate his career from the barrel. He made a big leap going to Kansas, so he needs to regroup.

Everyday must be awkward for Charles Barkley- a hire one way or the other isn’t going to change that.

Sorry don't mean to be trolling

Just an Arky boy here seeing what you AU guys were saying about the Gus hire. Sure looks fishy from this side of the SEC. Have any of you ever been to Jonesboro Arkansas? Ugliest place you’ve ever seen. An ugly town in the middle of row after row of farm land. Mosquitoes as big as sparrows. And a very small paranoid fan base. Its from all those years of living in the U of A’s shadow. Still I pull for them cause they’re an Arkansas team. I am thrilled to see Gus coming on board but there has got to be more to this story than meets the eye. I have never seen ANYONE take this kind of step down just to be an HC. I understand he’s not all about the money but still…..

I completely agree with you...

something’s amiss in the Loveliest Village on the Plains.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

I'm not so sure that it's something amiss in AU....

as much as it is in the Malzahn family.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.

Appreciate the honest take on it

And don’t take this response as a troll either. Seriously.

But do you think that maybe other SEC teams’ fans might have a predisposition to being suspicious, following the whole Cam Newton mess?

(or Ramsay, etc.)

Or am I misunderstanding, and you’re just referring to the internal politics of this?

"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."

by AU Tiger on Dec 14, 2011 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure

My reference was to the Malzahn family which could be caused by pressure from Chizik and on up the line. I would rather just believe that Gus wanted to come home and get a HC job and move up the ranks. But with the money and timing it seems like a conspiracy of some kind. Not to mention that A-State is about a 6 hours drive from his home and Freeze is the first coach to use A-State as a stepping stone in like forever.
Then there was this quote from Ryan Applin QB at ASU:
Aplin said. “People are going to say what they’re going to say. Everybody’s got their own opinions. They’re not in his shoes. They don’t know exactly what’s going on. This is where he wants to be, and we’re glad to have him.”
Maybe I just like a good conspiracy and am making something out of nothing.

From al.com

These excerpts are from Malzahn’s press conference, and the story…

Arkansas State applied the pressure, even enlisting Arkansas governor Mike Beebe to call Malzahn on Tuesday. The ploy work. Malzahn, who made his coaching name as a high school coach in Arkansas , was back.

“I told the team ‘buckle up and we’re fixing to take this thing to the next level,’” Malzahn said.

“We’ll be bringing a staff not only of great coaches, but great recruiters.

“I’m going to take my time to get the right fit for Arkansas State.

Hmmmm. I wonder who the "great recruiters are???"

Could it be Luper and Taylor?

The news I am hearing on the Mark Stoops front is that he ain’t coming. In fact, they are saying he hasn’t been contacted.

Sounds like he is playing us against FSU.

I don’t know if I want a guy that is THAT damn greedy. I guess it depends on if he can make our Defense back into what it used to be?

Come on Chizik. We need some good news damnit!

Of course that's what he is saying to the media..

Look, he was on a recruiting trip when the media caught up with him to ask those questions. What are going to say?
He hasn’t officially accepted the job yet, so he still is recruiting for FSU. Professionally, he can’t start telling recruits he may be going to Auburn, because then he can’t be trusted by anyone ever again.
Like Acid said, the guy has been a career coordinator, he is doing what he loves, and is very good at it. ALL aspects of it.

Oh, and by the way, I did not chastise you the other day, you feel free to comment and say anything you like, and if I disagree, I’ll say something. If I do agree, I’ll rec’d it like I have before. We are cool, or is it Kool? Anyway, I apologize if I came off like I was chastising you. I would not do that intentionally.

You would probably have a better insight anyway. All I can do is read what is written… and react.

Here's a thought before I go to bed....

I really don’t want to accept that Auburn made Gus leave, and I don’t want to think that it was Gus’ decision to leave Auburn for lowly Arkansas State.

I’m sure his wife took a lot of heat for her stupid rant on the talk show, and from what I could get between the edits on the video, I got the idea that Auburn wasn’t her favorite place in the world. Maybe she put her foot down the last few weeks and declared that she would be a head coaches wife this year. Maybe she decided that this was her last chance this year to get a new position. Maybe Gus was caught between a rock and a hard place.

I could be happy blaming her….

I need a cold shower and a copy of the Auburn Creed

LOL - that is funny.

When I was a kid there was this cartoon I used to watch. At the end of every show it had a cave man dropping a dinosaur outside of the main door of the rock house. That image kind of applies here… except I would want to drop kick this lady far away from my house. Because I got a sneaky suspicion that she would be more vicious if she somehow got the upper hand.

I guess the moral of the story is either:

1) be careful who you marry. Choose well traveller.

or

2) don’t let your kids watch cartoons!
