New Auburn Coordinators? Rumors and Gossip Continue
It's been 10 days since the announcement that Auburn Defensive Coordinator, Ted Roof would be leaving Auburn to join his mentor George O'Leary at Central Florida. In the interim, Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn has taken the head coaching job at Arkansas State and the search for two new Auburn Coordinators has given much fodder to message board rumors and gossip.
A fairly recent name to garner some serious attention for the DC job has been LSU Secondary Coach Ron Cooper. A former head coach at Louisville, Eastern Michigan, and Alabama A&M, Cooper served as Defensive Coordinator at Mississippi State in 2003 and as Asst Head Coach at South Carolina from 2004-2008.
Added to the mix this week, is a name that has been discussed in recent days by some of our members here at Track Em Tigers. On Thursday KoolBell mentioned the possibility of Illinois DC and interim Head Coach Vic Koenning. That idea might not be so far fetched. Koenning was passed over for the head coaching position after Ron Zook was fired at the end of a 6-6 season.
The Illini offense was atrocious the last half of the season with a 11 point per game scoring average. Yet Koenning's defense finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in pass defense. (And it's no secret that pass defense has been Auburn's biggest weakness the past couple of years.) In addition, the Illini were ranked 21st nationally in scoring defense and fished the regular season as the seventh best overall defense in the country.
While he was at Clemson between 2005-2007 his official Clemson bio began with the following quote:
"In just three short years, Vic Koenning has accomplished something no other Clemson defensive coordinator has accomplished in Tiger football history. Each of his first three defenses has finished in the top 25 in scoring, rushing, total, and pass efficiency defense each season. A top-25 final ranking in all four categories in the same year had been accomplished just twice prior to his arrival."
The most intriguing thing about Koenning though may be the statement he made when he thanked the fans for their support after declining an offer to remain on the staff of new Illinois Head Coach Tim Beckman. Koenning said he was grateful for the offer but he, "had other opportunities." Makes you wonder if one of those opportunities might be the DC job at Auburn?
While Koenning would be a great hire, most speculators have had Florida State's Mark Stoops as the front runner. However, the Tallahasse Democrat reported today that Stoops is not planning on leaving the Seminoles.
The picture is even less clear with the Offensive Coordinator position. Many felt like Malzahn protégé and Clemson Offensive Coordinator Chad Morris would be called on when Malzahn left. However, Morris has since been locked down by Clemson with a new $1.3 million dollar per year contract for six years.
Now the latest offensive coordinator rumor making the rounds is that Coach Chizik may consider hiring an NFL coach. I find that one hard to believe.
Most coaching carousel watchers feel like the new guy may be Southern Mississippi's OC, Blake Anderson. Last year published reports said he was the man Chizik was ready to hire had Gus left to take the Maryland or Vanderbilt jobs. Based on that thinking the smart money would have to be on Anderson.
However, he's now a candidate to be the new head coach at So. Miss. If he gets that job, look for Chizik to go after a coordinator with a philosophy that matches up close with the personnel that has been recruited the last three years - and not one that would be more in line with a pro style attack.
As of late Friday, some insiders believed Chizik was close to hiring a DC. An announcement was expected to come as early as the first of the week. That announcement could still come even with Stoops removing his name from consideration. And it could be Cooper or Koenning. On the other hand it could be a name that has not made the rounds through the rumor mill.
The OC hire though, may take a little longer. But hey there is one thing for certain about all the rumors ... Gene Chizik is the only one who really knows when and who the next Coordinators will be on the Plains.
So stay tuned.

I have seen nothing new...
I suspect AU is busy closing out recruiting visits and will get hot and heavy about getting the coordinator positions solved sometime this week. We are about to go into a dark period where they are limited in what they are doing. Rivals right now has us at #6 with a total of 16 folks and their intent. That is if folks stay.
I am a bit disappointed about Stoops. However, I don’t want ANYONE at AU that doesn’t want to be there. If you are looking for a paycheck… don’t waste our time. We want another Championship!
WDE
I don't care how we get somebody like Stoo
They’re not wasting our time when they want to get paid. Stoops would have been great. Ron Cooper will be great if we get him, though nobody on here seems to remember how I’ve been yelling his name for a couple of months now. Cooper would be the best hire after Stoops.
Well, Blake Anderson…what an awful hire! Koenning? We can’t really be serious about Koenning can we? That would be a worse hire than Anderson!!! NO! Big names Please I’m begging you Chizik and Jay Jacobs! Prove to recruits you’re not afraid to bring the biggest and best names out here. If you want to compete for the very best players, then you go out and get the VERY BEST COACHES! Koenning and Anderson are NOT the best coaches available. Big names not this kind of thing. I’m so frustrated right now I don’t know what to do! This is terrible news. We can get a great set of coordinators, we don’t need these small name guys! Make two big time splashes guys I’m begging you!!! Ron Cooper would be a big time splash! There are others out there for DC that could be a big splash, NOT KOENNING!!!! He doesn’t agree with Chizik philosophically either. We saw this once with Roof and for three years it didn’t work!!! There is NO REASON to try this again!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Big names Please I’m begging you Chizik and Jay Jacobs!
First of all, on what planet is Vic Koenning not a big name? He’s been up for some very high profile jobs and has some reat accomplishments in his own right (he’d probably LSU’s DC right now if Chavis wasn’t available.)
And second, why are you so worried about winning the press conference? The press conference hire in 2009 was Turner GiIl. How do you think THAT hire would have worked out for Auburn? Meanwhile the guy that nobody wanted won Auburn’s second NC in its history. Winning a press conference is fine, but shouldn’t be the goal. Auburn needs to win football games.
Alabama fans, ask yourself this question: Is this who you want representing your University and your fanbase?

Big names...
Why can’t we have the big name and get the guy who fits best? I hope you’re right about Vic Koenning. I’m just not impressed as much with him. Turner Gill was not really a big name, just a fan favorite. Bud Foster, Joe Whitt Jr., guys like that are who I want to see. Vic Koenning is the worst guy we could get I will admit that and I was talking out of my frustration right then. He’s not bad, I just think AU can get better. I don’t think he’s in the same ling as John Chavis if it makes any more sense.

Looks like Koenning is going to...
North Carolina anyway. I’m becoming more livid as I watch. I was too hasty on Koenning. Honestly, I didn’t think much of him since I watch so much college football and I’ve never heard of him. Now that I’ve looked up his credentials I was dead wrong about him. Unfortunately, he’s going to North Carolina so now I’m just more pissed!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I also want to apologize to one Vic Koenning...
You’re a great guy and an even better defensive coordinator.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Stoops staying at FSU is only disappointing because it continues the uncertainty.
I would LOVE Koenning to come to the Plains. LOVE IT!! I doubt we get Gorgeous Borges back….don’t know if we would want to…although, he was my favorite OC of that era. I always thought he was Tub’s scapegoat. (I never liked Petrino-his success, I appreciated; his demeanor and character left a lot to be desired).

TJ Yeldon...
just flipped his commitment to the University of Alabama and the dead period of recruiting starts right now. Screw your rainbows, the sky is very dark now and it is storming. Congratulations Alabama, you assholes can cheat and get away with it and Auburn is too much of a pansy to do anything about it.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
How do you contact the NCAA?
Shane from Center Point did it all the time – please let us know.

I don't know...
You could start by sending an email to the NCAA people. They have their email addresses listed and the phone numbers are listed to the NCAA. You could look all of that up and call them.
